Just got home. It was pretty fun, though I didn't really go to any panels or events. The main hallway was crowded, and made worse by those fucking daleks. They were huge and went through every half hour, getting in the way and running over peoples feet. There couldn't have legitimately been a good reason for the whole con to stop so frequently to let them pass.
Otherwise, most of what was fun about the con was hanging out with the seagulls and getting photos such as pic related.

They did look cool and I understand moving them for the purpose of like one or two panels, but it was pretty much ever 30min to an hour that they did the lap from one end to the other. Meanwhile the staff was yelling at everyone to gtfo. There were some part of the hallway that were so narrow, the big green one just barely got through, and I remember seeing it smash right into a woman's leg as she was sitting on the bench. If I were her, I'd have flipped my shit, but no, no one complained at any point and just let it happen.
I did voice my opinion about it at the closing ceremonies, so hopefully they don't let it happen next year.

The hallway was the worst part, and completely unavoidable at that venue. There were two main panel rooms, the dealer's room, and artist alley all accessible from that hallway.

Which means people are always walking in and out to the same spot. Or just hanging out in that spot waiting for the next panel/event. Of course it's going to be crowded, that's basically where 95% of the convention was!

The only time it got really bad is when there was lines (speed dating, autographs). Lines don't work in a hallway that narrow.

It's a shame the con has to end, but knowing the staff, it's probably the best decision they could have made. Con-G runs almost entirely on love and knuckle blood, and without those key, dedicated people able to give 100% it just wouldn't be the same.

For any of its problems, Con-G's been a really heartfelt project, and I'd hate to see it slowly peter out into a mess like some some other big cons. If Daleks and the Anime North Raffle are the worst complaints we can come up with, then Season 6 seems like a good time to end it, before real problems start cropping up.

The fact that half the audience at the closing ceremonies stayed to help tear down and rip up the green tape from Cosplay Chess off the floor is a pretty good indication of how loved the con is. You can't get that dedication at a lot of other shows.

Also, I'd like to say that I had a great weekend despite the annoyance of the daleks, the overly-crowded hallway, the fact that I only got about 10 people out to my first panel because it was during registration, and had projector problems with my second panel but it turned out okay in the end. I'll be dumping my pictures on here when they're ready. Sad that next year's the last year, I don't understand why they can't get more staff to take some of the load off? I think it's really just what they said. One of them lives in Calgary now (and flies in to run the con), some are married and looking at kids/house/life, and some are moving elsewhere or getting busy with other projects.

More staff means more chefs in the soup, and Con-G's a very personal project, so I think they have misgivings about allowing for a crapshoot when it comes to new recruits. They've gone from 5-8 staffers in 5 years, so it's clear they're incredibly selective.

I still think it's worth getting other/more staff members if it means they can continue to run this con for the hundreds of fans that attend it. I don't think they realize how much it means to not only the attendees, but the local dealers and artists who don't have many other ways to sell their products. I'm glad they're not money hungry power tripping business people like hobbystar, but I wish they could find another way to keep it going instead of giving up because they're tired. Even if it means giving up some of their control to new staffers.

You know if Con-G does end up disappearing... the only real winter con we have left is Frostcon... Antonio might possibly be rubbing his hands as we speak.

well there is Gryphcon. It's a university convention for gaming, held a week after Con G. I'm not saying it's an alternative, but I wouldn't be surprised if it gets an influx of attendees once Con G ends.

It's usually in Peter Clark Hall, which is basically the basement of the University Centre. It's all about gaming, no cosplay, no panels, no events. I don't think it would get a huge influx of new members with Con-G ending since it's already 25 years old. Maybe the awareness will be up, but they just do not offer the same experience.

>>6651827
I don't think it will disappear for good, but I do agree that the staff need to get their lives back before they can attempt another con. Con-G has been amazing to watch grow in these five years, and it will be missed by the local community. But they are people too and it's their choice.

There were a lot of novice awards, I wasn't expecting there to be that many! I don't think they were expecting many entries in divisions other than novice/journeyman so when they got more than one master and a bunch of artisans they were surprised. Still, happy I got one.

I won Best Artisan for my Jack Frost. Sadly I don't have any pics of it as of yet.

>Best Attention to Detail - Novice
Not dissin you or anything, but the sound of that award sounds like they didn't want to cause butthurt over people not winning anything. I like to think a few big, meaningful awards would generally help the cosplay community in general, rather than finding an award for anything they could think of. Sharks and piranhas up everyone's game.

>> No.6652200

>>6652157
Why would that "diss" me? It was not my award.
I'm just glad those two girls won something as they clearly spent a lot of time and effort on their costumes, and I personally think, and am glad, that they got some recognition for it.

>> No.6652223

Masquerades exist to reward hard work in cosplay, not as popularity contests. Novice awards tend to be numerous so as to encourage cosplayers with talent, rather than discourage them.

Also, it simultaneously makes the awards for Artisans and Masters more meaningful, as fewer of them exemplifies the quality required for those awards.

For the local masq judges, those awards with names are just their way of saying "best novice runnerup." It's for people in that category who didn't win the top award but the judges felt they were still worthy of an award. That's how it's been explained to me anyway.

Pre-reg was $25 for the entire weekend from Oct-Nov of last year. And after that it was only $30. $35 was the at the door price and even that isn't much when you consider they have to pay for everything with that.
Consider that Anime North is $60, FanExpo ranges from $90-200+, and the shitty TAC's charge $10 to sit in a hallway and do nothing. I think $35 is pretty damn reasonable.

Yeah, the only thing Con-G lacked, now that I think about it, was photoshoot locations. There weren't a lot of large windowed areas except the space taken up by the Doctor Who lounge. Hopefully next year that space gets freed up.
