Still need to glue on the wefts, but I want a bit of feedback before I do. I have seen a few exposed wefts up top, but I'm thinking those will be fixed when I redo the twin tails. The exposed wefts on the edges will be hidden by glued fibers.

After that, all that will be left is trimming the wig and styling the bangs, which thanks to Movic's delays I can't really do until they give my eyepatch. I think of a first wig styling, I've done alright.

GaoGaiGar progress

One side of LinerGao (Shoulders) is primed and ready for final details and paint. Other side still needs to be cleaned up and have a few parts added. These will be pointed upwards at a high angle unlike my gundam costume. Good thing too since those got knocked around and fell off once or twice. These should be alot more stable.

Made a rough and dirty cardboard torso mockup today and then started on the real thing with foam-core board. Alot of it wont be visible since the lions head takes up about 90% of the chest and the back will be completely covered by the wings.

Wanted to start on the head mockup tonight but I ran out of materials. Will start on that tomorrow after hitting the store.

Ended up deciding to re-make the hexhead. The cardboard would have required too much work to get it smooth. The wooden one isn't as exact since it's hard to use a router to make the phillips head, but I don't think anyone will notice.

Here's a comparison between the old one and the new one. The new one is going to be a bit heavier, but it will also be more solid since... it's a fucking block of wood.

Looks heaps better than where you started! Way to stick with it. For next time, as stated by: >>6701775

Clip the curved parts of the seam and use the curved point of the ironing board to flatten it out. Make sure that both allowances are pointing the same direction and press them BEFORE attaching the back at the shoulder. It makes things lay a lot more smoothly and also makes later construction easier. Also, if you're lining things, this tutorial is like magic:

Looking for some advice from all you cglers.

Been working on a Blanca Gijinka from Animal Crossing and I got most everything finished today (I still need to get the wig cut. My coworker went to beauty school and is gonna do it. And I'm not wearing my shoes in this picture. They are just some white flats).

I'm digging the costume sans the mask. I am not totally sure how I feel about it. I put it on my facebook and some people were saying it looked fine, there was just an off balance of white. What do you guys think? Any ideas if it does look horrible? I posted a picture of it without a mask in there but I really think I should have something on my face since it's the whole purpose of the character.

I also found a quilting marker so people could draw on my face so people will be able to draw on the mask I have on in the picture.

I've never played the game but I'll throw an idea at you since the other anons said this is for the character. Why don't you get one of those faceless masks and put it to the side of your face? The kind that has the elastic and is circular and plain.

Pic sorta related but imagine this without all the face stuff on it.

>> No.6702441

>>6702428
I get it. In my head it all fit together since I figured people could draw on the zentai mask with disappearing ink so it'd be easy for drawings to disappear, easy to lift up and talk and see when needs, etc but the result of it all coming together today proved not to be what I had imagined, hahaha.

I'll try and think of something to make a seamless mask and something to draw on it that will wipe off.

If anyone has any advice I'm all ears :V

A solid mask would be better. Something that is sturdy but is removable or if you do go with a fabric mask make it look like the one in the image and have it end under your chin, not down your neck. If you want to make it less abrupt you could get white makeup and blend along the edge of the mask and skin area.

>> No.6702451

>>6702441
If you need to draw on it, take: >>6702436 with a plain mask and spray on top of it something that's glossy and clear. Then use cheap white board markers and you should hypothetically be able to wipe that off though you may need a spray if it doesn't wipe easily.

Thanks for those ideas guys. I tried googling some faceless masks and wasn't finding much but it probably would be easy to build up something like the first anon linked to get rid of the features.

And I do like the makeup idea with the blending. I might dick around with that too. Thanks again <3

Saging for posting so much. And I'll be lurking in case anyone has any other ideas.

No problem. I was thinking that for a solid mask (if it's made out of plastic or the like, you could cut out eye holes, replace the cut out part with clear plastic and then glue a sheer piece of white fabric behind it. This way people could draw all over the mask but if they get it on the eye area you could just wipe it off.

Thank you. I'm slightly worried that the tuffs need to washed since I used an oil+water (1:7 ratio) mixture to prevent tangling. This might help the bangs stay up too. As well as using a better hairspray. I read that freeze spray being thrown around a bit.

I did a wig test and indeed the fringe was both too long and rather pronounced. I trimmed it a bit and then made it less so. It's still there but no huge gaps.

NEW MASK FOR MY ANIMAL CROSSING COSPLAY GETTING MADE THAT WILL HOPEFULLY BE BETTER. (Thank you anons from before.<3) Covered a plastic mask in model magic. I need to cut of the eccess when it dries a bit and add some ties. I'm just gonna take it off if I wanna talk or see. Also gonna lacquer the hell out of it so I can just have people draw on it with dry erase. Also about 90% done with my Lilly cosplay now. I need to cut and style the base wig and get a different undershirt for it. Everything is lookin' real wrinkly because it's been sitting in a basket.

