/cgl/, what is your genuine opinion of fursuiting?
Do you consider it to be cosplay or another category altogether? Do you love it, hate it/find it creepy, or perhaps admire the craftsmanship but can't get past the fanbase?
Pictures, horror stories, personal experiences, and any and all opinions welcome.

>> No.6707705

Another category, creepy.

>> No.6707710

It must be difficult to create a good-looking fursuit.

However, it's totally fucking creepy, especially when you actually add in the level of dedication it must take to create one.

>> No.6707713

>or perhaps admire the craftsmanship but can't get past the fanbase

Pretty much this. But I'm going to be honest, I've met a few nice furries, too. I just try to stay a little open minded about it. But it's just something about them that creep me out.

>> No.6707716

A handful of furries at a con I feel is fine. Younger children like to see the suits, and I can appreciate the craftsmanship os a well-put together suit.

But it does get creepy when they run up to people wanting hugs or wagging their asses or squeaking.

>> No.6707719

I think the more realistic bipedal fursuits are awesome. Quadsuits freak me out sometimes.

>> No.6707725

Fursuiters get a bad reputation because of some idiots just like cosplayers do. I used to think fursuits were a little creepy mostly because of the cartoon faces and how a lot of them don't talk.

Still, I have to give it up to them because that is a lot of work to make one of those and I love the realistic ones. I still don't like the cartoon ones because they just look so silly and stupid.

>> No.6707726

Mad respect for people who make the (good) suits. Theyre difficult to make and i've seen some amazing faces on them.

I have absolutely no problem with fursuits at cons as long as it remains fetish-free. I have a problem with ANY fetish in a con setting, but it happens too often with fursuits. I also cant bring myself to take those who think theyre actually animals/were once an animal/etc seriously.

I personally really like toon suits, especially if they have articulate jaws and follow-me eyes.
My favorite kind of suits are pic related, though. But that level of detail must be so fucking hard so it's no wonder it's rarely done...

>> No.6707760

I'm scared of them.

It's not really their fault. I was just the kid who was afraid of Chuckie Cheese when I was little.

>> No.6707774

>>6707760
ugh for me the whole chuckie cheese thing terrifed me because I could hear the animatronic/robotic parts moving inside... I didn't care that they were big mascots... I just feared the robots inside them...

Anyway... I have no problem with fursuits or furries... I don't get why people think they are creepy? Even the small % that are into the fetish stuff... I mean there is weirder shit out there that doesn't get nearly as much shit talk as furries, which I really don't understand... And the majority that don't do the kink side... isn't it basically the same as any hobby? Just doing what they love?

I just don't understand why they get such a bad reputation. There are aspie fucks in every hobby or fandom and weirder kinks out there yet furries always get hate. Never understood it and I'm not even one of them.

>> No.6707787

I don't find furries creepy at all. People with rape fetishes are way creepier. Compared to rape, an anthropomorphic wolf with blue fur and a mohawk is pretty fucking innocuous.
I also appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into a fursuit. Some of them are really impressive, and I enjoy seeing them.
If I see a really good one, I'll usually give them a hug and/or ask for a photo. I think they deserve the appreciation, and there's really no valid reason for them to get so much shit when there are so many worse fetishes.

>> No.6707792

>>6707774
This.
Honestly, I've heard worse shit about Homestucks than fursuiters and yet the latter tend to get a worse rap. I think most of the IRL furry fetishizing/awkwardness comes from people who aren't even wearing suits, too (just ears and tails and pimply faces)-- at least that's what I've seen from my personal experiences.
Honestly, I've made furry-style pawfeet for another costume and they're really fun to both make and wear. I almost want to make a partial fursuit just because of the construction-- it's hard work, but a ton of fun and really fulfilling as you see it come together.

>> No.6707789

I love it when furries are all "This is my very personal, unique character I need to portray" and it's just the same weird bug-eyed face that thousands of other fursuits/fursonas are based on.

