I actually went to their "cafe" a few years ago, somewhere in Gunma I think. They specialize in cosplay and act in character. I was told that all of them were able to hold conversations on the series they represented. I also saw this one girl change her outfit 4 times during their shift while I was there. Atmosphere definitely seemed to say that it's only for the most diehard otaku so that might explain the dogfaces.

I've also been to My Cup of Tea (AUSA's maid cafe) and had a wonderful time! The food was a little expensive, but it was delicious! My maid was super cute and nice too.

I kind of want to start a maid cafe, only at cons though, not enough money to have a local or anything.
How should I approach the idea? My main concern is the food. Are we going to have to hire someone or can the girls also cook? or would they be too busy with the clients?

The only maid cafe was a few years ago, and it was an "Akatsuki Cafe" with cosplayers in maid outfits. It sounds weebish but their cosplays were good, were in character, and some danced and played games with the guests. Although they only served cookies, soda, and maruchan ramen.

I think the reason the school uniform works so well is that while they're all basically wearing the same thing, the outfit is tweaked a little so show a bit of 'personality'. I'm waaay up in the north, in Sweden where we've had a sudden influx of Maid Cafés the last six-eight months or so. Probably started after NärCon last summer and Sakura Gardens introduction, a bunch of girls probably wanted to be kawaii maids too. At NärCon Vinter there were THREE maid cafés, namely Sakura Garden, Royal Rose Cafe and PyonCafé.

I keep forgetting to go to the cafés but I went to Sakura Garden at NärCon last summer. Food was good, maids are cute, we played games with our maid. Sure it was a little awkward but that's because we're swedes. I can't find any good recent photos of them, probably because they have a rather strict policy, but you can look them up at fb, "Maids of Sakura Garden" is their page.
They have a lot of rules though, some are a little silly, but they seem very focused on being professional.

Royal Rose seem extremely weeby. They're probably nice enough, but the girls and outfits aren't as professional looking.

PyonCafé have rather cute girls as well, and they have a really cute butler too. I don't know much about them though.

It's not always true, but as an anon said earlier, most western Maid Cafes are more for the maids than they are the customer.

If a maid cafe looks like they're letting just anyone work their, regardless of looks, then chances are it's not a very professional environment either. It'll just be ugly girls trying to live out their fantasies of being 'kawaii' maids.

To me, you kind of have to have four things
-decently priced and sort of good tasting food (doesn't have to be amazing but not vomit inducing)
-MATCHING. UNIFORMS.

-Performances and atmosphere. Dress the place up a little, throw around some balloons and streamers, get some live music? Have the maids dance and/or sing?

Went to AniMaid Cafe at AM2 last year. The staff was ok, had a few lookers, but I was pretty bored. They had a stage set up but didn't perform at all the time I was there. There was less server/guest interaction than I'm used to, and for the money I paid I wish they had better food.

Went to Mochi Maid Cafe at the past couple Anime Conjis and they're pretty good, they have sessions so you know what time you'll get in and they try to keep things moving at a good pace. The maids and butlers aren't all that attractive but they're not too fuggo, and most of them are pleasantly nice and high energy (sometimes too much. ) The food was pretty good ( had bomb curry one year and chicken katsu this past year ) and they give you bigger portions than most maid cafes.

But oh god. Doki Doki Cafe. I have no idea how they keep getting booked for events. I saw them first at PMX last year and they were supposed to have maid cafe on Friday and Saturday. I was only there Friday and even passed by the room they were supposed to be in multiple times and they never showed. Pretty disappointing but I just shrugged it off. Turned out that they were going to be at ALA too, serving Friday night ( the only other maid event on Friday was some craft thing the Mochi Maids did, but I didn't go to that. ) There session was fairly late at night so I decided to check it out since I wasn't doing fuck else, and when I got out of the elevator there was a crowded line outside of the door, but hey, most maid cafes I've gone to usually have pretty big lines so I decided to wait it out. 20 minutes after they were supposed to start and the staff up there had no idea where the Doki people actually were. Some other staff went to search for them because someone said they saw one of the maids promoting downstairs and brought her up, and she apparently didn't know there was supposed to be an event that Friday because she cancelled 3 days earlier.