And at this second I'm sewing wefts to the bottom of my Filia wig near the bottom of Samson's mouth to fill it out a bit more. Then to start on the hair tentacles.

Also, what you seemed to miss is that you generally do not use a dart AND princess seam. The princess seam is there to compensate for the dart. You can completely shift that dart into the princess. This would eliminate the pucker in any future tops you make.

Darts and the shifting of darts is a simple drafting principle, and you can probably find information about it online. It looks better than before, but it won't hurt to learn something new for the future.

Yes, it is a princess seam. Its not ironed yet and on a mannequin that doesn't have to same shape as me. What exactly is wrong with it? You can see it better in the picture of it above where I am wearing it. I know its not perfect, but Im fine with it since it will be covered. Unless you have an idea to make it look better? You should be ironing as you sew in each seam, not waiting until the end. Ironing will even out the thread tension and it'll just become harder for each seam as you sew more fabric pieces together. Also clip the curves if you haven't already.

This. It is also very easy to find inexpensive princess seam patterns for tops. This would at least give you practice on how princess seams work. Everyone on this board understands the frustrations of starting over, but sometimes it is just the best option. This is why you never move onto your fashion fabrics without having made mock-ups, first. This way you can start over as often as you need to and not worry about wasting money on good fabric.

for something like that you're probably going to want to go more in the direction of an industrial adhesive, like caulk. It sticks like all fuck, but it doesn't expand. caulk up the head of your axe and stick the haft up there, and your house will fall down before that fucker comes off.

It looks like you also have exposed edges on your foam in the body of the axe head. Fill any gaps where the face of the axe form meets the actual form with bondo to get a uniform finish, and then I would suggest watering down wood glue and basting it over all the foam surface to fill in the pores in the material and seal it for painting.

The handle and head are in two pieces because I need to be able to break it down to get it on a plane. The core of the handle is a pvc pipe with a screw head, and there's a...screw attachment thing (I cannot into terminology) glued into the pipe on the head. Right now it's all clamped together to dry, and then I'm going to build up the proper finial shape with foam before the whole thing gets painted.

Wood glue is a great idea- I was just going to layer gesso, but wood glue sounds like it might be more effective. Also going to switch to caulk for the rest of it, because I nearly cried when I took the weight off and I saw fucking glue everywhere. Thanks!

Yeah, of course! The top skirt is gathered at the top and the bottom to give it that bubble appearance. Underneath the top skirt are 6 skirts with ruffles sewn to a layer of petticoat tulle. Oh I should mention that all the skirts are circle skirts. For LSP you don't need the layers of cotton with the ruffles, you'll just need a few layers of gathered tulle to help support the top skirt. I think that's everything. I hope that helps a bit!

Here is a comparison shot with my old gundam helm. The GaoGaiGars head is about 25% smaller. My big ole noggin just barely fits in it. This was a big problem with my last suit since the scale was pretty much spot on except for the head. The new helm also doesn't use any fiberglass and is made entirely out of PVC. Its not nearly as strong as the gundam helmet but it is much much lighter and more comfortable to wear.

Yeah, I think that's due to the brown fabric being a bit thinner and a lack of interfacing, so adding the pleating between the two colors seemed to add enough stability to make it less wrinkly. The current state is in need of power sanding (as you can see) but I need to do that outside, which I can't right now, because of the snow that's fucking all over it.

Made some progress. On of the tuffs is perfect but I'll need to cut it to make it line up with the other one. I fixed somethings and added some wefts, as well as did some thinning of the wig. I stopped since I was worried I was removing too much. It's not perfect, and it probably won't be, but for a first time I'm alright with it.

I'm not planning on wearing it to a con or anything, if I do, I'll redo it. I found out I need three wigs to pull this off, 2 for weft harvesting, 1 as the base. It would probably help in that I now know what works and what doesn't as well as have the supplies to do this.

Looks like thin layers of pink insulation foam.

Likely going to be shaped and then coated in epoxy for a hardcoat before paint.

Epoxy coatings make insulation foam rigid?
I work with insulation foam often and making weapons--swords n' shit--out of it is easy, but keeping them from bending when held horizontally is annoying, so epoxy helps?

how fast is the conversion? So cool

I think next time I'm going to use a wig head that fits my head a bit better as well as do the tails while it's on my head. Well, lesson learned I would like to know what I could improve on for next time though.

