Bubbletea-chan, who submitted a collage as a Pastel-goth was suppose to send another picture with a better head shot of her finished look. Never did and stopped all communication. I also get another entry of a girl trying to pass herself off as some Japanese model. So, I source out the photos. I was digging around the tumblr I found the pictures at and got past a few months in the archive to find "Bubbletea-chan" in there and the photos she took.

This girl, who did submit a photo that was approved as "Bubbletea-chan" was trying to pass off as another girl and I suspect as the model as well to double her chances at winning.

So much why??!?!?

Haha, you just brought back some good memories. I remember zipper-mag. Very cool people who run it.

These are the styles that are permitted: Gyaru, Lolita, Otome, Mori, Cult-party, Gothic, Fairykei.

So, you can do any style that falls under those categories. For example: Gothic has visual-kei, aristocrat style, Pastel Goth etc. The same goes for Lolita (Sweet Lolita, Gothic Lolita, Classic Lolita, Hime Lolita etc).

That is more street fashion (streetsnap), which, I have a hard time trying to place it under one of the categorizes listed. Perhaps Pastel Goth? Nu Goth isn't very J-fashion.

Beauty competitions make me sad. I don't like supporting them because it reinforces that a woman's natural beauty isn't popular or as highly praised as the "bigger better version" of herself.

When women get old, they're cast aside from younger and prettier versions. Why celebrate the height of a woman's physical beauty? Why not praise and admire all stages of her life?

"The flower dilemma" as I call it. Nobody wants wilted roses.

Competition is in our nature. I think its perfectly fine when the atmosphere is light and not aggressive. I think so too! I love that she updated that gunne sax sundress for the winter by adding that blouse with the jabot and the velvet jacket. And her makeup really pulls the look together. The blush accentuates her high cheek bones well. I just wish I could see her headpiece more up close. All around this is pretty much perfect. I think I'm going to be saving some entries as inspiration for my own outfits.

Sorry I'm blabbering on now, but it's just so rare to see someone attempt true dolly kei, instead of just throwing some tassels on a classic Lolita dress.

Yes, that is me in the wig and white hat. The circle lenses are EOS Ice Greens, I ordered them through PinkyParadise. I'm wearing G&G Natural Browns in my dolly-kei entry. Both sets are 14.5mm, I believe.

I'm having a hard time figuring out what's accepted as pastel goth and what's accepted as visual kei.

like I know pastel goth has a lot of light colors put in, but sometimes I see pictures of girls wearing all black or dark colors and it looks more visual than pastel to me, only difference is that their hair is a lighter color (and sometimes it's not, it's some dark gray or dark purple).

so I guess my question is, what do you guys consider pastel goth? all I can picture is basically listen flavor stuff.

Here is my advice for you:
Your eye make up would be better if you made it thicker towards the outer corners. At the moment, your eyes look a little bit droopy, but if you 'lift' the corners by thickening your eyeliner or even doing a slight flick it would look a lot better.

Wear some blush! If you're already wearing blush, a little heavier wouldn't hurt. When you're doing pictures, remember it will look more washed out than looking at yourself in the mirror, so put it heavier.

It wouldn't hurt to have a darker lip colour. Not dark, but a couple of shades darker than you have now. Rosey lips with a bit of gloss.

That's about it really. I like that you matched your eyebrows to your wig, and your eyelashes are really nice. Ignore the anon saying you have a gross nose or you're ugly because I think you're very pretty.

First of all, please ignore the petty attempts at trying to troll you. I do agree that the middle picture, doesn't seem to fit in with the flow of the rest of the pictures. If you have a headpiece, that would greatly balance out the coord.

The tips about winging the liner is great. A "touch" more blush and you could do a lip-stain with lip-gloss over it or a more pigmented lip-gloss.

