Had a really great time and met up with a lot of cool folks and snagged a bunch of photo ops. At the risk of sounding extremely hyperbolic, there was like a 1:4 Cosplayer to "Regular" attendee ratio, which was an awesome turnout.

Understand that it is difficult to explain in a coherent way because I am not a homestuck fan and was taken to it by my homestuck fan *friend*. So everything you are about to hear comes from the perspective of someone who has no idea what the fuck is going on

Basically, they had cosplayers dressed up as all the characters from the series, and the audience got to ask each individual one a question. Very few of the cosplayers actually knew their character, and fewer still were good at improv. So it ended up being some incestuous injoke crap for the entire thing. Not that I *know* their characters, that was just what my friend told me

Also, I had to spend this entire time sitting next to an autistic awkward fuck who kept trying to explain Homestuck to me, so that was weird

To wrap things up, they started asking the audience homestuck trivia for prizes. This, of course, all went over my head, but the one golden moment that made that entire godawful time worth it was had with these two

There were these absolutely adorable madoka magica cosplayers. These girls couldn't have been over 15 years old, I swear. Anyway, the Homura? She got one of the hardest questions right after the entire rest of the audience couldn't get it. She literally leaped out of her seat in joy when she got it right and was handed the prize, and I was right next to her to see it all

If HNNNG could provide electrical power, she could supply the city of Seattle for the next 30 years

The Con was amazing.

Pros:
1. First con in 6 years, had a blast even if I didn't get to make a costume.
2. Masquerade was my favorite event, danced with tons of people
3. Met tons of new people and saw a lot of people I knew but didn't think I'd see

Cons:
1. Next time I'll go with friends, friend I was supposed to ditched me.
2. Oh my god I need to get a Hotel, I was staying with a friend and taking the ferry back and forth sucked.
3. The masquearade was great but the person that I thought there was a mutual attraction with ended up being put off by what I can only assume is our age difference (but it was 7 years so I can see her reasoning)
4. I need to watch more anime, I haven't been keeping up with any anime so I didn't know what anyone was. And I found out what homestuck is

The swimsuit panel was a tragic disappointment. He dropped the ball pretty bad. None of the files were pre-checked so he didn't have codecs to play half the girls songs. Half of the time in the room was spent listening to them trying to figure out how to get shit working. The other half was microphones with the bass at max and the treble at min. It was like listening to the fucking adults in charlie brown. Then they fucked with it halfway through one girls' song and cut her off completely. It was bad. The girls were bored, the judges were bored, the audience was bored, and by spending so much time fucking with shit they only got about halfway through the panel before they ran out of time. I think it's about time Jacob hands the panel off to people who could run it better. He's a great guy but he clearly needs more professional help running such a highly anticipated panel.

I felt the same way. I'm a huge figure collector and also have a big collection of manga and yet pretty much all I bought was some prints from the Artist Alley. The figure selection was pathetic this year and a lot of it was overpriced junk. I was really disappointed by the lack of anything worthwhile. It was also even more cluttered than usual so in the places that did sell figures, seeing all they had to offer was a huge hassle.

Actually this was a problem with AV. And Jacob's panel wasn't the only one suffering- a lot were. AV had the wrong style of set up for the panel Jacob needed and on top of that didn't sound check half their shit.

Also to be an AV volunteer you have to take care of 3/4 of the con.... which no good, sane AV tech will do. So they get shitty people who want the con on their resume.

Pro:
- I haven't been in a con for two years, this was nice
-Ate a bunch of yummy food
-I was able to magically have 200 (out of 400 bucks) on Sunday to buy an alpaca and lots of AA art
- I finally got to see "Where Fanfic goes to hell" panel and it was amazing

Con:
-That skit contest was shit
-They closed the AA and exhibitors hall way to early
- I went to the most panels on Friday, Saturday lacked some variety panel wise.