I can appreciate a good fursuit as much as I can appreciate an elaborate well made cosplay, however. I'm

>> No.6707821

I'm a cosplayer-gone-fursuit-maker. I really really enjoy looking at and making suits! (Fun to design, fun to build, and I feel like I work with the materials better than when I cosplay.) I can't exactly say the same for 99% of furries though.

Only been to one con (one of the bigger US furcons) and despite the people being really well meaning/not sexual, everyone was still super fucking awkward. Like, literally the most spaghetti-everywhere socially awkward autists in one confined area. I never once got the creeper or sexual vibe there, but it was still really uncomfortable.

I honestly felt better interacting with people playing characters in fursuits than I did with people on the con floor. It was definitely a surreal experience.

They're original characters of no fanbase.
Technically cosplay, because a lot of the furries come up with a personality and stuff, it's just not a recognizable character like the rest of the con.

I personally find them creepy, but you have to admire them on a craftsmanship level. Fursuits are expensive, hard to wear, and harder to make. If you're going to put that much effort into some fetish fantasy you came up with on deviantArt, you have some major dedication, son.

I only consider it cosplaying if it's an established character (i.e. pokemon, mascots, etc). Otherwise it's just costuming.

As someone who uses fursuiting techniques in some of his cosplays...
Yeah, no, I still mostly hate furries.

There are some genuinely badass fursuits out there, though, but I notice quite a few of the best fursuit makers out there started out cosplaying.
That whole, knowing how to sew before attempting a fursuit helps a bit, I hear.

I'm always pro-mascot cosplay, but man, furries can really fuck them up sometimes, like with partial suits and making them look toony instead of accurate.

>> No.6707870

I really like fursuits - just not the fugly cartoony ones that look like they were rejected from a kids show or the janky I-made-my-first-suit ones. To me it is a step above cosplay. I don't mean it's better or more difficult, but because the costumer is completely encapsulated in their costume they ARE the character, not just dressed like one. I consider fursuits to be just a full-body costume, just like Big Daddies or Master Chief.

I consider it another category, but I don't really care. I don't care about furries, either, as long as they're not into actually bestiality to be honest. I don't think they're as big a deal as everyone makes them out to be, especially since they tend to stay in their own spaces, which they have a lot of. They don't really project their "fandom" I guess, for a lack of a better word like some other fandom is doing. On the other hand, I completely understand why it might upset some people, especially if they unwittingly stumble across it in some innocent image search.

tl;dr: While I find the porn disgusting, I don't feel like furries affect me on any personal level, and as long as they're in their own spaces (or being non-pornographic in more general ones) I don't see why anyone has a problem

This, it's so rare to see nicely done mascots. I want to do so many characters but I'm hesitant just because I don't want to be lumped in with the furries that wear their OC's to anime conventions and get offended for not knowing who they are.

The bug-eyed faces of the regular fursuits are kinda dumb looking imo, they all look the same to me except recolored. Seriously, I thought they were trying to be unique?

I love making mascot cosplays (Pokemon, Digimon, that sort of thing) and some of my 'idols' in the field mostly make fursuits of original characters. But when you see their work, you just can't help but be impressed, and I love to incorporate their methods into my cosplay suits. People who make hyper-realistic suits are my favorite- articulated jaws, moving/blinking eyes, light-up shit... It's all really crazy and you get a real sense of accomplishment when you finish a suit.

Being in a mascot costume at a con is also just a lot of fun. People who know your character get really hyped, you get lots of hugs, and people generally seem to find it less weird if you LARP at them when you're in a suit, since they know you can't exactly speak very well from inside the suit. Kids also get hyped if they know the character (if you're a Pokemon this is pretty much guaranteed) and it's fun to interact with them and their parents.

As far as furries themselves go... I've had mixed experiences with the community, but it's honestly the same ratio of cool people to freaks that I see in any cosplaying circle. It's just inevitable you'll meet upsetting people in such a big group.

