"Legit cosplayers"

>> No.6829302

The size of your tits and the number of youtube followers you have bear no relation to whether you are or are not a 'legit' cosplayer, as if the idea of there being 'legit' cosplayers wasn't so ridiculous. Having massive tits or being flatchested does not stop you from doing anything other than perhaps underwear modelling. Having lots of people or no people subscribe or like a page you made doesn't enable you to or stop you from putting on silly outfits.

If you dress up as a fictional character outside of Halloween, you can call yourself a cosplayer. That's all there is to it. Are you a GOOD cosplayer? Up for debate. But you are a cosplayer.

Mostly because good looking people are seen as privileged, which is true to some extent. If you look attractive people will always be paying attention to you and wanting to be your friend. A hobby isn't really seen as necessary to make friends or get attention. And being attractive usually takes some effort, so being sociable and presentable is taking up all of your time, you don't have time to collect yugioh cards. But that's just me trying to be logical about it.

There's also a lot of "average" people that were looked down on by the 10/10s when they were younger, and it's given them a bit of a complex. They're jealous that these people have the looks, get to have fun with their hobby, and probably attractive the attention of the people they thought were like them. I didn't have that issue growing up, so while I prefer people be actual fans of stuff, I don't really get mad at attractive people who might be doing it for attention.

It isn't. It never will be. No, not even saying Japan does it that way makes it ok. Japan didn't start cosplay. It started over in the US and that is what defines it.

If you want to buy it, cool. But it's just you putting on a costume.

I dont know why so many people think cosplay started in Japan. The word "cosplay" is from Japan, but cosplay started in the US at Sci fi and Star trek cons. People make their own shit. Stop trying to earn the same respect by just buying your stuff from china versus people who actually sew.

>The vast majority of cosplayers make their own cosplays.
That's only because most of the time, to get a costume in the quality you want in the exact way you want it, the only option is to make it yourself. If there was some store we could all go to that had perfect costumes with flawless props, etc we'd all go to it in a heartbeat. Most cosplayers in Japan (the place where cosplay was popularized and we emulate) buy their costumes.

Most cosplayers brush their teeth in the morning. Does that mean you're not a real cosplayer unless you brush your teeth?

>> No.6833491

I'll be okay with someone wearing a costume that they didn't make, but certainly I'll give my fair shade of credit if I see someone make a nice cosplay on their own. It's paying attention to their talent as a seamstress, but that's each person's personal opinion of whether they regard sewing as a talented hobby.

After going through years of sewing and I see other people's work, I feel like I can empathize with their pain and journeys in making these costumes. That's where I give my respect to them. I'm assuming other people who are models or cosplayers for the fun part give their respect or whatever more to people who look the part, implying their attractiveness or ability to put on the wig properly or something.

>> No.6833521

>>6833490
Exactly. Even I make my costumes but in Japan, where the word originated, people generally don't. Cosplay is about wearing a costume. If you are more involved in the hobby and make your own, that's great, and you'll probably get compliments on it. Be happy with that.

My throw-in on the "make your own cosplay" vs store bought debate is: do what the hell you want.

It's all about intent. If you want to go to an anime convention and buy a $50 naruto jumpsuit without a wig, shoes, headband or anything else that's your call mate. There's no rules about how good you have to be in order to enjoy dressing up. When you read a book, the book doesn't go "What are the three main themes prevalent in chapters 4-7?" and if you fail to answer correctly it slams shut. Because that's not how hobbies work.

In the competitive cosplay community (cosplay contests, masquerades, etc) whether or not you made your costume is very important, because you are graded on craftsmanship, and if you didn't make the costume, what points would you deserve? That's the only place where it's fair to deem store-bought cosplay as inappropriate. And (shooting for perhaps the first or second successful/accurate anaology ITT) this is sort of like gaming. There are those that buy computers specifically for certain games, practice for grueling hours, read up on all the newest patches and strategies, play competitively and in tournaments for big money, and occupies that top league in ranked play for whatever game. And then there are those that casually play. They played the game on single-player normal difficulty, beat it, and moved on. Just because they aren't as intense about gaming as the very best doesn't mean that they aren't allowed to enjoy doing it.

You don't see half as many people getting snippy with each others' halloween costumes, so why should it be any different any other time of the year?

Jesus christ.

I don't think Jessica is originally fake, maybe she is now that she is getting money, I doubt she really is into all of the stuff that she cosplays but if someone is paying her to put on a costume and look good then good for her. There are candid videos of her sitting down in her school's anime club before she even got famous. Also she does seem to have some knowledge on anime. For instance in this post, she said she likes Rahxephon (which is kind of obscured in the first place) better than NGE.
