I want to know lolitas:

How would you rank your brands? In terms of price range (and the value of the quality)

Make a list and defend it

>> No.6630947

1. Jane Marple - $$$$. Best quality garments I have in my closet. Constructed well and lined.

2. Victorian Maiden - $$$. Love their craftsmanship. I only owned plain items from them, so can't comment on prints.

3. ETC - $$. The only drawback is that some of their clothings are not lined, but they are well made and the prints are very cute.

4. Angelic Pretty and Metamorphose - $$. Despite Meta's hit/miss, their garments are made well. When they hit, they really hit. I've yet to be disappointed. AP has great prints and their construction, while not as great as the above, does make them worth their price (esp. the pockets on a lot of their items).

5. BTSSB/AatP - $$. Hit/miss on the quality and color. Construction is good, but not as great as my Meta/AP stuff. Love their prints, esp. AatP, but the construction can leave me wanting more. Especially in recent years.

$ being price range of Bodyline. No experience with other brands, even indies, so can't comment.

Oh hey Choke

>> No.6631095

Only listing brands I own:

Victorian Maiden: Fairly expensive.
Pros: Amazing craftsmanship and material quality. Pieces are often mature-looking enough that they can be worn outside of lolita with ease, meaning more value/wears out of your piece. Frequently makes dresses on the longer side, which is good for larger girls.
Neutral comments: Tends to put out a lot of things that look the same (this can be a pro or a con in my opinion, if you're looking for one dress you might be able to find something similar instead.) Keeps to a similar muted color pallet most of the time. No or very few original prints.
Cons: Harder to find secondhand except a few little minor pieces here and there on mbok/y!j. Fewer reserves/pieces a year compared to other brands, and if you miss a reserve it's very hard to get an exact item again. You have to go through a SS to buy new afaik (either Tokyo Rebel or a Japanese SS). Rarely tends to fit plus sizes.

Innocent World: Moderately expensive.
Pros: Lots of pieces per year, good construction/material quality (that I've experienced), good english-speaking staff, and you can order direct. Makes long sizes that are good for taller girls.
Neutrals: Somewhat easy to find secondhand. Does original prints.
Cons: Low secondhand value save a few hyped pieces.

Metamorphose: Moderately expensive.
Pros: Good craftsmanship and materials.Unique designs and style. Supportive of the English-speaking market. Supportive of larger sizes.
Neutral: Does original prints frequently. Sometimes puts out things that just make you go wtf (is this good or bad? you decide.)
Cons: Extremely difficult to find specific pieces secondhand.

hit character limit, oops;

>>6631095
AATP/BTSSB: Ranges from a little to very expensive for special sets, usually moderate.
Pros: LOTS of pieces a year. Lots of prints a year. Very easy to find secondhand. Fits a large range of sizes. Has shops and a presence internationally so it's possible to buy in-person. English-speaking support.
Neutrals: Many original print releases.
Cons: Sought after, so lots of competition to get pieces. English customer service known for being rude and blacklisting people on a whim or based on their own mistake/misunderstanding. Construction and materials is not as good as other brands.

I guess I'll include taobao and 'offbrands' too.

Dear Celine: Fairly inexpensive.
Pros: Construction and materials fairly good for taobao brand. Carries a variety of styles, sweet classic and gothic. Good construction. Custom sizing (? I think this may have changed).
Neutrals: No original prints (that I know of).
Cons: Things sell out very quickly lately, leading to not much selection.

Rose Melody: Fairly inexpensive.
Pros: Good materials, decent construction. Releases a large variety of items for each series. Custom sizing.
Neutrals: Original screenprints.
Cons: I haven't experienced any, personally. A bit expensive for taobao, I guess?

Fanplusfriend: Fairly inexpensive.
Pros: Custom sizing, custom colors, will even do custom items (I think?). A large range of designs and styles.
Neutrals: Starting to do original prints. Lots of knockoff items of MM, h.naoto etc.
Cons: Quality, design taste and sizing is very hit or miss. Uses questionable lace and fabric sometimes.

Bodyline: Inexpensive.
Pros: Easy to order, large amounts of stock on most items, restocks items. Very good for lolita shoes. Quality slowly getting better on clothes but still hit or miss. Plus size items.
Neutrals: Original and knockoff prints/items.
Cons: Often terrible quality and design ita items mixed in with the decent. Still clings to its days as a sex/cosplay shop. Virtually no customer service. Mr. Yan.

