I'll be honest: I like these shoes a lot more for the costume, but that cheap lace is hideous. Is there any way you can take that lace out and use something nicer? Even just making your own ruffles from high-quality ribbon would look better than that cheap discount Joann's stuff.

Thanks! I could since it's only glued on, however its the same trims I used on the rest of the costume so I'd rather just keep it the same. I also feel like the shoes aren't really a big part of the costume either so I don't want to redo them multiple times (aka I am lazy and have 2 other costumes I need to focus on as well). But thank you for your honest input! On my other sakizo costume I'll take your advice and make my own ruffles so it's nicer.

Slowly but surely making progress on Colonial Jack Frost. Just have the pants to do, then I'll be done with the major sewing parts (but still have detailing and buttons to put on them). Just finished the shirt, though I'm not liking how the collar isn't laying well.

Also, my cloak keeps slipping back. Obviously it's because the back is so much heavier than the front, but does anyone have any suggestions to make it stay put so I'm not constantly being choked by my cloak?

Finally making progress on cosplays again, and been hitting the gym harder now that I'm not sick anymore. I wanna be able to look good in Yoko in time for Otakon!
Need to do a lot more work on Yoko and my Magma grunt, but Madoka Moetron is pretty much done. The ear is finished, all that is left are the shoes and a better petticoat... I'm not sure how to get the right shape of the skirt, but I'll figure it out.

But...that photoshop, girl. I can clearly see the outline where you painted your lips pink, and your eyes just make you look like an alien. I've seen you post some dumb stuff here before, like when you tried to self-promote by posting your nudes, but stop with the constant self-posting and terrible photoshop. >> No.6762287

>>6762279
Self-posting in a progress thread is fine, but she posts herself in most threads here with some regularity. She's taken recently to making threads that start with her photo and then saying something like "Who's this?" or "She's cute, anyone have more?" She's been busted self-promoting through /cgl/ many times before, and always deletes the thread when someone calls her out. But that doesn't stop her from doing it again and again, for some reason. It's a shame since she's so young and she's already ruining her reputation.

It's so obvious you're defending yourself again. Go to bed, Artemis. Then, when you wake up, delete those Zero no Tsukaima panty shots and stop photoshopping the hell out of yourself. You're pretty, and you're talented enough, but the topless photos and self-promotion is stupid. If you're going to cosplay, do it for the right reasons and not just because you want to be the next Yaya or JNig.
>post nudes on a blue board!
No thanks.

>> No.6762475

>>6762428
Who do you think you are? I mean really if she was trying to be cosplay famous she wouldn't be doing shots from series like Zero No Tsukaima that isn't super popular. And if you actually knew the source material you would realize that it's an ecchi series, so of course there can be fanservice shots. I just wanna know why you have a vendetta out against her, when she just came in asking some cosplay advice. It shows you really don't know her that well, since she doesn't ever start threads on here and actually rarely posts on these boards. Also it's laughable you think she is young. Just makes you look like you're an asshole when all it sounds like is you are butthurt and a prude when it comes to cosplay.

>> No.6762483

>>6762475
I don't have a vendetta. I was giving you constructive criticism. You should lay off the photoshop, especially when it's that obvious. And whether it's canon or not, having nudes online is generally not a good idea. The photoshop, nudes, and self-posting are all pointing towards attention whore. I was hoping you were better than that, that's all. Hopefully, you'll clean up your act and won't be so disappointing in the future. You've got some talent, but it's wasted when you spend the rest of your free time looking for attention in all the wrong ways.

when you do the smoothing on the face, after you do the blur layer, make sure you only up the transparency to 30% max, also make sure when you do the lipstick, channel select the lips and fill it in on a second layer, make sure the transparency is low on that too.

Who the hell do you people think I am? I have never posted nudes before. I don't even have nudes. And I have two pictures up of my ZnT cosplay. my nipples are covered, my crotch is covered and my ass is covered because I'm laying on it. So if that offends I can only imagine how you feel when you go to the beach or a pool. And It seriously takes a lot of courage for me to post on here so to start a thread about myself, I would never dream of doing that. Sure, I've posted in Progress Threads, dA Threads, and Suggestion Threads before but "Self Promoting?" No way. Also these posts aren't mine. I wasn't even online at that time. Not that it matters, you all will probably still accuse me of defending myself even though doing it and pretending to not be me is not my style.
Anyways I did not do anything overly ridiculous to the picture. Yes, I fixed my abysmal dark circles, and I did do a little airbrushing to blend the touch up on my dark circles and I brightened my eyes so you can see the color of the contacts. Also, I did not paint the pink on my lips with photoshop that is Sephora's no.10 (I can't remember the name I just liked that it looked bubblegum pink) I will agree, the foundation is a little dark I'm unsure if that is the lighting (Which I did mess with the brightness and contrast a bit in the picture which could also be why the lipstick color jumps out) or I really have gotten paler.
Oh and I'm definitely going to fix the bangs now, thank you. I've been fighting with them to stay centered but they keep falling in a side swept manner.
I'll also try some of the things mentioned above with the fur so I don't have to cut it. Thank you!

