This was my first cosplay. I wanted something easy since it was for a school project, and my main focus was the gun.

Of course, being new to cosplay, I also wasn't aware of 1: The attention I'd get for wearing a popular and revealing outfit at at the con, and 2: The bad rep Yoko cosplays have. Nooot gonna wear this again.

Wig and boots are shit.

Personally, one of my biggest peeves when it comes to Yoko cosplays is the belt. So so many Yoko cosplays I've seen have had nicely styled wigs, accurate-soled boots, and a decent gun, but their belt is a store bought belt that looks nothing like Yoko's. It's such a simple thing to make. :<

Aside from that, I feel that Yoko's rifle is an integral part of the cosplay and it disappoints me when I see Yokos with no gun. I have a strong dislike for Yokos that pose in "sexy" ways. Yoko is strong and cute, not sexy and enticing.

It was an a-cup Yoko whose cosplay inspired me to watch the show. I have nothing against Yokos who lack curves, or are a little thick, because I feel if you can pull off the character's personality and put together a good costume, you've done it well. However, muffin top fat rolls on a Yoko are a huge no-no.

I hate that Yoko cosplays have such a bad rep, because it makes it hard for girls to cosplay a character they like and/or want to be like.
I'll dmit, i do have a Yoko cosplay lined up for an upcoming con, and I am a little bit afraid of the feedback, especially since this is my second time going at this cosplay (I'm taking a lot of steps to improve just about everything).

For photoshoots, I think the gun is a necessary prop, for sure! However, some conventions are pretty strict with prop policies (AKA the ones I go to), and anything that looks remotely like a weapon will be taken away.

This is my cosplay (on the right)
The gloves were put together really last minute (hence the looking like shit and falling apart) but I think everything else came out pretty good.
and I used the cape cause my gun is still in progress...
it needs a scope, to be painted, and a kickstand...I'm like 5"10 and those shoes added a good 3-4inches, and I tried to make my gun accurate to her size so it's about 7 feet. -.-
didn't think about the transportation thing....
anyway, go ahead a chew me apart. lol I love cosplaying her cause Gurren Lagann is literally on of my favorite shows ever.

Thanks. Back then I didn't normally maintain a workout routine or strict diet, but I lived in a very rural area in the boonies so I walked through the forests a couple times a week. The family I was living with at the time bought their food from local "whole/natural" grocers, dairy farms, and butchers. They also didn't buy any microwavable food and the only available snacks were fruits and veggies.

Same. There's a lot of negativity in cosplaying towards girls who chose revealing cosplays. It's not like it isn't completely unwarranted, but the fact a lot of people cry "slut!" before actually knowing anything about the cosplayer is a little depressing.

Oh, that weapons policy thing I can understand. I've only ever been to three different cons and none of them had a super strict weapons policy, though Ohayo has problems harassing people with their policies.

Colossal is the only con I still go to and the weapons policy is incredibly lax.

Lol, I'm 5'7"/5'8" so my gun is around 7ft as well. Since it's all wood and PVC pipe it was pretty heavy.

Make it able to be split in two if you can. I can't transport mine at all in anything but a truck or SUV.

As for your costume, it's actually quite good. You managed to perfect many of the little things people miss, like the colour of the ties on the top, and the style of the belt.

Only little thing I see really wrong is the lack of bracelets.

Can someone recommend healthy foods to buy for someone on an EXTREMELY tight budget?
I work out every day, sometimes twice a day for about 15+ minutes. I walk everywhere I can, drink 2+ litres of water every day, etc.
The only thing I'm having trouble with is food.
I have a con in two and a half months that I will be cosplaying Yoko at, and I'd like to be in a bit better shape than I am now.

Most veggies and greens are pretty cheap and low-calorie. Chicken as well. But in the end, if you want to lose weight, it's not so much what you eat as how much you eat.

I'm 5'6" and my weight is at 143.
Fairly chubby, as you can see. I'm also quite the newbie when it comes to working out and diets, not to mention I'm pretty obviously out of shape.
I started working out, well, not too long ago. Like, two, maybe thee weeks ago is when i started to go at it every day. I feel silly thinking I can get at least a half decent body by the time the convention rolls around, but a part of me still thinks it can be possible?

Huh, weird that there are two Yoko threads today and I was just thinking about the possibility of cosplaying her today.
Okay, Gurren Lagann is my favorite series (I'm a huge Gainax fan in general) and I'd love to cosplay from it. I was thinking of maybe doing Yoko because although she's not my favorite character, she's probably the one I see myself the most in out of the cast. Her primary outfit from the first part of the series also seems not extremely difficult to construct (I haven't been cosplaying for a long time and I definitely don't have the skillset to make startits or Yomako) and good for summer cons when it comes to staying cool. However, there are a couple of things I'm worried about which seem like they're common concerns from this thread so far (I don't come on /cgl/ often, bear with me if I'm kind of slow here)
First off, I'm a little bit nervous that people won't take me seriously if I cosplay as her. It seems that it's kind of an attention whore staple? I'd like to cosplay from the series at a con because I love it and maybe to strike up conversation with people who also adore it. For those of you who've cosplayed her, is being looked down really common when cosplaying Yoko?
Second is the obvious body shit. My measurements are 35-24-38 and I'd probably try to lose weight for this, but, I don't know how much I should aim to shed. Mostly I'm nervous that my ass is waaaaay too lumpy, ahaha.

I actually don't own a scale myself, i just use my Wii Fit, which seems to be pretty accurate as far as the weight recording goes.

You can cosplay Yoko if you want to! Try not to be afraid of what others think... and I'll try to take my own advice on that one, haha.

Honestly I don't think a perfect Yoko cosplay has been done but if there was to be one it'd be a curvy lady with a toned body. Not over weight, but not skinny fat either.

