I left cosplay for a couple years. I think it was 22-25 or somewhere thereabouts.

Life was busy with school and work and all that. I came back where there was a costume I just had to make. I still don't pump out 3 costumes a con like I see some people do.

Right now I am older and more than a little tired of the gossipy self righteous self importance I see in the hobby. I started in the late 90s and while I know that even then we did it for attention the addition of facebook fan pages, tumblr, 4chan, have made it one long competition.

Before constantly being in touch like we are we all met at cons, oggled all the sewing, you heard of one bitchfest (that person was an anomaly and given the cold shoulder for not being able to get along like everyone else), we all went home and enjoyed out pictures.

It being mainstream has given us so many more resources but the cost is it bringing in more people which in turn has made them compete.

I always assumed the more people who attach to a hobby the more varied and unwanted stereotypes appear. Before cosplaying was a small thing that was not very popular since it was a "nerdy" hobby. Now lots off people see it as another excuse to play Halloween fancy dress every day of the year. This being the image of halloween has also had a huge change from its original image now its lots of partying and getting drunk in costumes.

Holy fuck, yes. This is what has sucked all the fun out of cosplaying for me.

Then I come in here and see posts asking, "What character should I cosplay?" And I'm like, "Dude, don't you already have a character you think is awesome that you'd really love to cosplay? And if you don't, why fucking bother? Are you that much of an attention whore?"

That said, I do still make and wear costumes for other events, and I'm grateful for the tutorials and increased availability of specialty supplies and materials, but I haven't cosplayed at a con in years. And every time I'm tempted to start again, I just come here and get a reminder of why I don't enjoy it any more.

I think it's just the 'famous' cosplayers who are doing the softcore stuff. Cosplay is still 90% people doing Big 3 and flavor of the week cosplay.

Getting tired of cosplay isn't cosplay.

I only have one place I post my cosplay, I don't have a tumblr/fb/etc. and my friends constantly complain about how I don't socially network or 'get my costumes out there' enough.

Do I like the attention and photos at cons? Of course. Do I feel the need to be reblogged, liked and have a massive army of 'fans' so I can win stupid e-fame contests? Nope. People who are interested in costuming can find my costumes online if they want, but otherwise I'm not 'advertising' myself for no reason other than to get attention.

When I started cosplay it was about being your favourite character, meeting new people and having fun. People only had websites or pages so we could keep track of one another. There were one or two infamous attention-mongering types (yaya, ginny, alisa) but otherwise the majority were laid back and chill. If there was drama it was easily avoidable.

Now it's like most of my friends judge how good of a cosplayer you are by the likes, and not by your passion and skill. They think its completely upsidedown that I can make good costumes and don't have any 'likes' and are mystified by the fact this somehow doesn't affect my joy or success as a cosplayer.

protip: the key to cosplay fun and a good costume is a personal investment and passion in your costume and character. not how much attention you are getting. the cosplayer that loves what they've made will enjoy themselves even if they don't get a single photo, someone who has made a costume solely for attention and recognition will not.

I am fine with people cosplaying whatever they fuck they want to, slutty or not, but what I can't help but be bothered by is "famous" cosplayers with thousands of "fans" who have 0 actual talent and are popular simply because they post tits and ass of whatever the latest popular female comic book/video game/anime character is. I know I shouldn't care, but I hate that there are so many truly talented cosplayers out there that don't receive any recognition or validation for their work, while people go fucking nuts over run-of-the-mill "sexy geek girls". It's totally backwards, but I guess most people want to fap over cosplay than actually appreciate the art and craft. It makes me sad.

It's all about the word of mouth and getting yourself out there, whether you're good or bad.
No one's going to talk about you unless they know about you, which is obviously frustrating since it's not an easy task.

People are more likely to talk about the shit stains, the excellent, and the terrible rather than the mediocre. That's because they don't leave that much of an impression.
In order to do that, you have to find a flair or develop your own style. It's not as easy as just showing yourself off (not saying that's all that's involved in cosplaying for many, but that's the most basic principle of cosplaying).

You either have the face for it or don't, which is unfortunate when compared to other arts because one can learn and better themselves.
But the drawback is putting time and effort into becoming better and not being noticed compared to the drawback of always having a certain base to work from.

Obnoxious people are pretty easy to avoid. I've met more special snowflakes at school than I have at anime conventions or in cosplay. Regardless of how many "attention whores" there are, there are still a good number of people who are really pushing the limits of the craft and taking it to new levels. The Iron Wig competition Arda's holding right now kinda shows that, and people like Volpin are constantly producing new work and contributing back to the community.

Nowadays, because of how trendy cons are becoming, they're less of a showcase of cosplay than just sharing your stuff online. Maybe convention culture has shifted for the worse, but cosplay itself is just getting better as a hobby.

I'm so glad you posted this, because I feel I am quite similar about this. I don't feel that need to be constantly mongering for attention, and I really go to cons and cosplay to spend time with my friends. I feel thankful to have a group of friends with a more old-school mentality, and we're happy we can enjoy the fact that our cosplays are actually better than before due to practice and reworking on them. I'm really content at doing what I love.

On the other hand though, the cosplay community has really gone down. Do I blame the sluts solely? No, not at all. In fact, most of the con "sluts" I have met weren't necessarily scantily clad on the floor, but rather the creepy yaoi fakebois and crossdressers. I'm not even sure if half of the people have actually watched the show or bothered to know who their character was before they cosplayed as them.

I just can't get into the cosplay scene these days because of all the effort that everyone expects of you online, getting impressive photoshoots taken of you, and promoting yourself. Back in the day, it was all about dressing up and having fun, not for attention or e-fame. I had a cosplay website, but it was mostly for myself and a few friends, just as a way of tracking my progress and showing what I was planning on making. (Plus webdesign was a big hobby of mine, so I had websites for all my interests and fandoms)

I still come to cosplay with the same attitude I had back in 2000, just dress up and have fun, make friends, and have pictures to remember the experience by.

To me it seems like the less skilled and qualified a cosplayer is, the more entitled they believe they are to attention. I have a large group of cosplay friends and half of us have been cosplaying for a decade or so and are Masters level or professionals, the others have been cosplaying for only a few years and have never competed at an event and have no plans to. Most of them have only made a costume or two, and usually buy.

Can you guess which half of the group is obsessed with entering online competition, fanpages, being invited places as guests and spamming their shit everywhere? The latter half. That's because when you actually do good, solid work you don't need to make fanpages or shove yourself in everyones faces to receive opportunities or acknowledgement.

I had a serious twilight zone moment the other day when my younger friend who has been cosplaying for maybe two years and can barely sew a pair of pants together without help started talking about wanting to be invited someplace as a cosplay guest. She's also doing constant give-aways to get likes or follows. It used to be that making good stuff got you attention, apparently bribing people is the modern alternative.