Things I've noticed:
-wig appears too fat
-bangs are too thick for style
-sides are not flush to skin (they were until I added a weft)
-better tuffs
-lose more weight (I'm currently working on that part)

It helps massively, especially with a layero f muslin added; it's like fiberglass but incredibly cheap. Make sure it's epoxy resin, and not some other kind that has a solvent in it; or bye-bye foam.

It's made out of pink insulation foam! We put screws in it to make the blades arm moves. Also there is magnets in it to keep it in sword form.

>>6720311
Thank you! Pretty quick, like a few seconds to move the arms.

Wig heads tend to be pretty damn small to begin with. Look into one of the male versions. You could also mod an existing one.

The one I use(and looks kind of gross but is incredibly effective) was I made a mold of my head and used expanding foam in the head to make my own wig head. Now I know every wig I work on will fit my head since it's made on something my exact head size.

This is literally one of the best ways to make a wig mold. If you do it right, you can even make a full foam cast of your head; and use it for makeup tests, special prosthetics, masks, etc. Especially if you reinforce it; and if you make a good mold you can make multiple pulls for testing different things at once, or if one gets ruined.

Thank you both. I didn't know what to make it with to make one. I feel a bit dumb, but would a paper mache mold be sturdy enough to make a few?

Yeah. When I made it, I used rigid wrap to build the mold.

I found an old tutorial for it which was telling you to fill it with plaster of Paris. I haven't been able to find the tutorial since. I just switched it to expanding foam and it worked like a charm.

It was pretty much stick your hair up in a swim cap, cover your eyebrows and other facial hair with petrolium jelly and a little plastic wrap.
Then you pretty much wrap your whole head in the rigid wrap. I used about two packs of it and of course using a couple straws to leave your nostrils free. I had my mom help me with it since it's much easier to have somebody else do it for you once you end up covering your eyes.

Then when it dried, I used a pair of medical sheers, cut up the neck to behind one ear until I could get my head free. I then used tape to close the slit back up, coated the inside of the mold with petroleum jelly, then put the mold upside down, and used the expanding foam.

When I did it I overfilled the mold with foam so I ended up with a ton of it going over the neck hole. So when a person does it, they should do about half way first then add more later. If you give it about 24 hours, it should be completely set. I pulled the mold a little early and some spots were still sticky. If you reinforced the mold with multiple layers of something like duct tape, it'd probably hold up well.

It's actually really great for making masks because you can actually gauge where your facial features are, and you can mark stuff like your hairline. The ears aren't super pronounced but you get a general idea of where they are. Which makes it much easier to pin stuff down to your own hairline.

I don't think the basic makeup tests would work, but it'd be good for the prothetics, masks, and seeing how a wig lays on your face to see if the cut flatters you.

I use the wig all the time when I'm working on commissions since I know that if the wig fits me, it should definitely fit my customers.

Probably; yeah. Just use strong glue for the paper mache, and some fiberous paper. (newsprint might delaminate, ymmv.)

When you are actually casting it; wrap the fuck out of it with some duct tape or similar; this will prevent the mold from warping due to the pressure made by expanding foam, if it cures unevenly (it often does)

Paper mache could work. Like I said >>6720381
I used rigid wrap. Which is pretty much the same stuff they have us use to make volcanos as kids. You can find the stuff at Michaels.

I really either need to properly write up a tutorial or make a video since I have never been able to find the old original tutorial.

But here's one that kind of explains the same thing.

I did my strips horizontally instead of vertically, and used petroleum jelly instead of dish soap.

Thanks guys <3 I've been working too long on this wig and I'm glad it's getting some positive response.

AND HERE ARE THE BASE FOR MY HAIR TENTACLE THINGS ALL PAINTED. Been carving and sanding expanding foam for most of the day so I'm glad they are done. Spikes are separate pieces I will be gluing in after they are covered in hair so it's easier to just, attach hair to the entire thing. Already started applying hair to some of the spikes. I've got 4 days to cover these guys completely. I'm pretty sure I can do it since the rest of my cosplays are at about 90%.

>four days.

I wish I had time to finish Cerebella. But I have to remake the dress. I started using basic polyester and realized it just wasn't working out for a fitted dress. Unless I wanted my ass showing after only take a few steps every time. I'm just glad I don't have any conventions to work in April, maybe I can actually get some sewing done.

I hope pulling my costume out of the wood works in preparation for Anime Matsuri counts as progress, haha.

Besides giving it a good ironing, what can I do to get rid of the tugs around the waist area? I didn't have a body form when I was making it so I did a lot of pinching and it looked fine when my arms were down so I didn't give it much thought at the time but now I see my mistakes and would really like to fix them for AM. I haven't trimmed my seam allowances yet, if it helps any with the advice.

Thanks!!

Nothing fancy. I finished my apron for Hungary tonight. I would've had the dressed finished too, but the zipper I bought was way too short.
