Seems like the best place to ask, I'll go to another board if unwanted...

How do I give my friend a crash course in being a fursuit handler?

>> No.6734786

Tell them to be like the guides in Disney theme parks?

As in the person who makes sure you don't run into a wall? Put them in the mask and explain that this is what your field of vision is and that's why you need help.

If they aren't willing, sucks for you. I had a friend last weekend in a fursuit (not a full one, just a mask, and limbs) and had it not been for the fact that one of us had to stay at the AA table I would have walked around with her, making sure she didn't crash into anything. Doesn't help that she did get glomped at one point...

I'm taking a mascot style suit which has some pretty heavy vision impairment, so I'll need my friends to help me around the crowds.
Im going with a group... I'll cuddle up to my girlfriend for help.
I hope she wasn't glomped by another furry, its really looked down upon v.v

Thankfully no, the con was small-ish and a younger then usual crowd who probably didn't realize that there is a protocol with fursuits. My friend was totally fine with giving hugs, it was when she actually got /knocked down/ from someone entirely out of her field of vision (which was basically straight ahead) that it was out of line.

Please be aware that it's generally looked down upon to use emoticons here.

Your friend wants to be your handler? That's awesome! I knew I needed one when a friend of mine walked way too fast on the crossing street, and I got pushed side to side by jerks as they were walking the opposite way. Yelling at them to stop didn't help. It really scared me and my friend didn't notice the entire time.

That's a great tip if you or your friend don't mind trying this.

I cosplayed as Domo before, and I could only see what is front of me and closer to the ground. Can't see the sides or back without spinning around to see. My friends got to try on my cosplay for fun, but they were quickly aware how limited my vision was. Throughout the con, my friends were very helpful in guiding me down tight pathways, pardoning for me (I still excused myself but I can't tell if people can hear me), and even carried my bag.

You friend will need to get that: you may get stopped for pictures multiple times, learn to talk for you (ie. you don't feel like taking pictures or in a rush to a panel? Your friend will let people understand when they ask), they will act as a pack mule at times to make it easier for you to move and pose for pictures, and is somewhat responsible for your safety. Not just as a guide but to make sure you are feeling fine and hydrated, so communication between you and your handler friend is very important. As a handler, you have to be perspective and be aware of your surroundings as well as the person's you are handling. If your handler has to go off for a bit, I don't recommend staying in costume the entire time - at least take off the head piece for safety.

... So yea, that's all I can think of. I hope your friend has patience, they must be pretty nice to willingly be a handler.
