I offered her $150.00 to make me a wig, but that was not a fixed about. I would pay out more of a nicer wig and dish out even more for fastest shipping.

We were going to the same con, I so arranged to meet her at her hotel. Her and her buddy was super nervous for some reason, mumbling something about having to use hairpins to hold down the back. Before I could get in a word in or even look at the wig, she vanished. Like..ran out.

That was because she gave me a piece of shit. Like, you couldn't fix it. It was so bad. I stood there, really getting a chance to look at it and burst into tears. Instead of saying, look I can't do it or there isn't enough time. Later, she sent me a message saying she would return $30 bucks for shipping. I didn't even response. I was...so upset. I had a costume I spent $800 bucks on and no wig. I tried to contact her with the number she gave me, but I was being avoided. Like an idiot, I listened when she asked me to "gift" her the money through paypal. She was pretty insistent upon that. I had to just wipe my hands clean of the whole matter, because I foresaw this turning into a huge matter. I think I still have the pictures too on my phone.

Just seeing her damn face rustles my jimmies.

She probably asked you to gift her the money because otherwise, Paypal takes a chunk out of it that neither seller nor buyer will probably want to pay for. That part wasn't a scam, just a pretty normal paypal practice.

Aside from that, I don't really have comments on that situation.

Oh man, it's you again! that wig looks ridiculously awesome. Much better than 96% of this board could ever manage. Sonteens done tons of amazing commissions with no complaints, all her wigs look great.

Make your own wig next time if you've got such high standards.

Also, learn to paypal. Gift payments are to avoid fees that either you or she has to pay for. She really just saved you money.

I was suppose to be villetta nu. The wig is suppose to be grey. It was washed out purple and blue. It's suppose to be a ponytail wig, it had bald spots all in the back and edges, like the entire cap was showing. Glue was used I believe to pull everything into one, parts had clumped. Now...the ponytail, oh man. She cut the wig, only to to extend the length of it with a hunk of hot glue....so hot glue was all over the entire length of the ponytail.

The kicker. This was for my anniversary, she was all sweet and nice. She knew was this was for and she swore up, down and sideways that she wouldn't fail me. That she would pull out all the stops for me.

She could have purchased a ponytail separately to begin with instead of trying to go..oh crap, I didn't get the right length. Let me try this out.

The entire thing from the cut down to the end had hot glue strings all over it. it was rock solid because she brushed glue through the end of the bony tail to keep the hairs together. It was like a rock. And the color isn't correct, its a light blue with faint purple streaks. Not grey.

Er.. not really. Viletta's ponytail wouldn't work with a clip on (if that's what you mean by separately?), it needs to be either gathered straight from the wig somehow, or more likely stubbed and added back on with wefts.

The color, unless you were specific with her about it, I can see too. Her hair has a bluish purple cast a lot of the time. But if these were things discussed beforehand there's no excuse.

>> No.6653228

Yeah, there probably could've been a lot of ways to style that wig. Color is tricky because of a lot of reasons, and the character's hair color isn't very consistent from anime stills to figures either, but you're the one with the wig, not us.

This is pretty interesting. I shouldn't be apologizing because I have nothing to do with this, but I do feel badly that you ended up getting a bad product. Thanks for being honest with us, in any case.

I would have rather she used a clip-on, instead of what she did. Which was butcher the wig.

In fact, she was so familar with this character and was going through all this trouble to find the right shade. Because, I said her hair is grey and she went on to correct me what shade it was and she would make the best choice. "Don't worry anon, I've got this. Trust me."

What could she say? She had a month to do this wig and I paid extra for "rush order" since the Con was July 1st. I even offered to pay more $$ to get the fastest shipping available so the wig she purchased would get to her faster. I even offered more money, encase she needed it. I even gave her a tip.

I never annoyed her, allowing her to work in piece on the wig and if she really couldn't do it in time. She should have turned me down outright. But she didn't, she took my money and scammed me basically.

She KNEW what she did, because she high-tailed it out of the lobby with her friend. She was nervous as hell and ignored my phone calls afterwards.