Also adorable kyuubei was adorable

While a lot of it WAS overpriced, There were a couple little thing that were harder to find at fair enough prices.
Bandai's booth had this two year old GaoGaiGar at standard price+tax, and since the middleman was cut, all the money goes back to them anyway.
Also managed to get these two Nichijous at a decent price. (Having said that, they were also at another booth for $15 more a piece)

It really does help to have a smartphone constantly check everything for you. One booth in the back was selling sleeves at an okay $10/2 for $15, but by the time I got over there, someone apparently bought out the entire lot on Saturday afternoon.

I attended Spaceship, and I am inclined to agree. But zapp, it wasn't you! Fuck, you made it hilarious!

It's always a gamble when you pull people up from the audience. They've either got it or they don't, and I guarantee that you and your crew have it! I especially loved the Claptrap - his voice was spot. ON. I lost it when he was like, "Follow me, stranger!"

You brought Spaceship back from the edge of the cliff so many times, you don't even know.

A bit of suggestion, though. . .

I noticed you guys were fumbling around with a lot of the papers up there (I imagine they were your scripts). Next time, maybe you could staple and sticky-note them into separate piles that say (just examples), "Plot," "Random Person 1/2/3/4/etc."

Just so that way you guys don't lose your place and the crowd doesn't get pissy that you ask the same question again.

But seriously, zapp. I go to Sakuracon and I plan everything around YOUR panels. I love you guys to pieces.

That video was hilarious, too. The Waifu bit cinched it for me. I laughed SO hard.

LOLLL I was the 'Green haired bitch' (Gumi) at Loveline.

>> No.6738440

>>6738285
So yeah. It's weird. Ace, Sheldon, Harley, and Beardy. It seems as though people either love them or hate them. Everything I hear is one or the other. I don't quite understand. I will admit though, Beardy is probably my favourite. While he can get a little excited, he's extremely fucking nice, always shows up super early, and brought an entire case of energy drinks for me incase I needed them (of which I did need many). He gets up a lot, yeah, but he listens when we tell him he's getting a bit TOO excited.

But yes. Spaceship of Love didn't go quite as well as I had planned. I wouldn't call it a failure, but it DEFINITELY wasn't as good as last year. A lot of my friends wanted to have bigger parts in it, and I was okay with trying that. After all, it's not MY show. Everyone involved does a lot of stuff, and honestly, I don't deserve all of the credit. Thus, I tried to incorporate everyone. As is obviously seen, that did not work. We learned a lot from this year, and it'll help us grow far more than ever.

We won't be doing so many switches and skins in following years. We will be focused more on just Zapp asking questions. This will help keep the pace and energy up, and the confusion down. We're also going to streamline the rules and panel introduction so to not waste time there. I still want to involve other crew, as they deserve it, but this'll be done more like the early Vegeta question (ie. "Vegeta has taken your seat. How're you gonna get him out?" or "Go do pushups against him).

While I don't particularly mind people getting up and doing something silly (like Beardy getting up and doing something quick), so long as it doesn't get out of hand, I DO NOT want people rushing the stage and just taking a spot. That is NOT cool, and it WILL NOT be happening again.

>> No.6738442

In previous years, we had two people, whom this year were Reimu and Moxxi, getting contestants. We tried having more people getting contestants, to speed up the process a bit, but it ended up backfiring on us and making confusion. We will be reverting back to just having Reimu and Moxxi doing it, since they had really good communication in previous years, despite the pauses required with doing so. However, during those pauses, I will be reading things put in the donation / tip boxes next year, because there were some pretty hilarious things (which I will be posting on the facebook page later).

Other than that, well... The one thing that really threw me off and really upset me this year, is that there was a considerable amount of drama pushed onto us. I'm not going to name names, point fingers, or anything of the sort, but I've heard reports from a few people that there are a couple of people whom have been -quite- malicious towards us, and have acted very poorly to us behind our backs. The entire reason I started Spaceship of Love was for two reasons. One: I wanted to make people, and two: I wanted to create a panel where every day con goers could get up on stage infront of a crowd and showcase themselves, giving themselves a chance to be hilarious infront of a group of people. I'm not trying to stroke my own ego, I'm not trying to become con famous, and I'm not doing any of this for my own personal gain -- I'm doing this for the fun and enjoyment of EVERYBODY. I don't care if people don't like my panel, I don't care if they don't like me or think I'm a huge douche, whatever. I DO get upset by people being two-faced and cruel about something that's purely about comedy and making people feel good. That's just not cool. :/

Last year I waited in line for over an hour before the Session even started, and then another hour during the signing itself.

