Since there is talk in the thread that we would like conversation without drama being caused, how about we discuss our opinions on this:

How do you feel about changing/modifying things in a cosplay that are different from canon (to an extent) to make an outfit more original, or to better suit a person's body type? For example, different styles of red shoes for Terezi, different styles of skirts for girls who wear them, ways to style Jake's wig, etc? Do you prefer hyper accuracy or do you enjoy some leeway and/or creativity? When is it done incorrectly?

As well, what are some cute ideas for costumes that you'd like to see done more often, such as ways to style hair or ways to construct some outfits? Have you seen any little things like this you enjoyed? Share them!

Sorry if this seems broad for a topic or unnecessary, I was trying to think of something to spark discussion.

I'd say it's fine to tweak a design more so it flatters you.

For example, if pale wigs don't look best on you and you're cosplaying Rose, use a dirty blonde or dark blonde wig.

Or even using heels where flats are needed.

What I don't like is when people tweak it so much it looks like some OC outfit they just pulled out of their closet. Like I remember this one girl did a 3am Jade dress and it was literally just a black prom dress they got at the thrift store. No green bias tape sewed on, no Bec symbol, I'll try to find a picture for you later.

I think that a cosplay should always be tailored to look good on the cosplayer's body type. If that means changing some things about the character's outfit around, then it's fine by me. As for changing stuff from canon, as long as it looks good and makes sense, it's okay. I only consider it done incorrectly when it's a modification that makes no sense or just looks really bad. It's cool to see people mess around with designs, but sometimes it just gets ridiculous.

I'd like to see some of the alternate outfits from the comic that are rarely done, such as a lot of Kanaya's dresses, Vriska's fairy dress, John's teal suit, Jade's Dead Shuffle and Iron Lass dresses, etc.

That's just my opinion. I love the rest of her cosplay. It's the one of the best Tavros cosplays I've seen.

I think certain tweaks are fine, especially when it comes to shoes. Since you mentioned Terezi, I'll go with her. It can be fucking expensive to buy a separate pair of shoes each time you do a cosplay just to tailor it to canon for that character. The all red shoes look great, sure, but I think red cons or keds are just as acceptable.

Yes I hope if she's reading this in hsg somehow she's encouraged to go a bit more with this dress! I think she has a lot of potential, and that by adding a bit more effort she can pull this look off rather well. As well I'd probably hand her some Hollywood tape to help keep that dress up.

I'm tempted to say there's more she could do with the wig, but to be honest I really don't know what can be done to a Jade wig.

How would you guys go about making the lollypop juju? I haven't made a big prop before and I found some wooden dowels for the stick that seem pretty strong but I don't know what to make the actual lollypop out that's lightweight and durable?

Styrofoam maybe?

Get some construction styrofoam, usually pink or blue, from a hardware store. Cut out a big circle, sand and bevel the edges instead of leaving it as this big weird circle thing, so it's gradually sloping from the edge towards the center up to a certain point you decide. Just make sure its nice and gradual.

Drill a small hole into the bottom of the styrofoam nice circle so that way you can attach the lollypop. You can't use superglue and shit on styrofoam so get a good glue that works for it.

You NEED to coat the styrofoam circle with SOMETHING but that's kind of your choice I guess? You could do Paperclay or something, you could do plaster strips if you're careful!

You can buy styrofoam circles from places like WallMart or Michaels that is in a proportionate size for the Juju.
But sand down the edges so they're not right angles, glue your stick in the circle using gorilla glue (it expands and ensures a secure hold), then coat in in a couple layers of either paperclay or spackle (sand between layers to save yourself some time at the end)

i really love seeing people modify designs to suit themselves better. homestuck is drawn in such a simplistic way most of the time that it seems logical to change things within reason. i mean, obviously it'd make no sense if you decided to cosplay karkat with a tutu on his head, but doing things like changing skirt lengths, altering garment proportions and fit, styling a wig a certain way or getting a certain colour, etc- i think those things are all fine. a lot of the time they're what makes a costume memorable (an example that immediately comes to mind is that excellent latula in the leather-like pants).

No, it's just a primer that helps with the painting.

If you're having trouble filling in holes on the styrofoam, I'd suggest using a spray spackle before say, plaster, as it'll fill in the holes in foam and make the surface harder and easier to build off.
It's messy as shit though, so be sure to do it in a covered area.

I think the biggest factor in creativity is really whether or not it works in the end.
The Fancy-Whatevers are a good example of that. Half the time, the people doing them don't have high enough craftsmanship to make the costumes OR the design is completely hideous or doesn't translate well to real life in the slightest to begin with. It's like, sure, you were creative, but does it really fucking matter if the end product looks like ass?

Otherwise, original ideas are just fine imo. The better the costume functions in the end while still resembling the source material, the more impressed I would be. Especially if the modifications are just to help the costume look more flattering on the cosplayer. Not everyone can pull off everything, so better to help yourself than just look like a weird frumpy mess for the sake of 'accuracy'.

The color in her dreamer outfit seems to be the same in her sprite as it is outside of her sprites. It varies a tiny bit, but it's barely even noticeable. I'd say to just buy new fabric in the right color. The color is less of a fuchsia and more of a light purple. At least, that's how it looks for me.

On an unrelated note, does anyone know where I could find fabric that's the right color for Terezi's god tier tunic? I looked at Joanne's and they only had flannel with the right color.

I'm planning on Trickster Jane and MS Paint in the somewhat forseeable future. Just need to save my money for something else at the moment.

I'm having trouble thinking of any other cosplays, though. I've been more or less typecasted as Jane and while I love her to death I'd like to try something more difficult than her and Ms. Paint sometime. What are good cosplays girls other than these two? Especially for those with a Cello shaped body type, as pictured on the side here. I have a very round face as well so thats another issue to tackle.