I never said a bad thing about her or harassed her. This is the firsttime, how many year later I'm warning people about this wig commissioner.

She offered to refund me shipping, because I picked it up from her instead. But, that was just like a spit in the face. The best thing I could do was say, "This was $150.00 lesson learned."

Character commissioned : Nurse Joy from Pokemon (wig)

Timeline (how long your order took to process): April 1st, 2011 - 07/07/11. It was suppose to be here before the 6th.

Pros:

The only part I really like about my wig are the front portion of the bangs. I couldn't have asked for better. But as a whole process of commissioning through her, it was just a headache after headache. No other pros about it. She did over night the wig, with a tracking number. And she did ship the wig with a wig head.

Cons:

At first she seemed really quick to respond to any questions. The communication was great in the beginning. The only time though that I noticed to seem to get responses was when I prodded her over a note on DA. Things had slowed down. I had choose her because of word-of-mouth through a friend to do this commission. But I made her promise to do several things with this commission: 1. keep me updated once progress was made 2. take progress pics. Neither was done. Each time I poked her on DA to see how things were going, she always had some kind of excuse. Either she was too busy with wig commissions or conventions. I got sick of it. One note got kind of nasty to get the point across that this wig was promised to be by July, before my convention. Two weeks ago, she claimed that it was 2-3rds done after she threatened me to take my refund for my wig. I just wanted the wig. I've had so many issues with finding a commissioner that was able to handle this wig. She said that was fine so she will continue to work on it. Then last week, I saw her post about AX on DA. I noted her again due to that I still have not seen any progress pics or received anything from her on her end. She claimed that she sent it out on last Wednesday via priority mail.

It is still not here. I'm really upset right now. I have little faith that I'll get my wig on time for this con, and if I'll even get this wig at all. I've been waiting patiently since April 1st for my commission. If you are that too busy to do a commission, then why commission at all? Leave the excuses out of your business and just do your job like you were hired to do. Just take precautions if you approach her to do a commission for you.

Edited 7/7/11
Final Grade: D+
This is for the lack of correspondence, deadline that was missed by a day and a half and for breaking promises of not updating me with progress pictures throughout the entire process. This commissioner is too busy with life and yet she still takes on commissions. Just be cautious if approached by her. She does claim she is stopping commissions in September for good because of the "little pay" she gets for doing such.

Edit:

Update - she noted me on DA, after threatening for a refund. She claims that she's going to over night it and it should be here by noon tomorrow. I still doubt I'll see this wig.

Final Edit:

The wig came today. She had expressed mailed it. She expected me to pay for shipping on all the hassle I had to deal with. She barely met the deadline. She was too busy all the time to respond or work on my wig, when she had it since April. She did ship it with a wig head, thankfully. I am glad that she didn't even question not too.

As for the quality of the wig's grade:

I would give it an C. She had stubbed the back of the wig for the loops; but did not cover or closed them off. I will have to make something to go over them. It's pretty hideous other wise. The color is a bit darker then I originally wanted. There's a lot of uneven-ness throughout the side bangs. I will be trimming up those later my self.

Sadly this was for AX 2011, so its long over due. I tried to help on what I could do via paypal, they said I would have to bite the bullet for this one. But, this is great to know for the future. I cross my fingers that never happens again and if it does, that I can get my CC to do a chargeback.

Just a quick note, using your bank to do a chargeback runs the risk of getting you blacklisted from paypal.

Paypal will be out of pocket if this Sonteen person has already closed her account, plus paypal now wonders if the next time you pay something you actually mean it or if you'll do another chargeback, so it's likely they will blacklist you.

(I have to admit I don't have experience with this though -- I rely on paypal to buy a lot of stuff so I'm too scared to risk trying this even though I could re-sign up with a different credit card)

I think the problem with cosplay commissioners is that most of them are amateur hobbyist looking to pay for a way to pay for their hobby and not professionals. They have no real business sense, and do not really have the facilities or time to properly manage a decent business. They usually have a full-time job and/or school, and commissions are just a thing they do on the side.

