A lot of academics are under pressure due to how grants have changed over the years. Tl;dr the growth rate of post docs has far exceeded the growth rate of jobs that require a PhD and a lot of these guys are under tremendous stress due to this inequity (this doesn't excuse terrible behavior though).

It's been bad to the point where an acquaintance of mine recently committed suicide even though he was a top tier researcher.

My schedule so far~ lots of panels, but i'll probably skip most of them in favor of roaming for photos. I'm a little down that I couldn't get more solid bookings, I got a lot of "you can text me and we'll work out a time" kind of thing that i'll just be hounding really hard~

This is my first big 'murican con, few questions:

• Is it rude to ask a cosplayer "do you mind coming over here and taking photos with me for 5min?" or something similar? Especially if they're hanging out in a hall with the intent of having their photo taken, it's fair game to give them some direction and hang around them?

• Am I allowed to speak at the yaya? would getting a signature be weird?

• Any tips on getting from Baltimore airport to the con? it seems like there's busses most of the way, I just want to get there asap, should I just cab it from the green belt?

Woah, I really didn't mean to start any debate. I'm missing one class of History and Systems of Psychology, I just didn't think it warranted such an unprofessional reaction.
I've been criticized by a professor for falling behind once, but I've never been asked "what the hell is wrong with me" and had my hopes of grad school literally laughed at for missing one class

>>6624271
>moving cosplayers
Not rude at all. I mean, unless they're obviously busy (eating, already working with a photographer, etc). It can get kind of creepy if you don't let them know that you're a serious photographer and you run them all over the convention center, then never give them pictures.
>Yaya
She'll probably love it. I tried to take a picture of her last year, while stepping outside of some video they were taking of her, and some lady pushed me in to the cameraview so they could "capture all the "adoring fangirls" who wanted pictures of Yaya"
>travel
Baltimore is about an hour away from National Harbor, and I'm not sure if any buses run that far. It's much closer to DC.

I like to think Katsu is a pretty relaxed, cosplay-oriented convention. People are always really nice and the area is absolutely beautiful.

A cab from Greenbelt will be about $100 each way. Here's my recommendation:

- When you arrive, take the shuttle to the MARC (commuter train) station ($6 one way). Take the MARC to Union Station in DC. The Gaylord runs a shuttle from Union Station to the hotel ($13 on way). If you're worried about taking a bus to a train to a bus, get a one-way Super Shuttle ($45).

- The MARC doesn't run from Union to BWI on Sundays -- only Amtrak, which is $20 (on top of the $13 shuttle). For Sunday, I recommend that you get Super Shuttle van service ($45 one way).

If you want to be cheap, and stupid, about it, you can take the bus from BWI to Greenbelt ($6, like forty minutes, runs infrequently), the metro from Greenbelt to some train station whose name I forget (40 minutes? $3), and the NH1 bus (which never runs) to the hotel. This is the stupid option and not worth the money you'll save.

This is apparently how it goes[from a tumblr]:

"The Gaylord National is double-booked. The BBYO has organized an event spanning the whole of the weekend until monday. They have also booked the Cherry Blossom Ballroom AND the foyer, AKA Katsucon’s iconic gazebo area. This means that technically, anyone who isn’t the BBYO is barred from this area.

HOWEVER, the security staff has been spoken to by an independent contractor acting as liaison between the congoers and the management, along with Katsucon staff and BBYO reps themselves. The arrangement that has been made so far, subject to change, is that between the hours of 9 AM and 10 PM, while the BBYO groups are out touring the nation’s capitol, the empty foyer and gazebo is in a state of “soft open.” Provided they’re quick and orderly about it, provided nobody is there already, and provided BBYO staffers don’t walk across the room and put a stop to it, cosplayers may still use the gazebo, albeit in a limited fashion.

Please please PLEASE play this one cool, guys. It’s a tentative agreement made quickly between several slightly confused parties with little to no communication between them. So we can’t be sure of anything, but the takeaway is that the gazebo and the whole floor around it is still open while it’s not otherwise occupied. Just move about your business quickly while you’re there.

The rest of the con is still open season or cosplayers. Just don’t make a fuss over this gazebo thing and we’ll be golden."