>1. Jane Marple - $$$$. Best quality garments I have in my closet. Constructed well and lined.

I feel like this is because they are targeted towards older women, like those with careers. They look more for quality, and have a bit more discretionary spending cash and may look for more, grown up serious pieces.

Maybe you bought duds? Dunno anon, the stuff I've bought from them was made of quality fabric and constructed well. Granted it was a print item, and recent.

>> No.6631841

Mary Magdalene -- I don't even know what to say, so beautiful and special. Every time I get one it looks better than I had expected. I'm not a seamstress, but you can really feel the quality. I also feel like they're not quite as delicate as my VM, which makes me more inclined to actually wear them. Fabulous, FABULOUS blouses. I know paying for brand blouses is a bit cray, but theirs are the way to go. The major con is obvious; girl just doesn't put out a huge variety of dresses. Also, I personally think some of their stuff is on the costume-y side of classic.

Victorian Maiden -- I love the few VM pieces I have. I've found VM to be less expensive but more difficult to find than MM. In the middle in terms of variety and elegance. On the bright side, I don't think you can go too wrong with VM; they are pretty much all class. They have cute and interesting accessories, too.

Juliette et Justine -- Definitely the most mixed bag of any brand I've used. Some of their pieces are just mind-blowingly ugly, but they also have some of the prettiest, most unique dresses in the classic style. Their quality is a bit lacking compared to the above; I have a print dress where the print isn't quite as crisp as you'd want, and I've seen them put out dresses with some terrible looking lace. But more they have dresses that are stunningly beautiful and you just won't find anywhere else.

Innocent World -- Usually you can find this pretty cheap second hand, or even through their own sales. And it still looks pretty damn great. To be straight with you, I only use them for accessories (which are all adorable -- the boots I got from there are amongst my favorite lolita goods), but whenever I see someone else wearing their stuff it looks terrific. My personal beef with their dresses is all the shirring. I know most lolitas are used to it, but it just looks awful to me.

Bodyline -- Shoes and socks are surprisingly cute. The dresses and blouses, not so much.

Me pointing out someone's retardation when it comes to using the internet does not make me retarded.

They were the ones that wanted an answer. I'd have thought that someone who can find cgl would know what Google is. That, and understand how retarded their choice of action was. Observe:

Anon has a question. Anon is currently on the internet. Anon could spend 3 seconds typing 'bloke' into Google and scanning the list of results.

What do they do instead though? They click 'reply', they type out more twice as many characters to form a question than google searching an answer would have required. After that, they then have to type in the captcha, which again is more than twice as many characters as 'bloke'.

tl;dr anon is a fucking retard who can't even use google.

Here's my ranking:

Angelic Pretty
Price: $$
Quality: Very good. I'm anti brand elitist, but AP consistently surprises me with how professional their garment construction is (ie- as opposed to amateur sewing).
One of the blouses I own from them is constructed similarly to a taobao blouse but has an extra little hidden button which makes the collar stay shut properly, the taobao version is always flopping down.
Aside from that, I like the cotton they usually use for their prints, it has a nice drape. You can also count on their print not to run in the wash (barring isolated incidents). They also do interesting stuff like pleated skirts (while keeping the lolita shape, something I'm struggling to do), jacquards, and so on.
Comments:
Whilst it isn't a sewing flaw I wish they made their shoulder straps longer so I can actually adjust them (I get that some dresses can't be adjusted, but a few AP jsks have buttons on the ends of their shoulder straps).
Also, I have a soft spot for their cute lace. I think it's awesome that the lace matches the theme of the dress.
Innocent World
Price: $$
Quality: (almost) very good. My IW stuff seems to have the biggest variety in fabric choice, although that might just be my selection of clothes from them. Whatever fabric they pick though, it usually drapes beautifully except this one specific jsk with a stiff lining (maybe to make up for the super soft chiffon outer layer). Most things are fully lined. Everything is also well-designed, I'd put them on the same level as AP, except I had this one skirt where the decorative buttons were sewn with one stitch and then knotted, some fell off as the knot undid itself over several wears.
Comments:
I generally wish all brands, lolita and non lolita, would just put darn pockets in their clothes, but especially IW since I have a lot of stuff from them!

