I'm not a cosplayer, I'm a lolita. I have no interest in cosplay, I don't care for fandoms, hell, I don't even care for anime. I just like fashion. So they held the event outside impact Comics. (The girl actually wanted me to wear Lolita, and I’m glad I didn’t, I don’t want to be associated with them) You know its cool, takes me almost an hour to drive in but you know we’re friends and my boyfriend wanted to go out for lunch so we went in. It wasn’t what I expected it to be. They had Beta males shaking cans for the cancer council, standing in a small group not really doing anything other than shake the cans at passers-by, but you know whatever, if they want to do a shit job fundraising go ahead. So I stood around waiting, for maybe a half hour, waiting to shave smiles head because 'She wanted to wait for the TV crew' (And by that there were two guys with DSLRs and one was my friends boyfriend) so in the mean time they got me to shave someone elses head. I'm like okay cool, whatever, its for charity so why not? They made me shave their hair in the sun. I don't know how many of you know much about cutting hair, but you don't do it in direct sunlight, the light makes the hair look different, thinner, and cause I was shaving heads it was difficult to see if it was even. So I did the best I could, and said I was done. Like I said doing it in direct sun was a bad Idea. I didn’t see how patchy it was until the girl moved into the shade, but she was going over it with a razor so I don’t think she minded.
Next guy wanted me just to give him a number 2. Did a decent job, didn’t take much off. He was alright, sat still, held the shears for me. Part 1

Then there was the girl waiting for the camera crew. Smiles. I’d never met her before, but she has a youtube channel and is apparently pretty big in the Aus cosplay community, but you know whatever. After I ran over to the boyfriend (who by the way was an angle the whole day) and rubbed half a bottle of hand sanatizer, and then I did something I usually try to avoid. I cried. I have a panic disorder and sometimes the weirdest things freak me out. Seeing all those pimples just made me feel ill. And I cried, and not once did any of those people say anything. I ended up running off to the bathroom for five minutes, and my boyfriend had to send a lady in to get me. But I calmed down a little before I got to shave my friend. Now, shes a good friend, shes nice, and she laughs at my jokes. She was the only real reason I was there. And she was good, she sat still, she got an even shave, and she seemed fairly happy with everything.

The bit that got to me however was that I was volunteering to be there, I took the day off work and not one person thanked me. I wasn't even acknowledged, not even my friend thanked me. Now I might be being a bit harsh but they treated me pretty shit. part 2.

Syd cosplayer here. I dont get the big hoohah with Krisez here. There are several people (other than Beethy or Fiathriel) who also produce much better photos than him. Martin, Gordon, Noel, Isaac and Kusanagi.

KrisEz has a bigger presence in the cosplay community than the other people because he actually cares, makes time for the cosplayers and puts effort into creating what the cosplayer wants rather than just doing what they think looks good.
I've shot with tonnes of sydney photographers and KrisEz was the only one who ever asked if there was a specific piece of art I wanted to replicate or what suited the character etc etc Everyone else just went with whatever they watned to do.

I'm cosplaying for the first time this year.

I really want to get into a community and have some fun with like-minded tossers, but I must say that from what I've read in a few threads that you guys make that a little hard. Or maybe not hard as much as 'elitist.' You have your little circles and all you ever do is whine about each other like who slept with who, or who broke what rules. What I'm trying to say here is you do not appear to welcoming as a whole. I would like to be proven wrong here.

I consider myself relatively new to the cosplay scene, starting in 2011 with only one con and costume. I went with a friend who hadn't cosplayed before either so we had no idea what to expect.

And it was one of the best days of my life. I met so many wonderful people who were like minded and really easy to talk to. I met my boyfriend at a convention.

I never saw any of this drama or even knew it existed. And I still haven't experienced any to this day. Only the very odd tiff on Facebook and 80% of the drama seems to come from CGL.

I've had too much fun and met too many good people to let someone think that is a drama shit-storm.

I have only been to one con before (Manifest in Melbourne last year) and I really enjoyed it. My friends and I are cosplaying for our first times for this year's manifest. We will be doing a group cosplay and I am looking forward to it. I also started lurking /cgl/ to pick up some pointers, but it wasn't exactly what I expected. I am glad to hear that you all enjoy what you do and that most of the drama is a non-issue. Either way, I'll still be going to the con with my friends.