My friends and I just got back from picking up our badges. While we were there, I asked some of the Katsucon staffers at the information booth about the situation. In a nutshell, here's what they told me: (inb4 TL:DR)

Apparently this Jewish Youth convention thing is all kids ages 11-16. They have a "curfew" in the evenings, but they didn't say what time that was. Also, the closing of certain spaces happened very recently (the guy I spoke to said he was informed by his higher-ups TODAY), and it is limited to the ballroom, the gazebo area outside of it (the white marble floor area) and PART of the downstairs "garden" area. By part, I was told only the side closest to the gazebo side, behind the two little house things where that one restaurant is. Everything beyond that, including the fountain, and on up to the big glass curtain wall is open to Katsucon attendees.

For what it's worth, I told them that Katsucon needs to put out an official statement on their website, because right now everything on the internet is one big clusterfuck of misinformation. I know, it will never happen, but at least I can say I tried.

It's the fact that the gazebo is the single best spot for cosplay photography, that's the reason people here are pissed. That's due to the WCS prelims or whatever that shit was that was happening there. A lot of people who wouldn't normally go start going, but again, because of cosplay.

Cosplay is an important part of convention culture, but they are often the more vocal, and demanding part even though most just use it as a weekend long photoshoot. A lot of of the smaller cons have more and more cosplay planels, compared to something like Otakon that has a good number of generic ones, but it's a small part of the overal panels. They also are pretty accommadating of their fountain area. Cons like Katsucon and AUSA get more attention from cosplayers, who are more stingy and whiney.

Katsucon really doesn't have a say in the matter when booking a venue. Nor do most cons for that matter as it goes through the facilities event coordinator. The convention only deals with the space it's paying for while other events may also have rented out spaces outside that. Alright, the youth conference has officially got on my nerves. I came a long way to come to this convention and this is ruining the con.

The youth conference started forcing a segregation between the katsucon attendees and their attendees in hallways. Forcing katsucon attendees on one side of the hallway, and their people on another side of the hallway.

On top of this, certain elevators lead to the place where the youth conference is held. When cosplayers get down there, they get plenty dirty looks and there is a general air of unwelcomeness. The katsu attendees are paying for their hotel rooms and should be able to use hotel facilities without feeling threatened.

I could tolerate them renting the gazebo and a wing, but this has gone too far. Concerning the gazebo, it's barely been used. There are guards guarding it against "anime people" as they put it in their own words.

What the hell. I hope we get some sort of compensation from the hotel. This is NOT funny.

Stop fear mongering. If it was such a problem, Katsucon and BBYO wouldn't have come to an agreement on using the Gazebo, which was wide open for use by cosplayers today and presumably tomorrow. This "agreement" came to be after two fist fights broke out because the BBYO staffers were rudely harassing cosplayers because the BBYO attendees were talking to them and taking photos. Some people here witnessed a green lantern cosplayer being meanly told off by BBYO staffers IN A PUBLIC AREA to stop "impressing their kids". Eventually some people got fed up and decided to resort to punching the BBYO staff. BBYO figured that they couldn't just throw money at the hotel anymore.

It's 12:20 PM, it's sunday, the con is almost over. I feel we got fucked over by the gaylord (Both us and the convention itself). This problem singlehandedly ruined the convention for me, it's hands down the worst con I've been to in a year, and I've done Anime Boston 2012, Ota2012, and Magfest 2013 to name a few cons I've been to, so that says a lot.

You know, it never fails. After a con, /cgl/ comes to the consensus that it was "shit", regardless of how good it was or not. Happened for every con I've ever been to the past 3 years- for AUSA, Katsu, and Otakon, specifically.

You know what, fuck you guys, this was an amazing con. All 9 panels I attended were lovely (yes, NINE, as opposed to AUSA and Ota which I was only able to get to 4ish each), the Artist Alley had a bunch of great artists, the video programming was great (sad I missed it though). The only bad part was the dealer's room. It seemed... rather lackluster this year. I can't quite put my finger on why. At any rate, it somewhat infuriates me to hear such smacktalk just because another con occurred at the same time.

Of course from how you talk, you're probably a troll.

I'll admit the con had its faults. It had major trouble with line control, and once more had problems with guest scheduling. I think one of the VA guests didn't even have a signing.

But really, there were no problems with the Jewish convention that I know about. I even talked to the head of... Live ops, I think, and he said that the only bad occurrence he'd heard of was that someone tried converting some of the BBYO attendees to Christianity. But does that really sound like anyone who'd attend an anime con?

In short, if you didn't enjoy it, fine, but no, it was NOT fail as it was amazing for me.

