prep for some shit to go down in the bayarea hs group- two meetups (skirtstuck in sf and one in downtown sj that encourages grey) are being held on the same day, and undoubtedly, there will be outcries against one city trying to steal the other's "members".

What are some good ideas for Homestuck groups besides the usual?

I know i'd be interested in seeing a group of Troll Godtiers or a group of Alpha/Beta God tiers (Or both at once, who knows!).

I know it fits the Trolls/Ancestors thing but Id love to see an Alpha Trolls/Beforus Ancestors group. All the Ancestors design their own designs, I think it could be really creative! Either that or Alpha Trolls/Beta Ancestors, like meeting versions of themselves.

I was thinking that too, and I agree with you in that it'd be cool to see how people would envision what the Beforus Ancestors would look like, but eh, I don't think anybody is willing to take a leap that requires designing 12 outfits with unique designs.

Tricksters are another group that I'd really like to see now that they are literally canon, but again, the design hump coupled with the idea that everyone may eventual get a canon design and etc.

Another cool group would be a sprite group.

Hey HSG, I'm making my Aradia horns for Promstuck and I want to do that thing where you have a headband with screws on, the screws poke through the wig, and then you screw the horns on... but I have no idea how to do it. Can't really poke Aradia clusterfuck horns through the wig, so it has to be the screw thing, but I'm not sure what I have to do to the horns to be able to screw them onto the headband. Any tips?

I believe what you do is the make the horns out of something solid enough to be able to be drilled into, then drill said hole into the base of the horns. I've also seen "snap-on" horns if you have to use material that isn't drillable.

Back to the Pax conversation in the last thread (sorry for digging it back up) but I'm having a serious problem with my Pax. I use no-tack, and while it worked GREAT at first and stayed on my skin for days with no issue before I removed it, the second and third time I have worn it it has peeled off like crazy, as if I'm only painting my skin with acrylic. The only thing I think I was doing incorrectly was using that really cheapo Basic acrylic paint, so I switched to a slightly more expensive paint brand. But is there anything else I am doing wrong? I'm pretty sure I was doing a 1:1 ratio, but... I just have no idea.

I'm not the PAX anon from the last thread, but the paint I use to mix is Liquitex. I haven't used anything else, but the tutorial I looked at suggested it, and with acrylic paint already being expensive, I didn't want to experiment.

If you want to keep it from peeling immediately, mix twice as much pros-aide, in a 2:1 ratio and see if that helps.
It may also be that its reacting to the oils in your skin, so take a shower first before you do any applications. I like to make sure my stuff comes off, so I'll shower, then put lotion on so I'm not having to work so hard to get it off when I need it to.

Assuming that it's a 1:1 ratio and not more acrylic than PAX.....
I think sometimes thicker PAX peels easier? Thicker PAX/more layers could mean the paint you're using could have too much filler junk and not enough pigment to cover completely opaque in one layer.
Alternatively, do you use lotion/moisturize a lot or have really oily skin in certain kinds of weather? The PAX might have more trouble sticking to that...

I haven't used the method myself, but from what i've seen it's metal snaps, with one on the base of the horn and the other in the wig. The only problem I see is that they'd be more likely to fall off if bumped.

With how Aradia's horns are on the side of her head, your best bet might actually be to use rather strong plastic combs. I've had a couple horns with combs and placed them at the sides of my head and they didn't move at all [if you have a nice thick wig, too, for Aradia.] I have a few samples if you'd like to see them, too.

I'm still also learning how to do the screw method so it would be easier for clients to get their horns without the headbands. So any tips and tricks would be great!

If the snaps are put in correctly, they shouldn't fall off. I'm assuming we're talking about sew in snaps you can get at fabric stores.
If you're worried they'll fall off, Joanns does sell giant snaps in black.
It also helps if the base you make the horns from are made of something very light to begin with, like floral foam.

Another horn question- is it possible to have sturdy horns attached to hairclips or something like that? My boyfriend is cosplaying Equius and not using a wig (yes I know, always use a wig etc etc, but he has hair exactly like Equius with the widow's peak and everything so I reckon it'll look alright) so I was wondering how to attach his horns.

You could probably try the comb technique for that or drilling holes through the model magic and use an elastic band to help keep them up perhaps. I'm not too sure. I've had good experiences with the combs and putting bobby pins against the teeth to hold them in place.

Pictures are the combs I've used. I got them from Hobby Lobby and cut down the middle and snapped it in half. After, I carved a notch to fit the curve of the comb in to the model magic then just glued it in place. If it won't hold too well with super glue, get a thin piece of tissue paper to put between the plastic and model magic to act as a conductor of the adhesive.

Honestly, I wouldn't say that trolls/Ancestors groups are "usual", I think there has only been the one from Otakon, and even separately I can count the number of full beta troll groups, full alpha troll groups, or full ancestors groups that I've seen on one hand. I personally wouldn't mind seeing more /good/ groups for trolls.