I don't really understand why furries have such a bad rep. Especially with the fetish thing. Maybe I'm just too naïve, though. My rule of thumb is, as long as they don't have a crotch zipper, I'm cool with them until they give me a reason not to be.
Those who think they are/were animals and feel the need to expand on that thought kind of annoy me.

As far as cosplaying goes, the suits are very impressive. I decided I wanted to make a suit, just to see if I could. It takes a lot of dedication and time... and muscles if you don't have electronic tools. After doing it myself, I was incredibly pleased with the result--I feel like I sort of poured my heart into it more than any other costume because of the entire different mindset you needed to build it.
It was a simple Pokemon suit, rather than an OC anything. The fancy cartoon ones are impressive if they have multiple colors/patterns. Making things symmetric is really challenging when you can't just fold it in half and cut the pattern out once! The realistic ones are very impressive and I'll never understand how anyone could make something so advanced.

I think glass eyes and digigrade legs are a nice touch on the realistic ones.

Upwards of $3000, not including shipping and of course no guarantee that it will look exactly like previous models. You also need to factor in the costs of making yourself a duct tape dummy (DCT) and buying yourself a pair of throwaway shoes, so you can ship them to her for a full suit construction. That shipping is also on your dime.
Not to mention certain features such as airbrushed fur, OC designs, certain kinds of claws/details, and LEDs can cost extra.

I'm not sure why… both of the fursuits I wore weren't even particularly well-made, either. I've actually gotten a lot more insults for my cosplay than my fursuits, which boggles my mind!!

Not what I meant, at all as a matter of fact.
I don't know why you're so hellbent on starting an argument with me (and trying to pretend you're a different person all the while) but let me break it down so you can understand and get off my ass:

(Oh and btw I AM a cashier at a grocery store before you get on your high horse).
Saying someone is a grocery store cashier isn't meant to imply they're stupid or an idiot. Since I personally know all sorts of people with different jobs, talents, and intelligences who make fursuits I already know that you don't need a super special ability or take some fancy art class to make a suit.
Is it difficult? Yes sometimes, but certainly not something that cannot be learned by an average person.

And that's all I was implying. The end.

Because it's not at all possible that more than one person on this entire website would disagree with something you've said. I'm a different person. I literally just got home from work maybe a half-hour ago. Are you naturally this dumb, or do you have to work at it a little?

> Saying someone is a grocery store cashier isn't meant to imply they're stupid or an idiot.
Sure sounded like you meant it that way. "So easy a(n) x could do it." What are you, Geico? You may not need magical powers or to take classes to know how to make a suit, but I highly doubt that chick just plopped down one day and made a great suit. It took work, time, and dedication, and you used her day job as an excuse to belittle her skill.

Anyone could potentially learn to do anything that anyone else could do, but they don't. Why hold value in any skills at all if you could say, "Well anyone could learn it. I could learn that, too."

>"So easy a(n) x could do it."
You know I didn't say that and I really don't understand why you're trying to pull strawman arguments like this and continue an argument I'm NOT interested in having after I explained what I meant. I'm sorry you misunderstood me, but that's all it was. Seriously. A misunderstanding. I didn't "belittle" her skill, I just implied a lot of average people can make a fursuit after I was condescended upon and told to go "make one myself" like it's such an impossible task versus spending $3000.

>> No.6708307

>>6708264
That's not strawman at all. I didn't compare it to anything, I paraphrased your statement of "If a grocery store cashier can do it, then..." Which is verbatim what you said. I have a question, if you didn't mean to make it sound belittling or condescending, why mention her day job at all?

You claim that it's to illustrate how well an 'average person' can do something, but being a cashier has little to no bearing on how average a person is.

It may be a misunderstanding, but you can't expect people to know what you're saying if you don't know yourself.