I didn't even MOVE. A bunch of people who had special Advance Tickets or something all showed up 5 minutes before the Guest and skipped the line entirely. However it was really really nice, the staff was awesome and very kind to us and the sushi restaurant attached to it was amazing. definitely plan on staying there next year as well!

Lesson learned:

Don't go to voice actor panels. Tried to drag my friend away from one, the Sheh, Swasey, and Vic one, but she wouldn't listen to me.

We were treated to people constantly asking the "how do i become supah famouse voice acterz?" One girl was bragging about how she was an actor for AHNIMAE (no shit, she said it like that) and how she was up-and-coming.

Another was asking how to get her crap published (but not anime/manga. It was a book she wanted turned into a screen write), and how she got 30% of her take on her Epubs, and 10% on her physical published shit.

I wanted to laugh at both of them, and I'm not a vindictive person, but fuck, they were both so stupid.

I learned this at Kumoricon two years ago. At a David Vincent panel, one of the questions from an obese female teenager was: "WERE YOU LELOUCHE?"

...Five seconds of silence. "Uh no" he replied, "but I was Li Xingke in Code-"

"WHO WAS THAT?!?" the Hambeast interrupted in the most obnoxious tone.

And in the most polite and patient way possible, he went on to describe the character for a few seconds and move on. But every five minutes throughout this whole panel, a group of fangirls near the front would start giggling, and I recall there was at least three questions about fan pairings or requests to say romantic things to them/fictional characters in one of his voices, and he had to oblige.

The voice actors themselves are always nice and (usually) humble folks, but the people they unintentionally bring out into public are quite horrifying.

Not the same anon, but.

Basically the guy with the demo reel went on a super long spiel about how he wanted to be an anime voice actor and he made a demo reel and he was looking to send it into companies.

Kind of a legit question! Stephanie makes a comeback and asks, "What's your gear?"

Boy replies with, "Uh, what?"

Sheh, "What's your gear? What do you use?"

"Oh. . . A stupid plugin mike. Sometimes the band at my school lets me use a Snowball mike. Oh, I don't have a room -- my room IS the basement. And I just shove tissues around the mike."

(At which point I turned to my friend and muttered, "yeah, jizz tissues.")

You could tell Stephanie -- at that point -- was super frustrated, and was telling the guy, long story short, practice, buy yourself a nice, expensive mike, and the guy kept looping back to he already HAD a demo reel and didn't want to change it.

Publisher girl was more interesting. Mike dude just didn't want to shell out the cash for a good mike. If any other anon wants to chime in, feel free. I wasn't paying attention to ALL of it, because at that point, net on my phone was much more interesting.

Publisher girl.

She walked up and asks a super long, very wordy question about how she is a sci-fi/fantasy/steampunk/sparklesparklei'm so fucking awesome writer. She says she already has her work published online through an EPub company, and a physical copy, though they haven't got much exposure.

She launches into how she's been writing for x-years and just goes on about how her shit is so good. Really. I saw Sheh give Swasey a look like, "Really?"

Publisher girl eventually wraps up by saying how can she send in a screenwrite (whatever the fuck it is) to companies to get it pitched.

Sheh comes back and asks her, "You mean anime? Like Funimation-esque companies?"

"No, I don't want it to be an anime. I just want to know how to pitch it to companies, and who WILL accept it so I can pitch it."

(At this point, I openly stare at this girl, because why the fuck are you asking a VA who only really knows the VA industry something better suited for writers?)

