I'd say it's because I have a hard time picking out who's who. Styling helps a lot in this case since people aren't going to look like the actors.

I thought it was cute with Henry and Emma but it took me a few seconds to register that the rest of the characters were there too since they look too casual.

I disagree. It counts. First off, the pink tones do not fit her skin color- bad wig and costume choice. The shirt is poorly fitted- look at how it's riding up one side of her body. The fabric choice on the skirt and arm pieces isn't the best either- it looks shiny and a little like duct tape. She has no eyebrows, which could be fixed with pencil, but was not. Her posing and posture is very poor, too, so she obviously did not put in effort understanding her body or presence for photos.

It's not the worst but it's certainly mediocre. I agree that we shouldn't hate just because someone's fat, but I think larger people do have a harder time cosplaying. Anime characters are not typically fat, so you're going to have a harder time pulling off the right look. You start in a disadvantage, you need to work even harder to make up for it.

Imo it's not really elitist when the average person can do better. If you want to start cosplaying, just sew clean and have attention to detail. The simpler the costume, the more detail and accuracy needs to go in. I always await the day I'll get posted on cgl because I'm a bit bigger than average, but then I realise I'm also a pretty decent cosplay, pay attention to detail, get nice wigs, do nice makeup, and I've won the top prize at my local convention before, so maybe I shouldn't doubt myself so much.
