Reposting on here BECAUSE

Does anybody have any good sites for belt buckles, metal rings, and other of those kind of notions that I could check? Tandy Leather and Zack White Leather have turned up nothing for these particular items. (they have 2-prong buckles, but all too big)
If it comes to it, I can make my own rectangle and step-up things, but...

Also, whoever linked me Zack White in the last thread THANK YOU. All the shit I was going to get from Tandy is so much cheaper on here!

Reposting as well. Still need help.

I want to cosplay as Kumagawa from Medaka Box and I need some help.

I need a good wig. A friend of mine suggested this store: http://stores.ebay.com/COSPLAY-WIG/BLACK-/_i.html?_fsub=10103012&_sid=211130012&_trksid=p4634.c0.m322 I read the pastebin but I wanted to get some opinions on what I should do about getting the correct wig for this.

I could also use some suggestions on making the screws.

Thanks.

Alright, I need some serious help with this: I have done so much searching and have yet to find what I'm looking for.

I need a PLAIN, Black Wizards robe like in pic related. You know, like Harry Potter, with four crucial parts: a hood, length down, length in arms, and a part down the middle. I would get the one in pic related, if it didn't have that damn red in it, I need plain black.

I have searched for this under the terms of wizard robe, choir robe, robe, cloak, trench, etc. Just everything.

tl;dr : I need a plain black wizard robe like in Harry potter but with no patch or other color.

Also I'm 6ft1

Need serious help bros

You couldn't make one? Simplicity has an easy pattern for robes. They're honestly one of the easiest/most forgiving thing to sew because if you mess up there's so much fabric to hide it and it's hard to make it too small/big with all that room.

I've never made a custom print from Spoonflower.com before, but I was debating on getting either their organic cotton sateen ($27/yd) or their heavy cotton twill ($32/yd) for Bert's jacket, pic related. Is this site worth it for their custom prints? Or are there similar sites where I could get decent cottons for cheaper?

I'm surprised that you remember who I am, haha! I feel kind of bad for asking so many times that people recognise me, but my several attempts at her arms have made me start to regret choosing to cosplay Nirvana haha....

I'm afraid I don't quite understand what you're saying, ahahah; I was thinking of a pulling mechanism similar to those toys you can get where you pull the handle and there's a string that maneuvers a toy animal's mouth (if that makes sense? I don't know what they're called...)

Then once I've got the mechanism sorted out, there's the matter of 'what kind of materials would allow good movement for it'.... although hopefully a nice tight-fitting fabric should do the job okay.

I'm having a really hard time finding a Serah wig and I found these two which I don't think are too bad, but I was wondering what you guys think and which is better, or if I should just go find a completely different one. The one on the left is a Lightning wig but I really liked the color for it and would just mod it for Serah. I'd go with the one on the right. A friend and I own it and it is a good length and a pretty color in real life (has brown tones to it and looks natural plus a line skintop). The Lightning one may end up being too short to put up into Serah's side ponytail.

Check second hand sales or post a WTB on coscom or a fb cosplay group or something for red shoes in your size, other than that check ebay.

The red ruffle thing is easy as shit okay. You take a red cloth, maybe cloth napkin as that's already hemmed, and then straight stitch (up down up down up down) on one end. When you get to the end, pull the fabric along the thread to gather it and tie it off. Glue tie across the top , hide edges underneath with hotglue and safety pin. If not just go to your local fabric store or whatever and I bet someone with sewing experience will make it for you for 10 dollars.

Cover all with paper mache, 3-4 layers of mod podge (or elmers glue and water), paint. If the eyes require lenses buy some clear folders in the color/tint that you like and cut them up.

Soon to be overdone, I know, but my idea for the hoodie was to purchase a plain light heather gray, soak it, and then let the sleeves and hood sit in a tub of weak light blue dye. After that, I figured I could lay the hoodie flat in a tub with dye and keep the sleeves and hood taped/pinned/hooked above the dye for a few hours so the fade to the blue portions would be minimal.

