I'm not sure what it is. I use a pretty light grey because I want to avoid being too dark, but even in sunlight it's still noticeably grey. I think it is partially thin layering, for some reason so many people do a thin layer and think "thats great!!" ugh

Since it seems to be the new bandwagon that the Homestucks are jumping off on to, this seems like the best place to ask: How did Dangan Ronpa start getting so popular? It's an obscure JAP only visual novel, I'm surprised anyone has even heard of it!

I don't disagree on the other things. I hate helmet horns, but we needed to slam my wig and all of my armor onto my body within a minute during our skit, so I decided to do it anyway. I may attach them to a wig now that I no longer have to do quick-changes. I picked the fluffy wig texture largely to conceal the horn attachments.

As for the boots, I'm 5'4" and decided to cosplay Darkleer.

I know Dave's lightened up recently in the comic but for the most part he's just been stoic and cool, so I would expect that most Dave cosplayers would reflect that. Like being the sane man in the middle of John's wacky pranks and antics, Jade's bubbly nature and Rose's snark and sharp wit.

on the subject of fabric/material choices, what are people's opinions on eridan capes lined with fabrics that are not the same as the outer layer?

photo related, the main cape fabric and the stuff i got for the lining match in color pretty well-- the lining looks shiny and fuzzy/furry in the photo but it's really not-- if anything the black in the lining pattern that has a bit of a sheen, not the purple.

i've already sewn the lining in so i guess it's a bit too late to be asking opinions but i guess late is better than never-- i can always fix or remake the cape later after all.

ahh i wish i could have gotten a slightly redder purple myself, but trying to match all my purples is hell an a half in itself. i'll probably be running a few dying tests on my leftover wefts after the con to see if i can get the color more accurate, and if that's a go i'll see if i can dye the cape fabrics a little redder as well.
as it is my streak are just slightly bluer/darker than the cape, especially after i styled the wig and it's bothering me enough to want to fix it once i'm not rushing for the con.

Don't use the fabric softener, it'll make it look covered in dust and sticky. Try a bit of Suave detangling spray, smells good and looks less gross.

A question for HSG before I head off to sleep:

Is there one character or set of characters, from Homestuck, that you tend to be or cosplay often? What are your favourite Homestuck cosplays that you have done, what Homestuck cosplays do you plan on doing, and what Homestuck cosplays do you enjoy seeing?

As for me, I've been Dave for a while, starting to work more on my John cosplays, currently getting both of their God Tier outfits ready for a con soon. I've taken a liking to Dave, because as overdone as his regular outfit is, it can still stand out and have some nice touch-ups like the iShades and a good sword, which is what I plan to do at some point (either with the Ribbitar or Caledscratch, along with iShades).

I also plan on being Jake and Dirk for the summer, while also working towards improving Dave. Once I figure out how to use Ben Nye, I'll probably get around to doing troll cosplays.

I enjoy seeing God Tier outfits, because they're so distinct, as opposed to regular outfits, which can be worn casually (minus any wigs or glasses or anything), but the God Tier outfits you can see are clearly from some series or in this case, comic. They're colourful and they're distinct.

Shame about the purples not matching, especially since the richness of the cloak is going to make the hair stripe look even bluer in comparison. i have purple lenses actually, but i think i prefer the look of the yellow lenses over purple-- darker lenses tend to enlarge my eyes too much and make me look too 'cute' in general. (plus i think eridan wasn't old enough to have his eye color match his blood color when he died IIRC?) plus i don't think my lenses are gonna match my other purples either (they match my kurloz stuff better tbh) but that's probably just me being picky.

once i finish up the cloak i'll probably do another makeup test with the purples in though.

My friends are tall, so I did want tall boots, especially onstage. :T All of the platforms I found were really expensive, made of shitty vinyl, a Hot Topic nightmare, or some combination thereof, and none of them looked any less stripperiffic. The ones I ended up with were leather and $25 on eBay. I'm going to either keep looking for some kind of high-heeled men's riding boots, or accept that a short Darkleer is funny.

Personally I am a Kanaya cosplayer who does a lot of personal outfits, especially when cosplaying for meetups etc. I have an interest in fashion and thus enjoy applying it to my cosplay. So that is something I love seeing but rarely get, well thought through alternate outfits.
Obviously that isn't really relevant for characters such as John, Karkat or Sollux, but I would love to see people get a bit more creative WHILE staying true to the character. Especially when it comes to genderbends which are often just excuses for either not binding or for oversexualisation, which is a shame.
I would also love to see an Eridan in actual wizarding robes.

