Indie lolita and jfash thread?

New thing from htt. First thing she's made I'm kind of tempted by because it doesn't have a derpy looking anime face on it.

I really really don't like the look of this print... it looks... transparent... if that makes any sense? Like it looks like they took a low resolution of the print and enlarged it poorly to me... It also looks way too corny and the colors (for sweet lolita which has a very defined color pallet for pastels to match up with accessories) look slightly off and too 'bright'. It just looks like a costume to me.

>>6658869
I have one of these skirts (bought used) at least another print she did and the skirt is not worth the price she charges... flimsy, super light weight cotton with a cheapo liner. That's it. And I think she charges 75 or something for these?

I've heard mixed reviews. The quality of the work is always good, but the quality of the materials varies. Sometimes, she uses a strange jersey knit material apparently?

>> No.6659499

>>6659459
Her stitches are straight and there are no construction flaws, the fabric quality is so-so, but her items have a very unflattering cut in general and even with custom sizing it seems there's a lot of fitting issues, so many end up resold.

My 2 skirts from her were imperfect, but by no means bad. Slightly unstraight stitching in one area of a hem but no hanging threads or unfinished bits at all. Certainly worth what I paid.
The lace she uses isn't impressive so you may want to skip it.

I would definitely but from er again. Her pieces look much better in person than in her photos.

>> No.6659507

>>6659459
I just got a skirt from her in the mail today. It's a cotton printed skirt.

The good:
Even though it's printed on cotton, the image on it is very crisp in person. The colors might be a little more faded than if the skirt had been made in another material, but I'd say it's still good.

The sewing is good and neat. Straight lines on the seams, no crazy loose threads, etc.

The cotton outside is kind of stiff but the skirt is lined with softer material.

The bad:

She used tulle on the bottom of it, and I really dislike it because it's really stiff and scratchy. It was poking my legs so bad after I tried it on that I decided to put on some sweat pants.

It was a really cheap skirt though, which is what prompted me to buy it, so I think it's good overall. I'm sure her discounted pieces would probably be even better. I think she needs to take some better pictures of her items though. My skirt honestly looks better in person than in the images she has.

Agreed. I think that's one of the things that bothers me about a lot of indie prints. Some are really good at thinking how the print will work with the construction, but most just don't plan that far in advance. the structure and the print need to complement each other.

Also, why do so many use spoonflower and insist on printing black? It never looks good. Use any other color, please.

What would you guys suggest as a reasonable price for skirts and headbows? I'm not looking to open a strictly indie lolita shop per-se. The shop I'm setting up is focused on wearable things that I've illustrated, so accessories, tights, and other items. I've been sewing for about 12 years (I'm by no means professional but I compete in master level craftsmanship if that counts for anything). I'm considering making some prints of various styles with my artwork and just making a few free-size skirts (like Meta's fully-shirred skirts). Spoonflower costs about $20 per yard, plus there's the cost of trim/notions and time invested. I want to try to make things that look really nice and are well constructed but I'm worried that $100 for a skirt would be asking too much, and it wouldn't even be worth my time since I'd only be making about $20-30 of it. I suppose it depends on the print and craftsmanship quality. Opinions?

Ok you need to ask yourself if this is going to be a career or not. If it is, you're going to have to deal with losing money for the first two years while you build your customer base up.

If it's going to be a hobby... take REALLY nice pictures and marketing the fuck out of yourself.

in both instances, look into investing in contracting the work. Costume sewing and actual garment construction are completely... completely different (think about how this is an item that has to survive every day wear instead of a costume worn maybe 1-3 times a year for a couple hours each time). Most cosplayers I know don't even know what type of thread to use for different aspects of a garment or even what brand to buy for quality (Metrosene Plus is my go to).

I would pay 75-150 for a nice skirt, no problem. But it has to be worth it... where are you going to get your fabric and notions? obviously not jo-anns/hancock.

She is in my comm. She is not strictly a Lolita designer but I think she went to school for fashion so she's more "designery" than some of the other people mentioned in the thread even if her stuff is not as Lolita. I think "inspired" makes sense for that jumperskirt in her etsy - you couldn't really wear it in a Lolita coord. I don't think she has been a Lolita for long (though she looks just fine at meetups so that is not meant to be a putdown at all, I think she knows what she's doing but maybe isn't exclusively interested in the style). That riding coat would be amazing in a Lolita coord though.