Hey, need some advice here.
I'm attempting to build the prop on this girls back here, and I have no idea how to start it. I've gone from floral foam, to chicken wire, and back.
I have an idea of how I'll attach it to myself, just having trouble on what to make it out of. Obviously I don't want it to weight a ton on my back/shoulders, so I'm trying to find the lightest material that I can that won't cost a fortune.

whichever wig you choose, you'll need to do a fair bit of styling since there is no such thing as a perfectly styled wig for such and such character. if you buy the second bob wig, i'd layer some of the fibers a bit to get your character's layered look then flip out and freeze spray it so that the flips stay. if you get the third already layered wig, you would probably only need to trim and spike certain areas in order to get his specific hairstyle. as for the screw prop, follow kamui's expanding foam tutorial: http://www.kamuicosplay.com/p/tutorials.html
it's simple, easy, and lightweight.

>>6553985
for the cotton sateen, the fabric itself will have a nice elegant shine to it but not ugly photo/too bright for my eyes shine and it's also lightweight and breathable. cotton twill is usually the go-to fabric for uniform wear and wouldn't look too bad for bert's jacket and although breathable depending on the weather using a heavyweight twill might not be a good idea. i don't know any other site that'll custom print your fabric for you and although spoonflower is pricy, i've heard that it's worth it. as for me i'd go with the sateen. it's $5 cheaper and photographs nicer in my opinion.

Looking to do this fine fellow here from Wild Arms sometime soon.

I would recommend one of those permanent fabric marker pens, actually.

If you want fabric paint, Dylon makes a pretty decent one that promises to stay soft after being set.
http://www.dylon.co.uk/product.php?alias=fabric-paints&oducts=product-info&alias-product=fabric-paints
I've used it to paint socks, but the trouble is that the paint alternately didn't want to be absorbed into the fabric, or else it spread into areas it's not supposed to, and will seep under tape.
Another note is to paint it with the shirt over a mannequin, pad the neck and waist areas out to stretch the fabric fully. That way the fabric paint dries on fully stretched out (I can vouch this works for the Dylon fabric paint above, but any other brand, you'll have to test it yourself to see if it cracks)

have you already made the top? if you want to go by ribbon/bias/some sort of trim you'll have to stretch the top out as far as it will go while sewing said stripe on. that way when you go to wear it, there will be ample room for the stripe to "stretch" with the top itself. but i'd go with what the other anon said. i think using fabric paint would look much better. also fabric paint doesn't crack and chip... what you're thinking of is literal acrylic paint which is definitely not what you want to use for a form fitting knit top. the only thing is that i think you'll need to apply the same technique of stretch and paint as you go in order to get the fabric top completely covered. the fabric paint at joann's is pretty reliable: tulip? i think

My experience with both is that they both completely suck with black fabric. With markers, I haven't come across anything that's opaque on black fabric. With Dylon, you can goop it on in layers, but then it cracks very easily since the layer is so thick.

I'd recommend you buy another light-coloured fabric, paint that, and applique it onto the black fabric if you need it that badly.

Also forgot to add, dilute Dylon paint with some water, it goes on easier and thinner, which cracks less.

What stitch/method should I use so that the applique stitching doesn't negate/immobilize the elasticity of the fabric?

>> No.6558766

>>6558697

For stretch fabric, the recommended machine stitch is zigzag. Stretch the fabric and keep it stretched while you're sewing. If you have the type where the zigzag stitch is done three times rather than the single zigzag, use that as it's stronger. I recommend you test sew and then get a second opinion, as the zigzag stitch will be visible and you might not like the effect.

For handsewing, fold under the edges of the applique, then handsew straight stitch with clear elastic crystal beading thread. Use a blunt (tapestry) needle and try to insert the beading thread in between the weave of the fabric. Take small stitches, and be careful when washing it.

Both are assuming you use stretch fabric for both applique and base, and neither fabric frays.

Usually if you're doing something like an applique on the body of the shirt, you can ignore the elasticity. It's usually the neckhole that you can't mess the elasticity with.

