I know absolutely nothing about fabric.

I want to make this costume but I don't know if it will be possible to find a fabric that can be seamlessly stretched over the hat (vacuum formed base shape) and also look like good officer-grade uniform fabric.

Is my assumption that if I try to use different fabrics for hat and unifrom they'll never match up a bit extremist? I know nothing so I assume the worst at this point.

>> No.6831586

>>6831569
you don't use different materials. hats are made using a steaming process; the fabric is steamed and saturated until it becomes moldable (usually it's wool or felt) and then pressed and shaped over top of a form. however, i doubt you have an industrial steamer and hat mold, so you may have to settle for doing the crown (top) and sideband as two seperate pieces sewn together. traditional uniforms i think are usually made of a cotton wool woven blend. her coat looks like it would definitely be wool. if you have an army surplus near you, i recommend poking around to get an idea of what fabrics to look for. look for the heavier coats and jackets that would be worn.

I'm glad a thread for this was up, as I'm pretty much lost to most things of this sort right now.

Picture related, I'm doing a human/gijinka version of Big the Cat from Sonic (since I can't afford all that fur and stuff for a suit at the moment) and I've been trying to figure out how do I make the ears so they can stay up and not drag the wig down with the ears. Since his ears are enormous, I figured they'd weigh down pretty hard.

Also, any tips on how to do a stripe in a wig, fauxhawkesq?

How do you make really bulky armor pieces con-friendly? I'm worried about being crammed in the elevator in it, so I'm thinking of making it so I can take it apart and assemble it on the floor, but I'm not sure about how easy that would be to transport.

My first thought was to use the stairs during the busy con hours, but the hotel has eighteen floors or so. Still might do it.

Not sure if appropriate but I don't want to start a brand new thread for it.

Is there any difference, other than the cost, between jewelry cutters and regular pliers from hardware shops? in my area, the former costs $8-$20 while the latter is always below $3. I don't want to pay a mark up for the same item just because it's labelled as a "jewelry tool," if it's the same thing.

So this is my first plushie, and I think I did an okay job. The only obvious problem is the stitching (and the glue gun residue, but let's ignore that.) How do I hide the stitching better? Most plushies show little to no stitching, and there mine are, clear as day. I used a blanket stitch. The tentacles are a little better because they were smaller and closer together. There's your problem, anon.
A blanket stitch is usually used as a hemming stitch with fleece (pic related) and related fabrics or for details/appliques. Were you following a tutorial that told you to use this stitch?

You're new at this, aren't cha?
You should be sewing it inside-out, and THEN flipping the pieces, filling and connecting them all. Sorry if my English is a wee bit off, basically what I tried to say was that the "wrong" side of the fabric should be facing outwards when you stitch them together so you can flip it inside out and it looks seamless.

>> No.6832510

continuation of >>6832481

I'm by no means an expert, but if you're going to handsew plushies or really anything that involves two pieces of fabric being joined together, you want the wrong sides of both pieces facing out and the right sides facing in. Then you stitch along where the seam is supposed to be with a small, even backstitch that goes through both layers, making sure to keep your stitches as straight and even as possible. After you finish that seam, flip the fabric so the right side is facing out again and while the seam will be visible, the stitches themselves won't be seen if you do it right.

I presume you're going to take an orange wig and wind it around your head?
Weight is your biggest enemy. You might be better off doing a turban of some sort, or the like.

Anyway, if you want to use an actual wig for that, you'd probably be better getting two wigs and disassembling one of them. Get some chicken wire, I'd say, and tons and tons of stable gel (I recommend something by Got2BGlued). Gel the hair to the wire base, spiraling it up like that. If I'm figuring physics right, the gel should hold it in that place.
You'll most likely have to use a hairdryer on it as you go, since that'll take forever to dry as it is.

If you also want to get the black lines, you can try adding small bits of black weft, after the rest of the wig is dry.

Best of luck, Anon.

Not really a cosplay question, but a quick question maybe you guys could answer for me, specifically lolitas, if you're in the thread:

I've somehow got a white Body Line blouse in my possession. I recall the name, but I don't remember if the brand is frowned upon or not. Is it worth trying to sell on /cgl/? Or is it similar to that of Milanoo and I'd have to pass it off to someone who doesn't know any better.

tldr; shopping for two pairs of lefty spring action scissors for fabric and upholstery foam.

I have a normal true-left gingher but cutting has been getting painful for me lately (just regular "you aren't young anymore" pains). And for foam I use "normal" scissors and get blisters all the time.
Spring action scissors sound wonderful, but unfortunately gingher only carries a right-handed version. I also checked amazon/etc. and the only ones that come up are "ambidextrous" ones with a right-handed blade orientation or for children (which obviously aren't fit for either thing I need to cut). Am I going to be made fun of if I mix hand-made pieces with store bought? Some of it is salvagable and I definitely need to make the jacket, but I should just buy the cardigan and shirt, they look like shit.