I know a lot of people who have tried and failed when they got in over their head, myself included. It's not hard to do if you start out strong and do good work, because when the ball gets rolling you have a lot of customers and for most people they don't have the experience to know when to stop or say no.

I ended up taking on too much work, getting behind by one order and then it all spiralled out of control. When people do chargebacks you end up in the negative for money, and can't afford to send out other wigs because you're out materials. Late deadlines mean express shipping which means more money out of pocket. Before I knew it I was $3000 in debt with a lot of disappointed customers, and so screwed financially afterwards it took me a long time to pay them back.

It's really a stressful, overwhelming experience for most people and I'd say 90% of cosplayers are not equipped or experienced enough to handle it. Sonteen probably ran into the same thing, and learned her lesson the hard way too. The best thing you can do is quit while you're ahead- which at least she did. Some people like Limebarb just keep going forever.

I would've cried if I saw this also. That's $150 down the drain, you should've seriously considered a dispute. Anyone defending this garbage needs a reality check.

For wigs, I ended up starting to do them on my own after seeing what monstrosities can be made with even the "best". I'm too ridiculously OCD, so I ended up making my own wigs.

If you ever reconsider cosplaying Viletta, you should try to look up tutorials of ponytail-style wigs (Kukkii-san has one iirc). There's other cosplay commissioners out there that wouldn't fuck you over this bad, I'm thankful for your honesty.

I don't know about it being too late, I once had a wig commissioned for a convention in 2010 and I got a refund in late 2012 after following her on tumblr and sending her a few asks.
The wig kept getting delayed and at one point we agreed on doing an at-con-pickup. She avoided me the entire convention and never answered her phone. She promised me a refund afterwards but ended up unfriending me on facebook and not responding to my messages. I don't know what changed her mind when I decided to message her years later but she gave me my money back. It's worth a shot.

>my friends know her so I am more trusting
>her wigs look great, not worried
>begin to worry when she doesn't ask for my head measurements, says she can 'guess based off my picture'
>give them to her anyway
>3 months go by, only got a couple messages from her
>that's okay, I gave her plenty of time, I'm sure she's just spacing out the work on it
>2 months until the con
>hey there sonteen is my wig finished? I haven't seen any pictures
>she goes OH I was working on it last week I'll send you a pic
>takes her a week to send me a picture
>it looks fine from the picture, I'm mostly happy
>say that the bangs don't look quite right, could you fix them?
>yeah sure!
>1 month until the con, my deadline is in 2 days
>Hey... have you shipped the wig yet?
>OH I was going to ship it yesterday but <insert excuse here>
>Okay...
>She ships it out about 4 weeks before the con
>Okay, fine, whatever I didn't spend over $100 on this so as long as it gets here in time
>Gets to my house a week before the con
>Its in a huge box, excitedly open it
>The wig wasn't even reinforced in the box, no padding
>It was just taped to another smaller box inside it
>It had fallen over
>Put it on wig stand
>Manage to fix the parts that got damaged, looks okay
>I'm not sure what to think of it
>She didn't fix the bangs like I asked
>I put it on
>It doesn't fit right
> The bangs are too short
>The ponytail is unnecessary heavy, stuffed with god knows what, so it falls off my head
>Wig clips and pins don't help
>She teased the FUCK out of the back of the hair
>Ratty mess underneath, the top which was unteased barely covers it (i.e. the ratty hair was poking through)

>Ponytail covered in dried glue
>How the fuck do I even fix this

>Overall generally just looks BAD on me
>It looks okay on the wig head, which is what the picture she sent me was of (it on a wig head)
>But when I put it on, it looks HORRIBLE
>Makes me question if she tried it on to make sure it was comfortable and even wearable

>Think about messaging her but get backed up on con prep, I forget

>Get to the con
>Takes me and 3 friends 20 minutes to get the wig to actually stay on my head
>I should mention the character's hair isn't insane spikes or huge ponytails, this wig should not be heavy
>Finally get it on
>Only wear the costume which I slaved over for 3 months for 2 hours because the wig hurts to wear
>I have to hold my body in a certain position to keep the wig from slipping or poking my eyes
>Go back to the hotel room, have 2 friends help me remove all the bobby pins
>I used 21 pins to secure it. 21.
>Just put it on the wig form and decide fuck it lets just drink and have fun and forget about it
>At the end of the con I realize the wig got REALLY messed up by me just wearing it 2 hours
>Spend a day trying to fix it
>Nope

I haven't contacted her about it. I'm not sure I want to. I'm ashamed I wasn't more adamant on her sticking to the deadline and requesting more pictures. I could've done a dispute but it didn't cost that much in the long run and now its too late.