Related: how important is it to follow the canonical proportions of the crosshairs? That long extended back portion always make it look really weird when you're posing because you have to hold your arms unnaturally. How badly would HSG bust a tit if somebody did a nice job but tweaked the proportions?

Hey guys, I'm making my first pair of armsocks as we speak, I finished the first arm, but the tights were so large on my arms that I had to sew a seam from the shoulder down to the hands, and it stands out quite a bit when putting it on, since the seam is darker than the rest of the armsock. Any tip on how to make them less 'visible' or how to make them stand out less? I'm guessing ironing it won't work too well..

I was hesitant to use foam because I don't want it to get dinged or damaged... but because of that I had to use cardboard, so I unfortunately had to take some liberties on the sizes so it was be structurally integritable.
How did the foam work out for you? did it ding a lot?

What I did what coat the edges in a thin layer on bondo fiberglass filler and then I sanded it down, you dont want to use too much or it will make raised bumps on the edges, If yiu really want to however you can cover the entire thing in bondo and sand for a extremely strong body

What is the difference between Ben Nye Cream Liner and Cream Foundation?

I couldn't find any Cream Liner in Cadaver Grey, they didn't have that in stock, the only Cadaver Grey they had was Cream Foundation.

Will that do as well? I also bought the sealing powder and spray, but I'm just concerned about if I got the wrong thing or not.

Trying to fix my pants for Eridan, but I can't decide if I should use wide-legged pants (the type I keep coming back to is called 'palazzo pants') or tight tights-like pants with high waist.

The simple solution (albeit expensive):
Get a pair of white/blue pants at shock or something, guys cut, dye them if not right colour and then tape the stripes and use spray-on fabric paint for ultimate cleannes.

Last time I tried to make a pair of striped, I winded up with pants that had pre-sewn 'hidden' stripes that looked like they had been in a train accident, everything overlapped and the stitches I tried to get rid off didn't want to work after a while..

Well, I didn't even make it to the fabric-paint part because I used the method where you buy pants with stitched lines on them and then remove like 1 - 2 at a time to create bigger stripes, and then paint them.
I'm too much of a mental trainwreck though, so when I encountered a place where the pre-stiched lines went into the bigger seams I broke down, since the perfection of the striped pants were long gone to me after the discovery.

Enough about that now, just gotta face that I'm not the smartest person and have difficulties with fixing stuff when encountering minor set-backs.

Put on the creme foundation, then take a puff (the kind that comes with most powder thingies) coated with the sealing powder, and THROW it on your face. I dried to sort of dab it on, and winded up rubbing off some of the creme foundation, so you don't wanna do that, brush off the excess powder, and then you spray the sealer, remember to keep it a bit from the face to avoid it from becoming too.. runny? Can you call it that? Oh well. Spray a few times from a 30 cm distance rather than spraying too close.

I'm not quite sure what dabbing might do, I suggest that you try that beforehand like on the arm or something before the con, so you don't apply everything perfectly, and then mess up the make-up when applying the sealant powder.

That depends on what you feel helps you best. If you extend it out quite a bit (whole arm), it might just land light, thin, layers and you'll need to spray several times, too close (arm bent or more) and it might become blotchy. I suggest you try and see what you think is best for this beforehand as well.

Start with the face.

No worries, it's better to ask several questions than to drag yourself down with questions that you can't answer unless you ask them.

Like, for the ball at the end, is a styrofoam ball the best way to go about it? I personally dont like the look of duct tape too much, so what can I put over the ball to prevent that nasty painted styrofoam look?

first of all, you never want to spray paint a Styrofoam ball, petroleum melts foam. but acrylic paints can work, just make sure the ball isn't too porous cuz then youll get cracks in the paint. if you have a rough foam ball, just put a light cover of model magic on it, sand and paint.
Personally for a finish i would recommend using Modge Podge, as its very strong and comes in glossy finish and non glossy finish.
(P.S. that zillyhoo hammer that i posted earlier isn't mine, i just drew the dimensions i used for mine on a picture i found, i would not ever recommend using duct tape, acrylic or oil paints only)

I plan to cosplay as Jake English and Dirk Strider this summer, probably their regular outfits for meetups and then God Tier outfits for cons (if I get them done in time of course).

Only thing is, I wouldn't be entirely comfortable wearing Jake's God Tier outfit, namely the ridiculously short shorts, well, it basically looks like a speedo or something.

If you add latex to the acrylics paint, it's less likely to crack when it's on a porous surface. (A friend whom used to be into the LARP community around here told me about how they re-painted foam swords with an acrylic/latex mix to keep it from cracking) Just keep the mixture 50/50 or 70/30!