So I bought one of these for a Halloween costume. I want to use the head down to about the shoulders for a black mage cosplay, however walking around all day zipped up in that thing sounds like torture, and it's difficult to zip/unzip it by myself. What's the best way to modify it so that I can maybe just take it on and off, while still remaining stretched fairly tightly over my face?

Newbie to /cgl/ here.

I have never been to a convention before and I really want to go. The main reason is I don't know who I could go as and I'd really feel like an idiot if I didn't go in a costume.

I have a little bit of experience in costume making, so I'm sure I could make something adequate before the next convention. I have the money and the time. But also I don't want to waste my time on trying to become a character I look nothing like and look like an idiot when I go.

I'm not fussy, but all my friends tell me I look like Dawson from Dawsons Creek and I don't think cosplaying as him is really what I am looking for.

TL;DR Pic related it's me. Tell me who I could cosplay as please.

Going alone isn't really a good or bad thing. You can make lots of friends there and hang out with people who have similar interests. Game rooms, karaoke rooms, panels things like that you can easily find someone who has similar interests like you.

There's a cosplay suggestion thread so you might want to try there [but be sure to offer suggestions first] and they'll be more than happy to throw a list of characters towards you.

At least you have a handsome face!

I'm ok with going alone and meeting new people, I think it will be fun.

I just want to look like the character I'm trying to cosplay as so if I spill spaghetti it more cute than horrible.

I don't know if i'm stupid or something but I have looked through the threads for what I'm guessing what you call a 'suggestion thread' and not been able to find one. If you could link it that would be most excellent.

Thanks for your non-angry response to a newb anyway. Never knew nice people were on 4chan, /cgl/ has my vote for nicest board.

I really like this suggestion, but I am going to spend my free time for a year making this outfit if it's the one I decide on.

>>6838682
Thanks for your help I will keep an eye out for the new thread, I really want to be sure before I commit. I am going to put quite a bit of effort into this.

Two questions, I have a con weekend after this and I had a hair disaster and need a wig in time to style it, what wigs sites have faster shipping that won't break the bank?

Also graduating college has put cosplay on the back burner and I want at least one new costume to debut and so I was thinking of doing a sort of gijinka of K-9 from Doctor Who with a full skirt that emulates his body. Is this a bad costume idea in general?

Yay a Cosplay help thread, after a quick scan of the catalog, i didnt see a wig thread either, So I hope its ok to post it here.
I am going to be cosplaying as Reiko Natsume from Natsume Yuujinchou. Well sorta two versions of her in a way, Her and the version Nyanko-Sensei is during season 4, I just havent't made the cat mask yet. anyway The Wig I have is far too blonde i think and is wondering if I should sharpie dye it, and what color sharpie I should try, i was thinking a peach color but then someone else suggested light brown. If I could get any feedback, that would be awesome. Also in that picture, it was rather windy and the wig isnt styled yet so. please excuse its messiness

That looks tough to gijinka and I can't quite explain why. His silhouette is a squat, boxy thing, so if you try to emulate it at all you'll have all that leg to deal with. At the same time, the silhouette seems important: can you get away with eliminating a dog's muzzle and still be recognizable? The boxy edges seem key, but will be hard to do with fabric and you'll still have rounded human bits. Aside from a few details, he's very plain, but adding detail would take away from the sleek robot look.

Honestly, I would suggest a combination of actual structure and paint for a ribcage like such. If you were to have a slightly struck out ribcage chest, you could play that into an illusion of a belly sunken in and other fun things.

I would suggets going to your local fabric/craft store and purchasing the soft foam used for couch cushions, purchased by the yard, and carve/glue a ribcage shape together and attach it into the chest of your suit, underneath the fabric, so the fabric is stretched taught over the foam rib structure, like flesh over bone. Use spray glue to adhere the fabric into the crevices of the ribcage if you want a super emaciated look. Don't use hot glue as it will melt the thin fabric and leave crusty glue spots where you've layed the hot glue.

Use the paint in subtle browns to accent and make the ribcage/other features 'pop'.

You can just take airbrush paint, found at local art stores, like Micheals, for example. And paint it on with a brush yourself, no spray can or air brush required. I believe this method is Drybrushing. I would stick to browns of varying shade to darken shadows.

At an upcoming con I was iniatly not going to do any cosplay, but while playing a video game (Counter-Strike GO) I found a model and outfit (picture included) that I had the items handly mostly that I could go as. Two things you could do. Buy two suits one black, one red, cut them apart and sew them together in the pattern you like. The second option would be buying a suit, putting it on, marking out where you want the different colors to go, adding seam allowences, cut it apart, and use that as a pattern.

dont see why not, but you should probably just use the mask as a starter point. I did that once were I just bought the wire mesh, shaped it on top and went from there so I could do my own features. The only problem I see is if you plaster it it might be too heavy for those cheap things at the store and the weak elastics they come with might make it droop.

