Otome kei thread!
Post inspirations, coords, questions and anything related.

To start off: are there any rules to this style? If so, which are they?

Otome rules:

The point of the fashion is to look cute and feminine. Often the prints have a "European" feel, specifically French or British. If the idea of Mori is to look like a girl from the Scandinavian woods, the point of Otome is to look like an jaunty/eccentric European young maiden. It doesn't have a strict silhouette like Lolita, so you can get full skirts, minis, salopettes, even shorts/pants sometimes. It's common for legs to be covered (socks, tights, etc. - maybe more out of "another place to put color/pattern" more than for modesty issues) and shoes are usually flats or low heels. There's usually prints inspired by vintage textiles, lots of colors (otome coordinates in Japan usually have a mixture of colors and patterns, though western otome coords are often made by Lolitas so they go for more matchiness). Japanese otome brands include Emily Temple Cute, Jane Marple, and Milk. ETC and Milk tend towards happy cuteness; Jane Marple is a little darker in color and theme and is mostly based on vintage British aesthetic. It is possible to do offbrand in coords and vintage stuff works well. Otome is generally more "showy" than western cute/twee fashion.

Man, can I say "usually" any more times?

Another thing - otome is often confused with "casual Lolita" but that's not all it is. Some otome brand skirts and dresses have a silhouette (and colors/prints) that work with Lolita, but otome fashion doesn't use super poofy petticoats.

I like the way you describe it, though we could generalize it a little more.
I guess we could say patterns and colors variety is welcome, but not a rule.
Prints can vary a lot too. From cute themes like rabbits, candies and bows to more serious stuff like, idk, coats of arms. Also, a coord lacking patterns and prints can look nice as well (pic related).

I have another question: we all know lolita pieces can look great in otome coords, but is it possible to wear otome clothing in lolita? Like, for example, this dress: >>6741583 How loliable is it?

As long as the dress can fit a petticoat and keep the Lolita silhouette it can be used in lolita. Though the dress you refered to would fit a petticoat, it doesn't have the right shape.

God, I love otome some. It's really difficult for me to go out dressed in lolita, I'm really shy and dislike drawing so much attention so I only wear it at tea parties or when I won't be anywhere near strangers. Otome, in another hand, I wear happily anywhere since the looks I get are more like "oh, what a cute, eccentric kid" instead of "what a freak".

It's relatively easy to wear offbrand in otome, but brands are so goddamn kawaii you'll probably want to buy it soon or later. I guess Emily Temple Cute, Jane Marple and MILK are the most famous ones. I used to love Syrup's stuff, but I guess they're doing cult party now...
Taobao has a lot of cool stores too! I can list some at another time, I'm a little busy right now.

...jarring to see myself posted on /cgl/ when I'm half asleep.

OP, otome is more about the "feel" of the clothing, rather than set rules. Think whimsical, fairy tale, doll-like. The word "otome" literally means "young maiden", and that really is what you're going for. It's less matchy than lolita - prints and colors sometimes don't go perfectly and might even clash a bit - you keep things looking nice by paying attention to proportion and how textures look with each other, rather than simply just color. It's something you gradually learn to recognize and will come second-nature eventually.
Otome and lolita CAN cross over, they are not mutually exclusive. I would classify >>6741610 as both.

Or if you're pretty small and androgynous, kodona would like nice too.

I kindly disagree, because otome often has that sort thing going on - I think it gives it that whimsical, slightly magical feeling to it.

Pic related shows how ETC utilizes different patterns and prints in single coordinates.
It's about how you manage the proportions and balance of the different pieces.
However, it may not be your cup of tea, and that's ok!

The black to bright color ratio is off. It'd be better with the stripes being lower contrast, like black and charcoal grey, and also with the colors swapped on the socks. The fur would be more balanced against a heavier textured fabric like a tweed or a knit.

No, I actually like clashing prints, but only if it's done well.
You have socks in one pink color, then fur collar in another pink. Then you have a dress with a heavy print, next to a shirt with heavy stripes over socks with a heavy lace up pattern. It's just contrast on contrast.

