So I left a couple of messages saying I wanted a cosplay made of a Redmage's AF armor from final fantasy 11 on a couple of websites.
Just wondering, how much should I expect to pay? no props, just the suit itself. I want to know what's reasonable to haggle.

>> No.6599199

material cost: 75-250
work cost: 50-80% on top of that, or more

If you pay less than $150, expect a bad costume. If you pay more than $350, check their other work. If they do good work, this is reasonable. If their work isnt up to your standards, don't do it.

350? really? I was going mid 700.

....that's a fucking whack ass made in china number.

That's the price of a store bought costume.

Do you have the experience to make a better estimate than that anon or are you just running around chiming in to shit you don't know about?

Yeah because I used to do a lot of store buying and nothing but commissions and will tell you right fucking now if you pay a commissioner $300 you're going to get some low tier shit.

And yeah, that's also an average price for store bought costumes of that, for lack of a better word, calibur.

no...no, actually most of the store-bought pre-made stuff out there is in the $100 and less category, $150 for the more complicated stuff. in fact

which, although is the female version, is exactly what he's looking for.

taking into consideration both the material cost and the effort needed to make the costume, yes. $350. If you are at mid $700 you are getting ripped the fuck off. $500 max for costume alone, and thats only if you know for a fact that everything is going to be perfect by previewing other costumes made by whoever you commision.

This. A FFXI Red Mage AF should not cost $700. No. Never. NO!

Also, Red Mage AF? Seriously? Everyone and their mom has done this fucking costume. Fuck, why not do Mithra RSE while you at it?

looool right. If he goes to a mid range commissioner in the states he could get something decent for 305 yes, but anyone with more experience is going to charge at least 600. There's applique details, armor, gloves...if you do it in good materials, real leather, you're looking at least 300 in materials, not including labor and shipping.

>Red Mage AF 1
>using real leather, ever

No. If you use real leather for this costume, you have no idea how to pick fabrics. The only thing that even comes close to looking like leather is the tabard section. And the applique details? AF 1 isn't exactly something overly complex. The only details that are applique-esque are on the shoulder pads and knee pads, which are also not leather.

oh right! Cause craft foam is gonna look awesome.

Who said craft foam? Those pieces aren't leather, plain and simple.

I'm only posting because you want to cosplay from FFXI. I love you, Anon. Polite sage.

coming back to this post with a clear head, i believe your price is just coming from a misunderstanding of the source material. AF 1 armors in FFXI aren't really high-quality armor. They are designed to look and act like baby's first job armor. The best materials for fully accurate AF1 armor would be mid-quality fabrics. If it looks a bit cheap...its actually pretty accurate. Hell, the midsection in game looks like a cheap matte costume vinyl you'd find on a Halloween costume you could pick up at walmart. Even the Relic set doesnt look too high quality for some of the classes. Really, only the Emperyean sets, and some of the non-class specific stuff, have to be high quality materials to look right.

There's a difference between doing this costume and doing it right.
