Something as outlandish as Anime and Manga are some of the highest forms of escapism. Because they are so far from the clutches of reality, broken people adore it.

The problem with cosplay is the suspension of disbelief is what attracts everyone to it. Admit it: when you put on a complete costume, you are channelling that character.

That creates a massive disconnect between your inner monologue and the external plurality of real life.

I think subcultures attract those that feel like outsiders, especially when you're younger, so if you're into a niche interest or dress a certain way you're more likely to find belonging.
