Otome doesn't have rules like lolita do. It translates to 'Young Maiden', so the point with Otome is to look Maiden like. It sometimes uses a lot of clashing colors and prints. Also it's possible to use lolita clothes in an otome coord, but then you ususally skip a petticoat.

None of these are otome.

More than half of these are lolita though. Like, they all follow the lolita guidelines of aesthetics i.e. pettis, skirts not past the knee.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that the point of otome is to look less formal and more casual. Hence the no-petticoat trend. Also, You usually see shorter skirts paired with cute, thick/elaborate tights. At least that's how I think of otome.

Otome has no official rules, and yes it can intersect with lolita (including pettis and longer skirts). Shut up and post more otome.

Whenever I have to explain otome to people, I usually describe it as "a modest, girly and twee look".
I find people tend to get that.

I know that this is a dumb question, so no need to tell me how stupid I am, but I'm really curious.
All of this looks like a sort of toned down lolita to me, like the stuff you'd see on daily lolita. What's the difference between lolita and otome? Clearly they're somewhat similar, but what are the little differences that makes one outfit lolita and one outfit otome?

Toned down lolita can be classed as otome, but otome is not always toned down lolita.

The main problem is that otome has such a wide range that it can be. It's more an overall feeling of an outfit than standard rules like lolita has. You can wear skirts of any length (although very short skirts are not usually seen) or even shorts and trousers. If lolita fashion is trying to look like a doll, then otome is trying to look like a young lady. It's very feminine and still quite a modest fashion. The colours and prints are often very jaunty, but not always. You may also see a lot of clashing colours and prints, but again, not always.

I think its a matter of personal taste/the dress looking ok without a petti. Some dresses just look weird without one. Definitely seems low on the poof for the most part though.

What? Otome has a vintage look to it sometimes, though. It's definitely not textile-y enough to be dollykei. It's mixed prints, which is more a hallmark of otome. The shape is closer to otome than dolly, too.

The hair and makeup is like that because.. she's a grimoire shopgirl.. but the outfit is not.