I'm planning on harvesting wefts from it and just buying my own wig and styling it.

Yes she commissions wigs. And that statement does not mention nor list anything about the wig in specific. For all I know, the wig may have been styled by the patron and then commissioned Sonteen for a wig after the fact that her initial wig failed. Now for whatever reason she has to shame Sonteen is beyond me, but that's just an assumption.

Back to the facts:
>A receipt that has no direct claim to what it is for beyond a wig commission. No statement, explanation, or note towards a specific wig styling or for a Viletta wig.
>Photos of a horribly styled wig.

This is all we have to go on. There's nothing here that actually proves, without a shadow of a doubt, that the wig shown was styled by Sonteen. No box with a return address, no shipping labels. Nothing. So unless she comes in here to say that "Yes, I styled this wig, it was poorly done, etc." There's nothing to believe here.

The other thing that gets me is that some people cannot understand that a commissioner's work can be inconsistent and still be made by them. Like some have been saying, when you bite off more than you can chew, your work suffers. Not all of it, but your work becomes inconsistent which means some pieces are amazing and others look like crap.

This reminds me of how Arda wigs works. Some people repeatedly get red-carpet treatment and never have a problem with the service or the products, others are not so lucky and get shit on with product quality, service, or sometimes both. Sadly, a lot of people don't realize that neither the people who've had perfect experiences and those with bad experiences are necessarily wrong. What it means is that their service is inconsistent, which can go back to "biting off more than you can chew".

I can totally, feasibly see both the OP and that Villeta wig being created by her given that she's been known to overbook and try to do too much.

As an ex-wig commissioner I can agree with this. I did a lot of great work, and if the timing was bad- a lot of mediocre work. I probably bombed one or two wigs as well. Sonteen shows all the signs of being someone who was at the end of her commission rope and struggling, because I did that all too before finally ditching the business because I couldn't handle it anymore.

>poor communication because too busy/intimidated/behind schedule
>barely meeting deadlines because schedule is overburdened
>lots of last minute work, some turns out great and some doesn't
>handing off a wig and praying to god the person is satisfied and hoping for the best when you know it's not great

There's a reason she shut her business down. Not only is it hard as fuck to do, but even the customers you do good with can be real assholes and drag your name through the dirt. I refunded a bunch of people and apologized when I realized I was shutting down and they never revoked their bad reviews and still talk trash to this day.

It's not so much that Arda was inconsistent rather than incompetent.
I can say, however, that they've improved significantly since I've bought wigs from them.

The trouble with my experience is that when I bought these wigs their descriptions were not a true match to some of their wigs, and this is also before they put out a warning that their wigs didn't properly fit smaller heads.
Obviously they're better about describing their wigs and photographing better these days since they've learned their lessons from customer complaints, but these issues were due to incompetence and not inconsistency. Just pointing that out.

Oh I've forgot to mention that the wigs that I bought that I've had complaints about hardly nobody ever buys now either because of those updated descriptions.
Mainly because they're actually very un-versatile wigs that can't be styled unless you go out of your way to modify them.

They do need some more sock pictures. But I find the best resource to be the customer gallery because you can actually see what some of those wigs look like worn, in different colors, and in con lighting. I recommend taking a peek at those. It's changed my mind about a lot of their wigs.

