I would say that is purely based on oppinion. I tend to avoid mordern block-whiteface as it is a universally overused design and what one would call the "stereotypical" face, but otherwise, its subjective

Well, the over-simplified/over cluttered party/costume style clown face is looked down upon for not using proper framing, and being done as an "picture" of a clown's face, rather than a true face in its own right, if that makes any sense.

Pic related: This is a costume of a clown's face. Someone painting a picture of what a clown looks like....

and here is a genuine face. Notice how its not the quality alone (I guarantee you the model in the costume pic used good makeup), but the fact that it is makeup that WORKS with the face, rather than paints over it.

You can feel the real person through it.

Point is, you can paint over a face, or you can paint on a face. Painting over a face isn't BAD per-say, but its not a real clown face.

Lets make a drinking game over how many times I have said "face" in the last sentence.

Also could you tell us a little more about contouring? I have some Homestuck friends who like to try and do troll makeup but I don't know the fist thing about it so I don't know how to help them.

Just looked it up. I am sick to death of steampunk, and their music isn't my thing (not bad, just not my taste), but their makeup is stellar.

At the risk of sounding like a hipster scumbag, I was doing steampunk before it was a thing, and it actually required, you know tinkering with real steam engines and clockwork.

I digress.

Contouring is basically using gradient shades of your base color to strengthen or soften the natural angles of your face, using the same techniques as a 2d artist would.

Pic related. Look at the thumb. Open it after. This is contouring, and forced perspective.

Sheet latex, spirit gum and chin putty.

take two ragged strips of fleshtone sheet latex, and spirit gum them on your throat. Bulk out the inside of the now hollow "lips" and use makeup to blend.

Apply gel blood, and have a night on the town.
