Do people cosplay AT characters on how closely they resemble certain characters, or do you just cosplay whoever you'd like? Because I'm kiiiinda stuck.

So I don't want to start any debates or anything, but I'm curious.
My friend and her girlfriend want to do their first cosplay with me, and they want to do Adventure Time. Being at least 6" taller than everyone else, it was decided I would be Lady Rainicorn.
What I was wondering was if it would be considered offensive for someone like me (super duper white as you can get) to wear a hanbok? My half-Korean friend says no, but I really don't want to be attacked by SJW's
I like what the cosplayer in pic related did, but I was thinking of doing a more extravagant, royal hanbok.

need a bit of advice. I'm going to PAX East as Marceline, and I plan on going to the concert Friday which means I'll be there around... 16 hours straight? Walking around, sitting down, touching things, participating in stuff, etc. I've done some research into bodypaint for the gray skin, but I'm pretty sure it would be impossible to get something that could last that long. So I've got a couple of options potentially ->

I was originally planning on going with sidecut!marceline because, well, I have a sidecut and my natural hair color is black (shorter than hers though, so I was going to get extensions). In that episode she's wearing a tank top/dress thing. I could potentially switch that out for one of her long-sleeved outfits, minimize the amount of coverage I'd need (basically just face, neck, and hands), try and reapply once or twice throughout the day, and hope for the best. But would it look weird to have the hair from one outfit with the clothes from another?

Second option is that I just... don't do gray. It's a possibility but I'm afraid of looking sloppy/getting hate. This is my first cosplay, actually. If it is impossible to do paint, are there any other things I can do to make it look better? Possibly some corpse-ish makeup or something? Any help would be really, really appreciated, thank you guys.

I use a blend of Parsdise AQ in Storm Cloud and white. Apply with a damp brush, let it dry and done. It dries matte, won't rub off and lasts a long time. When you mix it it'll look lighter than what it dries as so mix it lighter than the shade you actually need.
It washes off easily with soap and water too. It does take practice applying though.
I always premix some and put it in a little pill case to bring with me in case I need a touch up too.

If you go with a long sleeved shirt you can just use paint like Ben Nye or something like that. But for short sleeved/more skin showing, you either use PAX since that will NOT come off easily. That, or make armsocks which are a bit tricky to make.

My Marceline used ghoul gray, white, and some peacock blue (Ben Nye creme colors) and got a rather accurate and nice shade for Marceline. Having just gray is fine too but it wouldn't hurt to go a bit further with a slight tint. We found that straight up gray was too dark for canon Marceline colors as well, so that's why the white was thrown in.

Just a suggestion, but I think you can do the same with gray+white and a dash of either blue or green (whatever you feel is more accurate).

The characters all have a canon eye colour. They're just done as black dots because it's a simple style of drawing. For example, it's been confirmed by one of the lead character designers that Finn's eyes are blue.