It wouldn't be a career. I have a good job right now, and it's something I do on the side for extra money and more for a hobby. Namely I'm looking into doing artist alley tables with an online shop. The main deal is that I'd be making original prints from my own art. So the price would namely be for the print, not so much for the fact it's a plain old normal skirt.

I figured skirts would be easy to start with, to at least build up a name, and then expand from there into offering jumperskirts and what not.

I was planning on starting out by doing a few skirts of a print (3-5), and putting them up for sale, not so much in doing straight up commissions. I work a full-time job as well as a part time job that I do from home. I don't have tons of free time to work on them. So pre-making them seems like the best option for me, that way there's no waiting period and they're ready to ship when ordered.

As far as laces go, I'm considering some TaoBao shops (laces.taobao, etc), rather than going to Joanns or wherever. I'm pretty picky about lace quality.

At any rate, here's a sketch of one of the prints I'm working on (it's come along further than the sketch but I'm not comfortable posting what I have done yet). I was considering submitting it to Oojia's print contest (you might've seen it in one of those threads). But I decided it would be better just to do it myself.

Maybe I'll offer the fabric up on Spoonflower for periods of time too like some others do.

D'awwwh, that's such a lovely print. Your business plan seems pretty sound, too. If your main selling point is the fabric, and you're not planning on spending lots of time on construction, you might want to consider options for printing other than Spoonflower, though. If you have the fabric up on Spoonflower, and you're making fairly plainly structured skirts, quite a large chunk of your potential customers are more likely to just buy the fabric rather than the skirts you've made. Look into getting it done with a private company - it'll be a bit more expensive, but the fabric quality will be better, the print will be sharper and probably won't fade as much (may well be machine washable, which is always good). They also tend to do bulk discounts, and have support staff to help you with the process, and check your print before and after it's printed, and nobody else will be able to make the product.

Just out of interest, are you primarily and artist or a textile designer?

At the moment it's a hobby. We are working on a career. But at the moment it is impossible because both of us
work full time. So we just have our free time and the weekend to work. I wouldn't say hand painted/printed is amateur work. It takes a lot of practice to be perfect. And it is easier to offer customization. And customization is the next point, we don't offer massproduced clothes if anybody wants another lace, fabric color or another skirt lenght, we can handle it. We started our business last year, so we can't fall into a designer pitfall. But thanks for your criticism.

Well the unicorn one looks just like a hot mess to me. So for me, the design is just, NOT my style and the unicorn applique/whatever looks tacky. I just really don't like the look of the dress, it looks too ruffly and just would be really hard (for me obviously) to pull off. The red JSK is photographed badly and looks wrinkled and is hanging really weird on the dummy which already makes me not want to buy it.

And I know you are in europe, but I've never even seen you advertise on the FB comms or egl at all (both international communities) so I had no idea you existed... now if you are doing enough business that you don't want to market yourself more and stretch yourself too thin, I get that. However if you're not, you really need to market yourself more I think.

Also, are you sewing everything? I think you need to consider contracting the work in the future if you start getting more orders, this is how other bigger indie brands keep up the supply.

Hi, the designer asked for feedback. I provided feedback as a customer browsing the site. I even prefaced my opinion of the unicorn dress as my own opinion (and saying things like 'for me obviously').

She asked why the dress isn't selling stating 'maybe the price is the issue' and then asked for feedback. I provided feedback as a potential customer on viewing the dress. I did not say to change the dress or take it down. I simply gave my opinion based on what I thought first viewing the dress and why I would not buy it. Which is exactly what the designer asked for.

Obviously she knows (or I would hope she does) that one opinion is not right or wrong and she's just looking for feedback, which I offered. Now lets here some more feedback to help her out? Because I know my opinion isn't 100% shared by everyone in this threa.d.. someone else posted above asking where they could buy the unicorn jsk. But it doesn't look like it sold, so what are the other reasons it's not selling even to people who admitted liking it? I'm sure that would also be great feedback for the designer.

This is also the first time I have responded to you fyi, the other anon is not me.

I'm primarily the artist, but I can sew. I've done cosplay for about 11 years and I compete in master division (though I don't compete anymore as all the conventions I attend now are ones I staff, and I pretty much left cosplay for Lolita). But I'm pretty confident with my construction. I'm not an expert, professionally trained seamstress, and I think my prices would reflect that, so the bigger selling point would be the print. I'd love to get this print done with shiny gold detailing like some of AP's pieces though. Hnnngg. I'll have to look into that.