You don't even need to spend that much. I spent $300 on a bernette (which is from the berninia brand but the more cost-effective model) and I love it to pieces. It's super heavy because of the metal parts, but because of that I just can tell it'll last me forever so long as I take good care of it. It only has basic stitches, but unless you're planning on doing fancy stitch work/ embroidery, you don't need anything more than straight, zigzag and the butthole stitch.

>>6560018
I've made a labcoat before, and just used a heavy cotton. Worked pretty well since I needed it to be stiff but not super stiff like burlap. Just so long as you line it, even a thin material will work. For the sweater vest, I'd look for some sort of knit. Sorry, I'm a little useless there, I've only used jersey knit, which more or less feels like a t-shirt.

All right /cgl/, I want to seriously start planning my bigger cosplay for the year, pic related. It's a Druddigon gijinka from the Gen V Pokemon games, in case anybody was unaware/curious.

I have a few questions, and I'll try to keep them as brief as I can manage. Admittedly this is my first time tackling a cosplay with armor, but I'm going to be stubborn and insist I at least make an attempt to finish this.

Firstly: Worbla or Wonderflex? I've seen both floating around, and since I've never handled either, I'm not sure which would be best for this, or if one is better for certain parts over the other.

Second: I want to have the long arms like pic related, but I'm getting cold feet about having scale mail like I drew in. Do any of you think scale mail would clash too bad, and if so, what might work better? If not, any tips on attaching the arms to the rest of the outfit?

Third: The helmet. Is it better to make one from scratch or start with a base? I was thinking starting with a hard hat and building upon it, but I might also be lazy.

Sorry if that was long winded at all, I just wanna make sure I do this as well as I can.

Hey /cgl/. I'm working on a book inspired cosplay of Pitch. I'd like to use the vinyl in the picture for parts of it if I can, so I could cut out some of the fabric in the shapes of fearlings and attach them to the costume in a few areas. My question is, if I do use vinyl, is there a way to sew those shapes on top of vinyl, or anther fabric, in a way that won't look like crap? If not, is there a matte paint that's made for vinyl that I could use to paint those shapes?

Seagulls, I need some sewing machine help.
I have a Brother SE 400, and it gives me alerts when something's wrong (bobbin is running out, the upper thread came undone, etc)
Now while I was finishing up something tonight, my machine went into safety mode (as it tuns out, I wasn't paying attention when setting up the upper thread and skipped one of the "steps" ) and I ended up having to cut the upper thread.

Now it keeps telling me check to see if the upper thread is in place, even though it is, and it's sewing just fine. It just gives me an alert saying check the upper thread, and stops my sewing every 5 seconds, which is very annoying.

I tried everything I could think of, changing the thread, setting up the upper thread again, taking out the bobbin and checking it, taking out the needle to see if maybe something was wrong with it, but it's still beeping at me, giving me the alert, and stopping my sewing.

What do I do here?

So I'm going to be cosplaying Toramaru Shou, and I need a Jeweled Pagoda, image related. I want to make the globe semi-opaque and put some pulsing LEDs inside for a neat effect...problem is, I don't know what to use for the globe itself.

It's a few inches in diameter, so my initial thoughts were either gutted round lightbulbs or large frosted Christmas ornaments, but those are breakable and incredibly breakable, respectively. Something plastic would be nice, but I'm not sure where I could scavenge an appropriate plastic/etc globe from. Ideas?

I'm not too worried about the rest, but I'd also listen to any ideas on how to make the roof look like...well, a roof, in miniature. Planning on using squared-off dowels or some such glued to a base to make the rest of the upper section.

You can use ground up chalk pastels, eyeshadow, acrylic paint etc. as pigment. The key is not to use too much otherwise the resin won't harder properly. Here's a nice website with tutorials: http://skinnerstudio.blogspot.ca/2010/0color-color-color-alternative-ways-to.ml

One thing I would watch out for is that on jacket patterns the armhole tends to be a lot bigger and the P3 uniforms are very fitted you'll want to make it more like a regular shirt sleeve armhole or it will look funky on Hamako/Minako since her shirt is so short.

Yes try to make smallish stitches, but also try to press your seams open when you're done like this. It will make it so you can set how the fabric pulls and will look cleaner especially since handstitching will tend ot get you an uneven seam.

