If you just paint the model magic first then applied Modge Podge then acrylics should be okay to use. I usually use thick acrylic paints or 'Folk Art' brand that you can get at any hobby store.

If you put the podge on top first, then I'm not too sure if acrylics would be okay to apply? I've never done it that way, sorry to say.

I'm trying to make Jiji's sweater from Kuragehime!
I'm using a mostly synthetic sweater and I've found that if I water down fabric paint it actually goes on fairly smoothly, with very little paint texture, but it's kind of sparkly. I'm using tulip's "soft" fabric paint, which isn't intrinsically sparkly, so... I don't know what's causing that?
Lime was too bright, Green was... not right. Too blue maybe? I haven't gotten a chance to test out the olive color but I think it will be very much close enough for the light color, but what do about the darker color?

1. How can I cut down on sparkle? And/or why is it doing that?

1.5. or, how can I ensure smooth coloring with sharpies?
2. Between Green, Olive (which is very close to the light green that I'm aiming for), and Lime, how can I mix those colors to create the dark green seen on Jiji's sweater?
3. Is there any way at all to use both sharpie and fabric paint together without it looking ridiculous?
4. Is there a better way of doing this that doesn't involve texture or knitting my own cardigan?

Does anyone know if it's possible to change the color of boots easily?

I bought these boots because they were listed as 'light gray' but look white in every photo I saw of them. They got to me and are very light gray, but not even a dirty white, so I need to make them lighter. They are perfect for my costume so I'd rather not have to make a cover or get different shoes if I can help it. Suggestions? You can airbrush it. Also, try sponging it on in thin layers instead of using a paintbrush.

This. Also with the airbrushing, you will need to thin it out to airbrush it on. Leather paint is fairly thick in consistency. It's not as thick as say, Jaquard's textile paint, but it's to thick to just put in the airbrush and have a go.

Also note, if you live in SoCal, there is a manufacture in LA county. You can walk into their warehouse and buy the paint there. They're sadly only open during the week until 4pm.

just letting you know that i'm not a super awesome sewer, and i make shit up as i go, but things generally tend to work out for me so here would be my game plan. my idea would be getting a pattern for bloomers and matching it up with a plain long sleeved blouse pattern (that zips in the back or on the side) and connecting them into a seamless pattern. add a little bit for movement at the waist and the connection between the shirt and shorts. draw the pattern onto cheap interfacing and test it out on cheap broadcloth before sewing your legit fabric. i'm not actually at home right now, and i won't be until friday evening, but i could show you the patterns /i/ would personally use for the top, especially with the seams towards the middle when i do. You can make the leggings out of a faux leather, vinyl, what have you for the sake of being authentic to the picture or make it out of a breathable material so you don't die wearing it. Dance tights. Hands down.

>>6589506
If you're okay with being basically blind: heat-n-bond.

If you're not okay with being basically blind: Cut out the shape from the hood, take a stretch fabric [like tights for example] of the same color and line up the shape to cut it out, and then sew that sucker back in. You'll be able to see and it won't look too bad if you sew it in properly.

>>6590045
Well, since the first craft foam trial for you didn't work... You can make the base out of cardboard paper and cover it up with fabric. Basically, you'd take the measurement for the pieces of cardboard and add about an inch for seam allowance, sew it all together and place it on top of the hat. E6000 shaped bows [use wire to keep the shape sturdy] to a red ball and then 36000 that sucker to the hat.

>>6590678
You might have to make it yourself anon. Most places will care that super satin/shiny ribbons or if they do carry something you like - it'll be expensive.

>>6590745
Have you tried just heat-n-bonding the right colored fabric to the sweater? It'd provide more crisp lines and even coloring.

>>6592365
Use a synthetic shampoo, wash it, let it dry completely. Most pre-curled wigs will return to their normal shape if they were made properly. If it doesn't, do a hot water curling session with it and it'll get back to normal.

So, last night I was inspired to do a turret cosplay. I found a really cute dress pattern and quickly drew up a little design on MS paint. I was just wondering if I could get a little bit of input on the design that would make this costume look really neat. I was thinking of putting in some lights to make the chest piece brighter. I think using a something like vinyl to make the dress or some type of fabric to get a cool looking shine. Would that be incredibly hard to work with?

>> No.6596231

>>6596156
I don't think vinyl would work very well for a circle cut skirt like that, it just wouldn't quite drape right. Maybe consider using something like a sports knit that has a sheen to it instead? Almost like a jersey fabric but with more body to it, I'm not really sure what the word is for it.

Then you can fully line it and maybe face the collar to make sure it has the right amount of stability with a flimsier fabric.

>> No.6596321

>>6596231
Yeah, I was just looking at google and thought the same thing when looking at examples. Do you think a pleather-type of fabric would work well? I'm thinking of creating a petti to help with the fullness, but I'm also afraid of the way the whole thing will end up draping. Jersey fabric seems like it would end up being rather flat. I'm not even sure if pleather+petti would look okay in the end.

>> No.6596333

>>6596321
I was thinking about that, and I think if the pleather is soft and pliable enough, it could work! Try to find a pleather that has that softer, more foam-like feel to it rather than the upholstery sort of backing, and if it easily drapes when you gather it with your hands I think it could work.

With the petti, I'd just be careful of
a) the jersey shelfing and lumping strangely over the petti, because it doesn't have a lot of body on its own- so you'll need a good lining, and
b) If you use pleather, it might sort of.. not drape and stick up straight out, if that makes sense? Like out radially in a circle. So you'd have to play with it to make sure it drapes downward properly without being limp and sad, in which case a petticoat would definitely help.

