Can we discuss our weeaboo rage moments?

>See that my school is hosting a conference on "international influences in art"
>get excited about either going or presenting something
>realize it happened a week ago, I missed the whole thing
>derp from class shows up
>OH ANON I DID A PRESENTATION FOR THAT ON JAPANESE COMICS BOOKS
>you mean manga?
>...what?
>you talked about Astro Boy, and the influence of American soldiers and their comics on the medium in WWII, right? And how American cartoons, especially Popeye, are often referenced by older artists? And how American artists are now often using manga-style art?
>I don't know about any of that stuff...
>THE FUCK DID YOU TALK ABOUT THEN
>oh, you know... American and Japanese comics books and stuff.

This stupid motherfucker is now the face of "Japanese comic books" to my entire English department.

He won't go to anime conventions.
He watches some anime like if they are on adult swim. Nothing else. Says he is the biggest anime fan ever.
Plays lots of video games, mostly TF2
Has never picked up a comic book in his life.
Please for the life of god explain to me why this child goes to comic conventions.
He also thinks it is a good idea to not buy comic con tickets until the week before, and is freaking out at his girlfriend because she would rather go to her cousin's wedding then fucking comic con and she has even less interest in anything there then he does.

The only thing remotely close to everything else in this thread is when I was in my Drawing for Sequa class. The professor for that class has worked in the industry, and created lots of characters for DC including Stephanie Brown's run as Spoiler.

So we all have to do realistic and then american comic style drawings for this class, really informative and interesting. This one girl refused to draw anything but Anime and kept getting F's on her assignments because of it. One day she publicly goes up to the professor and calls him a racist anda biggot because he wont let her use a superior style. She goes on for a few minutes before the professor tells her if she wants to be homeless and not get a job she can continue to use her style, but she would need to leave the class and never come back because he didn't want to teach a failure.

She never came back to that class. Thank god though she was terribly obnoxious.

From "special snowflakes" I assumed special ed, as in delinquents, learning disabilities, autism, etc., not gifted kids.

I went to a high school with separate courses for gifted kids - "enhanced" classes, vs. "academic" (higher tier regular kids) and "applied" (lower tier regular kids). I wouldn't really think of it as special snowflake stuff; they just gave us more challenging coursework so we wouldn't be bored. There were more geeks than the normal kids classes but not the horror story weaboo kind, generally. My circle of friends was probably considered weaboo-lite (J-rockfags mostly).

Fucking hate this. I had to do a mock portfolio interview with profs outside of our college for a class and my original prof said it's recommended to show progress work for comparison so the interviewer has a sense of your progression through the years (and specifially said anime is acceptable to show).
>interviewer asks if I drew anime alot
>I used to, rarely now if not for cosplay mockups (didn't mention the cosplay mockups part though).
>lectures me like I'm a child who draws anime all the time saying I won't get a job, only children draw anime etc.
>keep explaining that I understand that and DON'T draw anime anymore, it was for comparison
>still doesn't understand and keeps lecturing
>ignores the rest of my work for ONE anime related thing

Remember she was writing her own hentai series named Cybercats(She even apparently copyrighted it) where all the characters were mutants that could shift into animal forms that looked like Thundercats Though most of the characters were based of of either house cats or domestic dogs. One female(named Jellylorum), multiple male characters, all named after anime characters. Like Gojyo, Orphen, etc.... Oh and she said that the female character was a representation of herself. Tthe female character got raped a lot. She also said she'd draw the whole series herself so they "couldn't make weird changes like the hair and eye color"

Pic related. Some of her "art" which was pretty much copied off anime screenshots or artbook stuff. She was seriously shocked when one day I was sketching something that wasn't being copied off something and literally asked me how I did it.

Oh and I should mention she was already in her 30's when I meet her.

Most portfolio interviews for art schools won't want to see anime and will outright lose interest if you show them that. It's not "the one interviewer." It's a shitload of them; art profs won't see animu as showcasing any real skill unless it's immensely detailed and well-proportioned with a solid background, and isn't just an obvious stylistic ripoff. You just kind of have to accept that even one piece like that can sink your whole interview. At least it was just a mock one.