>>6561905
I've posted a pic of what Visual-kei looks like. The makeup used for this style of clothing is always a paled out face, with black or deep blue lipstick or completely paled out lips. Heavy on the black eyeliner & deep colored eyeshadow. With very "spock" like eyebrows. Black nail polish as well. Now the hair can really be any color for this look they usually like to partially cover one eye with fringe bangs.

Pastel Goth, can have punk elements to it sometimes. Hair can range from pastel of course, to black or brown hair that has that ombre effect. You see a lot of bats, skeletons, inverted crosses, deco stud accessories and eyeballs. You can simply Google: Pastel Goth images for inspiration.

I am actually reading Lolita. I'm reading it for school, I thought it would be clever to pose with it.

Lolita has nothing to do with the fetish, except for the name. The Japanese who started the fashion used the name from Vladimir Nabakov's book.

It's a good book anyway. :3

Ah. It's a fantastic book.Really fucks with your head, though, because you start *rooting* for Humbert Humbert and then realize that his love interest is a *pre pubscent girl*.

Also love how he rips on Joyce in the prose.

So, okay, /cgl/, help me understand lolita fashion. I don't ask this condescendingly. And, don't get me wrong, I'm cool with the idea of dressing up and looking like a princess or doll or whatever.

My question is: how often do people who use the fashion dress up? What is the primary motivation behind this fashion... is it associated with a culture (e.g. punk fashion, etc)? How do people treat you if you are dressed up in lolita? Is there a male equivalent to lolita? Do you find it hard to go out looking like this? I imagine the contrast between your highly intricate outfits and the typical guy's slacks+button up+blazer look don't exactly... meld.

A lot of these questions you learn by lurking for a while, because they get asked often, but I'll humor you and answer.

>how often do people who use the fashion dress up?
It varies extensively - for some, it's a con/meetup only deal. Others wear it every single day. It's whatever you feel like you want to do.
>What is the primary motivation behind this fashion... is it associated with a culture (e.g. punk fashion, etc)?
Again, it varies from person to person. Most just think it looks pretty, though.
>How do people treat you if you are dressed up in lolita?
We have threads asking this ALL the time, and again, TONS of variation. For me, about 49% positive, 50% neutral/curious, 1% negative.
>Is there a male equivalent to lolita? Do you find it hard to go out looking like this? I imagine the contrast between your highly intricate outfits and the typical guy's slacks+button up+blazer look don't exactly... meld.

A good buddy of mine is doing his PhD in Fan Studies (as part of Cultural Studies) and sort of turned me on to the idea of looking at different fan cultures. Lolita, while not a fan culture, is certainly it's own thing. I'll have to tip him off to it.

People like seeing similarities between things and commenting on them, no matter how trivial the actual similarity is. I think it's a form of small-talk that's just slightly more involved than talking about the weather. It's not something meant to be taken seriously but when a girl is compared to a beautiful famous actress, you can't really blame her for latching on to that comparison.
Random strangers have told me I look like Audrey Hepburn, because I have full eyebrows/a short dark fringe/similarly shaped eyes that must have reminded them of her. Believe me, I do NOT look like Audrey Hepburn. I wish.
It's like when old Hungarian ladies tell me my Moitié jsk looks exactly like the national costumes they used to wear when they were young. When you look at it critically the comparison does not hold up at all, but you're not supposed to look at it critically. They're just trying to say something nice.

That's sort of my point. The perspective is Humbert's. His prose and thoughts begs for sympathy, his actions beg for contempt.

That's sort of what makes the story special. There are moments where Nobokov makes certain to add a bias to the narrative in order to color certain scenes as sweet or genuine love.

So for a moment, you start to empathize... and then you face the horrific work that he ends up doing.

Humbert isn't an unlikable person. He has merit and flaw as much as any other person and reminds us that people don't fit in these neat little boxes of "monster" or "good guy". So, as a reader, you have to encounter this conflict in reading the work and realize that he *is* a monster.