How do I make a veil like this? I was thinking a circle shape and using a tight zigzag stitch along the ends or maybe a rolled hem, but I'm not sure. Anyone have any suggestions?

>> No.6598913

>>6598893
Your idea sounds like it'll work, and I think it's better to go with the circle. To imagine an oval, the back will be too long, and edges may come up too high by your face. If anything, test the shape with some cheap fabric. It doesn't have to drape as nice, you just need to see the size and how it looks around the head and back.

I thought I would post this here on the off chance it might help someone.

Whenever I consider making a costume that may not be to my exact bodytype (I am short, a little plump and have huge boobs) I always make one of these to see if I like the way I look.

I take the character image and I make it a little wider, shorten the legs, shorten the length overall since I'm not a giraffe, add a bigger chest and basically pinch and pull until it resembles what the character and costume would look like at my size.

This really helps to give me a visual and idea of what the outcome will be. After crying over too many bad choices and cursing myself for not taking the leap on outfits that would have looked great, I find this really saves me a lot of time and despair in the end. Of course it's not 100% accurate but it really does put the costume into perspective.

A couple of my friends do the same thing now, even the super skinny ones- they stretch out the character and remove a lot of the curveage to see if they still like the look.

A stiff foam and either cover it in craft foam so you can paint it, or find a sealer to cover the whole thing. You'll be able to cut it with scissors or knives and shape it as needed, and it'll be easy to find the right thickness for may's anchor. plus it'll be hella light weight.

The only place I would avoid is the dealers room if its a very packed convention, just go on Sunday.

That kind of lace is alright, anon.

For future reference, just ask yourself 'is this lace hideous and ugly?'. If you find yourself saying 'yes', it's bad lace. Tadaah.

Even cheap lace can sometimes look really nice! I have some machine lace which I found in the 50p bin at the habidasher's which is clearly quite cheap, but it feels soft and nice quality and has a cool geometric pattern with no netting rather than BLOCKYFLOWERZ like all other cheap lace. So really, just go with your eyes and hands - if it looks nice and feels nice, it is probably nice.

Fyeahlolita has a really good guide to telling good lace from bad lace. 4chan keeps telling me the link is spam, so just type in fyeahlolita dot blogspot dot co dot uk, and then paste in /2010/04/how-to-tell-bad-lace-fromood-lace.html

Oh yeah - for the kind of lace you have in the picture, if you want the best possible quality, check the edges for mesh that bleeds far beyond the embroidered edge. A little bit of occasional bleed is alright, so don't worry about it, but if you want to be sure you're getting value for money, look for that.

Use gravity to your advantage and finish with tacky glue. There is no reason you can't shock it straight up, it just takes practice. Good luck.

I think a high ponytail would translate better to real life. Something like this, but with a small brown hair tie.

I should probably start a thread for this question, but too shy...
Anyone got any references to newer Hatsune Miku outfits that don't have enough love yet?

That's what I was planning on going with, but I don't wanna look lazy :T I just don't think that her hairstyle would translate well to real life, like at all...

I'm back for help.

What would be the best way to attach wonderflex with fabric? I've heard hot glue is good with small pieces, but what about larger pieces? Like the chest plate?

For my Sadako dress I just thirfted an old nightgown. It was perfect. Hope that helps.

Stupid simple question, but an issue I haven't run into untill now. I'm having to glue EVA foam to spandex. I tried e6000 but it didn't really want to hold, any other alternatives? I had one recomendation of Barge that I will try tonight. Will crazy glue or hot glue work?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Super 77 spray adhesive. Worked like a charm. But yes, hot glue also works.

Firstly i'l apologize for being new, this probably fairly obvious.

What Material would be good for the "Wings" along the back?
I've thought of stiff card or poster board, but worried about them being damaged in a busy con or even just travel.

foam was my other idea, but getting the perfect black finish could be rather difficult.

any suggestions?

>> No.6609184

>>6609177
For a good black finish, use plastidip. I use it to seal most of my foam stuff and it works like a charm.

Regardless of what you make it out of, people will most likely bump into them. I'd say just make it out of matte board and it shouldn't be a problem walking around as long as you don't make them extend out too much.

I'll probably end up doing that. I always thought her outfit was a nightgown but then I saw this from Sadako 3D's special photobook and thought it was a neat look.

I'm planning on cosplaying Raven from Teen Titans, but I've never done anything with a leotard before. Where can a find nice ones, and should I go with a more leathery looking one or just some kind of matte nylon/spandex?

I can't seem to get the scuffs off these Bodyline shoes. I would like to sell them but not in this condition. I've tried a magic eraser, Comet, window cleaner, eraser, and toothpaste and it doesn't seem to budge.

Thanks anons.

I've decided on making the wings out of 1m square foam, at a 45 degree angle to my body they'll only come out 50cm or so, so still fairly close.

Plastidip seems nice, but very expensive to get where i live, so I'm looking at just dyeing or glossing them.

Possibly go over with plastidip at a later date if it all works out nicely.

again, thanks all.

polite sage as i'm not asking/giving help

Do you anon's think it would be okay to cosplay as Ebisu (Dorohedoro) when I'm 5'5" and 33.5-26-25? I'd love to try Nikaido, but I think that would be even less realistic since I don't have the muscles or chest size.

Material help?!

Do you all think a medium weight linen would look nice for this skirt?
I was also thinking something like organza for the top, I want it to seem flowy and don't mind if it's see through because I can always wear a cami. Or do you think just cotton would be fine?

I will have to order my fabric online because my Joanns doesn't have any colors like these besides in cotton broadcloth or quilting cotton.