It's too dark, as well. The fabric I'm making the hood out of is almost the exact shade as the one you linked me for the shirt. I did find a lighter fabric in the right color on that website, though.

I think of the four I'll try Aradia and Aranea. Mindfang was a possibility I was thinking of, so Aranea goes a little hand-in-hand with that. As for Aradia, her horns would be a nice challenge to try.

What would the response to a troll cosplay be if I didn't paint my skin grey and just shopped it grey?

inb4 laziness. I tried painting my skin before and my skin literally blistered from an allergic reaction and I was in pain for weeks afterwards. I think I'd look really good as Vriska, I just don't want to be Vriska with a severe skin problem brought on by allergic reaction. My skin is very nice normally and I tolerate regular makeup well. I don't have sensitive skin, i just blister at body paint for no reason and I'd rather not relive the experience.

There are very many different body paints. I'd suggest looking for one that would suit your skins needs. I'm starting on two costumes, so tips on both.
Best way to do the applique work on Mindfangs' coat? Is the spiderweb printed skirt underneath considered cannon at this point because I've seen multiple versions.

Female Equius (only feminizing because I realized years ago my body does not work convincingly at ALL for crossplay). Full tights or long socks;if socks, thigh or just over the knee? I'm thinking a sleeveless tee with wider straps rather than the cannon beater. I am lifting as well because I want to do this right.

which is a product I will never ever suggest anyone use despite it's popularity and I'm surprised more people haven't had that sort of reaction to it before because I have never had an allergic reaction to makeup in my life except to that make up and I know people who have serious skin problems that wear it just fine. I literally won't touch the stuff again. I even tried asking for a refund from the company and they refused saying that I should have known better than use their product. I may just have gotten a bad batch or something but I legitimately have problems trusting any body paint company to the point where I'd rather just make my own with proper pigments and oils instead of whatever godawful shit they stick in their products.

As long as you shop it well, it's fine. Make sure to avoid making your skin completely greyscale, because it looks unnatural and weird. I usually just make a layer over my photo, paint in the skin areas white, and set the layer to 'hue' with a 80% opacity. It makes it your skin look grey, but natural.

The top image in pic related is completely greyscale, while the bottom is my method. See how the bottom looks more natural, and more like it's body paint and not shoop?

If 80% opacity looks too skin colored, just set it a few degrees higher.

I actually recommend going back to Jo Ann and getting their Sew Classic Jet Set knit in white, and using iPoly dye to get it to the right color. Jet Set is 100% polyester and so it should take the dye well (and is also currently on sale for 40% off).

It's not the worse Porrim dress, but it certainly ain't that great.
The Aranea dress is better in comparison.
It seems when people cosplay Porrim, they don't know how the dress would be properly constructed when it translates to real life.

Much like fancy dreamers, they shoot too far, without any idea how modern fashion would look.

MF isn't the best example, but she did manage to get the basic idea of how the dress would translate. Although that other Porrim cosplayer from a few threads back looked better, but I can't find it.

It looks applied well because it's a zentai/morphsuit or whatever, hence the seams on the hands and the difference in hue/saturation between the body and face. At least they were smart enough to have the boa covering the neckline of the bodysuit.

It's the flashes. I know elemental likes to use at least two (if not three) flashes in a given photo. My guess is that there was one dropped on both the left and right side of the frame, hence the appearance that Davesprite has a horned shadow (which I think is pretty cool, if a bit random).

Jade's proportions are off, and they make her look like she has an elongated torso. She should hem the shirt so it hits at the top of her hips, and maybe shorten the skirt.

The Jane posted a completed picture a while ago on Tumblr, and the wig she used here is so much better than the prior makeshift one. I still love her dress (my favourite execution so far), but the tattoos, makeup, and messy tights really detract from a cosplay with potential, and I wish she'd used the right glasses.

I like all the hair foods as far as I can tell.

II is basically like a version of I that isn't quite so much of a pain to remove. No-tack is less sticky but a little thinner so it's probably a question of how much help you're going to have painting (your skin will definitely stick to itself if you bend wrong while using II) vs how many layers you want to put on.

No, what you want is isopropyl myristate; different stuff.

Depending on what kind of Pros-Aide you used for your PAX, you might be able to get it off without using any other products. I can get Pros-Aide II to come off with a hot shower/bath, soap, and something to exfoliate with (loofa, cheap scrubby gloves/towels); there were a few bits I was having trouble with, so I tried a neutrogena makeup wipe (I use those to remove Ben Nye as well) and it took off the remaining bits. I've been able to take PAX made with No-Tack Pros-Aide this way as well, but it takes more scrubbing.

For the isopropyl myristate, how you apply it matters. Use a cotton ball or makeup sponge to apply a thin layer of it on top of the PAX, let dry while it breaks down the adhesives, then load another cotton ball/makeup sponge with it and it should come off with some rubbing. A little more time consuming than shower-scrub, but it works more readily and is more gentle on your skin.

Someone had asked about it making skin look plastic-ey, and the general response was that it does acquire a bit of a sheen as excess powder wears off (there should be excess as you want to powder the stuff to high heaven).

Pros-Aide II was the one I used for that application, and is what I own a bottle of (the no-tack I've use belongs to a friend). I like it because it's easy to remove, but I think you might have to be a little more careful about getting things on it than other types. If you're gripping props constantly or grasping things with condensation on them (cold drinks, etc), I imagine you'll get a bit more wear on the PAX due to the ease of removal with fluid and friction this variety is favored for.

One other thing to mention; my friends have theorized that using hand lotion or similar products prior to application (or even several hours in advance) may make PAX more prone to peeling at the palms.