I'm going to disagree, as I believe Nabokov was fairly generous in giving us ample reason within Humbert's own narration to make us hate him and the reason the book is so finely crafted is that it so thoroughly paints his delusion and it's terrifying.

In fact, at most moments when Humbert almost tricks us into sympathizing with him (or rather tricks himself and by proxy the reader about what's going on/his intent) he describes Dolores (whether in her actions, going on and on about her appearance, or her romantic feelings) in a way that immediately seems OFF.

And he IS a rather unlikeable person, though that's purely opinion.

It's kind of difficult to find loli-able shoes in normal stores where I live, but I would say look for something in either bright red to match your pouchette or bordeaux to match the JSK underskirt--you could also, I think, get away with velvet or fur accents to complement the outfit's overall wintery feel. Even if all you have is plain oxfords like the one in your picture, lace them with a velvety ribbon instead of the leather one, or make bow shoe-clips that match your coordinate so you can slide them on top.

Would anyone mind giving some tips for applying false lashes? I'm having such a hard time. It takes me forever to get it to look right...

>> No.6570747

>>6570726
Hold that shit up to your face before you even put the glue on. Sometimes it helps to mark with light eyeshadow(that you an blend in later) before you actually apply them. Make sure to let the glue get tacky enough to stick before you put it on. The worst thing that you can do is get wet globs of glue everywhere while at the same time making your lashes not stick. You also should point your eyelid down while applying so you can see that it is as close to the lash line as possible.

>> No.6570754

>>6570747
Forgot to mention. If the sides of the lashes aren't sticking they usually need more glue. Falsies are flexible enough to basically wrap around in a circle so them not sticking to the arch of your eye is crap. Sorry if I was too harsh here, I had a ~makeup professional~ tell me that fake lashes wouldn't work for me because my eye shape would make it hard for them to stick. Another thing to be aware of is that sometimes they will need to be trimmed to fit your eyelid size, start from the outer edge rather than the inner edge(unless they have extra bits on the sides to help them stick in the package.

>> No.6570776

>>6570726
Curl your eyelashes first, wait for the glue to get tacky, hold them down all along where you are sticking them (particularly the ends). Trimming the lashes on each end helps me alot, less length to stick down and they then fit my eye shape.

A great question. =)

When I'm judging I will have you entry picture and collage side by side, to help with the process.

I will be looking at your makeup, since that is the first picture I requested for the collage. I realize that everyone has different skill levels when it comes to makeup. But, its the attention to the little details that will make or break a makeup look.

1) Does the makeup suit the style you've picked.
2) How much effort was put into the makeup.
3) How much does the makeup change your face from before and after.
4) Does your makeup compliment your outfit.

Clothing is the second thing I will be looking at. Again, I have to understand that not everyone has a plentiful closest or clothing that would outright be considered "J-fashion". But, I will be looking at a few things.

1) Does your clothing look sloppy.
2) Is the style that you've picked true to that style.

PART TWO to be posted!!

I really like 1 and 2. Your hair is gorgeous :3

>> No.6571139

The finishing touches: Hair, Nails and Accessories. I did say I'd be looking at EVERYTHING including your nails. If you chose not to wear polish, that's completely fine. But keep in mind, no nail polish or even chipped-up nails are looked on as a missed step.

Now for the hair. Again, not everyone is as skilled with hair. But, I can tell when someone has made an attempt and when someone has taken a wig and slapped it on their head and called it a day.

1) Does your hair fit the style you've chosen.
2) Have you made an attempt to style it.

Finally, accessories. This can range from rings, necklaces, bracelets, hair accessories, a bag, parasol etc. You basically get the point. I will be looking at how the pieces you've chosen tie in with your wardrobe.

Another thing I will be looking at is your shots, did you try to put in effort into how the shots look. Because, it makes no sense to get all pretty and take boring shots.

