People bragging about secret costumes. Okay, we get it, you have a costume you're not telling anyone about. You don't need to organize a parade for it every time you buy fabric or stitch a seam for it.
In the same vein, people who talk about how they're going to be the best ___ so far and go out of their way to talk crap about other people who have worn the same costume. We're a bunch of nerds in costumes spending way too much money shit we wear once or twice; why does it make them feel so good to place themselves above others? I get wanting to make the best costume you can to improve your skills, but being snarky or unpleasant because people like the same character as you is just silly.
And as for the actual costume-making, when you very carefully cut out two pieces with the same pattern and they don't match up somehow. Then you hold up the piece they're based off of and they somehow both match, but they don't match each other. I know there's something very simple I'm overlooking, but it feels like witchcraft every time.

It only doesn't get old, it gets fucking annoying. What's the point, seriously? It's not like it'll blow our minds when you finally reveal the character, we'll probably just go "Ohh, ok" and don't give it a second thought.

I had a secret costume once. I kind of thought the point was to NOT talk about it, so that it was a surprise and never told anyone. Why bother having a secret costume if everyone is expecting it and you're going to talk about it all the time?

I think for some events and masquerades 'secret' groups can be fun, but not when you're just using them to get attention and brag about it all the time.

>>6643286
You've obviously never had friends like that.

It has nothing to do with someone being full of themselves, and everything to do with being a jerk. I know because I did this when I was younger. I had a friend who was really pretty and would make big, fancy outfits and I just loved sticking with her at conventions because she knew all the 'coolest' people and I would get photographs and attention just from being with her.

Yeah it was dumb. I got over that real fast, and realized that if you want to feel good about yourself you need to rely on your own costumes and not someone else's.

"Acting in-character" at all. It's a fucking convention. It's not your Gaia roleplay board. It's not your fan-fiction. You're some nerd in a costume. You're free to have fun, but don't treat this like it's some off-stage play.

You want to act in character? Spend all your time wandering around looking confused and scared and audibly wondering why the hell you're in a hotel full of monsters, school children, people who want your picture for some reason, robots, scantily clad women, people openly carrying around weapons and firearms..

I mean, seriously, what part of a con makes you think "I'm going to pretend to be my character!"

If they've got some pose or posture or whatever, then do that when someone wants a photo, but being the cunt who decides "Hey! I'm dressed as a homestuck! That means I can act like a dick/hump/fight with anyone dressed as a homestuck character and call it being in character!"

Worse still, faggots who think they're being in character are often prone to even more drama and bullshit from other people being in character. I've seen Hetalia cosplayers start fights with one another over "in-character"back-and-forth snarking.

It's a bullshit excuse and it's a dumb fucking thing to do seriously at conventions.

If your life is so shitty that escaping into a character for a weekend is the only way you can enjoy yourself, then maybe you should stop working on your cosplay and start working on all your fucking issues.

Fuck I mad.

I think acting in character is ok when you play things up. Usually you'll get people asking you questions that the character would know or point out observations expecting a certain answer. Just simply going "meh" or any other neutral answer kills the joy

Or sometimes I keep costumes a secret if I'm not sure I'll finish them in time and don't want to disappoint people if it doesn't get done. My point was that people who drag that whole secret costume-making process out are a pain to be around.

I would just advise against it as a first cosplay choice. I've seen too many poor girls trip in those things at cons, and let's face it most heels are off by the end of the day anyway.

The only time I think they're tacky is if it's when someone is trying to overtly sexualize an otherwise modest character.

Like, how the fuck do you not remember that he was wearing sneakers the first time he met Light? Other characters commented on them and there was an extreme close up of them.
How the fuck do you miss that?
I haven't watched/read DN for years, nor have I ever tried to analyze L's attire to translate it into a costume, but I still remember that he had shoes, or at least think he wasn't enough of a dumbass to play a serious game of tennis barefoot.

I dunno, I saw a couple bring their baby to Katsucon and they just seemed content hanging around the convention space playing with their kid. I believe what it was is that one of them was with the baby at all times and the other went off and did stuff.

I think that could work. It's not like the baby was in cosplay anyway unless you count bear pajamas as cosplay...

Disgraceful losers, specifically when they are friends who blame you when they don't win a cosplay contest. I really thought I was a better judge of character but apparently I was overlooking blatant laws because this has happened a few times with different people.

