Can we get a Steampunk cosplay thread going?

rofl, using Kato as a bad example is a bit silly. She kind of has a hold on the whole 'steampunk inspired' fashion market you know.

No one made Kato look silly, she made that one her self.

my one personal peeve with steampunks

>adding goggles where they aren't needed

a fucking princess-like character is NOT gonna need goggles
someone who works with actual things than can hurt their eyeballs are gonna need them

in most cases, it's goths who discovered brown and michael's scrap-booking gears.

My personal problem with it is that I have yet to see a cosplayer actually grasp and use the -punk part of steampunk.

It's like if Cyberpunk cosplayers only did the moguls and rich fucks, but even worse somehow because it's not even accurate to the time they profess to be copying.

I think a lot of people are kind of afraid to touch the politics of that era, it might make them feel racist. Although in a lot of steampunk fiction there's enough alternate history stuff that you could have race or gender politics be less one sided if you wanted.

My pet peeve is when people put together "outfits" with no justification. Like... your necklace is really pretty with all those watch bits. What are they supposed to do? Why does your female character need practical trousers instead of a skirt but still wear stripper heels?

I'm interested to know more about steampunk, is there any good websites that you guys will recommend to check out? I'm looking into the clothings, aesthetics, character origin and so on.

('cause upon Googling the results only shows me things like steampunk.com which I find not so helpful)

Sage for no contribution.

>> No.6821932

I think my beef with steampunk cosplay is that if I'm going to read or watch something steampunk, it's not for the character design, it's for all the crazy machines and steam-powered, clockwork inventions, and cosplay really doesn't capture any of that.

no, she sells her modeling and editing skills to brands. So literally they pay her to wear the clothing, shoot the photoshoot and then edit the pictures, she sends them back and then they use them.

Anyway, probably my favorite steampunk outfits I've ever seen.

Well it can kind of be... the thing that people have forgotten, or I guess newer people never seen to know, about steampunk is you're supposed to make a Character that fits into the world of Steampunk. And it's supposed to make sense. If I see you wear goggle over the brim of a top hat I'm going to think you're an idiot, because you wouldn't be able to pull those goggles down and use them with any kind of ease or efficiancy, so it's form without function, which does not work in the steampunk world. You don't need fucking gadgets out the ass if it doesn't make sense for your character. As for the 'punk' aspect, that's hard to do with a costume without doing a more role playing aspect of it (maybe you have some weird patches/emblems and you can go on about a group of people you are affiliated with that are attempting to fight the status quo or something, idfk)

So study the fashion and get it right, make a character, and balance form and function with that character into something that makes SENSE

what if she's an airship piloting princess?

ofc the black people make that shit look good. Black dudes make the dumbest shit and color combos look good I am kind of hella jelly

>>6822799
That's exactly what I meant. There's so much cool stuff you could be doing- so much crazy shit was going on around that time period. You have the Luddites (who were not against machines per-se, but the destruction of the artisan-based economies and guilds) and all sorts of fun Labor issues and fucking commies and nutters and there's so much stuff out there besides 'oh ho i'm an adventurer pip pip (and they're always fucking pseudo-british)' or 'I'm an AIRSHIP PERSON'. And like a disturbing amount of women going about in what would be underwear at the time. Seriously, come on. Just google it.

I would even take 'I'm from the colonies' or anything that isn't fucking british god damn at least do pseudo-German or something!

See, this is my problem with steampunk. You're trying to describe it as both a fashion in one breath, and a character costume in the other. No. It can only be one or the other. If you're portraying a character, it's a costume. Plain and simple. Fashion is dressing yourself, not a character. So which is it?
