For me the last two days were more exciting than Friday - but then again I was in the Artist Alley and Friday was absolutely dead in terms of foot traffic.

Jessica DiCicco stopped at my table and was looking at my Adventure Time art and without knowing it was her - I asked if she was going to the Flame Princess signing. She told me she was and she'd see me there. Imagine my embarrassment when I got to the signing and saw that the lady at my table had been the voice actress all along.

Man, that was super awkward, but she came by my table today too to sign something else for me since I brought her a poster.

It was a pretty decent con after Friday! They definitely were underprepared/not ready for set up on Thursday night and a lot of vendors were upset about that. And there were no programming guides until Saturday morning which was a little ridiculous. The vendor wifi situation was kind of dumb too - but I guess they're working out the kinks because of the new management.

I kind of felt bad for the people having the wedding at the same time as Conji though.

>>6768284
Yeahh! My friend and I were talking about that too. Sunday is when it got really bad with the conflicts between the wedding and the con.

Let me break it down this way:

Friday - Absolute mess. Dead con (thanks to Kyary concert in LA, school, work.) No program guide. No main event.
Saturday - Pretty much turned into ALA on steroids. Random LOL wedding. Not as many people ended up drunk since most of the LA crowd came in the morning and left in the evening. Con was WAY better this day.
Sunday - Dead con (was anyone staying at the hotel awake past noon?), started to sprinkle outside forcing some to go indoors.

Con should be better next year, unless the staff go back to in-fighting, bitching, and quitting. Of which case, it'll be a clusterfuck again.

Let me tell you, it is a tradition that my usual Masquerade partner and I formed after Anime Conji 2011. That tradition is to enter conji's masquerade at the last second, and hope for the best. This year I was told by a friend who works the Masq that the entry count was low, and like the first time, I agreed to enter, but my usual partner is teaching in Japan, so that isn't happening.

I ran into my friend Eric, (Psyduck) shortly after and the wheels began to turn and in 2 hours we came up with what you saw on stage.

I went saturday and sunday. It was a mess and a half. The only thing I enjoyed was the Mochi Cafe (which I got in for free being press) and the gamig room.

this leads me to the biggest problem that this and Cons like ALA always bug me: you mean to tell me you all go, even sometimes across country, to spend X amount of dollars to go to a con just to get drunk? For the amount I paid to go to these cons, I want a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I can't get anywhere else, not go to some glorified kegger.

If I wanted to get drunk with my friends, I'd call them up, dust my N64 and we'd play Goldeneye and WWF No Mercy all weekend and pay 1/3 of the price for those cons.

Another thing is there was poor allocation of staffers. I went to pick up my badge and there was one volunteer and no staffer to help him. Meanwhile, everyone was getting mad because they'd been there for 2 hours and some were even forced to no-show their panels they were hosting because of this.

When I got there on Friday and walked around (didn't get my cosplay on until like 2), the place was dead. Checking out the dealer's room we were all like "damn is this it?"

Saturday was cooler. Maguma at the masquerade was dope rofl. Sunday I bought shit and departed post-haste.

As literally everyone said, there wasn't enough programming. I disagree that the Town and Country was awful (other than having kinda shitty overpriced food if you didn't want to go into Mission Valley). Being able to smoke literally anywhere was cool too.

The main problem, I think, was a lack of attendance. It wasn't the space. Con staff, hotel staff, and volunteers were surprisingly chill, especially considering we were walking around obviously inebriated with clear open containers of drank.

Yeah, I was disappointed at first. I ended up liking it in the end. But ultimately I go to cons to mob around with my bros in costume and see cool costumes, so maybe my standards aren't patrician enough.

still, and in the context of Conji, people are paying an upwards of like 50 bucks to go, and yeah, people "ghost" and thats fine, but shit, I want those 50 dollars worth where I can have an experience, no so I can be in a room with drooling fanboys with "Vampy". Again, i'm not opposed to drinking, but I am opposed to thats the main focus, because if thats all that it is, you get shit like "Vampy" as a GOH and instead of getting a unique GOH that will make you pay for the con and see all that the con has instead of just "ghosting" and borrowing your friends badge. Sure, there will still be alot that do, I won't argue that, but i'm sure the payoff would be a more better experience overall and feel like their badge price was justified.

I think it's so just because there's a lot of little unique moments at ALA that make the con special. I get to see people from out of state, I get to hang out at a good hotel which has many awesome photo locations, pachinko machines, cozy beanbag chairs, the rum party, standup comedy shows, events that run on time, no hassle badge pickup. Hell the staff was really damn cool too. I remeember having a huge gathering downstairs and when our numbers swelled they opted to let us use an empty panel room as opposed to just kicking us out.

