I'm gonna cosplay as zabuza at some point during the next year... What are the rules about brining swords to anime conventions? I assume I can't make it out of metal... But is wood okay?

tl;dr - can i bring an 8 foot long wooden sword to anime conventions?

>> No.6596990

simple answer:

it depends on the convention

all of them have different rules. but for sure, NO metal

>> No.6596989

Nigga you're retarded. Just make it out of foam.

Check the individual con rules, test the weight of the prop before committing to it. It may not seem heavy now, but you'll come to loathe the damn thing after a few hours of navigating a crowded convention center dragging around a prop that suddenly feels like its a million pounds.

Also, don't make it 8 feet, you colossal fucking goon.

you're retarded

why do people come here asking for help and then refuse to listen to what anyone tells them?

go back to coscom

does balsa wood come in large sizes?? I usually just see it in the usual 4x24 for model building and other small craft.

Just...don't use wood, get the pink insulation foam. You can cut and sand it like wood and you can swing it around with confidence and ease. Seal it with paper mache then paint it.

Seriously, big wood swords for cosplay just won't work. Insulation foam makes a hell of a lot more sense and has about the same strength and density as balsa. (balsa is also expensive in comparison)

i asked a question
the second person answered my question
i thanked them

also i dont ever cosplay, which is why initially i wanted wood - foam sounded lame. Anyway this guy said exactly what i need to know about making the sword. --v

I also say make the sword to YOUR proportions since it is a basic principal to do so, if you were 5"5' instead and wanted to make Zabuza you would of course match the sword to your size.

Making it bigger than your actual self would just be stupid and unnecessary.

If you do match his proportions, good that's fine, just make sure you proportion the sword out in relation to your body measurements (ex the handle is about as long as his elbow to fingertips, and the sword as a whole goes up to his chin at least)

also for the handle you can probably stab a wooden dowel into the foam for it (they sell these in craft stores and is just a nice straight wooden stick in various diameters) or you can use pvc pipe.

but once you get the foam, you'll find it's really easy to work with.

this person made a tutorial for it for May's Anchor but I can't find it right now

Rule #1 of bringing props to conventions: "fuck the police".

Seriously. The rules they institute are stupid, serve no purpose and protect no one. At one point BlizzCon's rules stated you could only bring INFLATABLE props. I kid you not. Convention authorities are just trying not to get sewed and try to put the burden on the attendee. This is why I always carry a tiny pair of scissors whenever a voluntee at AX feels like putting a brightly-colored ziptie on my prop. "Oops, I didn't realize I needed to go to the peace-bonding station, thank you so much. I'll be sure and not remove this stupid thing the moment you leave from view."

I've never known anyone to ever get kicked out of a convention for bringing a prop made from an allegedly "wrong" material. And I've been ignoring such rules since forever with zero consequences. Everyone should do the same.

I know a guy who carrys an 8 foot long wooden Zabuza sword at every con he goes to. Doesn't cosplay, just has the sword. Pretty heavy, but he manages. No idea how he gets it in each time though.

The rules are there for the safety of others.
People with tall props hitting sprinklers, large horns/wings hitting people in the eye, long dragging tails/dresses that people may trip/step on(pic related), huge costumes blocking areas, real firearms/live steel, etc.
Yes most people are responsible, but you can't trust an entire convention of people mostly in their teens to be orderly.

What Monty Python skit convention do you go to where people are destroying the landscape and getting maimed from cosplays?

Also some of the rules are there because of local law. AX's stupid "your fake gun must be a stupid color" rule? That unfortunately reflects CA law:

2008 Dangerous Weapons Control Law Chapter 6 Section 12556
(13) A device where the entire exterior surface of the device is white, bright red, bright orange, bright yellow, bright green, bright blue, bright pink, or bright purple, either singly or as the predominant color in combination with other colors in any pattern, or where the entire device is constructed of transparent or translucent materials which permits unmistakable observation of the device's complete contents. Merely having an orange tip as provided in federal law and regulations does not satisfy this requirement. The entire surface must be colored or transparent or translucent.

California here, possibly attending Sakuracon, trying to figure out which of the following is possibly allowed:

>a single fake (non-sharp) arrow, no bow
>wooden knife about 6" blade, think like a pointier cleaver
>same knife in plastic
>approximately 20 retractable-blade joke knives
>switchblade, prop (is this even made?)
>wooden short swords, with scabbards
>about 10 resin "throwing daggers" partially scabbarded; think Berserk
>juggling clubs

I'm pretty sure none of these are allowed, but it'd be nice if some were.

Sounds like you've got adware, kid.

OP, just make it out of foam. The material will force you to make a better prop than wood will, because you'll have to put in more effort and will be more dissatisfied with it looking bad. It's also the best material to use for this scenario.
