If you don't actually like the manga, why the fuck would you want to cosplay it? The artist has other works with cool costumes you can make, and JoJo fans in general tend to be super-hardcore. You won't get shit for not really liking it; you'll get disappointed looks on faces that were lighting up in glee to see someone cosplaying something they love, ESPECIALLY if you pick an arc after 3.

If you do actually like an arc it's fine, but please don't be another cosplayer making JoJo outfits to be different.

>> No.6647805

>>6647800
It can't be helped, there's people just like this in the /toy/ threads that just buy the figurines because they look cool, they don't even read/watch the series and some don't even like it...

It rustles my jimmies too, but people are free to like or dislike what they want, and if they have the money for it there's nothing to be done about it.

>> No.6647817

>>6647805
I just wish some of the people who just like the looks if the art would consider making cosplay of some of Araki's non-JoJo art. Alex Rider covers, SOUL'd OUT's Catwalk, Lives of Eccentrics, Gorgeous Irene, the illustrations of other things he's done for Ultra Jump, etc etc etc. yeah it's not as easy to find this stuff unless you know a really hardcore Araki fan, but it'd be so much better.

I'm glad more people legitimately like JoJo and want to cosplay it, but I'm a little afraid of JoJo becoming a fad for cosplayers who want to make something out of awful fabric in horrible colors, especially seeing how many JoJo groups have won at masqs lately.

>> No.6647820

Ugh, I'm still trying to figure that out because I will NOT skip on that detail. There are some silver hip hop grills going for about $30. The problem then becomes writing "GO! GO! ZEPPELI". So far I'm thinking maybe a non-toxic 3D glue or paint. It needs to stick to the teeth but also not kill me. Any ideas?

>> No.6647837

>>6647831
Hmm.. I think it may need to end up being one of those details that you pop in for photos/photoshoot times and forego just for walking around the convention, but that way seems ok to me. The only thing I would be wary about is your saliva dissolving the paint/glue, which would lead to a big (and I imagine bad tasting) mess.

That's what happens when there's an anime adaptation. And the series has gotten very popular because of it and ASB. Don't expect it (fanbase I mean, with casuals/aspies/weeaboos) to get Hamesteak levels of terrible but if part 3 gets animated it's going to be a rough ride for the hardcore Jojo fans.

The ebay seller basically asked me to send both of the leggings back so I did. Eventually after about a week I got identical leggings in the post and started making the headscarf and bracers straight away. It was still a little annoying that it happened though.

Looks good. When I did Gyro years back, I went Araki nuts with color and went with green hair. I swore there was a cover with it, but I was wrong. I found matching green lipstick, which I also used to draw on his beard. It worked, as I also drew on other features giving myself a very manga look. Jojo cosplay allows crazy colors and benefits from them. The trousers were purple along with the cape, the armor was black with silver balls. Belt buckle I hammered out of aluminum (I'm a machinist by trade) and sold on Ebay after the convention for $300 to some guy in Russia.
For the teeth, what I did was take two black mouth guards, attached copper foil to them (was adhesive backed), and carefully cut out the letters and sections to make it look like individual teeth. Came out really nice, and showed up well. The copper foil tape you can get anywhere, check the plumbing section of Lowes. They should have aluminum tape too, if that's the colors you're going for. I don't know, I always figured he had gold teeth in the comic but I guess 'official' is silver?
For the person asking about the hat, thick felt works great. It's what I used, and if you can't make the hat, find a cheap Stenson and go with that. I've used it also for a Kamen Rider Skull cosplay (the guy under the suit, the Chief) and it holds up well even with giant cuts in it.
Good luck with your cosplay. Gyros were very common here in Italy for Jojo cosplay. What's the Jojo scene like elsewhere?

I think the Jojo scene in America seems to be pretty region dependent? West coast seems to have a good collection of jojo cosplayers, with a few others scattered here and there. Katsucon had a scattering of cosplayers (a couple from part 1, a Jotaro, and then some Steel Ball Run,) and I'm sure Otakon will have more.

Are there any Jojo characters that could qualify for being easier or beginner level cosplay when it comes to making their costumes? I love the series, but I've just never cosplayed before and my sewing skills are rather basic (which I could probably improve by practicing or reading a guide book, I was also given some old 70s clothes pattern packets I could play around with...).

Parts 1-3 have some fairly simple outfits if you're not doing artbook or cover versions, but you run into the issue of not being beef mclargehuge enough to really pull them off.

Part 4 has some simple costumes, but that's when Araki really started adding tons of accessories to the outfits.

5 and later is when the difficulty really ramps, IMHO.