>> No.6636058

>>6636051

Moi Meme Moitie
(keep in mind I actually only have one jsk and one skirt)
Price: $$$$
Quality: Very good? Well I had to admit I was expecting cheap chiffon on the dresses, but it turned out to be really soft, almost silk-like, I'm very impressed by that. Similar story with the lace, it was a lot softer than what I had been able to find in my local haberdashery, and the ribbon is also surprisingly expensive-feeling. The skirt was made from twill, and it also drapes better than I expected. Same with the custom tulle lace, I was expecting something stiffer actually.
Only thing as I thought the print looks a touch blurry, but it's not actually pixelated, maybe a problem with printing on that particular fabric?
Comments:
I actually think this should rank above IW, because that's the softest, nicest chiffon and ribbon I've ever touched. But it's really unfair to compare just that one dress, there's probably an IW dress out there with comparable chiffon, or maybe other Moitie items use some rougher fabric.
I'm also biased because that skirt looked really nice on my big hips, and it also looks good without a petticoat.

Juliette et Justine
(keep in mind I actually only have Feerie in two colours)
Price: $$$$
Quality: I'd swear it's the same chiffon moitie uses, only lighter.
Comments:
Well, it's still only one dress, so it's still a little hard to judge, even though I really want to say their quality appears to be on par with moitie's just because of the chiffon thing.

>> No.6636068

>>6636058

Baby the Stars/Alice and the Pirates
Price: $$$
Quality: Good (only). The constructions is definitely solid; there's a dress without shirring where my boobs are pushing the max measurements. Neither the zipper nor the dress gave way at all. I also like their use of venise, cotton and eyelet lace.
Where I'd mark them down, the bodices on their dresses are usually not lined unless it's an A-line dress (no waist seams to hang a partial lining from I guess).
Comments:
Don't worry I'm not stretching out brand, my bust is 92cm and my waist is 72cm, both being exactly the max measurements for flower cart embroidery. It's generally more comfortable if you're one or two cm below the max though, I could barely breathe!

Metamorphose
(Keep in mind I bought my stuff last year, and 90% of my Meta stuff is Dim Light)
Price: $$
Quality: Good, again everything being fully lined, sturdy construction, and beautiful fabric with nice drape, and good lace. I know a lot of lolis complain that Meta uses raschel lace, but when I saw items with raschel lace in person, they're really soft, not the hard cheap type. So I would mark raschel lace as more of a design problem rather than a quality problem. I also like that the ribbon combs for Dim Light uses dull satin, not to shiny or cheap looking, feels really soft and luxurious.
Where I'd mark them down, Meta in particular has a reputation for the print running; this isn't just a matter of convenience in throwing expensive dresses into the washing machine, I worry a lot whether it's safe to wear my clothes out in case it rains.
The mini skirt for Dim Light has silver trim on it that's also pretty itchy, so I'm inclined to mark them down there as well, although I have to admit the trim looks really good with the print.
Comments:
Quite a lot of their designs isn't to my taste so I don't have much Meta...

>> No.6636081

>>6636068

Bodyline
Price: $
Quality: It's mostly meh. Most of their fabrics have a lot of stiffness to them, so the skirts look best with a petticoat because without one it just kind of sticks out weirdly rather than falling gently around my hips. Same with the blouses I have, on the surface they look the same as other brands but I've never been so glad to get out of a blouse, the fabric was just stiffer and less comfy than normal.
Also, nothing I have from them is lined, although I'll add you don't usually need it as the cotton is so thick.
Comments:
I know most lolis say to avoid the older stuff and buy the newer stuff, but these comments refer both to items bought last year and items bought when I started out three, four years ago. I think their quality has consistently been slightly on the costume-ish side, as in, none of my non-loli clothing would ever be constructed from such stiff fabric. Even their tulle lace seems to be stiffer that I'd find on a taobao blouse (keeping in mind we're comparing tulle lace to tulle lace, not raschel to tulle)

>> No.6636095

>>6636081

Dear Celine
(So. Taobao in general is tough to rate. Even within a single shop the quality of items can vary quite a lot)
Price: $
Quality: Looks like their newer stuff is better, I have 2 or 4 of their newer blouses which is mostly good. I do have issues with the cutting, it seems like she puts the waist around my hips, and no, it's not the blouse being flared out to end lower on my hips, the blouse actually doesn't even close because my hips are bigger the waist. I want to say maybe my body is shaped funny because no one else seems to have this issue, but then I don't have this issue with brand blouses.
I bought a couple of their older blouses, they debuted when Qutieland first started selling stuff on lj and were still available -- and one of them has really itchy exposed elastic on both ends of the raglan sleeve. The other was made of a cotton that wrinkled as soon as you blinked. So if anything old is still on their webshop, I'd be wary of the quality.
Comment:
I'd love more stuff from them but it seems like their new stuff sell out wayyy too fast!

