Hmm I guess if I had a complaint I'd say that these line-up poses look really dull? I understand it is the best way to showcase the outfits they've made but I think my largest complaint is that it feels really lifeless.

Even if all of them did a lineup, they could have been more quirky with it. Not idolm@ster well at all, all the photos I've looked up of it shows the girls being energetic and lively. I feel like if they at least showed a lot more passion/personality in posing they'd look younger, too. I already like the one to the far left quite a bit, with the black/grey skirt because at least she struck an interesting pose.All lined up in the same way, same pose, kind of projects an air of discipline that an older person has to me, so they all look older because of it.

The posing and expressions definitely need help. I'm a huge fan of these series and only a few girls in this entire group look like they know who their character is, what she is like and what they should be doing.

To me it looks like a serious case of 'bunch of girls doing a big group for attention' and that really takes away from the picture and costumes. They're just so uninspired looking which makes them look older as well as unsuited to the characters.

I find even if you don't bear a striking physical resemblance to the character if you have the personality and body language down you'll look better than someone the right height and age.

I have a funny feeling people would complain either way. I prefer height accuracy over "distracting" (because really the characters in the show are slightly different heights and Takane usually does actually stick up out of the bunch). Is it distracting in the show? Maybe. So on that point I can agree with you, I just think they translated decently height wise to real life based on the show. I think Chihaya is supposed to be shorter, I guess Azusa is taller like Takane? Other than that I personally don't see how the height could be more accurate.

Chihaya is 162cm, Azusa is 168cm and Takane is 169cm, so while they don't tower over the others those three are still the tallest in the group.

I think they did a really good job with the costumes, the heights are all kind of off but I can't really fault them too much for that. It's almost impossible to have each girl play a character similar to their height while still taking into account personal preference.

Shortest to tallest should be: Yayoi, Iori, Hibiki, Yukiho, Twins + Haruka, Miki, Chihaya, Azusa, Takane.

I know that a good amount of them are pretty familiar with the game, and if I were cosplaying a character, I'd make sure I knew what their personality was like/relationship to other characters. (I mean, they've already done a few idolmaster groups already)

so I think the main problem they have is just posing in general. I understand it's pretty hard to organize a well balanced group photo when you have a fuck ton of people, so I think they should've practiced that a bit before hand like "let's do so-and-so pose"

I don't admit to knowing everything about it but I do know that Takane usually looks more cool while Asuza is more reserved. That's not to say that they never pose energetically- but for Ami/Mami, Miki, and Yayoi are the more peppy characters that almost never are so lifeless in a picture as these cosplayers are.

People bitching about the pose in OP maybe should consider the photographer might have _asked_ them to pose like that for the photo. It doesn't look like they are in a crowded area so I think a photog probably pulled them off to the side to get specific shots like this.

The costumes are great, and I'm impressed with the group but...

Idolm@ster's biggest selling point is the moe factor. None of these girls have it. I'm quite disappointed with some of my favorite characters, especially Takane. There's no moe and youth, just girls in idolm@ster costumes. The harsh comments are expected since otaku have such high standards.

I think these pictures make the girls faces look really harsh. Let's not forget how idols' photographers abuse exposure and editors abuse blur like no one's business. These pictures, while probably professionally touched up (who knows to what degree), are harsher than the seiyuu pic and other Japanese/Asian cosplay pictures that I've seen.

These girls are NOT models. I am impressed that they managed to get everyone's body type in a reasonable range. Yeah their faces aren't the early teen idol type, but none of them are in their early teens. Maybe with some idol style photo editing, it could be perfect. I'm still saving photos because it's an awesome group.

who taught these girls to smile with teeth? the first thing you notice about Japanese idols is 'cute' expressions not huge, toothy white girl grins that create nasal labial folds.

note how smiling with a closed mouth definitely helps most of the more cute looking girls in the photo, and is also more asian looking because small mouths are a sign of beauty. it also makes the grinning girls look much more american, and out of character.

if you want to smile with teeth THAT BADLY, open your mouth a little bit so your upper teeth show a little, and don't clench your jaws together. If you see the bottom row of your teeth its too much. you won't get squinty eyed or haggard looking that way. pic related.

Because you only get better at sewing with age and if the majority of their recognizable outfits are complicated then you can only expect older people to tackle it.

The heights are more than a little off. Yayoi, Iori and Hibiki should be way smaller than Haruka, Makoto and the Twins for example.
Not that it's a major problem, but the heights aren't accurate in relation to one another.

First let me say, they all did a great job on the costumes.
Second, idolm@ster is a very, complicated thing to cosplay from. Many people have it in their heads of how the girls would look irl, and many stand by that. That being said, I don't feel as if any of these girls "fit the part". The costumes look great, hey they are even in a group. But what it comes down to is, do you really look like the character? I realize we aren't all kawaii anime girls, but .. lemme point some stuff out.

Makoto's face is.. weird looking. Too chubby.
Haruka's face.
Iori why dafuq are you so tall? You don't look loli at all.
Yayoi, Ami, Mami. Their faces. Actually every bodies face turns me off.
I realize not everybody can get the true character down, but srsly..
Their faces don't compliment what the character looks like at all.
Really, I don't think people should cosplay Idolm@ster, since usually 99% of the time the cosplayers facial structure screws the whole thing up.

What's interesting to note is that most of these heights would just be impossible to try and organize. All of these girls are still relatively "short' by north american standards. Takane is the tallest and she's only 5'6. The shortest (Yayoi) is 5'6". And the average height of the group is just barely 5'2. To be real honest, at least in the OP picture the Makoto nailed it in terms of looking nearest in-character. Disregarding the given issues of limitations already mentioned not all of them are bad from a distance. Ami/Mami/Miki in particular.

What brings them down is that the portrayal of character is not accurate enough (The Takane is just... off) Quality > quantity, if you can't handle your character's personality well (Or do you even know the personality at the 1st place?) it really shows to others that you are jumping on the bandwagon only.