>> No.6767084

You'd be surprised how well poster board, tape, and papermache works wonders. Pretty much fold the poster board around your sword, and tape it to close. You'll cut parts of the board so it'll look to fit better, like near the tip of the sword. Paper mache the posterboard, but take your time. What you don't want happening is the poster board getting super soggy and collapsing under wet paper, it should be able to hold up to the moisture till it dries. Just take your time with the paper mache layers (let the first layer dry, and then add the next layer). If you let it dry completely, inside and out, you can always resheath your sword to see how it is fitting. After you're done with paper mache, then you can sand, prime, paint, seal it.

>> No.6767098

>>6767084
Ooh, thanks. I will remember that. Any particular paper mache mixture that you find works best? I haven't done it since high school so I can't remember at all what to use.

>> No.6767127

>>6767098
Basic water and flour for me (sorry I forgot the ratio, I just add water to flour till I get a bit of a glue paste out of it). It's surprisingly hard when you take your time with it to let each layer dry, and then about 3-5 layers in it's pretty solid. And sanding takes time too because it's usually a bit lumpy in the end. Sanding the paper mache smooth will let the paint job look much nicer, and even then I sand the primed surface and reprime... Yea I'm a perfectionist, haha. But it's worth having a very smooth surface, people can hardly believe it's paper mache.

>> No.6767155

>>6767001
Following up on >>6767084 and >>6767127's advice (and I'm not the person who posted those), I found that gesso paint helps a lot for further smoothness. Like the paper mache, it's better if you apply it layer by layer once each other is completely dry, sanding in between and then having a high grit sand paper for the last sanding.

>I am a complete noob at prop stuff too but I followed my friends' advice on gesso paint and I was mighty pleased.

You'll probably want to dye it again. Use the apple green but mix in a darker green with it. Or just do a light amount of the darker green dye in the water to tint your skirt darker. The bottle color is always going to be darker then what your fabric is, especially on a blend.

Also starting to hunt around stuff to do this version of Videl. It's almost goodwill level. Oddly enough, was talking with a friend and was talking about Lana from Archer. I found it way easier to find a basic red turtleneck dress then a basic white turtleneck dress on ebay. I'll be hitting up goodwill shortly for the base dress to mod.

I'm really disappointing that I can't afford better materials for this costume. I can't afford Worbla so I am stuck with craft foam and creativity.

So here is a shot of my slightly less than half finished Serge vest. Clearly, still have a lot to do. left side needs to be sewn in place, as does the back. I need to add in the side slashes, and while I do like my spidey belt, it may have to be replaced before I wear this one out.
I'm not going the maille route for this as this costume is mostly for comfort purposes. Something to wear to picnics and maybe on Sundays at cons, so I didn't want to spend months working on pvc maille, when I have other, more labor intensive projects that I want to focus on right now.

I will be bulking up before I wear it to a con and even though I can't make the armor any bulkier due to the constraints of craft foam I will be adding details to it like fur to at least make it appear bigger.

Thanks for the input though!

slam some darts on that elbow, it's just a rolled diamond. Look at the refs.

attach the elbow to your own elbow. Use a wide strap so it doesn't suck to wear.

Strap the spaulders to your upper arm, armor should fit fairly close there and on your lower arm, elbow overlapping both and fitting a bit looser.

Paint looks ok, could be darker overall, I think.

I followed this tutorial pretty closely, including how to make the head armature.

http://tatter-hood.deviantart.com/art/How-to-Make-an-Asari-Latex-Headpiece-296400670

I used oil based clay for sculpting (van aken plastalina), ultracal 30 for molding, and I used a slip cast latex from motion picture FX (I was going to use monster makers latex but shipping cost a fortune)
Supplies cost me about $120 so far (and I still need to buy more latex to do the final pull), and I haven't bought anything to paint it yet. My plan was to get some pros-aide and mix up some PAX for painting, which I'll also be able to use for body paint. Unfortunately, I haven't found any pros-aide locally.
Just FYI, you'll need about 1 quart of latex to do one head piece (if you don't mind slush casting)

If price is your concern, it might be worthwhile just ordering a headpiece from the mad masker, since I think she charges about $100 for an unpainted one. Maybe it was $150; I can't remember.

Thank you for the compliments everyone ^^. Ive still got alot of adjusting and paint details to go though till this is complete. I'm still working on my Goldion hammer as well. I was hoping to be almost done tonight but I ran out of hot glue :(

This wont be NEARLY as light as I originally hoped. Even though its just foamboard and thin cardboard its going to be pretty unwieldy. The handle should be long enough for me to rest it on the ground if I need to relax my arm a bit though.

The second picture shows the big flower stuck into the ponytail, the third picture shows it without it, and the fourth shows it added into the feather and flower comb.

I don't think that material is the problem. There are many ways to create a great armor by taking different ways and I guess, you've done an amazing job. However you can improve your costume a lot by a better painting. Try to add clear shaddows and highlights, add battle scars and stuff and use a more realistic looking fur and I promise you'll be much more satiesfied with your costume at the end!

