I've seen too many feminine looking crossplayers so the males I've seen by comparison look good. I try to give girls who try their credit, but too many of them are tiny awkward tomboys that end up looking like manlets. Their perfect "yaoi" version of a guy, not realistically what even a teenage boy does.

I think it's mostly because mostly girls and gay guys come on /cgl/ and girls just wanna rip on other girls because of personal body issues and the guys are gay so it's kinda the same with them.

Dudes, there are all types of bodies out there. I have seen (and I am sure you have seen) women with broad shoulders and manly hands, there is hardly any doubt that there are some dudes out there with slender shoulders and small hands.
I've seen a few, in fact, I'm sure some of us have, too; if not, then blame it all on photoshoop.

I think the double standard is due to women being much more common in cosplay. It's like, if you see a really shitty Homestuck, you think it's just that. But, if you were to see a really shitty cosplay of something uncommon, you'd be a lot more forgiving. It's not fair, but it's understandable.

I have been crossplaying for 3 years now and so far if I make it poorly people will still think it's pretty good but I have pretty high standards. Also, my friends who helps me out are so damn good with make up and such so it's only once have been a bad crossplay.
If girls crossdresses as guys, who gives a shit? Let them do what they want. As long as they arent doing something inappropiate or illegal let them do what they want.

Guys tend not to crossplay, I've seen, unless they know they have the body to pull it off.
Girls, I've seen, tend not to care. Lots of them don't bother binding, or trying to make their figure less noticeable.
And beside that, it's easier to find a boy with a girlish face than a girl with a boyish face, so their face shape alone makes it easier to pass.

All the Western men I've seen try to crossplay always look really bad and usually have a terrible make-up job... Maybe I'm being overly critical here, but most of the guy's who try just don't have the facial structure for it.

It's a little bit worrying since I'm about to do a crossplay myself and now I'm worried I'll look like a horrible monster :( Are there any other make-up guides out there for male to female shit besides the typical things on the cosplay sites? Just like, a basic guide on contouring and eye highlighting and all that shit?

That's true, you wouldn't reeeeally know until the costume comes off. Just curious is all. It's something I've never heard discussed, probably because there isn't much to say about it.

I think 2 and 4 are a little debatable. I will agree that people like purposefully bad male crossplay, and really convincing male crossplay.

I think when a guy puts in a good effort and still looks like a dude in a dress, it's like, the costume is nice, so yeah he gets positive comments for the effort, but I think the obviously male face with the frilly cuteness makes people uneasy regardless. It just stands out so much.

And then if he tries hard and fails, it's pretty obvious he was trying. I've seen it a lot and just makes me so uncomfortable, like feeling awkward and uneasy for him. You can really tell by how hard they tried with the way the costume turned out, and their reaction to being seen in it. The ones being bad on purpose go all out to be bad, hairy legs, shirt too tight showing off a gut, beard, and such. One trying harder and failing will likely have shaved legs, and face, and make up and other markers of trying to be convincing.

I think it's overall easier for girls to crossplay, because even when they look bad it's not super weird looking. Not to mention that a good amount of anime/game males from Japanese creations are young and feminine looking to begin with. Wearing clothes that could actually be tomboyishly cute on girls.

But that's not to say I think if you can't be convincing, don't go for it. If it makes you feel good, even if you're not very convincing, go for broke, but if you really want to be seen as convincing, and it's just not working, maybe stick to photos and photoshop that shit a bit.

I've really been wanting to crossplay lately (I'm female) but I have a really feminine figure. I'm not talking sexy or anything, just like really wide hips and I have meat on my thighs.. just curvaceous in the trunk area I guess. The thing about a guy crossplaying is that it does take some balls. Lets face it, a girl dressing up as a guy is more socially acceptable, if a guy does it he HAS to do it as a joke or it just won't work out 98% of the time. Sure there are some guys that can pull it off legitimately, but for the most part they will still look stupid and manly thus having to make it a joke. Meanwhile if a girl fucks up, sure she gets shittalked for doing a bad costume, but overall its still socially acceptable.
I know I might be cosplaying sailor scouts with my sister to a con soon, but I know for a fact I'm going to look fucking retarded, but its something that you can get over if you just think of it as a joke.

I think people are gradually becoming less and less amused with guys crossplaying as a joke. Yes, you're a hairy man in a frilly pink dress. It's silly, we get it. It's getting way old. Some people are still going to crack up over it, but overall I think it's getting less popular.

I have a crossplay question i guess. I'm a girl and i tend to like cossplaying as boys more since i'm not really into wearing revealing clothes and there are more male characters i like. You're fine from what i can see. The thing that really kills male crossplay is being really barrel chested. strong shoulders can be hidden with good costume choice and padding up the boob area... I'm kinda cursed with a slightly thicker chest but I'm just more careful with presenting the right angles to photographers at events.

Yo, I'm a full figured crossplayer girl. Spanx and knowing what characters to pick. Like long coats help hide everything, but anything that cuts at the waist will just emphasis your girly figure. Pads will help somewhat but the only time they've really made a difference for me is when I'm wearing a zentai suit.

I want to crossplay, but I'm a little worried about my jaw, especially if I can't frame it with my hair. I've found that on a webcam, I can get away with literally shaping my jaw thinner with black eyeshadow (pic related, though I accidentally smudged it a little on my left side), but obviously that'd look retarded in real life. I know how to contour with normal makeup, but I feel like there's only so much I can do. Any advice?

Alot of it is dependent on the character you want to crossplay... like you said, wigs can help frame the face etc. And don't worry about your jawline too much, if you can contour well, it should turn out fine on pictures (some magical effect of the flash flattening your image or some shindig). As long as you don't overdo the contrast, you should also look fine during the con as well.

Yuugi is awesome if you are abit muscled. Mokou's costume is one of those odd ones that look nice in 2D but rarely translate over well into 3D though (especially if you are intending to play up the manly side)... And if your body is like the one in that pic you posted... I don't forsee much problems actually. You'll be surprised what you can do with some clever padding, a steel boned corset, nice choice of costumes and flattering camera angles.

There's a guy that hits up pretty much every con in my state and the surrounding states and he always has really nice costumes... But he's a fat, middleaged man who crossplays from anything and everything he can, but without taking any effort to not make himself look like comicbook guy in a dress.

Likewise, you can get those scrawny, scraggly kids who probably could pull off better crossplay, but they just start yo walking their awkward asses around a convention in a school uniform with no one talking to them because they look creepy and weird instead of being that HI-LARIOUS crossplayer life of the party sort of guy.