Despite the fact these boots were in style all winter and fall we scoured the malls for good deals and could only find anything in size 8 and below. She's a size 10 and I'm a 7.5 and we needed to match, it was really frustrating and I'm so happy to have finally found something.

tl;dr version, people don't have a lot of respect for her because, while she is a very skilled cosplayer who obviously puts a lot of time & effort into her costumes, she makes the focal point of most costumes on her boobs.

She got implants to make her breasts huge, then shows them off in revealing costumes, and then when people comment/notice them she gets offended. "I'm more than a pair of breasts!" and so forth, but yet she makes little to no effort to make more modes costumes.

I think she's done maybe 2 or 3 chest-covering costumes, ever.

Worst one I went to was that go go gijinka panel. Didn't have my glasses and they had their whole panel via ipad because they didn't have a cord to cconnect it to the projector. It kinda sucked (for the parts I stayed) they really didn't talk so much about what makes a good gijinka than "have the characteristics of that character" and "it doesn't need to be a bikini!" (big fuckn duh) it was mostly "look at my costumes!"

The masquerade was decent (a liiiiittle bit too much Gangnam Style, but it's not like they all planned with each other to rape us with it), but I feel really bad for the ones who just want to show their cosplay off. It's nothing to knock, since a good one takes hours and hours of hard work, but it's just way too awkward for the MCs to come out each time, introduce them, and then have them strut on the stage for 20 seconds. There were only a couple of costumes that were truly eye-catching enough to get the crowd going. I say we keep the MCs on stage, group a few of the cosplay together, and have them introduce them as they come out. If they don't have a little act planned (like the Zac from FF), they can just do a twirl or two, a curtsey, and then line up. Way less awkward.

Speaking of the Zack, performances like his really make me cringe. I get that I might just be nit-picking here, but if you're going to do a performance involving ANY sort of choreography (e.g. forms, dances, etc.), I really wish they knew what they were doing. As someone who's done martial arts for a long time, it's incredibly discomforting watching someone make a large swing without a proper wide stance, make flimsy movements without pop, etc. As for dancing, the idol group should really have worked on making sure all their dancers were enthusiastic about dancing (only two or three of them seemed to really be into it) and actually in time with each other. I know it's pretty difficult to do, but it would make it worlds more entertaining, rather than forcing me to only focus on the one or two (both who weren't in sync with each other, either) who actually seemed to know how to dance properly.

Okay guys, the overall experience was not good for me, largely due to my own ignorance getting me back under the thumb of the naziriffic volunteer's department. But other than that, I just felt squeezed between the two worlds, not being able to join my people for religious celebrations.

Then reading all their candidate sheets made me feel better, because they were offering the same old Establishment Jewry shit about "involvement", "apathy", and "meaning". Stay deluded, B'nai B'rith.

On a note related to the second greentext above: The system of blocked pathways and public zones was just like Occupied Palestine. Except, you know, instead of a people being oppressed and the all-around risk of death, it's nerds being inconvenienced. Otherwise, it's exactly the same. Uh huh.
I was told that it was Yaya who actually had the clout to negotiate (read: BURST OUT IN A HISSY FIT) the gazebo zone back for us. So a big Todah Rabbah to her, if this story is true.

On security shift, I made a couple of friends with BBYO staffers... but that's probably only because I was wearing my kippah out in the air (as opposed to hiding it under a hat, as in previous cons). I was also NOT a supreme asshole, which probably helped. I was told that there were indeed some asshat trolls, but the AZAs and the BBGs weren't too affected.

When I talked to someone at the end of the con, the story through the rumor mill was that BBYO was BANNED from ever coming back. It seems that these teens in what is technically a fraternity had caused even more damage than the geeks and social outcasts did. So while Katsu will be back for another year, the Jews won't. I don't think there was a time when I was more embarrassed for and angry at my people.

Simple: Because it's NOT mainly a religious thing. The B'NAI B'RITH is adamantly non-sectarian, and its focus is on "Jewish Peoplehood", which can only mean three things: Intermarriage, Israel, and Anti-Semitism. The BBYO, by extension, is focused of fostering strong Jewish identity via Jews-meeting-Jews and Israel trips. I'll spare you my Jewy opinions about this approach to Jewish people/Judaism.

>> No.6634240

By the way, I now take this moment to repent for my sins against God and my fellow human beings.

I am DEEPLY sorry, Katsucon attendees and other hotel guests, for collaborating with the hotel and the BBYO in blocking off major thoroughfares, all for only lousy volunteer hours. Even though I respect my fellow security workers on all three ends, the fact of the matter is that this policy is unjustifiable. You don't need to resort to checkpoints and blockage of major thoroughfares in order to "protect your kinderlach".