-Jotaro if you can get sewing help (3 or 4, 6 is right out)
-Koichi
-Yukako
-Rohan's outfit when he meets Reimi
-Rohan's sweater vest outfit from Rohan At The Louvre
-Josuke if you have help modding the pattern
-Kira if you buy a suit, paint the shirt and tie, and make the accessories
-Narancia (the easiest part 5 outfit in my opinion)
-Abbacchio if you have a bit of help
-Squalo and Tiziano if you mod the designs a bit (shirt and pants instead of jumpsuits), could be done cutting and hemming thrift store clothes
-Emporio (no sewing required really)
-Pucci would be a challenge but it's feasible with help
-see above for Foo Fighters
-Johnny Joestar
-Dr Ferdinand
-Ringo Roadagain if you aren't making your own gun belt
-if you have someone to walk you through, MAYBE Valentine
-Lucy Steel can be closet-modded
-Yasuho Hirose can also be closet-modded

There might be a few others but I'd feel comfortable giving any of these to a beginner, with a bit of help. The real problem in JoJo is shit that LOOKS simple but will fuck your shit up with hidden difficulty (Doppio, Mista, Hermes, several of Rohan's outfits, Dio, etc) because they look easy and then are not. Stay away from the sweaters.

But whatever you cosplay should be no problem. Jojo is a big comic in Italy, but Japanese comics in general are pretty huge.

Also, when sewing sweater knit, you might have to put masking tape on the edge to keep it from stretching out of place while you sew. I had that problem with Doppio something fierce. Why does JoJo have so much batshit sweater trim anyway?!

what you can do on the indents is make a wash - thin down your paint with a lot of water - and then just kind of drag it into the indents. It should collect in the low spots, and you can wipe off any that gets on the high spots before it dries. That will keep it from looking TOO dark as well. If you just try to paint it in with straight paint, it'll look less shadowy and natural.

Thanks. I definitely look into some of your advice. My belt is just super sculpy but I'll probably make a mold and resin cast it in the future so I can make duplicates for other Gyros.
I have some family in Italy but they're all my father's cousins so I doubt any of them would be into JoJo or comics for that matter. I live in Texas and Part 7 is probably the most popular JoJo but parts 1-3 are strong favorites and showing up more because of the game/anime/nostalgia factor.

Here is some is my heavily WIP Gyro thus far. I have a fair amount to go but it's shaping up bit by bit. The shirt is satin yes. I am aware of how terrible of a fabric it is but after heavy consideration I felt like it had the fabric mimicked the video game color's cartoony sheen very closely and I am fairly happy with the results. Worst case I can always use it as a pattern to redo it with pleather/vinyl later. The wig as I've said before still needs styling but I love its color and volume. The hat I am going to fix to fit the wig better as it gets a bit tight and bends. I could go on but I think I am at least on the right track. If you have any tips/criticism/questions though I would love to hear your insight cgl. My next step is going to involve ping pong ball halves, expanding foam, and metallic blue auto primer to finish the shirt.

>> No.6684007

>>6683758
I actually don't hate the satin, though I'm curious what it would look like under more natural lighting - I'm assuming you used a decent quality one though, at least?

Even good quality vinyl, unless its super matte, is going to look shiny under a bad flash, so I think the satin could potentially work... I would just make sure that you don't do the cape or pants out of shiny material, that would probably be overkill.

In all seriousness though, just make sure the fabric is similar in color to his hair (unless you're doing like, part 6 Jotaro, there's a lot more contrast in art of that one,) and either use clips to keep the hat it, or just sew it directly to the wig. I'm planning a pre-timeskip Erina and I'd like to hear /cgl/'s opinion on how to draft certain parts of her outfit.

Sleeves aside (which I have figured out), the white dress doesn't seem to be difficult at all, but I really don't know what's the best way to go about the blue dress: should I make the front panel+2 back panels with lighter blue fabric and then sew on large stripes for the darker part? Or should I use fabric paint? Not gonna lie, I'm using this as a costume to get back into cosplay and my main intent is to enjoy the con and take pictures of other cosplayers, so while I want to look good I also don't mind taking shortcuts.

If the cure anon doesn't mind, an Erina dump would help too.

It depends on your skill. I think the "stripes" are probably really seam lines! But seriously I don't want to draft the pattern for that many pieces, so I think it'd probably make more sense to topstitch down some very thin middy braid or (what I'm doing) make pin tucks. The back bow is like a lolita dress with non removable waist ties, so look up some of their patterns.

If you want to look at that particular dress in the manga, it's based off the dress she wears when Dio kisses her.

>> No.6700964

Honestly, I think they look more like seams, but no way would I want to make that dress out of a bunch of individual strips like that. Fabric paint would work, but you'll have to make them extremely thin and extremely even.

