I'm a UK based photographer and i'm wanting to start shooting some cosplay and i come to you looking for help..

Can you post your favourite cosplay shot, not necessarily for the quality of the the outfit, but specifically, in your opinion, for the quality of the photography?

I can't think of a better way of judging the expectations of a cosplay shoot than asking the community directly.

Both would be great! I'm trying to get an insight into what the cosplayers like rather than look at images from a technical point of view.

>Showcase the costume well
>Do not take creepy up-skirt or bare foot shots
>Research the character to gain insight as to how that character would/does pose
>Don't try to recreate those poses, but take influence from them and combine it with how you'd pose a regularly clothed person for a portrait (shoulders back, chin up, ect.)
If you can't research before you shoot (even looking up the character on your phone or something), ask the cosplayer, and observe the type of costume to determine if they're regal, edgy, cutesy, sexy, ect.

I've been shooting cosplayers for 5 years as well as being a portrait photographer for just as long.
All the photos posted below are examples of what I said about researching what the character does, and mimicking or taking reference from it. Don't just have them stand in a typical "model" pose, and don't shoot them in the middle of a hallway or something, research locations and find places with few to no things to edit out of the background. Also, match the background to the character's environment. Sci-fy shots are best done in futuristic looking buildings, whereas Fantasy is better in forrests or gardens.
Barefoot shots are creepy no matter what. Women like to feel sexy, but when you take advantage of that women's willingness to do a bare foot shoot and post the pictures without consent on a fetish website, or even on facebook, it's inappropriate. Consent to take the photo is not the same as consent to post the photo online.
Trust me when I say you don't want to see the glue photos, you'll want to gouge your eyes out.
No matter how sexually suggestive the cosplay is, it is NEVER okay to take sexually explicit pictures of the costume unless the model is 18+ and consents to the taking and release of the photos, and even if they do, it's still in bad taste