Sheh starts saying she should attend writing conventions and they have classes on how to pitch a product to people. Publisher girl says she's been to those and she needs more help.

Sheh says to google some leads, because most companies are pretty closed to new material, and the ones she's into only want anime.

Publisher girl launches into another dialogue about yeah, the market is really closed right now, everybody's paycheck is getting cut. Especially the writer's. I only make 30% off of my Epubs, 10% off of the book version. But I'm not making a lot of money.

Swasey was basically quiet for the entire time because they were both so out of their zone. We left shortly after Publisher Girl because it was just so *painful.*

Poor VA's. I'm slow to piss off, but I honestly wanted to stomp up, grab the mic, and smack them both over the head with it. The VAs were super cool about it, though. . . They just had to suffer.

I'm absolutely exhausted from Sakuracon.

Also, Sakuracon needs to keep their dealer hall map updated on their site. We literally had no idea that our booth was right NEXT to Arda. If they had actually taken the time, we could have actually moved our booth or they could have moved there. It was a whole bundle of awkward when we went to do setup and found them right next to us. But we found a way to separate the booths so people didn't get confused.

On the upside, made it 100X easier for customers to shop. I think it played to both our advantages because our prices are similar so customers could just compare right next to each other, not to mention arda has stuff we don't have anyway(LIke odango buns) So if somebody wanted something like Clip in bangs, I could just show them arda's.

My coworker estimated our sells went up about 30% from last year.

Although, freaking Ramy(The one banned from multiple artist alleys) They had the damn front and center booths at the dealers hall. There booth literally looked like an over sized artist alley table.

Also found out that the toyslogic guy is an old school jojo fan. Maybe not a hardcore fan like a lot of the younger ones, but still fun chatting Jojo with him. I just wish his business wasn't all the way up in Concord, great for the Norcal people, bit to far for me.

Brought my husband a bottle of Flying Monkey Ale from the NYC deli(Apparently left over from ECCC stock since it's a 2013 exclusive)

Bought myself a flying squirrel Kigurumi, a few Persona arena keychains, and a fantasy novel from the B&N across from my hotel.

Also I stayed at the Roosevelt. Nice hotel, our room was pretty large(King bed with a fold out couch) Jacuzzi bathtub(which is nice after working on your feet all day) and only about a block from the con hotel.

Also since their restaurant shut down, they had free continental breakfast for everybody until 9:30.

Also food wise, I recommend hitting up Dragonfish during their happy hour(9 or 9:30 to closing)

Prices are really reasonable for Sushi. We averaged about 12-13 a person since we ordered plates for everybody to share, along with individual plates, including alcoholic drinks(I had the Dragonfish Lemongrass collins, pretty good). Plenty tasted pretty good, Miso soup was weak though. They did run out of some things, like Sunday night they were actually out of desserts. They did bring us an extra order of their curry fries and didn't charge one of our people for a second lager. So it's forgivable. Also side note, if you need change, you may have to go to the hotel. While we're on the topic of food, I had the fortune of being led around by my friend who lives in Seattle and was able to go to Shiro's and a place called Kaname Izakaya which was actually pretty close in atmosphere to one. Prices are amazing compared to NYC's Japanese food. Definitely returning to Sakura-con next year.

TBH I don't actually live in Seattle (I live about 2 hours away) and I haven't really had a chance to try out much of the food in the area.

Haven't had a chance yet. Sadly since I'm up from socal for working the con, I don't have a rental car(boss don't pay for it) Working a con booth for 8 hours can be pretty damn draining, but worth it for the people you meet and make happy. I also tried Blue C Sushi during ECCC and found it rather underwhelming for their standard cost(haven't tried their happy hour yet) I'm kind of spoiled on Kula down here in SoCal. They're a $2 flat rate a plate revolving sushi joint and the quality was probably just as nice as Blue C or better. Of the two Sushi places right by the convention center, I'll take Dragonfish.

