Some seller is trying to sell this on Etsy for $250.

This is from her Etsy profile:

"I started up my own small business on my own a few years ago. I've been sewing since I was fourteen and I'm a certified costume designer from ASU. My mother has been sewing for over 40 years. Everything that comes from this store is made by both of us, myself or her. I specialize in recreating costumes from television and wedding dresses. A couple of my items are Bella Swan's wedding dress replica, Bella's Nightmare Dress and a special surprise one coming up here soon. I created my Etsy store to help pay for college classes for myself and my Fiance who wants to become a special education High School Teacher. 20% of everything I make on Etsy goes into a costume fund for my local college to help out our theatrical department , that's music, theater, dance, art shows. Thank you for looking at my items and profile."

I don't normally tear cosplayers a new one for having sub-par construction, since they just do it for fun, but someone who sews professionally should have better work in even just three years of cosplay experience. I wouldn't pay $50 for this, let alone $250. She needs to step back, look at her work objectively, and adjust her prices to her skill level and materials until she improves.

I usually line dress bodices, jackets and coat for stability and comfort. Shirts and less structured garments don't usually need lining unless the fabric is scratchy. I guess for things like OP I would line the boloro and the corset. The skirt has a pettis but that fabric lookspretty thin so I might line the skirt too, idol.

Ahh, I didn't mean to say need a degree. I just meant that you can get a degree. Of course you can go straight to work and just work your way up that way by building your portfolio and contacts, but a degree is probably faster if you go to a good uni.

>> No.6812931

To be fair though, a certificate is sort of different than a degree? I was more reading 'certified' in the sense that you have some kind of certification from a business guild or something like that, not a degree from a school.

>> No.6812942

>>6812931
Ah, that makes sense. There actually is a Costume Designers Guild, but I don't know that they provide certification of any sort. I think it's all down to your portfolio really (whether the work in it is from a degree or industry). But it sounds like by 'certified' she just means she has a degree (which doesn't necessarily mean she's any good). What's ASU? Is that where she's from or where she studied?

A certificate is very different from a degree. A certificate can be completed in a year or less, and is only a certification in something. A degree is at least 2 years.

And, just because you have a degree in costume design does not mean you actually are any good at it. (This can apply to most things, to be fair) Remember, schools NEED people to graduate in order to receive funding, so they are all going to have their share of idiots graduating just to reach their quotas.