Body-type.. for the PERFECT yoko? She appears to be an hourglass, small defined waist but big bust and shoulder width matching big hips and ass.

Anyway that's just me chiming in to answer OP's question from looking at a shot from the anime and the chicks in this thread.

i see the most issues with the top being the wrong kind/wrong material/not enough padding for boob and underboob and the wig being wrong color, wrong pony tail length, wrong pony tail height, and no orange eyeware.

You have the right body type for Yoko imo. As long as the shorts fit okay (the ones you're wearing in that picture are too tight esp in the crotch) I think you'd be about a 5. Not horrible, but not great.

If you want to be an amazing Yoko rather than an average one I'd wait until you've lost a few pounds--not many, otherwise you'll lose those nice curves. Maybe 120-115 instead of your current 125-130? It shouldn't be too hard to lose 5-10 pounds before a con if you start early enough.

Thanks for all the input folks! I didn't expect half this much, nor of such quality.
I'm not so much fixated on Yoko as being able to feel confident doing some similar skimpy cosplay, if only to prove to myself that I can rock dat shit. Whatever the case, I'll probably wait until I'm back down to ~115-120 and hope I still have decent boob-mass. 100lb isn't so far fetched for my height but I would probably lose most of my curves so I won't go that far. I don't have a chance at being /fit/ though: I am far to lazy for that and frankly I am surprised that I'm not fatter than I am now with the way I laze about. I know someone mentioned that I'm pear shaped but I think that is just the low angle of the photo+smooshed bikini top boobs as I measure as an hourglass. Either way, dance tights and boob magic would be a must for that anime bod.

I appreciate the help! Maybe I can muster the confidence to wear a midriff baring costume sometime this year.

Also, I feel like she has the right body type to cosplay her. There are many others that I have also liked (some random girl that keeps getting posted here, and others in this thread..)

I think you have to be a little thick to cosplay Yoko. Not fat, ever, but have some tits or at least enough to pad them.

Anyway like an anon said up at the beginning of this thread, I love it when Yoko's lean more to the cute side rather than trying to be all sexy (unless they are post time skip). The great majority of Yoko cosplayers I've seen just give the usual "I'm a sexy Yoko giving a blank stare" and that gets boring.
To me Yoko is more than having the right measurements or being a certain weight, sure those are important but so is actually having an accurate cosplay/a cute face/ and some (character appropriate) attitude that comes through in your cosplay.
But then again I'm very picky. I frankly think that a PERFECT Yoko is simply an unattainable goal simply because 3D can only look so close to 2D and someone will always find flaws.
I think cosplayers should just dress up as the characters they love, and have fun. Sure it's awesome to come as close as we can to being "perfect" but sometimes we lose sight of the overall picture which is having a good time.

Bracelets:
I used foam rubber wrapped in athletic tape, and the "studs" were just sculpey. They're thick and tight enough to stay on my wrist in any pose, but squishy enough to slide on and off.

You shouldn't need to add the tape. I had to do that because the foam I used was scrap and really cut up/messy.

Gun:
Depends on what your budget is, and what tools are available to you. I had a full wood shop at my disposal, so my gun was all PVC pipe and wood.

I've seen some guns made with cardboard and duct tape on PVC pipe. That's the cheapest alternative, but obviously it's not very durable.

I'll post some pics to explain what I did.

I used three sizes of PVC pipe. Obviously the thickest was at the ends of the scope. You can barely tell the difference but the thinnest was on the middle of the scope.

The muzzle was a rectangular block. The corners were cut off with a tablesaw at a 45 degree angle to give it an octagonal shape. A flat drill bit was used to drill the hole in either end, making sure the PVC pipe could fit into one end.

Ventilation holes were also drilled in the in the sides with the flat bit, spaced about an inch apart.

A belt sander was used to sand the base of the muzzle.

Since I wanted it to be secure, I used a piece of scrab wood cut from a broom handle to serve as a peg to keep the muzzle in place. I used the flat drill bit again to drill a hole through the muzzle and pipe from the top, then coated the peg in wood glue, stuck it through the hole, and sanded the ends smooth.

The grip was just an old Larami water pistol I had sitting around.

I made the mag out of some patterned wood scraps. The longest part was two sheets of wood glued back to back. I used more scrap wood to line the edges.

The toy gun managed to fit perfectly snug inside the mag, making it easily removable.

Here it is screwed in place. You can also see how the scope was held on.

A band saw was used to make the "8" shapes, making sure they could fit around both pipes. A notch was also cut out of the bottom end.

More scrap wood was screwed onto the top of the main pipe and the 8's were slid into place. This was to ensure the scope didn't flop over.

The stock, as you can see in an above picture, was made from more flat wood which was glued onto the pipe, but obviously that's not going to hold it on very well. The outside was, once again, random shit I had laying around- a plastic panel for the "windows" of a greenhouse.

Once that was assembled, a flexible sheet of PVC plastic was cut to size, and bent around the stock, then glued and screwed in place.

The strap was made from a canvas strap from some scraps I got off of Etsy. I used the same stuff for the belt, I just painted it pink for the gun.

The adjustment buckle and end clips were pulled off an old camping bag.

Holes were drilled in one side of the main pipe and small o-hooks were screwed in. These are what the strap is clipped onto.

After it was assembled, the lenses were covered in painting tape and the whole thing was sprayed down with a matte black spray paint, then given a light dusting with silver spray, followed by a clear matte overcoat. I used the painter's tape to tape lines in the stock, then painted the yellow stripes by hand and sprayed on more overcoat. The red rings around the barrel are just electrical tape.

Iiii think that's it. It's been a couple years since I did this, so I might be missing some small details. Just make sure you measure correctly before cutting or drilling anything. I fucked up the first time I tried to make the muzzle. :<