I agree, they're seam lines. Please don't paint them on, it will look terrible. I would make the dress out of a series of panels, two each forming a point all the way around, then coming up into a separate strap/bustline piece at the top. >> No.6701040

>>6700964
Yes, I am aware that they're seam lines, but I don't think I have the skill or the time to develop the skill to draft a pattern with so many panels. If I were to enter this in a competition I would totally do it, but at this point I'm probably going to try making pin tucks like >>6700961 suggested, I hadn't thought of that. And yeah, I'll use bias tape for the white border. Thanks a lot everyone!

>> No.6701059

>>6701040
really it wouldn't be that hard of a pattern, the dress is fairly shapeless so all you would need is to take the circumference of the top, and then divide it by the amount of stripes you have, do the same to the bottom, and you'd have the sizing for the top and bottom edges of your pieces. shaping the top hem could be done afterwards

That said, pintucks would work too.

If Giorno Giovanna was walking around with a stand named Yellow Event, it would probably ruin the magic that Araki made.

You have too much faith in the RIAA and their lawers, anon.

Exactly this. The only case of a character with a name that's close to a non-common noun in Guilty Gear is probably Axl Low, and the name is different enough that it wouldn't be contestable (despite the likeness). Maybe Zappa, though.

And to be fair though there are a number of attacks that are pretty specific names, but they're not really noticeable enough within the game to count I guess (ie All Guns Blazing, Kickstart My Heart, etc).

Dubs are for scum. Are you scum, anon?

The anime has such a good cast of veteran and new seiyuu you should just watch it with subs. I seriously doubt if it ever gets a dub it'll match in quality.

In fact despite the anime having mediocre animation the acting more than makes up for it.

>> No.6703469

>>6703434
>>6703426

The point still stands. The cast is mainly from Europe and the US in the first two parts. There is a solid chance the dub could be great.

Look at Baccano. Everyone loved the sub when it first came out cause it was legitimatly good. However the dub is now considered the go to version due to the setting and cast.

>> No.6703505

>>6703469
What point? That there's one english dub out of hundreds that managed to be decent when it comes to accents? Not to mention it was done by Funimation, they're not the company that's going to license the JJBA anime if it gets licensed in the US. It'll most likely be Viz.

>>6702697
If Prince wasn't so cranky and could actually sit down and read JJBA he'd love that shit, his MC is the most fabulous of them all

>> No.6703530

>>6703505
The point is that the chances of a good dub happening is not as distant as you think mainly because it would make sense to see Europeans and Americans speaking English. Hell in the manga we even got period slang and many of Joseph's catchphrases were said in English

Even assuming they get a voice cast that is as good as the original (which is doubtful, Koyasu-Dio and Sugita-Joseph have got to be some of the best voice acting jobs I have heard in ANY language,) you still have to deal with the issue of localizing names in a way that won't get them sued, but don't sound silly, piss off fans, OR piss off Araki.

it's kind of my opinion that characters that have a real delinquent, bombastic way of speaking never really translate well to an English dub - English VAs can never seem to muster up the intensity required of some characters. I mean, go look at the english dub of like, TTGL. Its really not bad, but the acting just lacks the excitement of the Japanese. And I'm PRETTY SURE in an english dub of Jojo, that problem would be huge with Joseph.

Generally I'd agree, but since we were mentioning GG earlier- I actually REALLY liked the dubbing job of Sin in GG2:Overture that Yuri Lowenthal did. It was one of the only good dubbing jobs in the game.

Dubbing Sugita rarely seems to go super well though, relatedly Ragna being a case in point. Dio is probably undubbable too, deep badass voices don't sound as good in English (see again: Sol in Overture..) especially when they need to ham it up without being silly.

Dub Kanji was amazing.

For an example of a series there's Cromartie which is reguarded as a dub on par/equale to the sub.

Localization is a legit point you bring up but wouldn't that still happen in the sub version if it was brought to the US?

>> No.6704210

>>6704189
Dub Kanji does rock. I mean, I'm not saying it doesn't happen, there's always exceptions. I guess I just don't have high hopes.

As far as sub localization... I don't even see it getting licensed. They're already making the blu rays/game accessible to a western audience (subs on the blu ray, no region protection on the game.)

it could but you are GOING to have to add in extra hair for his side thing, if the Jareth is lacking in one thing is it extra hair up front. It has plenty of thickness in the back, but there's no way you can do the bangs properly with what you have there.

So make sure you buy some wefts; the short wefts should do.

I would almost think you might be able to get one of the curly clips and just take out the clip part and use the hair.. its up to you though. Its a pretty vibrant color to try to get with sharpies.