I hate it when:
>friends compete and then end up taking it out on you when they don't win like you went up on stage and snatched that award out of the judge's hands

>win once and go into other contests expecting to win, but get super pissed when they don't and take it out on you

It makes for some very awkward situations especially when they're rooming with me in the hotel I booked. It's like our friendship went out the window just because they didn't get an award and now they won't talk to me at all because it's my doing? Cosplay sure can pull out the crazy in some people. It's incredible. I'm working to refine my group of friends and weed out the crazies.

Oh god, convention roommates are the worst. I like to go to bed at a reasonable hour, especially on Friday night, since Saturday is usually the contest and all the big events I want to go to. Then I stay with people who don't have their costumes finished, spend the entire night sewing (on machines, mind you), gluing, painting, styling, drilling, ironing, spraying. I don't mind staying up to drink and hang out, but when I'm trying to sleep at 4am I would appreciate the lights being off and it being reasonably quiet. Not only is it impossible to get a good night's rest, but then the hotel room is COVERED WITH CRAFT CRAP THE ENTIRE WEEKEND. Fucking hot glue and paint and glitter and wig fibers and fabric scraps and make-up. There's usually no clear space on the floor to walk, just piles of costumes and garbage. No respect for other people staying in the room that have their shit together.

>Masq group busts their ass to create pretty solid costumes and have their skit parts down to a freaking science
>One fail member of your group doesn't practice and it's painfully obvious during your performance.
>Afterwards fail member tells the group, "Next year we'll all try harder and have a solid performance!"
>99% OF OUR PROBLEMS ARE YOU, FAIL MEMBER.

It's gotta be like a local curse or something, because no matter what group I'm in, someone always plays that part. What the hell.

why not just kick them to the curb when their shortcomings become obvious

it's mean, yeah, but if they aren't up to par then there's no reason for them to be there.

I don't kick them to the curb exactly, but I just make sure that I'm not in a group with them anymore, even if my friends are. But it's weird… this has happened multiple times, and always seems to be one of the members that I think "oh, this person always does quality work and is reliable!" I'm beginning to think the problem is with me, not them or something.

Even worse when people invest in a 40 dollar wig before they buy a good petticoat and then say they don't have the money for a petti. What.

Oh god this. I was wearing a Saber Alter costume and wanted to go to the lolita meetup/panel because I've been wanting to get into the fashion. I walked up to these two lolitas walking around to ask where it was, since the schedule was confusing, and we talked for a few minutes. I mentioned that I was cosplaying and not wearing lolita and one girl goes, "LOLITA IS A FASHION NOT A COSPLAY," as I was walking away.

I didn't get the chance to turn around and talk to her since I was in a giant crowd of Homestuck cosplayers but my god I wanted to punch her.

If I had a dollar for every lolita I've seen with a full brand set, overpriced xboxhueg wig, and NO PETTI AT ALL, I'd be able to buy Sugary Carnival.

I think it's just a facet of the fact that most lolitas come into the fashion gigantic weeaboos, and thus haven't learned that it's pretty possible to look cute with your normal hair, as long as it's well kept and styled.

This so much. I have had it.

I used to have this issue also with panels. I do some fan dance panels from time to time, and there was one or two members who wouldn't practice until the week before. They were painfully under rehearsed and then would proceed to show off to everyone about how legit they were. I left the group on my own and have worked since with the only one person who actually kept up throughout the time.

As for masquerades, I had this problem a few cons ago. I always tell my teammates that even if you're under rehearsed, just have the confidence to do what you know and do the best you can. Last con we had two people who looked like fucking deer in the headlights and missed 80% of their stage directions.

We won for a smaller prize for the skit, but I wanted to smite them when the two members began gloating about the win, and didn't even bother to mention that they also had constructed the shitty costumes a few days before the skit while mine and my other members' were praised in construction and we heavily rehearsed.

All my shame and embarrassments. I also am really annoyed when people in a group decide on wanting to make a complex masquerade skit when they don't know what the fuck they are doing nor can they fell out of their denial that they cannot even decently construction said hard cosplay yet.

Out of curiosity, are there Madoka equivalents of narutards yet? The series seems to be getting really popular on tumblr, which never bodes well.