There are really a lot of stuff you can built armor with. My favourite material is Worbla and Wonderflex, but this really depends on the shape of the armor. If your pieces will be pretty flat, try these materials out. If you want to make more bulky like something from Monster Hunter for example, try to work with foam. However I always suggest to search for a ton of progress photos and tutorials of other cosplayers. This is always the best start for your own project.

>>6790185
Actual I didn't use any form to create the shape. They consist just out of two almond shaped pieces I connected with each other. It's sometimes pretty hard to work without a form you can shape your Worbla on, but the craft foam inside is a great help.

First i'd like to say thank you for your help. I'm sure you're asked all the time for it with little given in return.

I'm not exactly cosplaying, more or less i'm joining a larp and while the two are different I do see similarities.
So i've gone with an original costume that draws from a few familiar things.
For instance the tunic I saw some cosplay Link/zelda characters. Chainmail was kind of a duh, thing. Just took forever haha. And the pauldron I've seen many cosplayers of Cloud Strife who hada pauldron and I've seen a few people work with many different materials.
So i'm kind of just pick and choosing certain things that I can and can't work with.
Hope to post pics soon.

Goldion hammer is pretty much done. The paint needs another coat though as I was running out of daylight and had to rush a bit. The handle will be sanded some then painted grey,

I don't have a scale at home to weight this but I am guessing around 15-25 lbs? Its hard to tell since its very unbalanced. Unsure if I will be able to use it much because of this.

I also added some leftover EL tape to the front of the helmets spartan crest.

With Fanime coming up, I'm alternating between sewing costumes, and all my Artist Alley stuff. Mostly includes, finishing up all my Tesseracts to sell, getting the "party" and "mood" lights, drawing, printing, sculpting horns and hoping my makeup bags come in time. I'm a little sad though cause one of my table Helpers had to cancel her trip due to financial issues so there goes some of my aid getting things carried there cause of the one trip rule.

I'm almost tempted to sculpt some tiny faun/deer antler horns with the sudden craze going around but I'm not sure if they'd be in a high demand in an artist alley.

I still need to finish my hat and pants and details for Miriel for our Fire Emblem Awakening group and finish up my boyfriend's coat for Romania for our Hetalia group.

The process of making an ultracal mold. Fun but messy times!

The latex mask is about 5 layers of latex with tissues added into the 3-5 layers for added strength. Still need to clean the raw casting though.

Even though it's more tedious and not too accepting of a firm touch, crepe paper is proving to be pretty awesome here, at least for the detail areas. The other side looks great and you can't even tell where the layers were put down.

Oh dear god. That helmet will look hideous unless you drown it in bondo. The general rule of thumb with pepakura is the more vertices the less sanding. I would suggest downloading this model and add details with paper clay, foam core, craft foam, styrene, or something similar.

I would go here for a step by step tutorial.

My first time doing anything like this so I researched and asked a lot of questions but the tissue advice came from my make up friend who suggested that I add some sort of reinforcement if I was paranoid the 5 layers wouldn't be enough on their own.

Like you I was actually quite skeptic about it but it did work out after all, the cowl is pretty strong and I can't rip the damn thing!

>Like you I was actually quite skeptic about it but it did work out after all, the cowl is pretty strong and I can't rip the damn thing!

You really don't need to brush it up in layers, and the tissue isn't really doing a thing. You want to brush in one layer to capture detail and avoid surface bubbles, avoid the flange (In your pic it looked like you were brushing it up over the flange.) pop the mold together, strap it up for a tight fit, and pour in more latex and swish the mold around for coverage and to get air bubbles out. Once you get the thickness you want pour out the remainder. Go back every so often and swish it around to keep it from pooling at the top of the head. Sometimes I store my molds bottom-down so the excess can drain out into a pan or w/e but this isn't always necessary.

heheh hey there :"D I suppose I posted so many photos of this thing on tumblr it's hard to not know it's me.
Anywho, I got these insulation foam boards at home depot. $15 for fifteen feet of it. About six bucks for spray adhesive to glue the cut pieces together. Carve away with a utility razor. Sand some, then I covered with spackle. Some green container from home depot. Six bucks for the medium sized one. Heard that the real large bucket is only fifteen. sanded, painted. Though.... I have heard of plastidip over carved insulation foam works nice too. about five bucks a can and would need multiple but it might be easier then spackle and sanding?

Haha, yeah, your crosshairs came out really great! Thankfully I already had a pile of insufoam and other goodies sitting around for this one, so I've only really invested maybe 15 bucks into it so far. The real part about this whole deal that's driving me though is the crepe paper experiment - I read about someone using it elsewhere but shell if I can remember. It's coming out reely nice though which makes me happy. I CAN'T WAIT TO FINISH IT.

If you reenforce your edges and faces on the inside of the helmet, when you resin the outside, you will keep the hard edges.2-3 layers of resin would set it up right. then take out the reinforcements and you got a good edge.

Working on Fourze v2
25 days to finish it.
This pic is a day old. I primed it, spot puttied it and wet sanded. But I saw 2 spots in dire need of more bondo so thats happening tomorrow. but for now, more foam limbs~

Adhesion promoter. Buy it love it use it. Solves the cracking issue. Still have a few minor ones here and there from an heavy flex, but otherwise its good to go.