The bottom line is, if her prices are so unreasonable, she wouldn't get any commissions at all. You may not value her skill at what she prices it, but other people do. And if they don't, then they don't buy it, and she would eventually get the hint that she needs to lower her prices. There's no reason to be a dick about it.

A strawman isn't a comparison. A strawman is exaggerating another person's point and attacking something that they never said to begin with. Hence "strawman" is not real.

>she wouldn't get any commissions at all
She doesn't get a lot of commissions...as a matter of fact. Either way I explained it to you so can you just let it go, for real?

Just because someone mentions a personal detail about someone else doesn't mean they meant it as an insult. I think at this point you're making knee jerk assumptions. They explained what they actually meant so your arguing looks really petty when they clearly want to drop it.

Since we're on the topic of fursuits, I actually have a question about possibly making a fursuit head. Sage for kinda off topic.
I was wanting to cosplay pic related and have his head be like a mascot/fursuit head. But I'm having some issues with planning it. Basically every fursuit head I've seen and every tutorial I've watched makes them in two pieces, one bottom jaw and one top (the top one including the nose, eyes, ears, etc). But with Ziggs his face is more human-structured. So I don't think I'd be able to make his face into two pieces (one bottom jaw and a top) because the tan fur (muzzle?) is connected as one piece. I don't really know if this makes sense, but does anyone think it would be possible to make a mascot Ziggs head and make it look like it's one solid piece? I know if I use foam that won't exactly work because if I were to open my mouth (which I would like to be able to do) the foam would rip apart when I open my mouth.
I hope this makes sense.

>> No.6708660

>>6708509
I'm a little confused on your question. Did you want a static jaw or not?

If you were to have a static jaw, you could make the head identical to the picture with no structural problems. Don't think of the foam too hard in terms of "what type of skull does this unrealistic cartoon character have", and think of it more in terms of a hairless version.

Were you planning on using a foam base, or a cast base? I'm going to bed now, but I'll check back in the morning and try to help out if the thread is still around.

I've wanted to make cute fursuits for a very long time but I never had te guts to do it. Mostly because of the fetish thing, I love cute characters and I really want to wear a cute fursuit like the japanese ones but I really can't see the characters in a sexual way. I really hate the whole thing with people automaticly thinking only men with creepy fur fetishes wear those suits... I'm thinking of making a fursuit of a realistic kitten in a sweet/classic lolita outfit. I would work really hard to make it as perfect as possible, with realistic fur, moving jaws with teeth and detailed eyes, in a really pretty coord. I just feel happy and warm thinking about being so cute and fluffy~

But I'm really afraid of actually start working on it because of the prejudice people will have on me. It wouldn't really end well if I had to explain my mother I'm planning to make a really expensive cat suit and walk around in it at cons and fairs. Especially the furry part, since furry things actually don't interest me at all, only the suits.

She's managed to be banned from UK's main furry website despite being "popular" (her imagination, not mine), when critiqued on Badfursuits she responded by abusing the poster/ her customer - thus getting herself banned from there too. Pretty much hated by all in the Uk community, asides from a few who got on her good side. Accused someone of raping her then was best friends with him a week later, after making him spend a night in a police station being questioned. Gets people's phone numbers and sends them abusive texts. Fucks around with everyone's partners.

She glues her suits together and when they fall apart hotglues them back together again, if she does repair them. When given advice by Fatkraken on how to improve, she essentially said "my customers don't complain so I don't improve" - her customers do complain, but she just cuts them off.

If you ever watch a livestream when she's working, wait for her kid to come into the room to complain he's shat himself or that he wants his mummy. She basically knocks him back and tells him she's too busy to take care of him. Prime example of somebody needing to take responsibility for her life.

I feel sorry for her though. She got pregnant very young, the dad's out the picture, she lives off of Wonga.com loans and from whatever she makes from her art and fursuiting. She'll live hand to mouth forever and will eventually disappear once she realises she can't make money from the scene anymore.