My problem with them is the 2 times I ordered wigs from them, I got the old first gen wigs when they were advertising the 2nd gen wigs that had fixed all the problems e.g. old wigs didn't have certain tops or rattier old fiber. I don't think that was fair at all. If they wanted to sell of older versions of wigs, fine, put a fucking 5% discount on them, they'd still sell. But when you're advertising 1 product and sending a mixture of either the new ones or old ones, it's not fair at all. I would tend to agree, but still Arda shouldn't have to depend on a gallery of customer images. It's nice to have it there, but they should have stock photos of each (or at least most) of the wigs in each style and color. It's really lazy..and imo reflects poorly on the company that they have so few stock images posted.

Also I despise how they put the wigs on the heads - the bangs especially always look super wonky and unappealing. If I was new to the cosplay community and didn't know anything about the company I wouldn't dare purchase anything from them based off of the images they have listed.

I've also had some bad experiences with the actual wigs, but even before that these things peeved me.

I'm an anon from earlier and I've had experiences with both their Eowyn and Jeannie (sp?) wigs.

The first one I ever bought was a baby blue Jeannie wig. This was before they added the note about having to modify the wig yourself for it to fit correctly. I got the wig and it just wasn't good. I could see the netting where they had pulled the hair back into a ponytail, and the parts on the side of the wig looked like they had been matted down with extra fiber to cover the wig base. It was very bizarre.
Oh and not to mention the thing didn't fit me, and they gave no measurements so it came as a surprise. The wig is unwearable.

They finally updated the Jeannie and basically warned anyone that if they wanted it and had smaller heads then they would have to modify it. Oh and I've heard the newer gen of this wig is nicer too. But still, it would have been nice at the time to have been compensated for an unusable wig.

Eowyn was another gem I couldn't wear.
I had been looking into a casual, skin top wig that I could wear on the street in NYC. I ordered this wig with the understanding that the top could be parted and styled. What Arda failed to mention was that the bangs were fixed, and looked pretty fake to boot. To my horror whenever I wore this wig without a hat of some sort, everyone could tell it was a wig. Even my dad who is wig-retarded thought it looked silly.

And as before with Jeannie they updated the wig description to mention the bangs issue. Of course it was well after the fact.

It just seems my beef with them could be avoided if they had described their wigs better and properly photographed them to begin with.

Which version of the Eowyn did you get? There are two to my knowledge, and I have to admit the first one had some... issues, since the skin top didn't extend all the way to the front. They updated the description for it later, and eventually fixed the skin top itself on future versions of the wig (and is pretty nice now), but it was kind of a big issue that the first iteration was described as a full skin top wig, and, well... wasn't.

Once I got the wigs home and examined them I was really disappointed. I bought a ferrari, a candy striper, and a claudia. For the ferrari whenever the bangs were combed to the side - even slightly you could see the mesh/cap. The entire hairline was frizzy to the point of being matted and teased in such a way it was visible. The entire thing refused to sit right on my head, nomatter how many bobby pins I used. It looked dumb and to this day I consider it unwearable.

I guess the Claudia was alright, it was a first gen wig so the skin top was sort of bent and wonky, it was also thin in the back, so the wefts were slightly visible.. The bangs were again, matted at the top and the lace/cap was visible if I tried to sweep the bangs to the side. When I tried to comb (gently, just to smooth it, not detangle anything) tons of fibers fell out, it was ridiculous.

The Candy Striper was fine, no problems. Eventually I ordered another candy striper from them, and it took three weeks to arrive (there were no sales/promotions going on, nor were they away) and came tangled. The wig was wrapped in a sheet of plastic that was taped on the side, some of the tape sticking to the wig. They refused to take responsibility for packaging errors and told me to finger comb the tangles.

I guess some of their wigs are alright now? I wouldn't risk buying from them again.

