I found one thing that helps is don't tie your hair in tight ponytails or buns for long periods of time. I used to keep my hair in a tight ponytail for my job, but my hair started to thin, especially around my temples and crown. I started wearing it in a braid and trying to keep it down when I'm at home and it's coming back again.

I don't think it means that much. I don't want to be rude, but I think that as long as you aren't very overweight (and I mean like really round, not chubby), any body shape works. However, having large breasts and a huge ass are going to make a lot of fashions look weird, imho.

Like >>6679856 said, more rectangular bodies are probably better, because the flowy clothing will sit better on you. If you have huge breasts, it might look a little weird. I'd say the same goes for sweet lolita (and probably other types of lolita) and fairy kei.

Things like otome, hime styles, etc are probably suited or any silhouette. I do think that having an extremely curvy body with gyaru would be bad, because it'd REALLY make you look like a hooker. You know how flatter girls can get away with low cut shirts and booty shorts whereas girls with big tits and a big ass get called slutty for it? Yeah, like that.

Kind of jfashion related. My boyfriend is leaving for Japan for a business trip next week and he said he would pick up clothes for me! An obviously foreign man buying women's clothes is going to be awkward as fuck, yes. Especially if he doesn't speak Japanese very well. When I went shopping with my (very white, 6'3") boyfriend, most boutique staff were obviously uncomfortable with him even though he was obviously just fulfilling bag-holding duties at the time.
Maybe he can memorize some phrases like "I am buying presents for my girlfriend" and show them a picture of you together on his phone or something. They're trained to constantly hover around shopping girls and recommend stuff, so if he plays the role of clueless boyfriend buying clothes for A Girlfriend He Can Prove Exists they may be more comfortable because at least that's something they can work with.

Even if they can speak a little, 99% chance they're too shy/insecure to even try. Pointing/gesturing goes a long way, and he can also get a phrase book (Lonely Planet makes an awesome one that's pretty cheap).

And I agree with >>6682256 on the issue of bringing a man in.
My boyfriend is Japanese and girls in lolita shops were very visibly uncomfortable with him being there, despite me attempting to chat with them and him just sitting in their waiting area flipping through a magazine.
I do think that gyaru shop staff are a lot more ok with men being there though - my boyfriend did go into Liz Lisa once by himself, and while he said he got stares, I don't think it was any worse than that (but again, he's not foreign, so ymmv). They've also always been very amiable to me when we're together.

>> No.6682463

>>6682456
Actually, come to think of it, gyaru shop staff tends to be way more chatty and amiable than lolita staff. Only once did I have a fantastic experience - in AP Laforet, and I was dressed head-to-toe in AP, so I'm sure that helped.

Anyway, I'm not even sure what fashions you're interested in ha.

I'll be going to Japan for the first time ever this year and I'm wondering about other peoples experiences about doing the whole jfashion scene. I will be mostly alone though so I am feeling unsure if I want to be both in weird clothes and a clear foreigner. I'm also wondering about the angura-kei fashion and how open they are to foreigners. From the sounds of other threads though the fashion shops and lolita shops seem more welcoming if you're clearly in the style. I'm usually pretty confident about walking around in weird outfits but that is in London.

Get a hold of the Zipper and Spoon magazines to get the in on the new releases, stalk the crap out of the ETC main site and blogs. Get an SS to go in store. Marui One carries some ETC online, but they're usually 2-3 months old releases (usually ones that don't instantly sell out).

I agree with >>6691960 that it's gyaru, but with different styling the outfit could easily fit with otome. A lot of the girlier gyaru styles fit that aesthetic.

Pic related - this is an Ank Rouge shop staff, but with tights, lighter makeup, a cute hair accessory, and maybe different shoes, this look could be considered otome.

I think it's important to remember that a lot of styles hinge on the details - so a slight change makes a big difference, but don't get too caught up in categorizing everything.

My experiences with various different styles:

>lolita
Basically head-to-toe AP - I only wore this from my hostel to the train station, on the train, and in Harajuku.
An older man gaped and told his friends he saw a doll (made me laugh), I got mistaken for shop staff in Closet Child, and the shop girl in AP Laforet chatted with me for-e-ver, which was fun.
Nothing really negative, but I didn't go many places in it.

>otome
These are all while wearing ETC:
-got called Doll-san a lot
-got heckled by a crazy homeless man at Osaka Castle who called me a prostitute (but he was literally not right in the head, so...probably would have happened no matter what I was wearing)
-lots of young girls (elementary school age) calling me cute

>gyaru-ish (gyaru brands, circle lenses, falsies)
100% positive reactions, I can't think of anything negative that's happened to me while wearing that.

How do I get curls and volume like that near the bottom?

>> No.6696039

Not a hair expert but my japanese hair stylist has done a similar thing on me before; He used a thick curling iron curling both in and out, and then he scrunched the bottom of my hair with hair wax to loosen and define the curls, and finally a bit of hair spray to set everything. Hope that helped! Any hair experts feel free to correct me!
