I've had luck by taking a sharp rock and rubbing the fabric against it back and forth until it started to fray/create tearing. Looked pretty spiffy to me! The fabric you used probably melted since it wasn't natural fiber material.

honestly I would have just kept it clean and hemmed it if I were you, your construction looks really crisp and neat! The fabric you used for the cloak looks like some synthetic blend broad cloth which is too thin to really distress well and isn't suited for that kind of thing. With thicker fabrics I'd use a coarse sand paper to get a worn look.

I've done some minor distressing on the fabric already and it was working alright, I just wasn't sure what method was best. If I ever remake the cloak, I might try going the clean cut route, but I really prefer the ragged looking cloaks for signless cosplays. It's just a personal preference.

I really like the rough look of the burlap! Go with what previous anon said about makeup, because your face isn't expressing any sort of character right now.
I like that you frayed the edges of the burlap, but also add colour weathering - take some brown and green paint and brush/smear it over the edges and on random wear spots to bring out the cloak's texture.
Also, thicker red lines on your torso.
Aside from all that, I generally like your Signless and your expressions/posing. Just go darker on the eyes and contouring.

I don't really think it's that big of a deal. It's an anime convention and for years people have bitched about anime-related media at comic conventions. Because of the popularity of western series like Homestuck, MLP, Adventure Time ect it's turned the other way around. If it's what the people running the con think, so be it. It's kind of hilarious because at any anime con I've gone to Homestuck takes up about 20~40% of the population, at least. Banning Homestuck would be a huge loss to revenue and in turn a stupid move, but hey, if the person in charge wants to be a piece a shit that's his problem. Terrible people are going to be in any costume - I'd almost argue a terrible anime fan is worse than a terrible Homestuck fan, sans potential gray smearage.

The quality of these costumes look great, but the camera angle is kind of annoying. It's difficult to focus on any of the cosplayers besides the Karkat because of how it warps them all... maybe that was the point, I don't know.

I'm wondering what you guys think about using fabric paint as a substitute for actual body paint. Is this safe or recommended if you are in a rush and can't get body paint before a con or if youre trying to cut expenses or something like that?

I got fabric paint all over my arms one spirit day at school, the day ended with me having bald spots on my arm from picking at the paint and having body hair go with it.

ive used it several times for taking pictures at home, i like it! it's definitely nontoxic and very cheap, looks just as good as pax, but i honestly wouldnt recommend it for a con--it gloops and peels in gigantic sheets the second water and the slightest friction hit it, which makes it excellent for photoshoots and meetups that allow paint, so you dont smudge everywhere but also dont have to take hours to scrub it off later. i just mix together black and white matte tulip-brand fabric paint (about $5 for a decent-sized bottle at michaels/joanns), brush it on and blowdry and powder same as pax. the gray it makes has a more greenish tinge than the acrylic i use for pax, but it's not very noticeable, and i've only used it for greenish trolls anyway.

Not only that, but it sticks to each other at joints, like inside the elbows, and peels off at an alarming rate on the hands. im gonna go ahead and disagree with you anon. i swear by the fabric paint method and i've never had it come off on me or any other cosplayer. the only place i've ever had any problem with peeling is on my hands, like you said. the only problem i have with it is that anywhere that fabric comes in contact with it like at the cuffs of your sleeves feels strange and has a weird sensation. any stickiness is easily fixed by powdering your arms with neutral set or baby powder.

Me and my friend (the Terezi in that picture) have both used Tulip matte fabric paint for at least the half year now on our arms because we don't want to sew/buy armsocks. It doesn't peel on most people (for some reason I always get a small patch on me that peels by the end of the con) and neither of us have gotten sick from that. i dont know about fabric paint, since ive never worn it for more than a few hours, but you can sweat through pax! ive done full-torso pax three different times, including on my armpits, in socal summer weather and never felt overheated. if it's hot out you'll have to repowder it, since the moisture coming through makes it sticky, but ive seen sweat beads literally bubble up through it. my boyfriend and i have been using pax for our bodies since we started cosplaying trolls and after seven cons (and at least two days of trolls per weekend) we've never gotten sick or anything!

basically, don't preach about it being unhealthy unless you or someone you know has actually gotten sick from it. fabric paint does feel a little weird on your skin and you may be sensitive after washing it off, but pax has been nothing but good to me (minus the effort in taking it off).

Protip to those who're curious and may try it out, when you're in the shower, wet a hand towel, put soap on it and gently rub it over your skin and let it set for a good minute or two. Comes off very easily, if you don't you'll be in the same predicament as I was the first time I used it and had to have my friend rub it off me in the tub.

different anon but i personally dont use fabric paint on my face because the friction of trying to contour with ben nye peels it right off, and it's more liable to crack than pax; ive stopped using pax on my face because it tends to flake away at the corners of your mouth and can get gremliny by the end of the day, but it's not bad as long as you dont get it too close to your eyes or in your mouth. ben nye sticks to it fantastically (you wont have to worry about accidentally thinning out your gray by trying to add more), and it moves pretty well if you add extra prosaide (body should be 1:1, give or take depending on your paint brand and skin type, face more like 2:1), but unless you're REALLY bothered by the greasy feeling of ben nye (ive never tried snazzaroo but like the look of it on friends who use it) i wouldnt recommend it.

for the love of god, shave your arms. you dont want to rip the hair out, and long hairs trapped under the paint will make you look old and scaly. put lotion on before applying it, even if you have oily skin--greasiness is actually a huge advantage with pax, i don't have nearly as hard a time with it as my dry-as-a-desert boyfriend--and give yourself a lot of time to just sit in a hot bath or shower. really good pax will stay flawless through the con, and even intense scrubbing won't do much until it's had time to loosen up some. i haven't tried the remover, but a couple threads ago someone said to just spread it over the area, let it sit, then use makeup wipes or shower normally. it's always going to take a lot of effort, but hey, if you enjoy picking/peeling at things, it gives you something to do.

hi guys, the original terezi anon here. i didnt want this to be some big fight about body paint, i was sharing my experience and mentioned the thread to my cosplay partner who also used the method and she clearly got a bit frustrated so id like to apologize on both of our behalves. i realize it may not be the healthiest option but i haven't had any complications and i've found it to be the most effective method in my experience. everyone is obviously free to cosplay however they see fit and it'd be foolish to impose a single option onto an entire mass of people.
so it'd be great if we could move on and actually post some homestuck cosplay.

I'm sorry for posting so much guys, please forgive me, but just a quick question on my Gamzee? I already fixed the nails (made them sharper and fixed the color), the colors of the shirt and the spots on the pants, and repainting the clubs. But the WIG. Does anyone know where to find a good, full-volumed curly wig? Or one that's full enough that I could re-attempt curling? A lot of wigs I have are too thin (so much so that I can't even style it over the headband for my horns), and they either end up looking burnt out and messy or too flat. I don't have a reliable wig store to browse through.

I used a Magnum from Arda Wigs for Kurloz and I think it would work pretty well for Gamzee. It's rather curly on the sides already so the styling would be relatively minimal.

I can tell you're using the TopatoCo shirt because it's a horrible color and I own it (unfortunately). Anyway, I would suggest getting a different wig entirely. The yellow is really off-putting, though it MIGHT be possible to pull it off if you tame down the random flippy bits and style the bangs closer to canon. The make up is a lot better though, and I really like your contacts. If you made your own shirt and fixed or replaced the wig I'd say it'd improve it a lot.
