Re: Homestuck at Arisia

Yeah, I think the two panelists couldn't get proper support from the con for a panel but got told at the last minute or something? Arisia isn't the tightest run ship in the world so it wouldn't surprise me, god knows some other panels I attended were obviously last minute productions.

I really enjoyed the panel, though I didn't contribute much. We talked about HS in a more abstract way, like what makes it unique in the history of comics and how the fandom is going to affect the nerd world in the future. Thighhighs ran it with the dude who ran all the comics programming and honestly I thought they did a great job--they steered the conversation well without ever getting primadonnaish and it was clear talking to them afterward that they'd put thought into it (and knew a shitton about comics). It was just a really good time. Shame a panel like that would be next to impossible to pull off anywhere else.

Also, Meenah who was there--if you're reading this, you looked fucking great. I loved your boots.

Alright CGL I have a question for you that I think could start a good thread for actual cosplay pictures going. Everyone was talking about how they either liked or didn't like that panel cast posted so I got to thinking i'd like to hear more.

So the prompt/question: If you could pick your DREAM CAST for a panel, who would it be made up of? Pretend everyone you want can come to the con. If you can't think of a whole cast, just who would you like to see in a panel period.

For contribution let's make it so you post a picture of at least one of the people in your dream cast. That way you contribute and the thread doesn't turn into 3/4 text again.

Personally I would love to see silencedrowns in a panel but I'm not sure if she even does them.

alright HSG, i feel like you guys could help me with this. a few of my younger friends (think like freshman-age) asked me to be their jade for beta kids group. i'm totally cool with that, it's just their first time homestucking and i really wanna make sure they don't royally mess it up. they don't really know how to put on cosplay makeup or style wigs, so i'll be helping a lot with that. we're doing the starter/default outfits (white skirts/pants though, unlike the picture) the dave is a girl, if that helps with anymore advice-giving

Since the outfits are so simple, you'd have to make eveything clean and precise looking. Sharp shirt designs, and well styled wigs are important. Have the clothes fit them well, and get boys pants foe the Dave and John.
Err, for makeup just don't go too overboard? Since the Dave is a girl, just some simple contouring so they don't look as feminine.
I'd give more advice but I'm on mobile now so it's a pain to type this out ahhaa.

But yes, honestly I think she makes a pretty darn good Capricorn Troll (I can't speak past photographs though, since we're on different coasts). I'd cast her as Kurloz indeed.

As for the rest thats kind of hard for me to say personally, I'm the sort of person who likes seeing people do different varieties of things so I can't really choose one cosplay over another unless it comes down to bad construction. Plus they'd also have to have good stage presence, which I don't know enough cosplayers and haven't attended enough panels to make an accurate judgement.

Working on a SS cosplay, first time dealing with morphsuits.. I applied these eyes with fabric glue and while it worked perfectly, the glue seeped a bit into the fabric and makes it look like there's some residue in some places. is there any way to cover this up? It's not TOO bad, but it also isn't good.

You can place the glue spot on top of a paper towel or piece of cloth and run an iron over the garment until the glue melts. The towel/cloth will absorb some of the melted glue; you'll just need to repeat the process until all the glue is gone (remember to move the glue spot over a clean part of the towel/cloth each time).

If the glue is acetone based, you can use nailpolish remover on it, using a q-tip to clean up the edges.

With the super glue, your friend acetone comes in again! Use nailpolish, not straight acetone since that could ruin a fabric more than regular nailpolish.


Use acetone and an old toothbrush, reapplying the acetone a number of times and brushing to remove it layer-by-layer. Since it's a very small area, you could probably still use just a q-tip, but I only say a tooth brush because it can scrub it off. You could also use an emery board, if that won't snag the fabric.

I would say that's kinda gross, but I eat my lip peelings so I'm not one to talk.

Armsocks sound like what you want to do; there's a few tutorials floating around but they're you're best bet if you can't use paint.

If the skin peeling/eating is an anxiety-related thing and you'd like to remove the armsocks more easily, you can turn them into really long gloves instead if you find a way to pin them to an undershirt, or if you make garters for them with bands of a robust elastic.

Unfortunately, I can only tell you what /not/ to buy as far as jade goes.
I would highly avoid Stargazer, Graftobian, and MyBeautyAddiction (etsy) as even with careful application, lip primer, and sealer, multiple layers either result in very translucent color or very poor staying power.

I also just remembered about Morgana's (http://morganascrypt.com), but I haven't yet ordered from them as when I was rec'd them they were on holiday.

As someone who was Rose's age in the nineties I remember a lot of my babygoth friends wore big chunky boots. Not the heeled stripper variety, think more like Doc Martins on 3 extra inches of foam. I kinda doodled up a real shitty picture of what to do sorry its big and dumb. This is what I did for my prop and it worked out well for me. I don't think you'd have to necessarily drill a bit into the actual spork part, if you attach the Z block to the blue beveled piece but if you don't I don't think there'd be enough there to keep it staying in.

As I wrote, mine was semi-collapsable since I was moving it back and forth from home to college, so I did an effective but notably temp method of gluing it in.

It's annoying because there's always barstuck meet-ups as a potential way to enforce age restrictions, but then I have to worry about hauling my tipsy ass home at night.

For the most part, I'm cool with befriending teens, but the immaturity levels of some people are just ridiculous. Of course, turning 18 or 21 doesn't automatically make you a more tolerable person, but it does cut out a good number of the idiots.

I feel as if more structured meet-ups would possibly be a better idea in general, rather than the "wander around park/mall" stuff I see. Having everyone go bowling or do karaoke, or even go out to a cheap diner or coffee shop would preoccupy people's time so that insanity doesn't emerge from boredom. But the downside would probably be organizing things, as poorly planned things never end well. And regardless of the venue, some would probably fail to comprehend acting like civilized people and fuck everything up for the entire group.

A lot of people -- especially the younger folks relying on allowances -- will bitch and moan about activities that cost money, even if it's something relatively cheap like bowling (shoe rental etc) and karaoke (drinks/snacks/room rental). In my experience with cosplay & lolita groups, going to the mall/wandering around meetups are the only "sure thing" to plan because they don't cost anything by default.

On the flipside, hanging out with the 21+ crowd usually guarantees the people going have an income, so while people will always bitch about spending money it's usually possible to do a wider range of activities with the older folks.

I don't want to shade teens too much because there are definitely good'uns out there but I definitely wish there were more grown-up meets.