But then, one of the reviewers saw one of my unused anime-looking pieces lying around (er, we had to set up a display of pieces to be judged, I had a stack of extra shit with me) he asked to see more and then gave me a lecture about how art schools don't hate anime, they just don't like generic shit or fanart. Gifted doesnt mean smart or that you worked hard. I was in a gifted program too and actually paid attention to why they have it. If the program is good it isnt bullshit as it should be a change in teaching style to go beyond the normal stuff to keep the kids engaged. It isnt the same as AP because you are tested on the stuff on AP, where as enhancement here is just extra info or more opportunities to shine.

Some people are like super smart. Others just work really hard, and some just learn differently. Motivation seems to be a big difference, 98% of the people I know from the program went to Uni afterwards, and went to grad to do the diploma thing, where as most of the other kids didnt bother with that shit and not even close to that amount went off to more schooling afterwards.

It does attract the nerds and the social retards though.

If she's legit, sounds like the way people with Disassociative Identity Disorder act. On Tumblr they call themselves "multiples" and talk about how their "headmates" interact with each other. I think whichever character the person takes on while speaking at a given moment is "fronting" or something? I ended up in that weird branch of Tumblr one night and wasn't sure how to feel about it. They consider trying to force a person with this disorder to consolidate their "headmates" into one single personality via therapy to be something like what happened to Nina in FMA: putting people in a blender and making them into some kind of monster. The idea of it horrifies them.

I'm sure some of these people aren't legit but the person you're talking about sounds like they're really far gone, so it's a possibility.

I don't have DID but from everything I know about the disorder that sounds like total bullshit. The base personality is only very rarely aware of other personalities (until their psychologist tells them). They disassociate when the other personalities take over, hence the name. So someone able to "interact" with a personality in their head is more likely suffering from maladaptive day dreaming or some sort of hallucination.

In my opinion, unless you actually have a diagnosis from a professional, then you can not say you have a disorder.

Sorry about my rant but this is just one of my buttons. Being a person with Autism/Aspergers, it just really pisses me off seeing all these idiots trying to fake a disorder just so that they can feel accepted somewhere. He's dumped on things that are actually GOOD several times for the stupidest reasons. (See his comments on Miyazaki) I think that's the thing that gets me the most. He acts like he's this elite nerd that knows all there is to know, but he's wrong half the time and he has such overwhelmingly shit taste.

He's really condescending into the bargain and talks to me about these things like I'm half-retarded or a child. I suspect he would do stuff like that even if I revealed that I also watch "anymee" and read "mainjah".

>>6725734
He really tests my patience and my boss finds this hilarious. I'll be trying to ring another customer out and he's standing there telling me all about CLAMP but if I ever read any of their works, I should avoid a series called "X slash 1999" because it "might be too much for me".

At times like that, I fantasize about going off on this long winded rant, but in reality I would probably just tell him that everything he knows is wrong and walk away.

>>6726019
He probably did that because all the main characters are named after famous detectives.

I raged so hard at that show you have no idea. Not just as an anime fan, but because I enjoy stories about 3 out of the 4 detectives the main characters are named after.

You CAN be aware of your other personalities with DID, and that's part of your therapy. How much you feel they hinder your day to day life decides if you should actively get rid of them (that's if you don't mind them at all, some people live comfortably with it).

DID is a disorder stemming from abuse where you disconnect and disassociate with the situation and a new personality will form and take life that will be able to handle your situation. Sometimes more will be created for different forms the abuse winds up taking.

Now, the whole 'multiples' thing on Tumblr... half those shits are full of it. From my knowledge you cannot have the personality of an existing character, you cannot interact with your personality on a personal/mental level. People who are aware will usually set up a writing system to keep up with what all of them have been doing. You are not aware when the other personality is 'fronting', also. Because it's DISSOCIATIVE Identity Disorder. According to my friend who suffered from it, his mind would rebuild the setting around him and he'd continue doing whatever it was he was doing in his mind while the other personality took over until he came back in control.

That and like I said, the personalities are created from abuse/to help you cope with certain things, so you can't really just wake up like 'I think Castiel from SPN moved in! Cool' BECAUSE THAT'S NOT HOW IT WORKS.

Sage for no real contribution.

http://www.csupomona.edu/~pronunciation/sounds/japanese/female/kyoko.wav (omit the -ko)

Basically where non-Japanese get in trouble is trying too hard to mimic Japanese intonation and it just sounds ridiculous. Use this: http://www.kanachart.com/

You don't say To-SHEE-yah, It's more like "Tosh'ya".