Slight Arda derail, as I came late to the party. I've had 2 experiences with them, both them of disappointing. The first time was a year or two ago, I had ordered a rose pink Le Tigre or something, and they didn't inform me it was not in stock til AFTER the paypal had gone through. Once I received an alternate pink wig, all along near the crown of the wig the fibers looked like someone had teased the shit out of them, then decided to take a heat gun to it. The wig is unwearable unless you wear some sort of hat :P

Second time and sort of a fuckarow - ordered extensions, magnum, and a ferrari with 3 day shipping. Don't receive the order til 3 weeks later... Paypal went through, never received a confirmation email or an email with a transaction number. About a week goes by, I'm getting pissed - email them, apparently it never went through but the paypal did :P They send out another order immediately. Receive the order about 3 days later. The magnum is satisfying but the Ferrari's hair fibers are crispy and cheap feeling. Apparently though the order DID go through, by contacting them a second time about the transaction number they accidentally sent out another shipment of the same wigs, this time the Ferrari a much nicer quality. So that was a nice silver lining - getting a second batch of wigs for free.

Their customer service seems pretty good, but shipping and overall quality of their wigs is very unpredictable. My friend ordered some wigs the same time I did and received hers in about 3 days without any sort of extra shipping...Luckily, I'm happy with the newer wigs I've received and will most likely be going back in the near future. >I refunded a bunch of people and apologized when I realized I was shutting down and they never revoked their bad reviews and still talk trash to this day.

A bunch of people or all of them? Nobody's obligated to go easy on you for failing as a business. It's not their problem that you can't get your shit together.

Well said.

Frankly his behavior in this thread has been outright appalling

Anon I would make anything for you to the best of my ability. You sound like the commissioner's dream.

Kind of like all of the people that think they can take on ten costumes before con, and oh btw it's in a month. Nothing like having friends holed up in their rooms all con finishing costumes. This I will never understand. But when it's a business and affecting other people, then it's just sad.

Well, that one person gave her 5 months. That's surely enough for anybody. It was only a wig not a full costume.

Yeah, but how many other people did too? Not trying to defend her, just agreeing with the general consensus of time management issues.

This. Back when they first started having booths, they had all the wigs on heads on the tall panels behind the table and had a few on their table. You could look, but not touch. You had no clue what the fibers felt like, how much packing was in a wig, etc. It was annoying as hell. Plus if you said you wanted X wig in a different color than what was on display, you had to estimate how the color would look through the bag. They wouldn't even let me open the bag and peek in, even with them handling the wig and were pretty rude when I asked for a better color estimation sans the glare and slight translucent color from the plastic bag. I presume they changed their behavior at cons now but after buying 3 shitty wigs from them, I don't even bother anymore.

Unless she had hundreds of orders, that's really no excuse. Let's just say she had about 20 orders, can other commissioners here not be able to do that amount in 5 months? While there are picky customers who expect perfection, most just want what they've paid for. The customer gave her plenty of time while she gave them plenty of grief. Plus, she had the nerve to still charge for it. And seeing as she tried to run away from said customer, even she knew it was a crap job.

Yeah, it was a few years ago. I wouldn't say they were rude about it, but they were pretty pushy and harsh. I was new to cosplay but I had owned a few wigs so it was pretty irritating not being able to see the inside of the cap, feel the fibers, or judge the thickness ahead of time. I would *not* have purchased the wigs if I had been able to see them up close.

>>6659126
Seems like you had a similar experience, sucks doesn't it?

Thank you. I bet it would have been 100 x better than what I received. I wasn't looking for absolute perfection, just something to wearable at the very least That was my only costume too, I had photo shoots lined up and group shots. She literately ruined my Con and my Husband didn't wear his costume because he didn't want me to feel left out.

I'm kinda scared to commission again because of this.

Still no sign of that commissioner?

They have to wait for their factory to turn around the amount of wigs they are restocking. That's why it takes so long. I think one time they even stated on their FB that their factory had to hire new workers just to meet their supply demand

From the point of them ordering, considering the amount of stock they likely order at a time, it can take their manufacturer 10-25 days just to produce their order. Then add shipping on top of that, and their time to sort their inventory and update their webpage.

I'd say the time it takes to prepare and then fully catalogue their order is anywhere from 1.5 to 2 months.

She can say she fucked up?
Hiding and dodging makes one look like a shody commissioner.
If you can't stand by your work, then you shouldn't be doing commissions.

Add in the amount of people that need to leave every two weeks to go to a convention and what jobs need to put aside while they are away and that would be about 2 to 2.5 months turn around. Which is normally the time they restock in