Use a seam ripper to rip out the embroidery. Be careful not to rip the fabric underneath as well. Go thread by thread if you have to; it's time consuming but the best way to do it. If you have a pair of tweezers, use them to pull out the little threads that get stuck.

Once you remove the embroidery, the fabric underneath may not look that great due to all the holes punched in the fabric from sewing the logo on. It will probably need a little TLC.

Just bought this wooden practice sword that I plan to turn into the BRS black blade (http://overmanxan.deviantart.com/art/Figma-BRS-Black-Blade-176875994)<wbr> and had 2 questions:

First, would silver spraypaint show up on this black without priming it? Or would it be best to spraypaint it with white then go with the silver? (I don't have time to go with the "proper" way of sanding and painting so this is the best I can do right now)

Next, for the guard of the sword that I want to create that is linked in the first paragraph what would be the best method of modding for that? I am very new to prop molding so I don't really know where to start..along with the fact that I can't really find any good tutorials on molding guards to paste seperatly from the sword.

Silver will show up. Honestly, metallics pop better against black than white so you're better off with the black base. But if there's something over the black (like a topcoat) it could prevent the silver paint from sticking. Try it, and if it doesn't work you may have to sand it.

You'll have to sculpt any new details on top of the existing sword.

Would using fabric glue to attach bias tape on a pleated skirt be ok? Just a line of color near the bottom. The bias isn't very "wide", so I'm a bit worried I might fuck it up and it turns out crooked or that the stitching might show.

So I wish to make a Skeksis (Dark Crystal) costume.

Problem is, I have less than a week. And not much a budget.

I do have casting supplies, enough resin to cast the base of the Skeksis and 'beak/teeth' head, a bit of silicone....

I plan to sculpt the very base of the skeksis head as two low detail, hollow pieces, then sculpt clay OVER that and make an ultra cal mold, cast silicone and apply the more detailed, pigmented cast silicone skin over the face.

Question; How in the hell do you paint silicone?
I was thinking FUSE FX silicone paints but I'm unsure if I can afford that on my broke ass budget right now.

Due to a limited supply of silicone, the hands will probably be sculpt foam with some sort of fabric covering them, airbrushed for detail.

TL;DR Attempting something moderately big and I have little idea what I'm doing, a week left to do this. And silicone paints? What do.

er, that example was for a pretty wide angled corner. I just grabbed a scrap example that I had lying around and can take a picture if you want. For a 90 degree corner obviously you'll want to make a 90 degree cut in the fabric instead of that wider angle I have there.

Lastly is this crude Zangoose pattern I have, you can see how the head is designed so it would have a nose. So you can design something similar, just keep the "neck" line (where the cat's head would connect to the body) to be the same so you can sew on the newer fox head onto the cat body with little trouble.

Let me highlight the problems I'm having so far with this one

>What type of jacket does that look like?
My friends are saying it looks like a blue leather jacket but I think it might be something else

>Also the pants and boots as well

>the Bat symbol on the face
I previously posted on here and someone advised that I should either make a Bat symbol mask (I'll need a tutorial for that) or as another suggested "The other option is using rigid wrap or paper mache. Mold it around your face, then draw and cut out the symbol once it's completely dry. Then, you have your friend trace the symbol since it'll perfectly match your face and fill it in the with the facepaint"

Which sounds best? Or better what would be best for someone who has no experience doing this?

Get some pattern making books. It's seriously the best way. Pattern Drafting for Women's/Men's Fashion by Winfred Aldrich is great for common details like sleeve types, collar types, button stands, that sort of thing, and you can pick up the older editions for not too much money. Once you get a grip on the basic stuff, if you want to get more experimental, look at the Pattern Magic books by Tomoko Nakamichi; they have all sorts of weird and wonderful tutorials for interesting structural details that would doubtless be useful for cosplay.

Just don't buy anything called 'pattern making for home sewing' or anything like that; they're not thorough enough and the tutorials are quite twee.

Also, if you have a dressform, you can try draping on the stand (there's books on that too). I can't help you with that, since I prefer flat drafting, but if you're more of a creative/visual person rather than a logical/mathematical person, it may suit you better.

I'm going to start my Maou cape tomorrow, but I'm not 100% on how to do it. I sketched up this, does this look like it could work?

I'm thinking it would basically be a trapezoid (wider on the bottom for more volume/dramatic movement possibilities) with the neck cut out for the back, then two (on on each side) fairly regular rectangle panels to be those bits on the font. They'd be sewn on the top of the shoulder, and along the side of my torso, curved along the shoulder so it doesn't give me pointy shoulders.

Does that make sense?