Kyo is "K'yo", one syllable and with no I sound.

Kaoru is as above but in a less Japanese yet still correct way, the K is a bit sharper and faster than the C in "cow", and don't forget the A sound before the O.

Shinya, avoid saying "sheen", this happens when over pronouncing the Japanese I sound. Cut the I sound in half instead and don't drag the last A out so much. Think Shi-nya instead of Shi-n-ya when you're saying it to yourself.

Die is easy, pronounced the same as Dai basically (which is why that's his stage name iirc), as for Daisuke, just start with Die and add "-skeh" because the U is silent.

I laugh in the face of people who claim to have DID, because it's extremely, extremely rare--rare enough that if you got diagnosed by a real doctor, they'd be flying you to conferences in New York to have the whole profession talking to you about it.

Secondly, there's been a serious pushback against the diagnosis at all. A lot of the early work was based on Freudian ideas of the psyche (which are often just wrong). One of the pioneering cases, known as "Sibyl" (there's a book) has come under fire for being conducted unprofessional, for using hypnosis/regression to convince and implant memories, and for being, in general, crap.

People with DID often had abusive childhoods--abusive like gang raped at age 3 and made to eat shit and kept under a bed to puke and shit on themselves for days. Seriously fucked-up stuff. Someone who's been through "normal" abuse isn't going to develop this.

More often, DID is mistaken for a lot of emotional disorders, where the person has such uncontrollable emotional changes they feel like different people. Some people with serious delusional disorders may claim they have DID, because they can feel their "souls" moving or whatever, but they're just the same as the people who hear ghosts in the walls or think aliens can read their minds.

DID is bullshit, basically, and either a lonely, slightly disturbed person looking for attention or a profoundly disturbed person being honest about their delusions/experiences, but still doesn't have DID.

Wiki isn't the greatest source, but they support pretty much everything I just said, with linked studies/publications:

" Diagnosis is often difficult as there is considerable comorbidity with other mental disorders. Malingering should be considered if there is possible financial or forensic gain, as well as factitious disorder if help-seeking behavior is prominent."

"DID is one of the most controversial psychiatric disorders with no clear consensus regarding its diagnosis or treatment...No systematic, empirically-supported definition of "dissociation" exists."

"Dissociative disorders including DID have been attributed to disruptions in memory caused by trauma and other forms of stress, but research on this hypothesis has been characterized by poor methodology. So far, scientific studies, usually focusing on memory, have been few and the results have been inconclusive"

" The unusual number of diagnoses after 1980, clustered around a small number of clinicians and the suggestibility characteristic of those with DID, support the hypothesis that DID is therapist-induced."

DEG are really big on the metalcore and deathcore sound now.

The problem is, their current US record label has pretty much stopped pushing them and most of the big metal blogs won't even touch them because that particular sound has fallen out of favor.

It also doesn't help that they go out of their way to be unavailable to US music media to a hostile degree. How do you expect to mount a tour if you're not making an effort to reach out?

They've tried to break into the US market since 2006 and every effort has fallen flat, mostly because their promotional efforts have been really scattered.

Their only hope at this point is to get signed by a US label that specializes in extreme metal, like Metal Blade, Century Media or Relapse Records, who have signed other Japanese bands before. Now, a polite sage

While that bitch did act like a spoiled obnoxious brat in front of the class, the professor was also rude and inappropriate as fuck for calling her a failure. Professors should encourage their students, not fall to their level and bash them out of the whole class. I hate how you can completely rip off a generic American comic style from any author you want and fuck up the technicalities of your artwork yet still be more appreciated than someone who draws with a manga-influenced style and actually pays attention to the realistic parts of the artwork (anatomy, proportions, perspective, colors etc.).

Said.

Drawing for Sequa is an entry level class were you have to learn the basics of the industry. After that, you are allowed to explore into whatever given style you want, however this class is SPECIFICALLY about learning to draw for American comics and learning the basics of proportion, realism and the like in order to better stylize it.

There are a few really great people in my year who draw in a more manga influenced style and don't get crapped on because their stuff is legitimately great and they know the basics of anatomy and proportion and can therefore stylize it accordingly.

Also generally as long as Manga isn't the only thing you draw, the professors don't mind. All the ones I've taken actually really like manga/anime but when it comes to students who will only draw that and are adamant about becoming a manga artist in Japan is when they whip out the tough love.