Group cosplay with friends is always great to do at a con in my experience - that way even if the con is crap you can still have a laugh with your friends. XD Also you get more easily recognised in a group and it's a handy way to meet more con-goers who're into the same series as you. Though be warned that you get the crazies in just about every fandom at cons...

First there are the nutso weaboos. I don't mean the ones who use broken Japanese and ugu face everywhere but the ones that scream and tackle you if they like the character you're cosplaying and address you as such while trying to grope your ass.

Then there are the folks like Lily but these days she's more a source of entertainment... unless you're cosplaying a vaguely revealing character on stage and then she starts calling you slut because CLEARLY you chose that costume to woo the judges with your cleavage or legs than because you liked the character or, God forbid, WANTED to make the costume.

Generally people behave themselves but you can still end up with the not-so-good ones who scream, throw things (including themselves) and generally make a show of themselves. Chances are you'll see them before they see you.

Years and years ago I once got kidnapped by a landwhale and couldn't get away because she kept trying to brush my wig (felt like she was trying to tear my scalp off at the same time). Then she tried to get me to say things in a cute voice for her. When she turned around and asked if I could braid her nasty hair I ran for it.

Also, I don't know if he's still around but I used to see him all the time a couple years ago - there's some short round kid that always wears an Organisation XIII jacket and the same Roxas wig every year. He stalked my friends and during cosplay chess, not only did he harass my friend's sister by telling her stories about how his daddy liked to get drunk and chase him with scissors, but also tried to have a long conversation with me comparing my breast size to the character I was cosplaying. Luckily he got kicked off the board rather quickly.

That's pretty much the only bad experiences I've ever had though. All other years have been quite enjoyable. You do get your occasional perverts (I remember there being one at GoldNova last year), but security is normally pretty good at getting rid of them.

I heard that if you say beethy 3 times in the mirror 50 dollars disappears from your wallet whether it's with you or not.

Well, a lot of the decent superhero costumes you see are all generally commissions. Which is fine. A lot of those people actually do stuff, like go to children's hospitals or the like. They go to cons for fun as well. But they don't enter comps, or try to be a fame-whore with them.
They are also usually tight with certain businesses like King's Comics which is why they might get ask to come. None of them are really professionals (despite what some of them, usually females, put in their page description).

Lily is probably just butthurt because she isn't getting asked by people to turn up to their booths, or whatever. And she is jealous of anyone more attractive/thinner than her. She is cosplay queen after all, how dare they not bow to her will/get more attention than her.

I for one cannot wait to see the amazing photoshoot between beethy and yaz for bioshock.

I'm putting together a group team fortress cosplay together for manifest in august with my friends. pic is my glasses just bought, I'll be sniper with my friends as engine and spy. I'll be making a rifle from wood and pvc pipe, because that will be easy compared to finding the clothesy parts. I can't find a buttonless blue long-sleeved shirt with a collar at all, let alone the right hue. I have zero sewing/craft experience and I do not know how to make the vest, with the two tones and buttons and bullets and whatever. I need help here. What can I do?

You don't really need a long sleeved collared buttonless shirt, seriously it is buttonless in the reference because it would have been a pain for the game developers to make it a properly rendered business shirt, TF2 is designed to run smoothly and not have super realistic clothing. Just get a blue business shirt, look at other people's TF2 sniper cosplays, 95% of them are buttoned up shirts and they work because a collared long sleeve buttonless shirt in the real world looks ridiculous and exists in the form of a collared knitted jumper of some sort.
The vest doesn't need to be 110% accurate either. It's a TF2 cosplay, this shit is easy as pie. As soon as someone sees you with a gun, glasses, hat and in red or blue people will know you are a sniper from TF2. Just browse etsy, ebay and local clothes shops and 2nd hand shops until you find a vest you like. Bullets you can get on ebay and etsy just search bullet and you'll get 50 million results which exactly match what is on his vest, you could sew them on or glue them on or depending on the vest you find you might even have slots or a pocket to stick them out of. You could even get away with a shoulder strap covered in them which you can buy already made and ready to go. I'm not gonna hand you this on a plate with links just go and google this shit.
If you’re going for hyper realism then give up because without sewing skills you’re looking at commissioning someone to make a shirt without buttons that is going to be just as suitable as a button up shirt for x5 the price
