Finished the other tsuba. Kinda. I accidentally splintered off the edge railing of the handle half while I was taking it out from the rest of the wood blank... hopefully it's fixable, or at least disguiseable with wood filler. How sturdy is that stuff on its own?

I don't mean this in a snarky way - why are you using such blue fur?

>> No.6612493

>>6612485

Nah, that's an understandable question. It's definitely not the right color, but it's the closest I could find in the length I needed. I'm going to see if I can tone it down a bit once I'm finished with some dye or maybe even some alcohol based markers. I messed with a test swatch a bit but didn't get very positive results though (I was just testing the dye cold though, it might work better with hot water). And since I have to trim the fur in some spots, I figured it was probably safer to wait until I get it trimmed and put together to adjust the color, lest I end up missing some patches underneath and then trim them and it looks retarded.

Some progress over the last week. Shortened and took in my Pinkie Pie dress, and did some work on Zelda's accessories. the sailcloth needs a good ironing & some paint touchups are needed. i have no deadline for the costume, so no rush.

And he has blue hair on the manga covers...it's described as blonde inside, and some of the colored art inside shows him with blonde. It's weird, I have no idea why they did that. :/ but I went with blonde because it was an easier wig base to find & my stickler for accuracy since he is specifically described as blonde several times throughout the story.

Fuckin' beautiful.

Progress made. Still trying to find a permanent solution for gluing the plates to the spandex. E6000 didn't work, nor did Super 77. Hot glue is holding.... for the moment. I think it's the blend in the spandex or something cause nothing is really sticking to it. I'll have to figure something out.

Still need some plates to plastidip, but overall the finish on most of the pieces are acceptable. Sadly the cape is gripping to them like mad. Will have to make my own cape, something thick and a little less grippy.

Still building the cowl and will be remaking the chest piece about... 10% bigger, I have a stupidly long torso.
Cape will be attached to the new torso.

Eventually I'll buy a cowl from the RPF, but I'm a bit strapped as I just bought an engagement ring.

Fimo? Like polymer clay? That sounds really heavy, especially if you're going to be using those PVC pipes as a base. Have you tried/thought of using expanding insulation foam that comes in a can? It's messy and takes a while, but it's super lightweight and pretty solid once you go over it with a primer and paint.

>> No.6615078

fimo air dry is what we were going to use. It's extremely light! Only problem is it's quite expensive. We considered expanding foam but imo it's a lot harder to work with..

I've used Sculpey/Fimo before and I know how much they lighten up after baking, but still, for something full-body like that, I'm not sure if it'd be the best option, and if price is an issue, then insulation foam/pink fiberglass stuff probably has it beat and might be a better material to work with.

This stuff? I've used it before and it's.... Ehhhh I'm extremely ambivalent about it. It has a weirdly dry, papery texture that doesn't stick well to itself and is hard to mold. I guess it might be okay for a larger project that doesn't require a lot of detail work, but in general it's not the most friendly material to work with and doesn't really justify the price unless you can actually find it for really cheap.

Dem spikes! That's looking awesome! They're looking extremely clean and very well structured. Did you use foam as a base? To fill in the spaces, take some extra wefts, glue them to the base of one of the other spikes, and pull them over to cover an adjacent spike. That will give it more volume and fill in those empty spots.

finished my cape and cowl. I let the fabric drape for a week before continuing and am I ever glad I did, the hem stretched a ridiculous amount in a few places and the bottom went completely wonk because I patterned it in 3 pieces rather than a circle for the fluted shape I wanted.

hemming took forever and I ended up removing probably 2 inches more than I should have, so now it sits closer to mid calf than ankle... I guess it's more practical that way.

now onto the bodice and bodysuit and then the horror that will be handsewn satin gloves and boots.

This totally counts as progress because before, you couldn't see the floor in here. It was just my woman cave of fabric scraps and costumes. Now everything is all nice and hung up and the fabric is organized in bags by color. It's great but I'm doubtful for how long it will last.

Not too hard, save for the topstitching, or anywhere it became more than 3 layers of the stuff (thus why some of the topstitching is farther in than others, i was dodging the seam allowance wherever I didn't have to worry about encountering the design). No special machine, just special needles. It's a different beast, for sure, but can't say anything negative about it.

>> No.6618188

>>6617446
Not sure yet. It looks really clean, but I'm unsatisfied with the foam work on the back of the beast piece. I'm considering two options: Rondo (a mixture of resin & bondo) or covering it with thin craft foam like Lil Tyrant did on her Kat build. I will need to do more research on the Rondo method before doing that, though. I'm not exactly sure how that would work, considering the fact that foam is flexible.

-Top stitch around jacket collar and edges. Make 50 fake silver bullets. Buy square toed black dress shoes.

HERE IS WHERE I NEED HELP:
I put a white outline on the shoulders and the pockets to bring them out a little. I can't tell if they stand out too much, or if I should keep/remove them. It looked so plain without the white outlines but it's not cannon to the series. Thoughts?

I used worbla, very similar to wonderflex. Yaya sells it now. The majority of the how I made it was using a slump mold process (there are a ton of other pieces missing in the photo).

Basically you make a base in which to drape/press the material into shape. For the breast plate, I used my foam dress form as my slump mold. I had to use plaster on it to be sturdy to get a sturdy shape. From there I heated (w/ a heat gun) two layers of worbla and put it over top my dress form. With the help of a friend we were able to re-heat and press it into the shape you see. Then we took it off the dress form and press it to me to get the final shape.