Alright fine whatevs. I'm gonna get crushed to death for this.

My friend owns pic related, it's a travesty of hot glue and clay teeth. He couldn't wear it for long due to the fact that he couldn't see shit through the eyes, despite the fact that she promised he'd be able to get his glasses in the suit. A week later and one wear which is when the picture was taken, the jaw fell off. The claws on the hands are glued in sideways and the tail is attached by a single loop and made on one of those blue foam tubes. I've taken it in for repairs and the whole lot of fur ripped off in one go. She doesn't know I have it, hopefully.

Later on in the year I let my friend borrow my tumblr account to post a picture to a bad fursuit tumblr. She found it. After explaining that I didn't post it, she called me a backstabbing cunt and went on a nice longwinded rant about how terrible I am. This was all through the friend that owns the suit in the picture. She's also made a few lovely comments about me in earshot at furmeets about my own (admittedly completely shit) work that I never plan on selling if I can help it. However she charges upwards of £300 for stuff that just doesn't look any good or even fit you.

>> No.6709609

Holy cow, she's got this auction going on - stating nobly that 10% is going to Cancer Research (doesn't state which specific charity and there's no justgiving page etc.)

http://www.furaffinity.net/full/10137234/

But that's only £35 or so at best really for very overpriced items - if this was so noble she'd be giving all the profits to charity (or be pricing them far lower).

Its kind of strange if they want to hug everyone, and act like a real cat/dog/fox whatever...

But like some poeple before me already said, its something diffrent if they play a known character (pokemon,digimon..). I like such "mascot" like costumes.

Sure, not everyone does. However, there is no mistake that there is a very large amount that do, to the point where it's extremely difficult to separate the fandom from some of the more sexual tendencies. It's similar to wearing a corset; some people see it as fashion aid, but a lot of people use corsets in BDSM, to the point where if you wore a corset in public you will more likely encounter people who associate your fashion choice with fetish gear.

I actually was curious about how much of the furry fandom was sexual or not, and I came across some interesting studies. I'll try to find them to post them here, but the studies took polls of how many furries were into the sexual part of the fandom (pornography, yiffing, etc.), versus how many were not. The average number was about 60% of the furries that were polled partook in the sexual part of the fandom. There were some other interesting findings, like 30% aligned themselves as homosexual and there was a high number of people that said they fell somewhere in the autistic spectrum. However, the studies did not state if the sampled furries in the study were actually diagnosed with some form of autism or aspergers, or if it was simply self-proclaimed, so I feel that more information is needed before that can be confirmed.

When I get home from work I'll try to find the studies, they were pretty interesting to read.

I have a sort of morbid fascination with furries in general, so I enjoy fursuits. It just seems so extreme and they go to such lengths to get these things made. Okay, I found three that I read before, but I'm missing I think one or two more studies. These cover more along the lines of their sexual orientation and stuff. Also, the strange dichotomy with the perception of the importance of sex to themselves vs the perception of the importance of sex to other furries is a very interesting result. a bunch of them said sex was the leat important, but then said they perceived that sex was medium to medium-high in importance to other furries. Projection? Who knows. Also, most furries are male, but I guess that was no surprise.

I think that they're often a little creepy-looking (especially when they go for the cartoony look like the one in the OP image), but I have to respect the expertise that goes into their construction. That being said, I feel that they're not appropriate wear for anime or comic conventions, unless it's an existing character. If you want to wear a Pikachu or Kyubey suit to an anime con, that's one thing, but people who take their super-special-snowflake wolf OC fursuits to conventions that aren't dedicated furry cons strike me as attention whores.

I think fursuiters wear their suits to anime cons because they don't have a lot of opportunities to wear their suits. Lots of places don't allow masks, and often times people will think you are promoting something. It's not so much an attention whore thing as much as furries taking advantage of the rare opportunities to do what they really enjoy.