More troll godtiers would be awesome though, and sprites too. And I've only really seen one big trickster group; the one from Otakon, so I'd love to see more tricksters as well...

Sleeplock (or Jay) Actually is trans as far as I'm aware, but is normally convinced by Ike (squeakchic) to do crossplays/dress like a girl. As far as I have heard, most people swear on Ben Nye's final seal and neutral set but I'm not entirely sure if it works only on Ben Nye products, so I can't tell you if it does for Pax or for Snazaroo? There are other ways to seal I've heard in a pinch, but I'd go for a professional makeup set powder and final seal.

Ben Nye powder seal/Ben Nye Final seal is your best bet. The spray is an absolute MUST but if yu wanted to save some money on product you could always use baby powder. Apply the powder first to dry the makeup and then spray it sealed.

You're going to need rubbing alcohol, the ink packs from permanent markers and a spray bottle. Put the ink packs in the bottle with the rubbing alcohol and shake it, and that'll be how you dye your wig. It's not too hard.

Maybe look for a black and white pair and dye them? Although I've only seen black and white in womens' as well, so I can't promise anything. If you're a crossplayer, you could also opt for womens' jeans but get compression shorts/pants from underworks, that should help smooth out your curves maybe? (Or if you're a guy; it shouldn't matter that much in the first place, a lot of guys used to wear womens' skinny jeans when that was in style.)

Like don't just opt for RIT; it probably will turn out way too light because jeans are going to have some sort of synthetic material in them. You need to get a darker orange to put on the bottom. There's barely any gradient to those horns, and they'd probably look completely orange from a distance of more than a couple feet.

Everything else about them is alright. They're nothing spectacular but Piexes horns really can't be breathtakingly constructed. So you've done good, I guess.

So I've got a few questions for you guys.
Compared to the other Homestucks I've come across, I'm pretty old for the fandom (23 right now). I've recently been thinking about cosplaying from it to my local con, but I have a few concerns.
I'm pretty sure my options are limited to the ancestors and guardians since the kids are supposed to be 16 at most; but I fear I might be too old even for that just because of the average age of the fandom. I'm toying with the idea of doing the Condesce, but I don't want to feel old or like I'm babysitting a bunch of kids. Basically, my questions are these: Should I just give up on this idea to avoid hanging out with a bunch of teenagers? And, would an older fan in, say, a Jane cosplay just be way too odd?

When I did some styling with a thin wig I think the most important thing is really picking and choosing which hairs to take up and shape? As well, I think if you shape the spikes a certain way in the back (assuming you did the back this way) it could puff out a little and hide more area?

Generally it won't stay on the hands entirely, even if you powder and seal it. Properly sealing them to high heaven will mean you get MUCH LESS ruboff, but you won't eliminate it entirely with Ben Nye.

Remember to thoroughly prime your hands, use a fuckton of powder, and apply your final seal in thin layers.

Actually, speaking of hairstyles, I'd really like to get a Jade wig in the next few months. I don't subscribe to the pin-straight or curly-haired looks, and lke the full-bodied, wavy wigs better.

I'd love to get a wig that's full and fluffy on top, but I realize the waves and length would probably weight it down too much. Does anyone have any suggestions? My price range is about $25, and I'd prefer to stay away from Arda/Epic Cosplay/Match Wigs.

I know one of the maintainers who runs the blog and checks here, so if you're reading this post right now I want to say that I do truly enjoy your blog, and I'm sorry for all the dumb shit people submit.

I think I even recall you ordering from that ebay store and having a good experience, which is completely cool. However, the Dave-type wig people always order there (the short blonde one with the photos of an Asian guy with glasses wearing them), isn't the same wig as pictured.

It's thin in the back (trust me, if you have it put it on and take a photo of the back of your head), and sometimes comes with gross amounts of glue on it.

While you can trim it to make it more similar to the photo, you shouldn't have to. And by that I mean when you order a wig, you should get what is pictured and settle for nothing less.

If you buy a shirt online and it's several inches longer and a different style than the photo, you shouldn't be responsible for having to take it in and alter it to make it look like the photo.

You should get what you paid for. I'm not trying to tell you how to run your blog, simply saying that there are bad experiences out there and that agree518 basically wastes time until dispute/feedback periods run out.

The fins are usually covered by hair or there is a degree of photoshop that goes into the seam between the fin and my face. Though, there is a method I've tried before which has given me decent results.
You attach the fin and then use scar wax to fil in the gap/seam and cover the whole thing with latex. That usually works if you're using blockier fins or if you have a thick latex edge. (Also, tissue paper covered in latex)

Good sir or madam, if your ass is secreting a black substance, I should hope that you are not smearing it across your mouth, and would advise that you seek medical attention immediately.

if you have the time/skill, making your own seadweller fins is actually quite easy.

the way to do it is make the fin out of clay first, like good clay they use to cast things (because thats what you'll be doing!) once you have the fins sculpted and all to scale, make a plaster mold.
the easiest way i've found is to do it one side at a time.
pour the plaster into a shallow pre shaped form, and press the clay fin into it and wait for it to harden.
once it has, pour more plaster in to fill the rest of the mold. once fully hardened , carefully crack open the mold and clean out ALL clay. Now is NOT the time to be lazy!
once the mold is cleaned, clamp that fucker shut and pour in latex, tapping it to work out all air bubbles. once its all set, pull your bitchin fin out carefully.
this next part is super important if you want a smooth join when wearing it.

