I just wanted to say thanks for doing this thread. I've been very uninspired with cosplay lately and this makes me want to dust off an old SM costume for katsucon <3 or maybe make that Saban costume after all..

OK YES I FOUND IT IN ARCHIVES ANON. It's one of the early concept drawings, since it has the cape. At first I thought it was panties/bloomers, but you can actually see the fabric folding up into a fold on the skirt, so it's an underskirt for sure. Pic is huge, I did not resize so you could see the whole thing.

the concept art ones are tricky because she did like 20 of them. and they all have tiny differences in jewelry colors etc. I did one too and its different from all of these lol.
you guys should check out mangastyle.net, they have all the artbooks. you can get a translated materials collection from either soul-hunter.com or miss dream. that has some really interesting footnotes in it. those are really good resources for reference pics!

I was talking about a stiff underskirt of organza/netting/what have you yes (leaving out any weird traditional stays or hoops), but it could easily have a design on the edges. The concept of crinoline has changed a bit from just the type of fabric to simply the purpose of the item (to give poof) I think. I get what you're saying though. I'd say in that picture it looks like a short petti with a detail on the edge. Was I looking for this picture for two people, or are you also >>6600749 ?

well, it *is* concept art. a lot of what she drew in early pictures isn't apparent in later ones, like overly shiny fabrics. like how her gloves almost look like vinyl there. I think it would be cool to incorporate this detail into a costume from any season. but it's not wrong to not include it either.

"This is a color picture from the title page of the first issue with the serial. I was still wavering on Sailor Moon’s costume design, and drew this while worrying about it. I waver a lot. so maybe she doesn't outright call it "concept art" but saying "the design is completely different now" is pretty close.
it's commonly referred to in fandom as "concept moon" as well.
the point is just that it's not a good reference for making a costume. now you're just being picky.

Do you consider the 'Scouts' in StarS as real scouts? Do you also consider Endymion as Sailor Earth? I always counted them all... So what would be the total then? 29? depends what you mean, the starlights and kakyuu are definitely real scouts. technically the animamates stole their star seeds from real scouts.
most/every planet in the galaxy has a scout/senshi/protector so really there would be millions. when people talk about the main characters sometimes they will say "solar system senshi" to clarify.
tuxedo mask is not a scount. naoko actually said only women can be senshi, so while he has the earth's star crystal, he's not an actual senshi.
Queen serenity is iffy.. iirc she possessed the ginzuishu as an object, not her star seed, like NQS does. she was probably one in the past but lost her transformation powers like NQS does. I don't remember for sure.

Ha, i read a fanfic with a Sailor Sun once, well i would enjoy your panel i am sure. But i live down South haha. Hope it's awesome. Did Naoko ever give any symbolism or reason for the seven pointed star on Saturn's chest/choker? Also i always thought it was weird she said it was seven pointed when she draws it like a damn porcupine. Or maybe i read `seven pointed` in some kind of concept art discussion. I was the one digging around for that picture simply to show that she has been drawn with an underskirt/petti/crinoline whatever you want to call it. My opinion is they all wear one under the skirts, but Naoko doesn't have the time to draw it /shrug. But that's also not my call to make obviously, just an opinion, but the opinion that they do not officially wear something under the skirts is also not something we can say 100% unless Naoko comes out and says it officially. The main point was I don't see really ANY costumes that have the skirt done correctly (obviously my own opinion) because either they go for a 'swooshy' satin mess (I don't care if it's 100 dollar a yard bridal satin, it looks cheap if it's shiny, to me) or they stick to a cotton, which is too limp without something underneath it to pull up the pleats, especially on the hips, those pleats are always shown 'sticking out' to the side, and that's really the only way to achieve that look: with a crinoline/petti/whatever underneath. And to add in, Naoko draws the skirts both 'swooshy' and stiff in the manga, so it's not going against authenticity to have a stiff, non shiny skirt for a manga version. I don't think the skirts are even colored shiny in the first place.

I was going to add he had some kind of psychic powers, but I couldn't remember if it was with other people or objects. And the earth thing, yes he can sense if the earth is under attack and what not. Like I said before, he completes Usagi... she wouldn't be able to draw forth power if it weren't for her desire to protect the people she cares about and them believing in her abilities. So yeah, he's not useless imo.

I can kind of believe it if it does, but at the same time I keep thinking american translators looked at it, saw the sailor school uniforms and sailor collars on the senshi uniforms and just decided to call her Sailor Moon. Like I said I know I must sound stupid (I'm not super into the show I just love the designs and watched the hell out of it as a kid, and read the manga at some point in time though i want to read it again), but I'm not good enough in japanse to translate it and I dont trust the google translate in this case.

I liked her crown and how much work she put into the corset for the dress.

The choice of colors confuses me though. Natural blond hair, natural gold crown, and then cartoony yellow dress trim.

I supposed she didn't think about it much and worked with what she had.

Also she said her dress was so tight she could barely walk. Well for a mermaid shape dress you leave enough room for the knees and then add a couple layers of gathered tulle below the knees to puff out the shape.

But again, she can't know everything, sewing is a learning process

So, one cosplay I really would like to do is Palla Palla, either in her senshi form or in her amazon quartet outfit. However, does anyone have any good cosplay pictures of her? because I have only seen crap ones, and since her hair is such a weird style I would like to see if it is possible to make it look good

It's really just a bun with parted bangs in the front. The things with balls on the end are attached to the headband.

Her bangs are Usagi-style, so just remember 1. they are very very short right around the part and 2. they don't get super fucking long at the sides. Think 90s hair. Actually, think 80s hair.

Oops, adding on - you're probably going to run into problems with the headband squishing the bangs down in front... you're gonna have to experiment with that. It might look okay with the headband over them or you might have to sacrifice a little accuracy and have some of the bangs sit over the headband instead.