Bumping this because I cannot into body paint, hokay:

So I'm practicing with PAX paint, and it goes on my arm and chest areas fine. However I read somewhere that you can put PAX on your face too. I tried doing that and it just looks awful. Even the slightest facial expression ruins the entire thing, and it makes you look like you have old hag wrinkles. If I'm doing something wrong let me know, but if not then I feel my only other option is Ben Nye aquacolor, and I just pray that I can get the pros-aide shade to match up with the stupid Ben Nye. I was just hoping I could stretch the PAX to use on my face so I wouldn't have to spend more money.

I just feel like I'm doing something wrong. If I apply a light layer it seems to be fine, but then the coverage is blotchy and my natural skin shows. The more layers I apply it seems the more wrinkle-prone it gets. The color needs to be opaque.

They look small enough that you could make them from model magic and use a fine grit sand paper, fold it in half and carve the ridges in to the model magic once it's dry. You could use combs fastened to the horns and slide them in to your wig and decorate your hair around it to hide them.

Pic related. A pair I did that are kind of the same but was for an Aries from Fairy Tail. I used combs and they held in the wig really well, especially with their placement on the head. The weight's supported but if you want extra assurance, if you drill a small hole near the top of it, you can thread and sew it to the wig for extra hold, which is what the customer asked of the ones in the image.

Don't listen to this tard, anon.

Satin is often used for capes and cape lining as it has a beautiful drape. As long as you are not buying the cheap shit and go with a midde-weight low lustre option it will look beautiful.

Rule of thumb is don't use the same texture twice. Matte exterior, shiny lining. Not shiny exterior, shiny lining. I would suggest velvet as the outer layer, and the satin for the interior so you'll get slices of luxe fabric and the shine won't be overwhelming.

I'm inclined to believe this. The velvet seems simple enough, but do you recommend I use the lustrous side of the satin or the duller underside? Also, what do you think about sateen?

if its from fabric.com the $6 satin is going to be pretty crappy. I know this from personal experience. For a little more, you can get a really nice duchess satin from voguefabricsstore.com which really will be low luster. If you end up going with the satin in the picture, then I would say go with the duller underside.

Hi /cgl/, I've never worked with props before but I was thinking of making wings for my Godoka costume. I've tried to look for wing tutorials but they all seem to be either bat wings or feathery angel wings.

Anybody have a link to a tutorial that would be helpful or maybe tell me what material would be best? Her wings look transparent in some pictures as well as in the anime and I'm not sure if it'd be a good idea to try to get that effect in real life or not.

As for fake blood splatter, I've been considering doing the cosplay myself, what I sort of had in mind was just finding something absorbent like a large-ish sponge, soaking it in the fake blood, and actually smacking the shit out of it with a bat or whatever. I figure it'd be pretty realistic splatter if it was actually splatter.

I would not order from SyFabrics if I were you. They have terrible customer service, and the last time I ordered vinyl from them, it arrived balled up in a small box and was actually melted to itself, and it took weeks for them to admit fault and refund me. And they only refunded the cost of the fabric and not any of the shipping, as it was not their policy.

Pic related: the fabric they sent that had melted to itself.

So I've got some goldish bias tape and some goldish cord that both go on the same cosplay, but despite being the best match I could find they aren't really that close in color. The problem is that the cord is for frogs and they'll be laying right over top of the bias tape'd edge of a vest, which will make the difference extremely noticable.

Can you generally dye cord? It's lighter than the bias tape, so I'm guessing it would be easier to dye darker than to try and lighten the tape (if you can even dye bias tape). I'm not sure what it's made of, since I just bought it by length.

Would I just be better off just trying to find some other cord/bias tape than going to the trouble of dying something? I've never really done it, and I'm not in a time crunch.

You can try spraying it with some detangler spray made for synthetic hair. Let it soak for a bit, wash it out completely, and then place the wig on a wig head to dry. Let it dry 100% percent and then brush through it from the bottom up section by section. If that doesn't work, that means the fibers may have been melted together somehow.