>> No.6668119

>>6668079
I'm not doubting your sewing, don't worry. I'm just saying; if your construction is simple, you need high quality fabric, and don't make your fabric readily available at the same prices you get it by putting it on Spoonflower.

Whilst shiny gold print is lovely, it has to be done by hand, a metre at a time, with either metallic binder or foil, both of which are going to cost you quite a lot of money. You can do it yourself, but you'll want to get a screen exposed, which for a metre long screen you're looking at around £600, and it's likely to block up if you use it a lot or forget to wash it out properly. You can cut stencils out of paper or kodatrace, but if you're making a lot of fabric, you don't really want to be doing that. It's also hard to screen print over digital print, because the fabric will warp and it's very hard to line the design up.

I'm not trying to shoot you down or anything, just giving you some things to think about. It can be hard for artists to jump straight into textiles without much training in it.

>> No.6668124

>>6668079
like I said before, costume sewing is NOT garment sewing. Just be aware of that.

>> No.6668191

>>6668119
Ah okay thanks. I was wondering about how the gold printing was done. It might be out of the question. I wasn't aware it was screen printed.

If I did decide to put it on spoonflower, it would be for a limited amount of time, sort of how Rouge Aerie did it. It would be an option if I'm just not able to make tons of them to sell and it's in high demand. But I'll see what happens.

>>6668124
It's not, but there is an overlap depending on what you're making. When I learned to sew, I was taught not to just wing it and make it look like it's supposed to from the outside. Instead, to make it presentable as a realistic, believable garment. There is overlap when it comes to materials and technique. The difference with costumes and what is considered costume, is something that is to be worn a few times and thrown away. Very little time put into detail. But when you are competing, it's those details and attention that make you go from "meh" to winning awards, especially when there are several in your division competing. I found that competing and working hard on craftsmanship has made me look at different methods than just running things quickly through a sewing machine on a basic stitch on broadcloth without considering linings, facings, special techniques, what sort of seams and hems to use, and just calling it a day.

>> No.6668220

>>6668191
Yeah, you can't put metal dust in a digital printer, it'll jam too much.

Ah, like, put it up after you've made all you're going to make? Yeah, I can see that. But then, people might know you'd do that next time, and wait for the fabric to go up instead of buying what you've made. It's up to you as to whether you want loads of people using your print and you not getting a lot for it.

Also, I think anon was referring to durability issues. You can do as much fancy stitching as you like, win an award for it, and then it might fall apart the next day, which is what a lot of costumes tend to do. Of course, you may well have that all covered already, but I think that's the point anon was trying to make.

>> No.6668280

>>6668220
Yeah that's a good point to consider.

I've never had issues with anything I've made falling apart (except for maybe the first few things I made as a beginner), but every piece I've made from 2005 onwards still holds up. I would make things to wear mulitple times for several years, and I'd machine launder them (when possible) with no problems. If I hadn't lost like 50+lbs I could still wear them.

That print was commercially available, and given that it had scallops printed on it, it is pretty much guaranteed that the designer is going to use that in their design. You can't just have a scallop hem skirt with nothing under it, it looks choppy and unfinished so pretty much everyone who used that fabric had some sort of floating ruffled under the scallops. Hardly plagiarism. Several taobao companies and loli seamstresses have used this fabric with pretty much the same design.

The unicorn looks out of place, like it's slapped on for the sake of it. I think I would prefer that dress design without the unicorn print.

For the print itself, it looks like it is cheaply printed on...I don't know the technical printing terms sorry but you should look at how brands, indie or japanese, create their prints. in lolita, printed matter should look more sophisticated, detailed, and currently yours looks like it belongs on a very...casual t-shirt, if i must say.

Also not an anon from above, but re the unicorn printing method; you'll want to get a screen exposed in future rather than painting it on by hand. It'll allow you to produce a lot of prints very quickly, and because the pigment goes on through a fine mesh, it's even and gives a better finish. The layers will also be slightly thinner, so it won't look as 't-shirty'. You have to be aware though that pigment binder is always going to look a little off in such a large block.

What kind of fabric are you using? To me it looks like silk, which requires much more sophisticated printing methods. The way binder works is that it sits on top of the fabric, rather than being absorbed by it, so the fabric looks/feels plastic-y where the print is. (This is also why you can't dry-clean pigment prints such as Puppet Circus). You should consider either changing your printing method or changing the fabric you're printing on so that the print and the fabric go together a little better.

Well, that's my take on it, anyway.
