The level of difficulty is different, since it's not 'basic outfits'. They were the ones who did the big Felt group recently, and they're the Condesce with the Darkleer who gets posted pretty frequently. I agree partway with you, but to whiteknight a little - I think the Megidos generally have a good amount of buried anger. Think Handmaid, Damara, dead/bot Aradias. That internal disdain for the world is covered with complacency or sass (Damara), and that's something difficult to show in photos.
Rose also seems a person who keeps her feelings close to her heart, and grimdark Rose exemplified, at most, simmering rage until she came face-to-face with Bec Noir.

I think DM tried to show extra glee as god tier (though there never was a real shoot) and a sort of serenity as dreamer. If she eventually (whenever she's feeling better) balanced her hidden-anger Megidos with happy shoots of god tier and alive Aradia, that might ease some of the criticism.

i agree. i think part of the issue is being afraid to look ridiculous on camera haha. you're right that i'm more used to still shots- it's much easier to be confident in pulling exaggerated expressions etc in a still photo than it is on video. i think it's me being hesitant because i don't really like how my smile looks so i keep my mouth shut a lot. you make a good point- i think i do focus too much on my expression so that probably lends itself to looking a bit stiff sometimes. i'm going to try to practice being more natural in the future- i think sometimes i get it right but sometimes i definitely don't because during certain photos my thought process is like "am i doin it rite?????" and my concentration on doin it rite turns out to be doin it dull.

My best advise is to practice in the mirror. Use several expression you want to try, and just make different poses in the mirror. Eventually you will find a couple poses you will really enjoy and muscle memory will take in. Plus, sometimes silly pictures where you look stupid are the best! It looks real and it is unexpected from the stereotype "good picture". Don't be afraid to let yourself loose, and have fun with the cosplay. Even if you get a couple bad pictures out of it, I am sure you will have more fun. Especially with GT Aradia and Damara. They have a lot of really fun canon expressions.

i have a lot of (long, boring) aradiabot opinions but they basically boil down to agreeing with you. in my shoot with the lovely ceriene i did try to venture into the angry expressions but unfortunately i discovered that my dental distortions teeth made it really hard to open my mouth wide or contort it without it looking really awful (the top of them would kind of... i don't know, 'pop' under my lip, it was weird). i plan to wear aradiabot one more time later this year with some touchups (and her time machine props) and i'll be trying a different method for the teeth. one of the main reasons i want to wear it again is to re-shoot it with those exact expressions. hopefully i won't disappoint!

Honestly I am getting tired of always doing Homestuck, but I am so nervous to do other cosplays because I know my group of friends will always be willing to do Homestuck with me (Plus with WV I need people around because indoors it gets hard to see.) Ben Nye is really good. There are spray and power sealant. Because ben nye is a cream make up I recommend the powder. I have also used Paradise which is a water-activated make up that works well, but it take a bit longer to apply to get it even. However it is really hard for it to come off if you use a barrier spray and then a final seal.

Except there's nothing to "make up for." That's why "low tier" was changed to pretty tier. Pretty tier is not necessarily a bad or inferior thing! Think of it as a separate and nebulously equal tier to mid-tier. Not everyone on the pretty list is bad at craftmanship. Not everyone on the mid list is spectacular.
For instance, I wouldn't say that thevvioletprince is anywhere near to blackbanshee in terms of skill or potential, but the former has cosplayed many different characters while the latter has only done Roxy, and that is the distinction.
Lindzar is very attractive, and applies makeup well and dresses up well. But until they tackle a more-technically-difficult Dave cosplay or enter the general consciousness as someone who's not solely Dave Strider, they suit the pretty category better than the mid one.

my advice is really to just dye your hair as soon before the con as possible--literally the night before or morning of if you can, even if your hair is dark brown, so you can have the same super-intense black a wig will give, and style the hell out of it. use a lot of hairspray, keep it with you for touchups through the day. i use my real hair for karkat and kanaya when i can and most people don't realize it's not a wig! i think it's easier to get away with on short spiky styles, but if you really want to not use a wig, just make your hair look as much like a wig as possible.

Notes have nothing to do with it, it's quality of costume construction and she hasn't done anything for Homestuck beyond t-shirts and jeans. Compare her to the other cosplayers in pretty tier. Between quality of their photographs and better design and application of makeup, she just doesn't fit.

I leave it to you guys). Relissoawesome/Awkwanaut for being fairly prolific and running events. Tastysuey for being that one light-up Sollux--it's only one costume so far, but he's already improved upon it vastly and I'm pretty sure is planning to do the Psiioniic and other HS costumes. Thighhighs for doing two very notable/not-just-shirt-and-pants costumes, learning quickly and improving upon her mistakes, running a few small events here and there and doing a thorough FAQ of her Condesce--however, I don't know that she's planning on doing any more HS cosplay, so idk, maybe not. The vvioletprince for being pretty prolific, talented, and a part of that whole Ceriene scene. Ineloquentformalities for her amazing wig work, big huge cosplay groups, and all the help she's give to the fandom--her Condesce wig tutorial, the free horns she's made, all the advice-heavy asks, etc etc. Also maybe ornerymint--she's done some HS cosplay but is ESPECIALLY worthwhile to follow for her HS cocktails.

Also, seconding a placement for Cancerously somewhere on this list. You may bitch about her, but her event organizing is an absolute cornerstone of the east coast HS scene.

Hokaido is alright at midtier. The name is familiar but I can't recall any particular cosplay they've done, so they haven't yet achieved the "omg" of recognition from me.

Awkwanaut (who used to be relissoawesome) I'd like to have at pretty-tier, actually. The most impressive construction thing she's done yet has been Sailor Aradia. I wasn't a fan of the construction on her GT Aradia, and she's done starter outfits for Roxy and Karkat.
Zillywhooooore at pretty-tier for the same reason blackbanshee is there - she's done one gorgeous Kanaya dress and is working on Porrim, and I think that's the extent of her HS work.

The rest of the photoset is the same. You can't see much of her outfit, beside the stupid eye-dots(that are even on the wrong side), the fact she couldn't even attempt to hide the headband she has her horns on under her hair, having her fangs blue while the rest of her teeth stay white, and seemingly having done a shitty job taking some kid's butterfly wings from a halloween costume and making it look like her god-tier wings.
It's a shit cosplay, but she looks pretty so people praise her.

This isn't a matter of people who aren't you being boohoohoo babyish tumblrfags, this is a matter of you being randomly, bizarrely aggressive. Ok, her headband shows. But her horns are nice, her outfit is well sewn, the wings are actually pretty nice and clearly not just Party City butterfly wings, her makeup is clean (it's clear in other pics her fangs are just slightly stained blue from her lipstick, it's a tiny human error that happens to everyone) etc etc. Why are you so bitter about this one decent chick when there are SO MANY worse HS cosplayers to get angry about?

First off, her fangs aren't blue.
Second off, the eye and the wing are on opposite sides. If you want to say that the wing and eye should be flipped, that WOULD be a good point in any comic other than one where the characters can "flip themselves turnways". The quality of the outfit is pretty good, and you can't honestly expect someone to make wings out of cellophane or sumsuch for an event where they might be destroyed (And they look fine anyway)
I don't even personally find her attractive, but her cosplay is completely fine.