Ugh don't get me started, I grew up going to a Jewish summer camp for many tears and I knew so many kids who openly wore IDF shirts and went on those utterly retarded ~homecoming~ trips to Israel, some of my best friends got roped into going on those by their hoity toity parents and came back with horror stories.

I'm just glad my family is really anti-Israeli policy and instilled me with an ability to see past that shit...

Oh, and not to add fuel to the fire... but their entire shindig cost $799 PER PERSON. Our cost PALES in comparison to theirs, but then again they have dinners and rooms covered. Just thought I'd say that withdrawing liability for attendee behavior in hotel rooms is a smart move of EVERY geek con out there.

But still... the fact of the matter is, the kids' parents were willing to shell out THAT much so that their kids can have this... leadership... and... identity... thingy... whatever.

Well, think about it. $400 a night for a room, $25-100 for a super nice dinner, and then there's actually renting the con space. Sounds a bit overpriced, but still kinda reasonable.

The BBYO staffers were nice, but I heard of many stories that the high schoolers (ages 11-16) were rude and nasty to the Katsucon goers. Even though many times they were orderly and calm, even during the the separation of the cons.

On zero day of Katsucon, the BBYO con had a impromptu rave at night. I actually recorded footage of that rave for about ten or so minutes before I was escorted out by BBYO staff.

(Fun Fact: BBYO was actually seperated from the main B'nai B'rith organization, it's just an initialism (Source: One of the main staffers))

Now for the anime convention itself, it's safe to say that the Katsucon curse has been lifted. The real problem and curse is the organization of the con!

On Saturday night/Sunday morning, someone chucked a bottle off an upper floor balcony onto the BBYO section of the atrium (definitely chucked; just dropping it would have hit the penthouse balconies on top of the ballroom). I saw a Tumblr post from a guy on the sixteenth floor who said a drunk girl mad about being kicked out of a room party did it.

Anyone know anything about this morning's fire alarm?

Defying Gravity panel description was a deceptive. It sounded like they were gonna discuss things like how to build decent wing harnesses or how to make floating structures but it was just how to use insulation foam, wonderflex, sintra etc. In other words the same shit you'd eventually learn trolling cgl.

Dramatic Fanfic Readings was okay, left pretty early since they were picking a lot of fics that were intentionally bad. It's more fun when the author is taking their shitty fic seriously.

The Composing Vidya music panel was great. The guy really knew his stuff and gave some really helpful live demos.

Went to WCS and it was painfully obvious some people didn't do their research. WTF was up with that Alice skit? I feel like some of them were pretty lackluster for WCS but would have been great for a regular masq like the Monster Hunter one.

Artist Alley was probably the most bland I've ever seen.

As for Yaya I have a sweet, shy friend who really wanted a picture of her after WCS. She was just standing in the open hall talking to someone and there was a small crowd of people with cameras gathered including my friend. They were all politely waiting to ask for a photo and then Yaya was done talking to the guy and just left. I understand she makes money selling her prints but I felt super bad for my friend because she's so shy and probably blames herself for not speaking up.

Had to get a wig as soon as the dealer's room opened because of a derp up and got a perfect one at Five Wits that styled great with a 20 minute rush job. Did not expect to buy from them but totally recommended.

I think my only overall issue this year besides what everyone has already bawwed about was that things seemed to close up pretty early compared to a lot of cons I've been to.

Most dealer's rooms close at 5 or 6pm, basically standard store hours (given they usually open at 10am). Also dealers start earlier, often 6am for load in or set up. Nobody really wants to work a 16 hour day to make a few more sales until 10pm.

>It's already in bad taste to wear such a thing to a public con, doubly so knowing there's a Jewish con next door.
Seeing as it's just fantasy and not real, the symbol isn't really offensive unless you're actively yelling out "Fuck the jews" or somesuch.
As for the jewish convention next door, there isn't a chance that the person wearing that costume knew until after it was finished

>Just so that my followers know, it was confirmed by a hotel manager on Sunday that BBYO is not ever invited back to the Gaylord due to the rules broken by them and the insane amount of damage. (Last count was 8 rooms needing fumigating due to them smoking in them with broken alarms.) I have seen plenty of con-damage in my life throughout the northeast, but from what I’d seen and experience this weekend really made me feel that BBYO was a retreat for spoiled white kids.
