Got my Mugi cosplay for MCM finished. Starting work on Homu once I've got a bit more fabric. Still not quite sure what to do for my third cosplay for MCM though. I really want to do Aya but I don't know what I'd do for accommodation, it seems kind of expensive.

MCM is a "bit of everything" con, though manga and anime publishers tend to have the biggest displays there (apart from the BBC, when they're pushing Doctor Who). Sweatdrop Studios (who are barely above self publishing) had a table 3 times bigger and 100 times more accessible than Marvel one year.
But people cosplay anything at MCM, you always see Batman, Doctor Who,Bronies etc. The 501st are often there on at least one day too. I'm thinking of going as a Space Fleet officer from Dan Dare, but have probably left it too late to do a decent one.

Anyway most of the shows I like have a mainly female cast and are forgotten relics from the late 90s/Early 2000s.

I'm a pretty big Pokemon fan but I always feel like the idea of doing Gijinkas, characters or trainer classes is just the easy way out.

Strength in numbers, and all that. I'd rather be recognised by a few fans than be a familiar face.

MCM should be good, Haven't been in about 2 years, anything changed? Had a choice of going to the Zelda symphony and one more gig, or the expo with a hotel, I opted for the symphony and gig, then went travelling, hoping it hasn't gone too down hill.

They FINALLY increased the size of the con hall. It was getting dangerously overcrowded before. It's still pretty overcrowded now, but not Monsters of Rock 1988 style.
It also appears to have diversified even more. October '12 had a stall selling Bond memorabilia and 60's - 70's paperbacks.
I hope the recently re-launched Strip Magazine will have a good presence.

I had fun, but it was incredibly warm in the building and for some reason they had the heating up full blast. I wound up missing a talk because it was just too hot in the room and I was on the verge of passing out.

Aside from that the fact it was impossible to move in the artist alley until later in the day, it was actually really good fun. I didn't go to the after party though.

Highlights were the Sailor Senshi cosplayers, the Rei cosplayer, and a really awesome Sophie from Howl's Moving Castle cosplayer.

Oh God, I saw that guy. I didn't actually talk to him. But the heating was a bit of an issue. I know a couple of cosplayers were really suffering. There was a lolita standing next to me in one of the talks who had to leave because she was about to faint, and there was another girl who was chugging water outside because she was too warm. I wasn't in cosplay or lolita which I was pretty glad about.

I was getting so angry at the people just standing still in the halls and AA, I could barely move. So many people selling shitty bead items for ridiculous prices though.

AL events are poorly and cheaply run with Towers cutting courners wherever he can to save a few quid that he can pocket himself. Thanks to the cheap and shitty venues they run their events at they make a fuck turn of cash but don't bother reinvesting it in their events.

Towers is now such a cheap skate that he can't even be bothered to cover the costs of the sub par YouTube guests that he parades round like A-List celebs and is using Crowd funding sites to cover the costs of brining in the guests that the weebs who go to his events want to see.

The average attendee of an AL event is a braindead fuckwit who thinks that Alcon and LAC are the most glorious animoo events ever despite never having been to any other established UK con. Because if they had they would realise quite how shit AL events are.

Most AL events are also fucking death traps, ALcon itself was pushing its luck at DeMonfort with 600 attendees, but now they're trying to shove 1000 into the same space. Fuck that noise.

Towers aside, take any aspect you dislike or think needs improvement about any other con, multiply by 100 and you'll get the AL equivalent. Weebtastic, profit making, no planning, no logistics, no event running skills, no organisation, probably no insurance, and they actively encourage spam, account hijacking, and site raids.

As bad as fuyu/fushi/sunny/gemucon are, AL events are still worse.

As someone who was a very active AL member back in 08/09, who knows a lot of ex-mods, I can safely say the majority of AL staff, their events (I attended 2, and several meets, never again), and Towers himself are people to stay away from. They're exactly the kind of people that give other con-goers that feeling of embarrassment that makes us wonder why we're even surprised that people think the hobby as a hole is filled with immature fuck-wits.

Fair enough you wanna have a good time bro, but interrupting meets (A dance meet at a previous expo which I can't remember was crashed by them i'm sure), shouting memes at random strangers through a megaphone, and just the sheer amount of drama that happens within AL circles, stay away. Or at the very least, be extremely apprehensive. There are several people within the AL community that don't conform to the typical AL mentality, but I can only think of three. Everyone else I know through AL grew the fuck up years ago.

The one thing I don't like about MCM is the creeper guys at night, it gets pretty ridiculous after a couple of hours dealing with their shit.

Everyone's a bit drunk, bit stoned, so naturally things get a little silly, but that's when these bastards really come out of their shells and it turns into a game of repelling magnets with everyone.

The worst thing is when they start getting violent, had this giant autist a couple years back pull his cock out and tried pinning a girl down next to the statue in a vicous attempt to dry hump her after "flirting" with her for about 4 hours, that didn't go down so well for him.

Was hotel sharing with a fewe folks too last year, we didn't know each other but there was three guys and a girl, sounds like a recipe for disaster but she was awesome, total bloke, we soon realised how creepy our room mates were and bought up the whole travelodge's terribly stocked wine cabinet and got slaughtered in the car park to deal with it. One of these guys though was beyond creepy, this tall, skinny guy with glasses and a complete nut job, threatened our lives numerous times and had been bragging about kissing some underage girl all day. He was bragging constantly about his shitty cosplay and forcing us to take drinks we didn't want and then asking us to pay for them the second we took them.

We ended up going and knocking on this door with a load of noise coming from the room and said "Hey guys, really sorry to bother you, we're staying in the room down the hall, with this incredibly creepy guy, we were wondering if we could possibly come crash with you guys for an hour until he dies of alchohol poisoning or something."

This girl rushed to the door and went "IS HE THE TALL CREEPY ONE WITH THE GLASSES? GET IN HERE NOW".

Felt so unsafe that night sleeping in the same room, although that was probably substance based paranoia.

Wat. Bristol is the oldest continually-running con in the UK (though I think it's had a few breaks, but not 'waited a decade the started a new con with the same name' type breaks). I think the first one was in the 70's, and I beleive Stan Lee has been to at least one.
I went in 2005 and 2006, and it's not that big, though. Mainly focused on American comics, or the British small press (though there's usually a 2000AD table selling the collections, and one year DC Thomson even bothered to have a small presence, handing out surplus Beano gifts). There was a bit of a manga presence, mainly Viz and (at the time) Tokyopop. Yaoi press also had quite a big table one year. It was mainly comic focused though, good for me because I like comics, but if you only like them alongside anime and gaming, it's probably not worth it unless you live in Bristol itself. (when I went a day ticket was only about £6, just treat it as a big comic shop).