Finished the feet as well. I couldn't come up with a way to make the toe moveable or removable in a way that felt stable enough. These stilts will be quite a bit harder to get used to than my gundam ones since they have a much more pronounced heel. Ill just have to be careful. These are also velcro shoes on top so it should make the 'suit up' alot less painful as well. The foot on the right is quite a bit more rough than the one on the left since I'm alot better at working with EVA now. If I have time when everything else is complete ill redo it.

I'm really glad the feet with be made out of EVA foam this time around since the past few outings in the gundam suit people kept stepping on the suits feet and damaging them.

I'm not really sure where you look.. I guess the household-items section of a store, but you're looking for an aerosol can. It'll say something about starch.
Spray it on your fabric, and it hardens it. People usually starch dress pants to give them that everlasting center-crease.
You can test it on things first if you want. Essentially it's just hairspray for your clothes.

It's 22awg, just the hookup wire that Sparkfun had available *shrug* It won't be a problem for the other stuff I need to wire, in fact it'll be preferred; this was the only one I could have used thinner gauge.

Matt? If so you are amazing, love your vids.

Costume nearing completion. need to add some more plates and add some more padding to the cowl so it sits right.

Also need to blank out the reflective shit on the gloves, didn't realize it would be that bad until the pic was taken.

I keep feeling like the plates are going to pop off everytime I move, but they are holding so far. I'm sure 5 minutes after I get to an event they will, oh they will.

Working on side skirts atm. Still need to add the insides of the vents on top. Once these are done I plan to start working on the lower legs.

>>6623046
The only parts I am panning to do in EVA for this costume are the feet, thighs, lower torso. Maybe the wings too since those will probably get bumped alot and I don't want them to break easily. Ive been using a dremel to be-level edges on the inside so it matches up well for sharp angles. I also dremeled channels on the inside for the foam to fold and bend along to make nice clean lines and folds. I used a heat gun to melt the top layer of the foam slightly so its not covered in bubbles and pock marks like untreated EVA tends to. A layer of spray-on black plastidip is what I used to seal it.

The rest of the costume is being made of PVC sheets ranging from 1mm-3mm.

I want to do vacuum forming at some point in the future to hopefully mass produce some costume parts and props but I don't have the space for such a setup at the moment.

If you're looking to improve friend, take a tip I taught myself while making helmets. If you're working with bondo this will work for sure. Go to home depot or whatever and pick up a sizable container of wall plaster I think it's called (it's pink and smells like concrete) ask around for it. When you get it home, apply to your costume lightly in troublesome spots. The advantage of this stuff is it's a much lighter material so it sands way better, getting it smooth takes a matter of seconds with even the lightest sand paper. It can easily be used to fill in small holes/divets/bumps in your bondo/whatever without hurting your existing work. Once you paint and put clear coat on, no one will be able to even tell what you did.

Keep in mind though that MDF dust is extremely toxic due to the chemicals it is treated with. Work with it outside if possible. If that's not an option you might want to try building a setup like the one pictured to keep the dust away from your lungs and things.

Quickest costume I've ever done. Literally went out yesterday to some charity shops and found everything and painted some shoes. All I need to do now is find the right headphones, get a watch and colour the collar of the jumper blue. Also need a skateboard and baseball bat but I'm borrowing those off people.

Just figured I'd throw this up since I posted earlier progress, Sugar Mountain is pretty much done. I'm gonna redo a lot of her outfit, including the tights/arm warmers and the mob cap but I really like how her dress came out.

And Jojo poses are fun as hell. Blocked out my face because the boyfriend took a quick snap on the way back to the hotel to change and man did I look ragged

Suck it up and rebuild. It's hard, but you know it'll be worth it when you're finished- it looks pretty good, scale aside.

I am rebuilding! I already started today. I was just wondering what to do with the completed chest piece. I might give it away.

Finished shoes. They were very easy to modify. I decided to leave the buckles alone because I didn't want to destroy the base shoes (the gold trim can come off with some strong alcohol-based remover). Surely other people won't notice unless they were looking hard for them, right?

DIY mannequin.

I think there's some distortion as volume expands to maximum- my ovoid torso and wrists become more circular in cross-section.

Hawkeye Cosplay

One month left to finish, but I'm quite positive that I'll finish it in time. The fabric is so much fun to work with.

Matt and I experimented with Worbla for the first time, made Jasons bat logo.

Also i know i know hurr durr not a help thread, but might as well ask - anyone know why the bottom photo happens? We had to manually reheat the edges and wrap them over. Did we just cut too close? Or not heat it enough? We tried cutting less close to the craft foam but that just looked bad.

I was so happy to see my leggings had finally come in the mail and that they were both the same. I need to neaten up a lot of shit now, paint the horse onto the headscarf, paint the horseshoe and colour the shoes. After all that though then it's just experimenting with make up and drawing stars on my hand.

Shirt and thigh parts finished~ It's a bit hard to tell in this photo but the lines Ms fortune has that run down the front of her shirt are added in with a pseudo blocking. And now both parts of the "Pants" are finished and hemmed. Sakura Con, here I come!

Tenleid and I finished the Worbla armor for my Jason Todd/Red Hood New 52 cosplay.

Next we just have to mold it to my body and move on to gesso-ing it a few times before hitting it with some paint.
