That Meenah was actually crying not because of Calvin/any Jake, but because during the Meenah/Karkat shot a Karkat was getting a little too close to comfort and being creepy to her. So I've sat down, given it a lot of thought, and I've decided I actually want to do Trickster Jane. But I'm going to take my time with this shit and not half-ass it. I've got fabric in mind, I'm going to check out different methods to dye/paint the stripes onto the fabric so it doesn't look like ass, and so on.

This may be a silly question to ask but of all the things I've been debating with this cosplay it's the cupcake on her head.

What does /cgl/ think/prefer? A completely 3 dimensional actual goddamn cupcake on her head, a nicely made flat piece like a giant hairclip, or what I was thinking as a middle ground where it's a 3 dimensional cupcake cut in half s it still stands out, but isn't this big ugly thing jutting out someone's head?

I know you guys get pissed about tricksters (I do too actually), but for some reason I fell in love with that dress and if I do this I want to do a great job instead of a half assed one.

I actually don't mind tricksters that much. The designs are cute and colorful, something that Homestuck rarely gets, so I see it as a good change of pace design-wise.

So many people half-ass trickster designs and I think that's why we hate them so much. If people put time and effort into making good looking trickster cosplays, I'd never get tired of them.

As for the cupcake, it looks like it's smushed into her hair, but that doesn't mean it needs to be 3 dimensional. It would probably work to make a half-3D cupcake and clip it on, but make sure to make it look like its sitting in her hair rather than on top it. Like how Troll horns are, but for a cupcake.

Maybe! That was an option I was debating as well. The only reason I was leaning more towards painting them on is because I can sort of feel like there's a bit of that yellow in that orange, and the effect may be easily reached using paint? But I wanted to test it and see if it was true though.

My idea was to get some dye-na-flow in the orange, mix it with a bit of white and thin it a bit, then take a sponge, dip it in, and then just stroke down the fabric and try not to overlap. They sell this stuff so the thing won't bleed over.
But yeah I was going to experiment with it, but if you're telling me it'll be easier to color-block the skirt and cut out the pieces I may just go that route then. It'd be an interesting challenge.

As for the cupcake, maybe try and sculpt it around the flat side to it looks like it was actually smushed? Like, paper wrapper bulging out, cake cracked, frosting a little smeary? Kind of like how Roxy's cotton candy looks kind of tangled and melted into her hair in the artwork.

haha, I'm only saying it because painting stripes sucks ass. That idea does sound really neat though; so definitely try it out! If it turns out to be tricky to keep in neat stripes; you can always just do the sponge painting to a big section of fabric and then just color block that in, too!

On the topic of stripes, is it easier to buy custom stripe fabric from a place such as spoonflower, paint the stripes, or piece fabrics together? it depends on the size of the stripes, the fabric you're working with, and the look you're going for. If you're doing a tank top I'm assuming you're looking for a knit, which Spoonflower does have (but it's kind of pricey.) Paint can be done neatly, but it's definitely a lot of work. Piecing it together would be a lot of sewing, especially if the stripes are small, but it might be the easiest and neatest aside from getting the fabric printed.

i love fef's wig, but her tiny horns on a visible headband and puckered skirt stitching are irritating as hell, and eridan's utter lack of contouring and way-too-blue cape kind of ruins the picture. it's not even like when people mix up gamzee and eridan's colors, that's basically equius there??? the cape should match the hair streak (not that most people get the right shade of purple for their wigs either).

So I have a question to ask, I think this is the best place? I want to cosplay Jade next weekend, and I went to put on my dreamer!Jade costume I had made this summer, and I lost too much weight and can't fit it any more. It pretty much just falls off of me. Is it a bad idea for me to wear a psuedo-Jade outfit (long green skirt and her white shirt) instead of wearing a costume that doesn't fit? Or is that just not acceptable?

Shameless selfpost, I know.
I fully intend to fix a lot of the inaccurate things in this, and I really didn't look at good as I could have because it was more a picture that happened a little by accident while we were testing the lighting in the area. Not to mention the creep who messed up the bangs on my wig. He's another story altogether.
I'm not wearing Karkat to another con until I remake (they broke in the morning getting ready and again on the way, reattaching them was a quick emergency job) and mount the horns to hid the headband, style the wig better, get more accurate pants, buy veneers, and replace the shoes I had for plain black sneakers.
Pardon the bit of messed up makeup, it was around 7 at night at the convention and it had been a very busy day. I hadn't actually thought I would be *in* photos, just taking them for the shoot, so I didn't touch up anything too much. My makeup looked better during the day, I swear.
Probably the best thing about it is the angle, that was sort of a happy accident while we were testing the lighting and camera modes.
(Please don't point out my thighs I know they look bad I'm sorry. Also the fucked up fingers on my left hand, I have no idea what the hell happened with those.)

