Yes, it's actually a bad thing. Hoops are only used in western fashion. The other person who made this outfit also used a western silhouette (she made a sort of fantasy-type bodice) and it looked really stupid as a result. Whether you're making a historically-accurate outfit or something that looks like it's out of Fushigi Yugi, the dress should be one piece with many layers; not a bodice and a separate skirt with a hoop underneath.


Separate question for CGL: why are things like Dynastystuck suddenly culturally insensitive when people have been cosplaying Asian-fantasy outfits like Fushigi Yugi etc for years? Is this just more social justice warrioring or is this artist specifically doing something wrong?

You're probably not going to get anywhere close to the same volume as the art since that's really stylized, but if you add a few floor-length layers of skirts you'll get something closer to the grandeouse look that you're going for. The shape of the skirt will be big, just not a perfect hooped cone.

Hey cgl! I don't really post here all that often, so I apologize for anything dumb sounding. I plan on cosplaying the Dolorosa soon, I am experienced with sewing however I am inexperienced with dying fabric. I am having difficulty finding green and black striped fabric so I was going to just get black and white striped fabric and dye it green, but I want to use a heavy weight knit for the skirt. I have heard stretchy materials don't dye well, so do you have any recommendations to get this to dye as well as possible, or should I consider using something non-stretchy?

If it's a synthetic fabric, there's actually a dye designed to dye it.