Also the mall that's right by the con has a few places to eat on the 4th floor. They've got a good ol' Johnny Rockets, and their Chowder place isn't bad either. The concierge desk has a booklet of coupons, so take advantage of those any time you hit the mall for food.
There's also a little cupcake stand in their. Pricy, but surprisingly good gluten free cupcakes. I don't even really eat Gluten free foods and the one I tried was good. Though a bit to much frosting on my snicker doodle cupcake

Uhh what? He does so many roles it's not even believable sometimes. As for major roles, he did the main male love interest in Ouran Host Club which probably doubled his popularity. He also did Dampierre in SoulCalibur, Junpei in Persona 3, etc.. He fucking gets around. He's probably done something in nearly every major anime these days and when he isn't, he's singing the theme song or something. I'm a big fan of Vic, ever since I heard him as Junpei and Dampierre. He has plenty of range (mother fucking Broly of all things) and is quite the character himself. It's enjoyable to see him in panels and even during the autograph sessions since he gets everyone excited, including the staff members. Sure he isn't perfect, but I don't expect him to be.

Yeah. It's a godsend at that price.

We actually lived on the chowder from the place at the mall for lunch every day. When you're stuck at a booth for $8, you sometimes just can't leave to go grab lunch. Thankfully my coworker's fiance and friend came with us to the con, so they did lunch runs.

Also really there's Pike Place market. There's also I believe a mexican chain near there called Qdoba. Decent Mexican food(More along the lines of Chipotle then real mexican food) But I had something from them called Mexican gumbo. Turned out to be basically their rice, covered in a large portion of their tortilla soup, topped with sour cream, cheese, and extra tortilla strips. It was pretty good and very filling for the price.

Also, I personally recommend flying southwest for flying to cons. My boss swears by them since they're one of the few that has two free checked bags. You can check a 16x18x18 cardboard box(So the medium sized ones from home depot). If it's under 50 pounds. It's free. My boss uses it all the time so we can save money on shipping stock to out of state cons.

Downside, any stuff I bring has to fit in a carry on suitcase and messenger bag. I feel bad when I look like a pack mule and having to stuff my suitcase to near bursting if I want to bring any costumes to con.

They're also super if you miss your flight. We missed our 6:00pm flight coming back last night to LAX(routed through Oakland) but had space on their 6:35pm that routed through San Jose. We only ended up about 30 minutes late to LAX but our ride wasn't getting there till later anyway.

I've also flown United. I thought the United flight was a tad more comfortable, but when you're flying, sometimes you just make due with what you got.

Yeah. It's work for me(Though I was a regular con attendant in socal since 2005) before I started working at my job. Now all the cons I'm going to are for work(outside of one or two I actually go for fun)

I personally really wish I could do ECCC just as an attendant. It really did look like it had stuff I'd enjoy and panels I would have liked to have gone to. But being stuck at the booth the whole time, you miss out on so much. On the upside, I get to meet a ton of people, and it's really rewarding when I just make somebody's day when I help them get their wig or help them with advice on costumes, or just geek out when I find somebody making a costume from a series I love.

Also making friends with the other vendors has it's perks. Finding out ABCToys4me was local saved some shipping for me from Las Vegas since they drove some of my boxes home in their truck and I just picked them up the next day. Not to mention cutting deals on stuff and sharing stories over dinner.

Sorry that we couldn't meet up, just like the other people who wanted shoots but didn't want to pay or couldn't, I told them to say hi or try and meet up because I would have snapped some photos in any case. It just wouldn't have been as in depth as a private shoot.

They have shit programming and continue to fuck over dealers and artists. I was one of the artists stuck in the parking garage fiasco this past year... Indeed. I went one year and was embarrassed by how terrible it was. I understand it takes time to develop a con into something huge (hell, Sakura Con started out as some shitty airport "Baka Con" with less than 200 attendees or something), but when I went I found it terribly dull and uninteresting. There was just so little to do that I didn't even see a point in going. Maybe in five years it will be worthwhile, but until now I rather just save up and get pumped for a single anime con a year rather than go to every one I can think of.
