Ok /cgl/, I want to make my first ballgown. I'm not very experienced at sewing, so can you give me some pointers to start out?

Like what patterns should I buy or any special technique I should use...

if you're not experienced with sewing, please don't make a ballgown. they are a lot more difficult to do right than they look and are time and money consuming.

That's not very motivating... I really want to make this dress and I have a lot of time to try out.

You have to give us a little more than "how do I make this?"

Do you have a sewing machine? Do you know how to use it? What are your fabric stores nearby?

Diff anon, but I'd say not to do it if you're not experienced also... You're going to end up very frustrated with the monstrosities you're going to create at first and go through a lot of valuable fabric. Is there anything smaller you'd like to make first?

I have a sewing machine, I know how to use it. I know how to read patterns and can draft some pieces. Fabric stores, there are at least 5 in my city, less than 30 minutes away, so I have a lot of fabric choices.

I just never did anything like this before, sorry if I was not clear.

I know it's not what you want to hear but I agree with the other anons. Most of us HATE our first costumes looking back. You could definitely do this but try some other smaller things first to get the feel like make some shirts or skirts or smaller dresses for casual wear first.

Fabric: Get a satin that's not too shiny and not too drab. Joann's Bridal or Casa collection are my go to

Pattern: Look through the pattern books at your store and see what you can find to make the top and bottom. It's unlikely you'll find a pattern that encompasses the whole dress. You have to piece it together a lot of the time.

Poof: Get a 5-6 hoop hoop skirt. Angel's bridal on ebay is more go to. The pictures are squished and don't represent the actual size that well. Get or make a softer petticoat made of tulle to go over it to smooth over the hoops so thy don't show through the skirt.

Tidbits: Look up cosplay epaulette tutorials there's a few good ones out there.

I made a few dresses for myself already, but they are all using the same pattern that I drafted and have nothing to do with this.

The other costumes I'm planning are with pants, so no skirt training here, lol

Isn't this color scheme someone else's design? Pic related.

No? Unless you're talking about some of the minor embelishments.

by someone else do you mean the creators of utena?
it's her gown in the last episode as well as the first version of the ending credits

We are talking about the colors. Utena's cannon gown is pink with turquoise ruffles. Not white with greenish ruffles.