You need to feather the edges.
if you were smart, you left a little flap that would sit on your skin to help attach it better.
what you need to do is sit that flap on a flat clean work surface, and brush thin layers of latex over that edge, working till you have a super thin edge.
once thats dry, you can paint with pretty much any latex paint.
attach with spirit gum and go have fun.

I can confirm that a Meenah cosplayer started crying because a Jake cosplayer started screaming at them to be "in character", or whatever load of rubbish they were trying to pull off. The Meenah was my friend, and she started crying because she got caught off guard and got freaked out by someone screaming at her. I should have been there, I would have never let this happen, I would have had their head the second they started screaming.

Fine, I'll bite. Criticism? That fem!Dirk wig makes no functional sense, and looks like it's based off a children's drawing. I always saw Dirk's genderbent having somewhat 'scene' hair. Layer, layer, layer. Flip out the ends, have some side bang, make it look NATURAL and not like you stuck your head in glue.

Ditch the tight sweatpants. This is someone who meticulously takes care of himself and his appearance despite no one ever seeing him in person. Get some actual pants.

The symbol is off center, and when you seriously cosplay her, ditch the bracelets. Part of me wants to say ditch the lipstick, but another part agrees it's fine since the Strider's would take the Lalonde's lipstick... Maybe not black lipstick. It's really distracting and few people can pull it off well and you aren't one of them.

the biggest problem for me was that it looks like there was no plan or coherent idea behind the wig styling. Do you want it to be choppy and spiky or do you want long and flowing. It's can't be both. You need to have a plan before you start, a reference and a clear idea. Start by sketching. Do not touch the wig before you're sure you know what your doing.
Make sure each part of the wig ends up with similar texture, right now it looks like the top part is rock hard with gel and got2b and the lower parts are soft and flowy.

She has an unstyled wig, sloppy hems on the tights (which are also the wrong colour- her tights are supposed to be darker than her robe), and strange glittery shoes without the straps that Rose's shoes are supposed to have. She has a nice photographer and the fabric choice is nice, but that doesn't excuse the fact that she has some serious issues with this.

I was going to mention cowbuttcrunchies as good, not-crazy-or-embarassing Bostonstucks to meet, though you won't find them at meetups but their tumblr is really great to tutorials and FAQs. There's also vantasss, who seems to have ditched bostonstuck meetups and now hangs out with the cowbutt girls. Can't really blame them for not wanting to be around bostonstuck.

I also like Lindzar, Sodii, and Alyssaties. They're Bostonstucks but their costumes tend to be above average. they also don't go to many meetups.

Not one of the anons that criticized it before, but I'm actually really loving the style and direction of that wig. It feels a lot more natural, and I could see a more fem!Dirk having a style like that.

My biggest criticism is that it feels a little heavy towards your left? Like, if there was a way to just gently shift your wig's swoop over some to your right, it'd balance it out better as opposed to making it look like your head's going to tip over. Plus there's that little spot on your right that I don't know whats going on but it seems a little messy/some strands are standing up kinda weird I'd recommend fixing that up.

Otherwise that looks loads better, I really like this idea. Also just gotta add, thanks for being a sport about the criticisms!

Totally what I said when I got crit too. Hey like, if there's obvious vendetta going on and shit that's not cool. But for the most part everyone can take some crit from time to time, especially if you're like me and are newer to cosplaying.

And yeah thats what I meant by shifting it and fluffing it.

Also, just gotta say while there's things I'd change about the execution (paint their face area more, there's a spot thats unpainted on the head that's killing me, find a way to shift their head up and keep it up so it doesn't look like it's shouting at the sun all the time) I thought this was a pretty cool idea for Caliborn, especially given the whole connection to Lil Cal/puppets.

I think they lifted the head like that for the interview so they could see the guy better and such. Looking at the eyes it looks like it's meant to be down lower because it seems like they're meant to look through the actual eyes of the head.

the skirt and headband are just as blank white as the shirt, who besides you has ever tried to insist that the headband has to be white? a white headband would look stupid with blonde hair and doesnt match rose's aesthetic at all

sprite skirt is white yes but so are jane and roxy's skirts and no one objects to them wearing blue or pink, the skirt matches the (admittedly sloppily painted) symbol and that's what matters

predominantly-white kid outfits can be striking but they dont work on everyone, i honestly wish more people would take advantage of white=whatever you want when doing simple cosplays
