>Want to do Gundam cosplay for Otakon

Did people who go to anime conventions ever actually like anime, or is this a recent thing?

>> No.6790538

most homestucks are weebs tho, part of them are from the hetalia and other fantoms

>> No.6790540

All of the other nerd factions have taken over and conventions are slowly becoming less anime oriented even when they have anime in their name. There's still plenty of anime fans there, they're just not the majority.

It's weird because I can remember just 5 years ago when I got all kinds of shit for wearing a Disney costume at an anime con. Now people do it all of the time without batting an eye.

>> No.6790544

>>6790534
The amount of anime at anime conventions has plummeted hard. Basically they have all become general nerdathons with things like Homestuck, Supernatural, Dr. Who, My Little Pony and various other western properties littering the hallways. If we got all these western cosplayers (which are almost always bad) and the same amount of good anime cosplayers of years past, I wouldn't mind so much, but the number of good anime cosplayers has fucking tanked. It sucks.

I for one blame Tumblr.

OP here. The last time I was even at Otakon was 2008, and I don't remember half of this shit. Goddamn I would take thousands of Narutards again over Homestuck shit. At least Naruto is anime.

The least these conventions can do is stop approving non-anime related panels, but they won't even do that because they know this shit sells.

Are you confusing gatherings for photoshoots? If you want a photoshoot, go and contact a photographer. Then you'll have them all by yourself, you'll get some good photos, and you'll be good to go.

Seriously, gatherings are horrible and a waste of time for photographers unless they are trying to find someone to do a shoot with. If you go directly the problem is solved immediately.

The ones that allow themselves to be more multi platform have been growing tremendously. Cons in of themselves don't really make much of a profit off the event unless they're quite large. As long as they keep having anime programming along with non-anime I don't think the diversity hurts.

Semantics aren't really the issue here. The point is that there shouldn't be enough people cosplaying from any of those things at an anime convention to warrant a gathering or a photoshoot.

my little pony is popular with cosplayers because it's a little girls show, it's famous and won't get you any hate, the costumes aren't difficult and you can pretty much do whatever you want as it's your interpretation of cartoon ponies.
It's a bit like disney except that people can't call you infantile (because of the whole brony thing) and cosplay-wise it's more popular

If you're doing a mecha Gundam cosplay, I'm pretty sure people will already take photos of you.

And besides, Gundam (unfortunately) isn't really that big in the anime community anymore, so it gets less attention and things with more attention get more fans, which in turn leads to someone actually organizing a meet for it.

I really want to cosplay Kamille,but I feel that it won't really be worth it to make the cosplay and be totally alone in it. I love the autistic child to death, but the best I'll get for characters from Zeta will be Quatro char Bagina. I don't want to be alone with a Haro ;_;

Maybe I could convince some of my friends to cosplay with me but none of them are into gundam. I can't even convince my girlfriend to give Mobile Suit Gundam a chance because she's a huge Macross fan. It is suffering.

The age of the otaku is over. Years ago anime was an underground thing in the west for which only a subculture of silly college kids watched and appreciated. Today, anime is mainstream, all over the internet, and anybody can watch anything via streaming video. As a consequence there is no reason to be an enthusiast of anime anymore since there's no longer a sense of pride associated with it.

"anime cons" today are really just media and pop culture cons. Same as Comic-Con.

With the Sailor Moon and DBZ Anime starting again there will probably be some renewed interest in the media soon.

I stopped going to Otakon because of their lack of variety, and I can see things haven't changed. The last year I went the schedule was utterly flooded with Hetalia events.

It's fine to feature certain popular shows. When it feels like one particular fandom is dominating the entire con, if you aren't into that fandom the con is boring. It's especially bad when it's non-Anime things dominating the schedule.

I'll tell you what happened..

Adult Swim and Cartoon Network decided they were too cool for anime any more, thus killing the casual anime fandom.

While there was a good portion of weebs that were technologically savvy enough to download their anime, they started to drift away around that supposed moe "boom" that made many people give up on anime for a while and take solace in social media, webcomics, and any other shit that drifted their way.

By the time these things really came into their own, things like netflix, online streaming, and easily accessible and sharable social media sites had properly saturated the lives of one-time weeaboos who have been lurking around at cons anyways. Their behavior has influenced this new wave of weeaboos and con-goers who see all these bloated fandoms and cling to those, because who doesn't want to be a part of some huge thing instead of sitting and appreciating some anime by yourself? All the jokes and unique, clever things have already been done for you!

It's a pretty shitty state of affairs.

That Pikachu drawing is freakin adorable.

You pretty much nailed most of it. Thanks to fb, webcomics are the new fad, so everyone is flocking to webcomics and cosplaying shit I dont know or care about at cons. And because of tumblr, shows like Supernatural, Doctor who, Avengers and Sherlock are all you see at cons now.

also, fuck tumblr for making me witness so much homestuck and my little pony.

I've been doing anime conventions for about eight years, and I've noticed not just a drop-off in doing actual Japan-themed shit, but a dropoff in cosplay--more people dressing like shitty ravers, or conwhores (male and female).

Cons have become this event to "be weird" but the genuine weirdos are getting shoved to the side more and more. I also could be a bitter oldfag but it seems cons are skewing younger as well--a lot more under-18 types wandering around.

People nowadays don't see anime as an artform.

And why should they? The market has hit a saturation point, and a creative slump for almost over 10 years now.

It's worse for people like me. I like a lot of manga that has great stories...but everyone is just wearing plainclothes. So costumes can't be done really.

That's what I was kinda getting at. Shin Megami Tensei is a series, and people mostly cosplay from 3 parts of that series Persona 3/Persona 4/Devil Survivor 2 (now that it has an anime)

Cathrine isn't SMT Standard, so I wouldn't include it in the 3 parts that are cosplayed, but it is easy to lump together because Golden Playhouse does share quite a few things with Shin Megami Tensei and is an Atlus game.

I am mad as balls that there are like 4 homestuck panels that I cared to count at Fanime and my Shin Megami Tensei panel didn't get in. Oh well.

I blame video game cosplayers. Slippery slope.

In all seriousness, I'm cool with it. For all I know that Wonder Woman I'm seeing was Lum on Friday. Or she's going to a couple different cons this year and takes WW and Lum to the gaming con too. Or she's been anime and game characters for five years straight and she finally feels up to crafting a breastplate or ran out of other characters. Maybe her cat ate her Agrias cosplay so she threw a backup cosplay in her suitcase. I don't know. I don't give a shit.

A lot of people go to the same cons each year as an annual get-together with friends, or because there's only a few cons in their area. If they want to come to an anime con and have fun as a Mass Effect character, it's not going to ruin my day.

Plus, a lot of the current in things - Homestuck, My Little Pony, Adventure Time - have pretty simple costume designs that a new cosplayer has a better chance of throwing together without looking too awful, even if they step outside of closet cosplay (and hopefully learn a thing or two). They're the new Death Note/mall headband Naruto kids. If they're lazy prom dress cosplayer or get overambitious and show up in a shitty fancygala dress, well, they were gonna look like shit anyway, and at least it's not besmirching a series you like, right?

Most people who go to anime conventions tend to be fans of anime, though they're usually fans of other things as well. Certain interests just seem to group together I guess.

I've contemplated doing a Homestuck cosplay before and I've been a fan of anime for far longer than I was of Homestuck... that said I've also had a sudden interest in making a Ranma (male version not female version) cosplay.