I think this way everyone can be judged fairly. I know everyone has a particular strengths, so if they put effort into the other areas, I will notice. So it can put them on par with the other ladies who are a bit of a jack-of-all trades. This isn't a contest about who is the prettiest with the most perfect body. It's about how well you've put yourself together.

I hope this answered your questions. If you have more, please feel free to ask.

man, just looking over all the entries and I really wish there was a 'runner-up' category, it's going to be so hard to narrow it down to just three winners! everyone looks really great. c:

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I was going to mass look over of all the entries, because my inbox was getting swamped with e-mails and questions.

Please ladies, I really appreciate you bringing these types of stuff to my attention. I am working rather short handed at the moment. So any help, would be a service to me.

Taking a closer look and using that photoshop image check website I also found this to be overtly photoshopped.
It looks like the lines on her elbows and gaps between fingers were drawn in for some reason? Beyond that it's inhumanly smoothed and brightened. This probably counts as minimal photoshopping though? I'm not trying to stir shit but if other contestants didn't use photoshop beyond a minor blemish and lighting I don't think major touching up should be ignored.

> Fruitful Efforts: Is she even wearing makeup at all? Coord is okay.
> Kittz: I like it. The wig is me, but she looks good overall.
> Alice: Boring and flat hair.
> Meisu: One of my favorites, adorable as hell. Best-looking collage.
> Terra: Nothing special.
> Gulpereel: I like this one too, definitely an improvement from first coord.
> Eri: Makeup makes her really droopy eyed.
> Kevlar Teacup: Seems like she broke the rules, so no opinion.
> Lecithin: Plain.
> Badr: Okay, but some different makeup would be better. Maybe something lighter?
> Rusalka: Okay this one too. I'm a big fan of dolly kei, but her outfit isn't really that interesting. Maybe more details or something.
> Hana Usagi: Another one of my favorites, she looks cute.
> Aeliami: Guessing it's some kind of gyaru, but it looks really plain anyways.
> Hester: I really like her, but I can't get over that unironed dress and bad petti. Otherwise okay.
> Aki: Worst one so far, I can't see any pastel goth about this besides the cheap wig.
> Chunlichan: It's okay, foundation seems a bit thick. Coord is okay.

My favorites are Meisu, Gulpereel and Hana Usagi.

I agree that Fruitful Efforts could have done something a little more dramatic with her makeup, but I think she was trying to go for a more natural oldschool look. That being said, I don't really care for the coord, I wish she was wearing knee socks instead of ankle-socks and a headdress or ribbon would have been nice to balance things out.
Kittz looks fine, but amongst the ouji-kodonas of GL&B she'd look out of place because of how short her shorts are. I also don't like that she completely photoshopped the background of her picture out, because I think half of dressing up for the contest should be about where and how you take your photos. Alice looks cute, but doesn't really stand out. I wish she'd tried something a little bit more elaborate like Emi's nails, but at the same time I think Emi's coord looks somewhat unbalanced and the bright red heels and different pink accessories just don't quite match. I would have gone for a more detailed dress or added a ruffled cardigan to balance out her OTT accessories. Terra's put a good beginner's coordinate together, but it lacks the small details that really makes for a 'transformation'--even just a necklace or some nail polish would have made a big difference. Lecithin, unfortunately, falls into this category as well. I don't even think she's wearing a petticoat. I think Baldr did a good job on the coordinate, but I really wish she'd gone outside for her photos! it would have made a huge difference to see a mori-girl in natural surroundings as opposed to in a house somewhere. Hana Usagi made this mistake, too, although I like her Harry Potter fanart in the background and her bedsheets are super cute. Same to Gulper Eel; seeing the camera in the photos is rather distracting, and the surroundings don't really contribute to the coordinate's sumptuous atmosphere.
Aelami imo did a really good job of conveying the 'kogal' sense of style. It's not too OTT, but her matching nails and tie are a nice touch. cont.

>> No.6575941

I really wish we could see the naked face so we could actually see the "transformation", though I understand this being cgl, it's not a good idea.