Look at the first coord in your picture. You have a shirt with a strong stripe print, then a more muted print on the skirt. The further down on the body (not next to the other patterns) you have strong stripes on the ankle socks. See the difference?

I do certainly see what you're trying to say.
But do remember that photos don't always capture different fabrics correctly, so colors may not always be accurate - the tippet and the socks are the same color in real life.
I disagree that the socks have a heavy pattern (and I'd find the shirt debatable - stripes are a very simple pattern imo), but what would you suggest instead?
I think it would be easier for me to see where you think it could be improved if you provided concrete examples of what would work better.

I hope I'm not coming across as obstinate, but I do think more concrete ideas for improvement work better!

You know, I'm not sure...
but "otome" can be written two ways: 乙女 or 少女, both of which can also be pronounced shoujo (a word you may have heard before, e.g. shoujo manga), which means the same thing overall, but "otome" has a connotation of purity or naivity (particularly when written the first way), whereas shoujo is more of a neutral word.
That being said, the opposite of shoujo is shounen 少年, but it doesn't particularly have any of the that connotation so...

My wardrobe is mainly otome. My boyfriend loves the way I dress, he knows I love Emily and would spoil me sometimes. He's a programmer, wears shirts and pants like everyone else. He says he likes seeing how elegant I look, and feels proud whenever people compliment me.

Otome is just a fashion at the end of the day. There's nothing more charming than a smart man who can teach me things, and love me for something else other than the way I dress.

One tip is to work with colors that are in the dress already, like you do in lolita, but try out different patterns on the tights/top. As long as you think it looks good. You don't need to do the clashing prints either, it's just a matter of taste if you like it or not.

Jane Marple does tend to skew higher than ETC. I am not sure, but suspect, that JM is priced higher than ETC to begin with, and maybe ETC is slightly more lolita friendly so it bleeds more into the lolita market when it comes to secondhand. But yeah, the demand and the source is not as much a constant as with lolita. You will just have to scour auctions & Closet Child etc. and maybe try to make a WTB on egl_comm_sales just in case?

Depending on what you want done with it, I would suggest finding a digital artist who can duplicate the print for you and then have it printed with an on-demand fabric printing service. The biscuits have the brand's name printed on them but you could easily change that if you had someone reproducing the print for you. (Emily Temple Moot has a nice ring to it, by the way.)
Now if only you knew an artist who had the print on-hand who could do this for you~

Now it's just a matter of gettin me some hats. All of the hats, right now. Where do you seagulls buy your hats? I want things that'll work with otome/mori-style stuff. Do you just go to your local hat store, or are there any good online shops where you can buy hats that don't cost a fortune?

>> No.6748405

>>6748400
Interested in this too, but I buy mostly from typical mall stores- forever 21, urban outfitters, h&m has some decent full hats usually. Then I just decorate them myself with brooches and pins.

If you prefer softer stuff like berets and knit hats, ebay and taobao has a lot of great options. I'm personally more into structured hats, though.

I recommend goorin. If you have a local store all the better, but they are online at goorin.com I used to work for them (still do some contract work for them), and can vouch for excellent customer service and pleasant shopping experience. Their lower end hats a pretty good, I really love their heritage collection the best though it isn't cheap, but good hats are usually worth the extra cash. Maybe thrifting might be a good option? I'm gonna check my local thrift shops tomorrow, but I'm afraid it'll be mostly ratty hats that are too old/ugly to be delightfully vintage.

If you thrift from a shop that brands itself as a "vintage shop" rather than somewhere like Goodwill or Value Village, you might have better luck.

It's a bit far away for me, but I was going to buy some new shoes so I'll just save a bit more and get a hat as well. I take the ferry over as I don't drive in downtown unless I'm at a con or an event where I need to drive.

I'm a bit excited as I have a hard time buying hats online. So it will be great to get a full sized hat in person.

Still so very excited, I have the hardest time with finishing my coordinations for otome as I feel there's always something "missing" at the top. And I only have one vintage hat. So being able to have a hat shop nearby is a dream come true.