I did a Trickster Jane cosplay shortly after DF originally released the design, and made my cupcake 3D and got a lot of compliments on it. Most people even thought it was a real cupcake. I'd say to use my method, it was pretty damn easy and turned out well.

That's the tutorial I used. After it was finished I sewed a piece of fabric on the wig where I wanted the cupcake and superglued the cupcake onto the fabric. It gave me no trouble at all.

I think it's easy to look 'too old' to cosplay the kids, but at the same time I don't feel people should be more or less banned from it.

CGL is a place of hard critique and I'd never want that to change really, but if someone looks too old to cosplay a character, you can't make them stop. Same way you can't tell a babyface not to cosplay an older character.

Age is age, and getting older isn't an end to cosplay, we can all see that as we've grown older.

Granted some people have it easier (I'm hedging in on 22 and still have people asking if my parents are home when I answer the door), but no one can stop themselves from aging.

Assuming you're the one in the photo and the OP's photo, age-wise you look fine. I would suggest styling your wig though. The bangs are too long and it overall looks sloppy. If you're unsure of how to style, try asking an experienced friend.

A friend tonight actually mentioned that my picture was used for this post. So to be honest, I found it funny that the ACTUAL OP used my picture instead of other John cosplayers ( who are still of the same age as me i might add) who have better facial structure to do him better.

I think one of the big things is that a lot of people who cosplay them are prone to making them really terribly and half-assed so they can run around cons screaming and giggling and being obnoxious. Kind of how people were worried Caliborn cosplayers would insult and harass Janes after that one update, or Johns throwing buckets at Karkats, etc. People have a tendency to take canon (or barely canon things) and extrapolate to accommodate their own idiocy.

Stop. I'm sure they have a fancy camera but learn how to use it. Learn how to fucking edit. The skin is grossly smooth, there's no sign of any kind of lines that make someone human. Every facial feature is hazy and blurry with no depth. Why is the skin so gray? Light reflects on skin. Don't just desaturate every spot of skin 100%.

I'll have to agree, Marni is great in that she volunteers so much of her time to doing shoots for other people, particularly people in the Homestuck fandom... I just wish she wouldn't edit so heavily.

Some of my favorite shots by her have been the ones where she just let the initial composition take center stage and used a lighter hand with the retouching. She's made leaps and bounds in her photography and is still improving, but I think she needs to get out of this editing rut.

Ok, I know this question must have been asked a million and a half times, but for the love of all that is good can someone PLEASE help me with makeup? No matter how hard I try, my makeup always smudges off. I set with Ben Nye final seal AND powderset and it still fades. Everywhere I look online just says "SEAL IT AND YOU'LL BE FINE". Am I just doing it wrong? Anyone have any luck with other brands? Also, burlap- decent choice or godawful choice?

hey HSG it's my first time styling a wig and I'm trying to get those little face framing flips meulin has so I pinned them around curlers, sprayed the shit out of them and left them overnight... and it barely did anything. I couldn't find g2b glued hair spray at my local cvs so I just used the extra hold aquanet I had lying around. Is g2b glued the only thing that works well with wigs?

When I was styling my Gamzee wig, g2b glued was the only thing that would hold the curls. I also tried to curl with curlers and spray but that did NOT work. The only thing I found that worked was putting my wig on the day of and manually holding up curls one by one and spraying the shit out of them. Just my 2 cents. G2b glued is magic.

Well personally, the itchiness wasn't that bad because I lined the body part with muslin to reduce the scratchiness on my skin and makeup. And I'm talking about on my face, haha! The body makeup will have to be reapplied often, I've unfortunately come to accept that, but my face smudges too!

how do you seal it? if it smudges off, you either a) don't seal properly- which is to basically make yourself white with the powderset and only use a thin layer of the final seal. too many people rely on final seal.
or
b) you didn't prep yourself properly and your skin is too oily. if this is the case, you need to wash your face thoroughly with face wash and warm water, use makeup primer, and if necessary, makeup blotters to remove any lingering skin oils.

maybe a little clean for a rebel outcast who's been running from condy most of his life though- especially since you went with the burlap which is super textured and evocative of that. A little texture on the wig would be great and some black eyeliner to give you some more definition as well as darker bags under your eyes would do wonders. I'd darken your eyebrows and do some contouring too to make yourself look older and more masculine. Those are kind of finishing touch things though and from what i can see from the headshot, your costume looks good.