I only have one or two items from the other taobao brands, most of which were bought around three years ago. Let me know if you really still want me to rate them.

Random anon who just saw this pic on the front page. Who is this queen? Is she the queen of the lolitas? She looks like royalty.

Baroque
(I only have Pearl Drops on Dry Flowers)
Price: $+ (darn, I didn't think the rating system through properly. they're pricier than Bodyline/taobao but cheaper than AP/IW)
Quality: Despite the really terrible review on egl (or maybe because of it?) I got dresses that fitted perfectly, no funny seams, nothing crooked. The headdress is sturdy and doesn't have visible glue marks on it (it also doesn't have visible stitch marks on it, so I'd wager the stuff is glued on).
I'd really like to rate them as being good, but so far they don't have enough history to say they're reliably good, and then there's the whole mess with that girl who posted her horrible dress.
The other part I'd mark them down is that my bonnet has a dent in it, I can't seem to get the dent out, and I'm not sure if the interfacing (?) inside is permanently creased or if one side of the bonnet (front and back, not left and right) is shorter so the two fabric can't lie flat together.
Comment:
I even got the green version customised with a longer bodice, and there was a free headdress in my package to boot, so I'm definitely very happy with Baroque

Haenuli
(I only have Stained Glass of Saint Giles)
Price: $+
Quality: Good? I'm very impressed, it's sturdy and solid. The fabric is softer to touch than I thought (I thought it was twill when I ordered it, when it arrived it isn't as rough as I expected). I think the print is about as crisp as it can be due to the weave of the fabric and the colours are vibrant. The venise lace isn't as special as what Baby puts on their dresses (ie- not as thick, and it looks like something I could source easily myself whereas Baby's stuff tends to be unusual), but it's still decent lace. The corsetting at the back is done with grommets rather than Baby's tendency to use loopy lace, so extra points for that as well.
I will note that the bodice seems to be much longer on this dress though, while the bust darts actually seem to be one inch above my actual bust?? It feels like there's some looseness above my bust, while my bust just feels quite squeezed in. If I pull the dress down it seems to fit better, but then the waist pinches my stomach uncomfortably, feels like it's too tight for my hips while my waist is fine. Most of my other dresses fit me fine, so idk, I'm probably not the right body type to fit into this dress?
Comment:
She added postcards, sweets, a handwriten note and there was a screen cleaner cloth with custom print on it into my package. I like freebies lol.

Wondertropolis
(I only have that print with the fake Eiffel Tower-looking scribble. You know the one.)
Price: $
Quality: Good! Dress was custom made and fitted well, although a bit loose (they've clarified it's intentional as it's not meant to be worn without a blouse under it).
The ribbon around the waist is grosgrain, so it's not as awesome as Moitie's or Meta's luxuriously soft ribbon, but it's also not low quality ribbon either. I don't think I'd mark them down for this, I just wouldn't mark them up either.
I've been wondering how delicate the print is, I think the recommended care is to handwash it gently.
Comment:
Does anyone know if they're going to produce more stuff? They seem very quiet.
Also, they included free eiffel tower-shaped jewellery in my package, which made me super duper happy, but it tarnishes straight after one wear (record time!), which was depressing, but then again it was free and shouldn't reflect on the actual clothes quality so idk.

1. Jane Marple - $$$$

2. Mary Magdalene/VM - $$$
About the same for me: MM is a little more expensive, but their quality on recent releases is less.

3. Juliette et Justine
Hit or miss, and I own a lot. Feerie, while pretty, was shit quality IMO and I was really disappointed. Lining is scratchy and cheap as fuck. Their velvet pieces are always amazing though.

4. AP
custom lace! better zippers, pockets, etc.

5. BtSSB/AatP
Often disappointing quality for the price--they were my first brand items so I didn't know better then but now I'm wary.

i'm actually thinking her forearm is shooped pretty intensely in that picture. really thinking. as in, that is some pretty bad shoop right there.

idk it looks pretty kawaii to me, but i base my taste in noses mostly on how well they fit the face they're on. i can't really describe choke's nose- it's a bit different- but it goes well with her other features and i can't picture that any changes to it would look better.