I guess I'm less strict on cons and focus on what they do have and how they serve people over what the could have.

I dunno, I got a new job and it's not that high paying and I'm paying more and more attention to stuff like "value". Like, how much can all the money I set aside be worth going? yeah, i'll be with friends and such, but last ALA I was at (2012) I spent most of my time in the game room, so I wondered if my money that I spent (upwards of 200+ bucks) was worth it.

I know it's a Horrible way of looking at things (the value of money compared to the value of entertainment), but when you are jobless (which i'm not now, thank god), you begin to analyze and begin to think more critically about stuff like "is X really worth it's value?" and make better choices financially.

Could it be that you felt this way toward ALA due to the fact you did spend most of your time in the game room?

I'm at least relieved that our difference in opinions is more reflective on a difference of perspective as opposed to quality. I do see entertainment as "priceless" and am a bit more willing to pay what I do in addition I like to support ALA as I believe that it "gets it right" in terms of how it treats their attendees despite the low resources it as at its disposal. In comparsion to huge cons like AX and even Fanime I feel more like the con is taking care of me when I go to ALA as opposed to just being a venue that leaves me to explore on my own.

and you bring up a good point: Conji should of been runned like ALA, but instead, it was runned like AX, and it magnifies the problems even more when it's centered on something small.

and thats fine too. It's just, growing up going to stuff like SDCC and AX, the travel and stuff and seeing all these awesome guest of honor like actual guest from the industry and guest from japan was something I would love and something I would again and again pay money for. Not for Vampy.

As far as the gaming room goes, I wasn't there ALL the time, I hosted a panel, I saw a few other panels, I went to dinner with my friends, I slept in my room. Alot. Mainly when all my friends had gone off and do their cosplay things, I take their bed and sleep. And there isn't much left to do after 12am other then get drunk (which is fine, but when I want to drink, it's because I feel like I deserve a drink, by doing hard work or something), stay at the game room or stoop to myself in the lobby till I get sleepy.

Meanwhile, I go to SDCC, i'm literally stuck in panel rooms all day and I don't see the dealer's room till sunday.

I hope you weren't the fat Link that was with a fat Asuka at the con.

Sounds like you just like big conventions like AX and SDCC. That's fine - some people just don't like small conventions.

Though, I would hate life if I all I did at SDCC was go to panels and stand in lines all day. There is so much to do at SDCC, there's no way to do it all - that's unlike a small con where you can get everything you want to do and have time to go have a drink afterward.

You know, I hope SPJA doesn't shoot themselves in the foot and screw up Anime Expo because of Anime Conji.

You might like WonderCon and Comikaze then, if you haven't already gone. I really love going to SDCC and even AX, despite it's problems, because it feels like there is always a thousand things to do or see or go to. I like my drinking to, but I'd like to have a shot and then go prowl around for something to do. It's harder to do that when the convention you're at is extremely small, so if you're not one of those people that can people watch for 6 hours, then you're going to be crazy and feel like you've wasted time and money being there.

That said, I still enjoy ALA as a small con for a lot of what's already been posted. It just seems like Anime Conji has a lot of salvage work to do for next year.

Too bad, because this is just a preview of what is going to happen at AX this year.

and I like those cons, but I hate though that it's like "I also want to have fun with my friends" and I like the smaller con environment. I guess the best middle point i've experience was Botcon. It wasn't a HUGE con, it was big and there was stuff to do all the time and I didn't feel exhausted from sensory overload nor did I feel underwhelmed from the amount of stuff to do.

No matter how much you critique them, it always falls on deaf ears and they continue to suck.

>tfw you had to work all day Saturday and than showed up on Sunday, which turned out to be shit, and everyone tells that you missed the best day of the con.

Fuck me, it's times like this I wish I was still an unemployed bum.

Why doesn't she ever smile? I've seen some where she does, but 90% of her pics are that same dead face. Her costumes are nice, but she doesn't do much to really help bring her character to life or put much feeling into her photos. Also, I never realized her hips were so wide, she appears thinner in her photos.

That was pretty good. Would have been awesome if you somehow got the Pokémon Men involved since I saw them at con.

Last year was the first time I ever heard of Conji despite living in SD my whole life, I was pretty excited to attend a con since I had missed out on a ComiCon badge but after watching videos on youtube that congoers took I emailed the people in charge asking for a refund lol

We had the skit an homage to what they do~

I've talked to them in the past on other masq ideas, but I'd love to work with them in the future. Maybe Fanime~