Everyone that was waiting was told to leave because there would be no event that night. Pretty irritated but hey, shit happens. They were scheduled to have an event the next day too and I figured I ought to try one last time. There was a line again and yes, you guessed it, they were late again. But it looked like they were actually moving and serving people this time so I took the chance and waited. And waited. And waited. I was in line for almost an hour and it didn't move. By that time I was just frustrated and when I saw other people leaving I left too. Snuck a glance and most people inside were just sitting around playing games. The only thing this cafe has going for them is that their staff is pretty but I don't think the head knows shit about running events professionally. I wonder what kind of impression she left on the event coordinators for that con but I don't think I'm going to bother trying to attend any of their other events.

The maid cafe at a con near me had a twist to it. It was all dudes and they were cooking and serving pancakes. It was also 18+ so it eventually turned into half naked guys covered in syrup giving each other lap dances.

Here is the thing about maid cafes that people don't seem to get: it's originally a fetish thing. It's not just a regular cafe with pretty dresses (which is what I see in cons). The maids are supposed to sit down, chat the guy up, give them attention and all that jazz.

Everytime someone asks if they could open a real café in some city I eyeroll because we simply don't have that culture, it would be sideeye as fuck. The anon up there who mentioned Hooters wasn't that off the mark to be honest.

What kind of things should I ask for them to do in the audition? I was planning to make them smile, dance, act cute/act, serve...

Make sure they look faking good good hygiene, not a weeb and I'm sorry but the size of you maids should not differ greatly.
Maid cages where the miads differ greatly like one is 4'1 and another is almost 6 ft or a skinny maid and a landwhale maid. It looks un uniformed to me. And make sure all the outfits are odred from the same place. I seen alot where the girls wear bad satin or ugly colors.

This. You can limit the heights and weights of the maids BY buying the costumes first. Buy them in M and have maybe 1 extra in case of emergencies. No He is My Master cosplay costumes and no chemical lace. Also specify the type of socks and shoes, e.g. all opaque black thigh-highs and patent leather pumps with heels no less than 3 cm and no more than 6. There's nothing worse than a fleet of maids with different socks (sheer and opaque are a HUGE different okay) and shoes (wtf boots?).

Good hygiene, no Party City wigs, clean fingernails, basic make-up skills, shower every day of the con, outgoing and professional, priority for those with waitressing skills or previous jobs in service.

Make sure they speak a lot, read some lines. You don't want maids with overly annoying voices or voices that are just plain manly.

Ask them if they have serving experience. Last thing you want is a dramatic maid who spilled the order.

Try and find maids that are not too shy/reserved, for if they get harassed they don't just sit there and take it.

Yeah... someone did one in Detroit, Michigan and it failed badly. Things that may have led to its failure:

-Ugly as fuck maids (I've never seen maid cafe staff that hideous)
-Horrible location
-Ugly as crap interior decorating (or lack thereof)
-Terrible food (they had day old sandwiches donated from a deli ffs...)

Keep these things in mind if you're serious. Avoid failure.

My friend from MoE told me that in her audition, they asked her what moe means to her. Really. That and they asked her to demonstrate a little dancing. She couldn't dance at all, but she got the part okay.

All the maids go through many dance practice sessions to make sure they're up to snuff come events. The audition doesn't make you a maid, just means you've been selected for training.

I see no problem with any black cosplay/loli. It's the same for everybody, just be sure to pick a color scheme that goes well with your skin. I have seen gorgeous women with very very dark skin who pull off blonde because they pick one that compliments the undertone of their skin. I am whiter than paper and can't pull off blonde.