>> No.6575943

Chunlichan is one of the best lolitas in the contest, I think, her coordinate is lovely. I really like the blouse under her capelet in the far right photo when combined with her pale pink JSK and shoes. This is one where I actually wish she'd taken more photos indoors...the really worn-out picket fence and fir tree don't quite match the super-cute ensemble, again. Hester's probably her toughest competitor amongst the lolitas, dem kawaii red cheeks! the snow! the only complaint I have is that, well, I wish she had a detail shot. it looks like she's wearing a necklace and a ring, but the coordinate's a little boring otherwise, isn't it? Meisu's probably the favorite at this point. Aki and Rusalka are the only ones I can't comment on, I don't know much about pastel-goth or dolly-kei. I do think both of them could have taken better photos of their accessories, Aki exceeded the photo limit but I still haven't gotten a close-up look at her necklaces or the other bracelet/rings she's wearing. her skull/bow clips are cute, but they're nearly cropped out in the one photo where we can see them. Rusalka has painted nails and what looks like some different rings, but her photos focus on her braids+earrings and assorted broaches instead. I want a close-up of her reticule as well. I think maybe in future contests the image limit should be five pictures instead of four?
just my two cents.

Kevlar Teacup here. Editing I did for pictures included: reducing the shininess of the wig, straightening the bottom right shot, getting rid of shiny eyelash glue, tweaking saturation and contrast in some of the washed-out photos and in one instance correcting some smudged lipstick. I was having overexposure problems with the camera since it was a really sunny day when I took the photos (trying to turn it down by -2/3 on some shots) but it hasn't worked so well. I would prefer it if in >>6575836 my arm didn't look like a shining marshmallow V, but it isn't because of editing. I'm not sure about the hand blur either (overexposure/moving during the shot?) and >>6575579 I think is either a compression issue and/or lightness on the wall (pic related = close up, if someone wants to drop it into publisher, resize it, save it as a .png and then upload it to facebook and see what it looks like- be my guest, or Curiousbear can zoom into the collage I sent her and take a look).

I offered during submission to provide hi-res originals to Curiousbear if they wanted to check for editing- it's her call and I would not like to be disqualified ><- and would also provide some to the thread if requested. Concrit on the co-ord is welcome too- I wasn't really sure how to incorporate gold into the outfit to match the jsk.

Originally, that is what I had hoped for. But, a lot of girls had an issue with that, because it was /cgl/ and didn't want drama threads stirred up. But, I completely understand.

I will say this, a few of them have been a night and day. I will be doing some honorable mentions, maybe 2-3 of the girls that I had a hard time choosing between.

>>6575943
Thank you for all of those awesome critiques. You know what, that is my own error. While trying to re-fix the rules, like several hundred times. It seems like I ended up with less photos than intended. Originally I had up 5, not 4. So, that is an error on my part.

It's been a little rough, with the time difference and not getting the recommended amount of sleep, coupled with running a household and being sick. I honestly didn't realize that, until you mentioned that.

So, I apologize to the ladies that got affected by that. It was an error on my part. Of course, this is all a learning process and the next time around, things will be more ironed out. Hopefully, I can get more help with the judging and organizing.=)

To be honest, if you've been paying attention to the threads. It's actually been pretty friendly and an all around good atmosphere compared to the usual thread on /cgl/, let alone a contest thread.

The nicer collages will get more attention, which is natural. Which means, it will be more likely to catch little things like "shoop". No on is attacking her or calling names, they just had some questions. That was all. =)

her hair's fairly thin annon, you just grab a section from the top of your head to a little behind the ear and tie it up as close to the part as possible, her hair lays flatter since it's a small elastic and again, thin hair.

Why do you assume that once someone gets older they can no longer be pretty? That they become wilted?

When I was first dating my husband years ago, he gave me some roses. I dried them out and they never wilted. They still look great and I still cherish them. I still want them and think they are beautiful.
